JOHN MURRAY OAM (CHAIRMAN) A TIME FOR CHANGE, NEW INITIATIVES AND CELEBRATING GROWTH. CAROLYN CAMPBELL JOINS THE BOARD It gives me great pleasure to welcome Carolyn Campbell to the Bankstown Sports Board of Directors. When we first heard about Carolyn, we were all very impressed by her sporting and corporate credentials, and her experience within the sports industry, and we immediately set about inviting her to be more involved with our clubs. Carolyn already has an understanding of how our clubs operate as she has been a member of the Baulkham Hills Hockey Club for a number of years and volunteers on the committee. This grassroots knowledge, combined with her level of expertise as CEO of Netball NSW and Chairperson of Sport NSW is something you don’t often find, and is invaluable to an organisation as large as ours. In the short amount of time that she has been with us, Carolyn is already providing a fresh, new perspective on all aspects of our operations, which will significantly benefit all of our members, guests, staff and sporting club family. VALE BRIAN BOWYER We are all very saddened to hear of the passing of former Baulkham Hills Sports Director Brian Bowyer. Brian was one of the 12 ‘Original Subscribers’ of Baulkham Hills Sports Club when it was formed in 1969, before he took up a role as the Sports Secretary at Bankstown Sports in 1970. He left five years later to take up a role as the Secretary-Manager of Baulkham Hills Sports, a position he held for many years. Following his retirement, Brian continued to support the local sporting clubs in the Baulkham Hills region, and holds a life membership at the Baulkham Hills Cricket Club. He was also one of the main contributors to the recently published Baulkham Hills Cricket Centenary Book, celebrating the club’s 100th anniversary. Our condolences go out to the Bowyer family. WELCOME UNITY BANK I would like to officially welcome Bankstown City Unity Bank to Flinders Centre Bankstown, and I must say, what a fantastic store they’ve opened. The company offers a range of loans and other financial services, but the new outlet in Flinders Centre is a state-of-the-art interactive hub featuring the latest

technology for people to browse and try. I went along to their official opening and was blown away by all of the new technology and gadgets they have on display!

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT JOHN MURRAY OAM (CHAIRMAN)

Chairman’s Report I was also very impressed with Unity Bank’s involvement in the local community. They sponsor a number of local sporting teams including the Bankstown District Cricket Club, Bankstown District Amateur Football Association, Bankstown United Football Club, Bankstown Basketball Association, and the Bankstown Giants Rugby League Football Club. The organisation also supports a number of charities including Youth Off The Streets – Bankstown Outreach Program, The Cure Starts Now Incorporation, and Asbestos Diseases Foundation of Australia. Unity Bank is located on the Ground Floor of Flinders Centre and is directly accessible from the Restwell St foyer. NURSES AND MIDWIVES On Friday 10 May, some of our Directors joined staff at Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital to celebrate International Nurses and Midwives Day. This is such a great day where we all get to pause and reflect on how much these dedicated men and women contribute to our community every single day. Bankstown Sports has again contributed $40,000 in funding for another round of education and training scholarship for the nurses and midwives at this facility, which will help them to further their skills in specialised areas, and ultimately, improve patient care. This is the 13th year the club has support Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital through this program, and we are delighted to be able to do so. THANK YOU – ANZAC DAY Thank you to everyone who came along to our Anzac Day events at Bankstown Sports Bowls, The Acres Club and Birrong Sports Club. We saw a fantastic turnout at each venue and collectively we were able to raise $4,952.60 for Legacy, which includes donations and contributions from the proceeds of our commemorative in-house Basement Brewhouse beer - True Brew. This money will go towards helping Australian families who are doing it tough following the injury or death of a spouse or parent, during or after their defence force service. FEATURE STORY INTRODUCING CAROLYN CAMPBELL

Meet Carolyn Campbell THE CLUB’S NEWEST DIRECTOR HAS HIT THE GROUND RUNNING, PROMISING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN OUR LOCAL COMMUNITY.

6

BANKSTOWN SPORTS INTOUCH JUN, JUL & AUG 2019

It was here that Carolyn began to understand how Bankstown Sports and its associated venues operated, and how much support and commitment the clubs provided to their local communities. “Coming from WA, there is not the same club structure as here in NSW, and I couldn’t believe that such a wonderful setup existed. Over the years, I learned more about Bankstown Sports, I met the Directors on occasion, and I started to understand the full extent of the loyalty and level of support that the organisation offers to the many sporting clubs lucky enough to be within the system”. Carolyn’s love of sport extends well beyond hockey and she has quite an impressive resume of corporate and administrative roles in the sporting field. She is the current Secretary for the Norwest Strikers Hockey Club, she is the CEO of Netball NSW and earlier this year, she was appointed the Chairperson of Sport NSW.

On Tuesday 9 April, Carolyn Campbell officially began her new role as a Director, joining the Board for their monthly meeting at Bankstown Sports, and says she is hoping to really make a difference in the local community. “I have had first-hand experience as one of the many volunteers that make sport tick in this country, and over the years, the level of support and development that the club has offered has provided a tier of support that clubs outside this system could only wish for. I know the impact that this club has on many communities is very important to the Directors, management and the members, and I take great pride in being given the opportunity to play a role in this”.

Carolyn’s knowledge of the sporting sector, her experience as a company director and her passion for netball and hockey, will bring so much to our team and I’m confident that she will continue to take our club from strength to strength.

Bankstown Sports President John Murray says it was this experience and wealth of knowledge that made her a perfect candidate for a Directorship with the club. “It was very important that we looked outside of our industry to bring someone in as a Director, to ensure diversity and perspective. When we first approached her, Carolyn was very excited about the opportunity to join our Board and was confident that she could contribute a great deal in the area of sport and as a company director, but she was a little concerned about her lack of knowledge and experience in hospitality and club operations. This was music to our ears! While she will help us with the sport and governance side of things, we will assist her to better understand how our clubs operate”.

Bankstown Sports CEO Mark Condi says Carolyn is a welcome addition to the club.

FEATURE STORY INTRODUCING CAROLYN CAMPBELL

Carolyn Campbell

has always had an interest in sport, whether it be from her days as a PE teacher, or her time out on the sporting field with her team mates, or behind the scenes as a committee member. While she’s played a variety of sports in her lifetime, hockey has been her one true love, and saw her join the Baulkham Hills Women’s Hockey Club after she moved to Sydney from Perth, several years ago.

“We currently have 47 sporting clubs operating under the Bankstown Sports banner, and Carolyn’s advice, support and knowledge about governance and leadership will be an invaluable resource. The success of Bankstown Sports Club to date, can be largely attributed to the strong relationship between management and the Board. Our Directors know their role and as a collective group, they provide strategic advice, support and governance, while allowing the management team to do its job. I’m confident Carolyn will continue this fantastic relationship”.

There has been plenty of discussion about gender equality over the years, but Bankstown Sports President John Murray says Carolyn has been appointed based on her knowledge and experience, not because she is a woman. “Appointing Carolyn to our Board was never about adding a female to the mix. Diversity on a Board is vital, but as we are all aware, diversity is not just about gender. As part of the Board’s succession plan, it looked at all aspects of the current structure including depth of knowledge, ethnicity, age, experience and gender, and identified key areas that it could potentially strengthen. Carolyn’s knowledge of the sporting sector, her experience as a company director and her passion for netball and hockey, will bring so much to our team and I’m confident that she will continue to take our club from strength to strength”.

Special Olympics BANKSTOWN SPORTS SPONSORED FOUR ATHLETES AT THE 2019 SPECIAL OLYMPICS IN ABU DHABI EARLIER THIS YEAR.

The Special

Olympics World Games aims to promote positive social change for people with intellectual disabilities, and to create a more inclusive society. It is the world’s largest humanitarian sporting event and a global movement which focuses on empowering people through sport. Over 7,000 athletes from over 170 countries came together in Abu Dhabi from 14-21 March to compete in a series of sports, including athletics, badminton, basketball, beach volleyball, cycling, equestrian, gymnastics, handball, swimming and more. Several athletes from the Bankstown and Baulkham Hills areas took part in the event, and we are thrilled to report that they all came away with podium placings in their relevant sports.

18-year-old gymnast Ellen Maher has been involved in gymnastics since she was 5-years-old. She did extremely well in Abu Dhabi, winning gold in both the women’s floor exercise, the balance beam and the all-around, a bronze in the uneven bars, and a fourth placing in vault. Hannah Sandeman and her team won gold in the Traditional Female Basketball event, and Beau Lawson and his team received a gold in the Traditional Male/Mixed Basketball event. Nicole Robinson has been a member of the Special Olympics for 18 years and this year, she won bronze in the Mini Javelin event, placed 5th in the 100m run and 6th with her team in the 4x100m Relay. Ellen, Hannah and Beau all train with the Flinders Club, and Nicole trains

with Sydney West Club, which both provide weekly sports training and regular competition for people with an intellectual disability in the sports of athletics, aquatics, basketball, bocce, gymnastics, tennis and tenpin bowling. Head Gymnastics Coach for Special Olympics Team Australia, Natalie Johnston, says being able to compete in an event like the Special Olympics is such a beneficial experience. “These athletes get to experience the benefits of travelling overseas with a team, being a part of a larger group and support network, build friendships and connections around the world and become a lot more mature and experienced within themselves”. “All of the athletes have been training

non-stop for the last 4 years in the lead-up and preparation to the World Games. It provides a platform for them to strive even further and achieve goals they never thought possible”. “As a coach, it is a very rewarding experience. You feel very proud that you have helped the athletes achieve something that they never dreamed of doing, and have helped them realise that they can do so much more in life too. To see each athlete grow and learn from all of the experiences that are a part of the World Games, including the travel, social interaction and training in the sport, makes everything we do worth it”.

The Australian team were also able to experience some of the UAE culture and hospitality, by visiting the local markets and a school, and had an Arabic dinner

Without the support from clubs

Natalie says without the support from clubs like Bankstown Sports, some of these athletes would not have been able to compete. “We simply would not have been able to support the families and the athletes with the cost of the trip, as much as we have. They would still be fundraising and looking for ways to cover the costs that they have outlaid to go away. The club has contributed greatly to the athletes and families being able to enjoy the experience and not stress as to where they next lot of money will come from to pay for them to go. It is greatly appreciated by all of the families and athletes and Special Olympics Flinders”.

FEATURE STORY TEAMING UP WITH HOXTON INDUSTRIES

Teaming up with Hoxton Industries HOXTON INDUSTRIES IS A SPECIALIST PACKAGING AND RECYCLING COMPANY BASED IN WESTERN SYDNEY, WITH A UNIQUE COMMUNITY-FOCUSED EDGE.

Bankstown Sports

is committed to being a highly sustainable, community organisation, always looking for new ways to reduce our impact on the environment. Recently, we discovered a fantastic organisation that takes recycling and community spirit to a whole new level, and we just had to get involved. Hoxton Industries is unlike any other recycling and packaging company. While it carries out the same operations as others, it also proudly provides meaningful employment to more than 100 people who face barriers to mainstream employment, including disability and disadvantage. Jenny Bartholomew has been a part of the Hoxton Industries family for over 40 years, and is now their Supported Employment Coordinator. She explains how the company came about in 1969, due largely to the efforts of two local women.

10

BANKSTOWN SPORTS INTOUCH JUN, JUL & AUG 2019

“Dot Burrows and Beryl Gwynne decided that their daughters, who were no longer at school, needed a job and an opportunity to learn new skills. Employment opportunities for people with disability were extremely limited at the time, so they embarked on a plan to create a disability-specific workplace. With the support of Liverpool Council, who allocated the land that Hoxton still stands on, as well as local Rotary Clubs, they put a building on the block and started finding work for the newly recruited employees”. Jenny says they currently have 120 employees ranging in age from 17 to 67. “Our employees come to us with a wide range of disabilities, including physical disabilities, intellectual disabilities, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Autism Spectrum Disorder and psychosocial disabilities — and there is a wide range within those specific diagnoses.

FEATURE STORY TEAMING UP WITH HOXTON INDUSTRIES

“Hoxton has recently re-branded as a Social Enterprise (no longer only a Disability Enterprise) and we now provide job opportunities for people facing barriers to mainstream employment — this includes people with disability, of course, but also people who have been long-term unemployed and older workers”. Back in the 1970s, employees of the company would assemble bicycles for the Liverpool store of the hardware empire, Nock & Kirby. Now, Jenny says the workers perform a wide range of duties, with individual skill-levels suited to specific jobs. “Jobs involve a huge variety of packaging, labelling and kit assembly for companies like Johnson & Johnson, BOC Gases, Trend Windows, Rhinorack and CSR Gyprock. We also perform secure destruction of CDs and DVDs for media companies at our Ingleburn site, and process e-waste for recycling. Our latest venture is two Return and Earn bulk container return points where people can return their eligible containers for their 10c refund”. Hoxton Industries assists Bankstown Sports with its glass bottle, plastic bottle

With the new efficiencies made on our recycling costs, we are able to donate funds back to

the great work that they do. and can recycling. Their staff come out to collect the recyclables, taking them back to their processing plant where the materials that are eligible for the rebate scheme are separated from those that are not.

Partnership Figures April figures from the club’s partnership with Hoxton show Bankstown Sports was able to contribute over $1,930 to their Return and Earn Scheme, and 52 hours of work for staff at the company. Under a normal arrangement, Bankstown Sports would receive a 3-cent rebate for all eligible recyclables processed by Hoxton Industries. However, the club has decided to donate that money back to Hoxton Industries, to assist them with their operations. Jenny says they’re excited about the partnership with Bankstown Sports. “Bankstown Sports can dispose of their eligible containers and their e-waste in an environmentally responsible manner. Hoxton benefits from the returns we make on those items — by providing jobs for people with disability, by reducing our reliance on government funding and by providing funds to

create jobs for people facing other barriers to mainstream employment. It’s a win-win for everyone”. Bankstown Sports CEO Mark Condi says Hoxton Industries is doing great things for the community and it’s a privilege to be in partnership with them. “Hoxton Industries aligns directly with our club’s mission statement – ‘Making A Difference’. They are changing the lives of people with disabilities and other disadvantages, by giving them employment and supporting them through life. At the same time, they are helping us to be a more sustainable organisation by assisting with our recycling. And with the new efficiencies made on our recycling costs, we are able to donate funds back to Hoxton Industries to support the great work that they do”. EAT & DRINK BREWHOUSE EXPERIENCE

Private Brewing Experience at Basement Brewhouse SO, YOU’VE HEARD ABOUT THE PRIVATE BREWING EXPERIENCES AT BASEMENT BREWHOUSE, BUT WHAT’S ACTUALLY INVOLVED?

The first

question many people ask us when booking a Private Brewing Experience at Basement Brewhouse is ‘what do we actually get to do?’ The answer – pretty much everything! While a lot of other breweries talk you through the brewing process and show you how the different styles of beer are made, our Head Brewer takes you behind the scenes to create your own beer – and you can be as hands-on as you like. “Participants are able to involve themselves as much as they like. They will be handling raw ingredients, milling grain, mashing-in and adding hops to the boil, with each process being explained and discussed as it’s happening” says Head Brewer Mark Neal. “Another part of their experience is a beer-tasting, where all of our in-house beers are explained by style and flavour profile. Participants will also get to enjoy some of the delicious food from our Burger Bar and Gourmet Delicatessen”.

18

BANKSTOWN SPORTS INTOUCH JUN, JUL & AUG 2019

“And of course, the whole point of the Private Brewing Experience is to create your very own beer. I have a chat to the participants prior to the Brewing Experience to find out what style of beer they would like to brew and any particular ideas they have about flavour profile, and I have everything ready for them when they come in on the day”. Private Brewing Experiences run for approximately 3.5 hours and are available to book Monday – Saturday from 11.30am onwards. Participants are then invited to return to Basement Brewhouse a couple of weeks later to either try their beer ontap, or collect their take-home cans. For all Private Brewing Experience bookings or for more information, please visit;  BankstownSports.com/ brewhouse-brewing-experience

Chef Helmut Creates EAT & DRINK CHEF HELMUT CREATES

HELMUT GUNDENDORFER HAS BEEN OVERSEEING ALL THINGS FOOD AT BANKSTOWN SPORTS FOR ALMOST 20 YEARS, AND SAYS HE IS STILL JUST AS PASSIONATE ABOUT FOOD NOW, AS WHEN HE FIRST BECAME A CHEF.

Executive Chef

Helmut always knew he wanted to work with food and at the age of 15, he figured he would give an apprenticeship a go, to see if he was any good at it. Turns out he was exceptional, and he was hired in a kitchen right after he finished school. After working as the Executive Chef or Head Caterer for a number of other organisations early in his career, Chef Helmut found his home at Bankstown Sports, where he says he is able to explore his creativity every single day. “That’s the thing I love most about being a chef – there is always something new happening in the hospitality industry and we want to try and always be one step ahead of the pack, which means coming up with new and innovative dishes or settings or venues, that our members and guests are going to love”.

Find Chef Helmut on Instagram:  chefhelmutcreates 22

BANKSTOWN SPORTS INTOUCH JUN, JUL & AUG 2019

In recent years, he opened the Burger Bar and Gourmet Delicatessen in Basement Brewhouse, he redesigned the menu for the new-look Cornerstone Coffee & Kitchen, he has taken on the menu management of La Piazza, and is now running the kitchens at The Acres Club and Auburn Tennis Club.

That’s on top of running Greenfield Station Bistro and Platform One, the club’s catering and functions menus, and special events like Mother’s Day High Tea and Oktoberfest. Chef Helmut says he still gets a kick out of creating new menus for any of his restaurants.

t s

“I always do my research first and check out what the top chefs are doing in their restaurants. I see what the current trends are, and I google a lot! Sometimes I’ll go back to books or flick through magazines for inspiration. Once I decide on a direction or a theme, I sit down with my chefs and I give them a few ideas on dishes they could create, we map out a menu plan and then they go away and start working on some new creations”. “I love making a good paella or risotto. In summer, I love a nice BBQ or a good salad. A nice watermelon salad with quinoa and some prawns is beautiful in the hot weather. In winter, I usually go with a warmer, heartier dish”.

There is always something new happening in the hospitality industry and

we want to try

and always be one step ahead of the pack

You can now follow Helmut on Instagram where he is sharing recipes, as well as new and up-coming creations, and a look at what goes on behind-the-scenes at Bankstown Sports.

ENJOY COMEDY

Footy Fundraiser

DIRECT FR

FOR THE 1

BANKSTOWN SPORTS STARS FC HAS JOINED FORCES WITH A RIVAL FOOTBALL CLUB TO HOST A COMEDY NIGHT FUNDRAISER AT BANKSTOWN SPORTS.

It’s not

very often you hear of two different sporting clubs in the same competition having to share a home ground. But that’s what happened last season, when Greenacre Eagles FC found themselves homeless, because Allum Park was undergoing refurbishment. The club had to relocate all of its training and home game operations to Kearns Oval and Buchanan Park – the home ground of Bankstown Sports Stars FC. This was no mean feat with dozens of teams needing space and time to train and play home games. But both clubs decided to make it work and were very accommodating of one another, in what was a very challenging arrangement. The move meant that both clubs took a hit financially, as they had to share the revenue each would have made from their regular operations; things like canteen sales. Instead of just writing the year off, their committees got together and came up with the idea to hold a Comedy Fundraiser, which would put both clubs and their communities back on track for the 2019 season, and beyond. Stars On The Rise will be held in The Theatre at Bankstown Sports on Thursday 20 June, featuring well-known local funny-men, Rob Shehadie and Tahir Bilgic. Tickets are $45 each and there will be raffles on the night with some great prizes on offer. Proceeds will go to help both Bankstown Sports Stars FC and Greenacre Eagles FC with their operations and associated costs. This is not just a show dedicated to the players and families of the Eagles and Stars - all are welcome for what will be a hilarious night! For more information and to book your seat, visit;  BankstownSports.com/live-shows or visit; Bankstown Sports main reception.

Vale Dot Brewer OAM WE PAY TRIBUTE TO A PIONEER OF WOMEN’S CRICKET IN THE BANKSTOWN AREA, AND WE PREPARE FOR BANKSTOWN SPORTS STRIKERS’ 60TH ANNIVERSARY.

If you’ve

ever been involved in women’s cricket in NSW, there’s a good chance you have heard the name Dot Brewer OAM. In fact, there is an entire competition named in recognition of the enormous contribution she and her husband Bob made to the game. It’s called the Women’s Premier Cricket Under 18 Brewer Shield and in this year’s final, held in March at North Sydney, Bankstown Sports was runner-up. Together with her husband, Dot pioneered the establishment of the Berala Women’s Cricket Club in the early 1980s, and she also played a role in the administration of the Sydney Women’s Grade Competition, prior to its merger with the Sydney Cricket Association. She was one of the most popular figures in NSW Women’s Cricket and was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in recognition of

46

BANKSTOWN SPORTS INTOUCH JUN, JUL & AUG 2019

her service to the sport in 1992. That same decade, she was also made a Life Member of the Sydney Women’s Cricket Association. In more recent years, Dot was a loved supporter and ambassador of Bankstown Sports Women’s Cricket Club. Australian wicket-keeper batter, and NSW Breakers Captain Alyssa Healy says Dot was a guiding and encouraging figure for her from an early age. “Dot and Bob were ever-present at school girl and under-age National Championships. Dot’s passion for supporting and growing the game was inspiring”. Sadly, on 18 March, Dot passed away after a short illness. She is being remembered as an encouraging, caring and remarkable lady by all those fortunate enough to have known her.

Strathfield Football Club joins the family

LOCAL SPORT STRATHFIELD FOOTBALL CLUB JOINS THE FAMILY

Sports Report

IT’S THE BEGINNING OF A NEW CHAPTER FOR STRATHFIELD FC, WHO HAVE OFFICIALLY JOINED THE BANKSTOWN SPORTS FAMILY, AND WILL BE PARTNERING WITH THE ACRES CLUB.

With over

800 members in both summer and winter competitions, across teams from Under 6s to Over 35s, they are the largest sporting club in the Municipality of Strathfield. The club’s mission to promote and encourage participation in junior sport directly aligns with the Bankstown Sports Charter, which is why they have come onboard. Strathfield FC President Davide Graniero says the partnership with Bankstown Sports has come at an exciting time in their club’s history. “We are entering our 51st year as a not-for-profit community club, and the largest sporting club in the Strathfield LGA. We aim to promote

and encourage sportsmanship, teamwork, character and integrity within ourselves, our teams and our community. But above all, we are a family club and we want to ensure every single member has fun”. Strathfield FC held a launch day at The Acres Club on Saturday 16 March with over 1,000 players, officials, parents, family and friends in attendance. The venue was a sea of green as the kids proudly wore their new 2019 playing kits that were handed out on the day. “We rely on sponsors to help deliver the best service to our members, and a partnership with The Acres Club makes perfect sense. It allows our members to enjoy the fantastic

facilities, in an area that is largely accessible by members with young families, and adults looking for a venue to socialise”. Strathfield FC will benefit from funding and in-kind support provided by Bankstown Sports and The Acres Club which will go towards lowering costs associated with fees such as uniform purchase. The committee will also benefit from the resource and administrative support provided to all sporting clubs in the Bankstown Sports Network under the GOAL (Governance, Operations and Administrative Level) program.
