I trust that you and your family had a safe and enjoyable festive season to set you up for 2016. Our Events Unit is in full swing as business organisations, sporting clubs and community groups have been calling in record numbers, to book our conference and meeting facilities. Last year was busy at the club, with a number of significant developments completed. This year promises to be just as exciting and busy with plans that will soon unfold. Thanks for all your patience and understanding, while the builders were in. The expansion of the Travelodge Bankstown has been completed ahead of schedule. In fact the fitout of the new rooms will be finished by the end of March and within a matter of weeks work will begin on renovating and refreshing the existing rooms on the floors below. I am pleased to say that your board of directors has been encouraged by the progress and the performance of the club. At our last board meeting an investment of $16 million was approved on new developments, so that the club can maintain the pace of managing change and progress, in the interest of our members. We thought that work needs to begin carefully researching, planning and implementing facilities to meet with the expectations of our members. We want to make sure your club is constantly moving forward. You will have noticed the new staircase, leading from the Rainforest Lounge down to the Sports Bar. This was completed just before the New Year. Our intention is to redevelop the Sports Bar and convert this venue into a contemporary dining facility or ‘Brew House’ – a trend that is becoming popular the world over. The new design concept will appeal to both men and women alike, with a variety of craft beer, some of which will be brewed on the premises. Our chefs are creating exciting burgers and light gourmet meals that will appeal to most members and patrons, who may wish to visit the ‘Brew House’.

The toilets in the Rainforest Lounge will be gutted and rebuilt with a fresh, new look so that the facilities are modern, comfortable and convenient for all to use. Lucky Cheng’s noodle bar opened just before Christmas and immediately became popular. This success has prompted us to continue with our expansion plans. The first stage is an additional 40 seats, as originally planned. We have also encouraged the management team to proceed with extending the existing noodle station to accommodate an additional dumpling facility, so you can see how dumplings are filled and prepared; fresh, on site. The plans will also include Lucky Cheng’s expanding to stage two of the ‘Asian Precinct’. We have set ourselves a target of finalising all plans within the next three months, while our intention is to complete all these developments by the end of this year. Don’t forget that Mother’s Day will be celebrated on Sunday 8 May 2016. It is a good occasion to acknowledge and reward our mothers and grandmothers alike, so consider bringing Mum and the family along to one of our dining facilities across all our venues in Bankstown, Birrong and Baulkham Hills. Platform One at Bankstown Sports will have a special Mother’s Day ‘High Tea’ too. You can be sure that our chefs and staff will do all they can to make the day special.

Growing old is something none of us can avoid. There will come a time when we can’t look after ourselves as we used to. A PROUD HISTORY Joining Bankstown City Aged Care in 1972, Bankstown Sports is proud to be a founding member of this not-for-profit organisation, one that is part of the heart of our vibrant community. To date, we have contributed over $3.7m to help meet the needs of its 350-plus residents and over 270 clients, and provide support for numerous community-based programmes.

OUR MOST RECENT DONATION Recently, outgoing Bankstown City Aged Care CEO Terry Madden reached out to us with a specific concern. The dementia facility, known as Gillawarna Village, set in delightful gardens

that house 150 residents plus another 20 clients per day, could never afford to suffer a blackout, one of which had recently occurred at another facility. “Interruptions to the power supply would leave residents stranded,” Mr Madden said, “they would be unable to access oxygen, food, light, heating and cooling. “Electric beds would stop operating and residents couldn’t move safely around the facility,” he added, “you can imagine the distress this would cause residents and carers alike.” Fortunately, there was an answer. A new back-up generator would solve the Village’s electricity problems, and so Bankstown Sports put $120,000 towards that purchase to make it a reality. The new generator now protects the Village’s 170 clients from any adverse incidents affecting the power supply. “Quite simply, this is another example of the huge generosity of Bankstown Sports and how their partnership with Bankstown City Aged Care benefits the elderly and those suffering dementia,” said Mr Madden, “All of us, from the administration staff and the carers, to the families of those in our care, are most grateful for this outstanding support.”

MANY FACILITIES, ONE GOAL Bankstown City Aged Care has a clear mission to create caring environments to support the rights and dignity of those who are disabled, living with dementia, or otherwise disadvantaged, with primary consideration given to residents of the Bankstown local government area, including surrounding suburbs. Deeply ingrained is the pursuit of excellence, along with values that respect the individual, emotional, physical, spiritual and social needs of those it looks after.

HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS Home Based Care Services are integral to this mission, ranging from on call 24-hour emergency assistance to help with light housework, laundry, transportation, shopping, banking, support equipment and personal care. A twice-weekly programme at the purposebuilt Activities Centre at Georges Hall alleviates the loneliness and boredom older people sometimes feel living at home, often on their own. A bus service enables clients to catch up with friends, socialise, share nutritious meals, be entertained and go on monthly outings.

And, for our much-loved war heroes, a Veterans Home Care programme enables veterans, war widows and widowers to stay at home longer than would otherwise be possible. With Senior’s Week and Mothers’ Day on the calendar, Bankstown Sports salutes the immense dedication of all the staff at Bankstown City Aged Care, and is enormously proud to contribute to the wonderful service they provide. WITH MEMBER # 110 “The club was the place to go, it was your social life… everyone was involved and pitched in.”

There are not many left – 25 to be precise. Some have passed away, others have moved from the area. But foundation members like Bob (“Quinella”) Rudd, still remember the early times like they were yesterday – days when Bankstown Sports was in its infancy, and the original clubhouse was an old church with the beer kept cool in the baptismal fountain. “It all started in 1953, but the club had no licence back then,” explains this cheery fellow, “but that changed in 1959 when it became official. So while I’ve been a member for over 60 years, I suppose my membership really only dates from then.” THE ORIGINAL BANKSTOWN SPORTS CLUBHOUSE

Bob met his wife Pamela at a dance in the local Masonic Hall when she was 15, and married her three years later. Today they have a son, two daughters, 11 grand children and 16 great grand children, “and we’re still counting!” laughs Bob. Recently, they celebrated 60 happy years of marriage and, not surprisingly, chose to hold the event at their favourite venue, staying at The Travelodge after entertaining guests in Imperial Jade Palace. As Pam put it, “we just had to come here.” “We used to come to the club for dances on Saturday night,” explained Bob, “and there was

Ladies’ Night on Tuesdays when the girls would play table tennis,“ chimed in Pam, “in those days you didn’t have to drink to have fun.” “Back then, you knew everyone by name. The club was the place to go, it was your social life, and it was a way of keeping people together in the community,” Bob continued. “Everyone was involved and pitched in. For example, I was a cement renderer and worked as a volunteer helping to build the club’s original squash courts (now defunct). My brother George was a truck driver, he was Vice President in the 70’s.” As for sports, Bob has lots of memories – and quite a few accolades to his name. He played A-Grade cricket for the Club, won no less than three golf championships, played

in the baseball team against the State side that cricketers Ian Chappell and Norm O’Neill played in to keep fit, and was a regular in the Snooker Room where he was considered a “one-eyed” player. “I remember seeing Eddie Charlton play in the auditorium in an exhibition match. And Ilsa Konrads (former Olympian swimmer) was one of the Club’s more famous protégés.” Dig a little deeper however, and you’ll find this proud gent has one other rare achievement that went straight to the trophy room – that of scoring a hole-in-one. “I’ve still got the ball,” beams Bob.

According to this 81 year-old member, the secret to the Club’s success and growth lies in its sporting foundations. By putting money back into the community, and supporting those in need, over the years it has helped keep kids off the street, and encouraged them to make something of themselves. So what then, is the lasting thought of this wise man as he looks around the flourishing surroundings of today? “I’m proud. It feels good to be part of what I’ve done for the club.” “You’ve got to have someone who starts everything” he said with what was maybe a watery eye, “and that’s what all the original members did, and hoped for. This is our legacy.”

BIG THINGS GROW Plans are underway to build the club’s office complex, the Flinders Centre. Work is expected to begin soon on the club’s newest eight-storey office tower, to be built on top of the club with the entrance in Restwell Street. The tower has been named the Flinders Centre in honour of navigator Captain Matthew Flinders who sailed up the Georges River in 1795. Construction should take about 18 months. Four high-speed glass lifts will provide a sleek finish to the office block which will be the newest and highest in the Bankstown area – affording good views across the district. As well as 10,500 square metres of lettable space, there will be 450 square metres of retail space at ground floor level. “We are seeking pre-commitments now to lease the office space,” Mark Condi, CEO says. “It’s a very exciting development for the club and again fits with our vision to provide our members and patrons with the top level experiences. This area has a workforce of 83,000 – so that’s a substantial pool of talent to draw from, and when the tower is full, it has a capacity of some 1500 people. 8

“We expect that people working in the Flinders Centre will become regulars at the club – taking full advantage of our first-class dining and café options, the bars and our conference facilities. The investment should bring multiple benefits to the club – and is part of our long-term vision.” The Flinders Centre has been designed by architects Kannfinch and will be built by the club’s long-time builders, Paynter Dixon. “What I’m really proud of will be the energy efficiency of the building. It will receive the highest ratings (Green Star and NABERS) for an office building in the area,” Mark says. “In line with the club’s sustainability policies.” It will also have access for people with disabilities, showers and secure storage for pushbikes. TO HEAVEN A new stairway is the first of a number of renovations to the Total Sports Bar taking place throughout the year. “This downstairs bar is not known to everyone,” says Chief Executive Mark Condi, “because it’s been a bit hidden and hard to find. So we thought it was time to open it up, refresh and modernise its look and make it more inviting for everyone.” What’s on the cards?

“The Rainforest Bar was very long and was built many years ago so it hadn’t kept pace with best practice to achieve an efficient level of service and speed for customers.

“But, it will still be the place to watch all kinds of sports, to play pool and to bet on any games or races,” Mark says.

“The new bar is more compact and that has improved service. As well as that it has a really fresh, new look and features large, inviting moving images on screens and a great new selection of craft beers and other exciting drink offerings.

“Something I am really excited about is the opening up of a whole section of wall to reveal the club’s cellar with the kegs of beer and beer lines going off in many different directions. That will now be on display through glass – which it never has been before – so that’ll be an interesting new

Members have been craning their necks to see what’s been building just outside the club and the answer is not far off. A giant crane has been working to finish the four extra floors on the club’s Travelodge Hotel.

As Chief Executive Officer Mark Condi explains, a hotel is a natural fit for clubs as it complements the existing facilities. “Every week we play host to dozens of conferences and meetings with businesses, large and small, and for community groups and associations. We are also a venue for weddings and other family celebrations. Being able to offer accommodation too, creates great value for our members and customers,” Mark says.

“Four floors are being added, two for now and two for future growth,” Mark says. “That means two floors will be fitted out with new furniture – along with a complete refit throughout the hotel – and the top two floors will be fitted out in the future as demand grows.” “The Travelodge was built in 1998 and patronage has grown steadily to about 90 per cent occupancy over the years. It’s a very popular option, particularly on weekends,” Mark says, “Especially as part of our entertainment packages. More and more people want to make a night of it and not have to worry about getting home. It’s the icing on the cake for an extra special evening. Just jump in the lift and you’re relaxing in first-class comfort.”

If you haven’t tried this superb cuisine before, Gable recommends one of his “Signature Dishes”, such as the Cheng-Made Wontons mixed with handmade noodles (soup). This is presentation at its finest: handmade noodles accompany the softest of wontons and green bok choi in a rich chicken soup. The wontons themselves are bite-sized dumplings of minced pork and prawn, popping with texture and flavour. Each is a taste sensation, including Spicy Minced Pork, Boneless Slow-Roasted Duck, Spicy Marinated Sliced Beef, Shallots and Shitake Mushroom, Teriyaki Chicken and Asian greens with tofu. Of course, a ‘cleansing ale’ is ideal with these dishes and Lucky Cheng’s has traditional Tsingtao beer – served brilliantly cold – plus a wide selection of beverages from local beers to wines, spirits, jasmine tea, juices and soft drinks. On top of the exquisite noodles, you’ll discover another rarity at Lucky Cheng’s – rolled handmade pancakes – or roti. There are two signature entrees for you to try. The first is Shredded Peking Duck rolled in a supremely light handmade pancake, cut horizontally into manageable pieces.

DRINKING WITH YOUR EYES “We’ll make them up and try different combinations, colours, garnishes and ingredients until we’re satisfied. Sometimes we’ll buy in special glassware just for one type of cocktail,” he added, “such as the Teddy Bear, which comes in a glass that’s shaped like the honey jar people used to have as kids!” “Presentation is everything. Just like food when you plate up, a successful cocktail must have appetite appeal, because you are also drinking with your eyes. Members often ask staff if they could ‘have what they’re having’ when they see someone else ordering one of our colourful creations.”

AN EVOLUTIONARY PROCESS Mostly, inventing new and exciting cocktails is an evolution, rather than a revolution. Take the popular Espresso Martini for instance. In the hands of the team at Atrium Bar this particular cocktail has been transformed into a completely new drinking experience that’s been dubbed 'The Pharmaceutical Stimulant' (many versions were tried and tested). The Espresso Martini began with the basic mix of Grey Goose Vodka, Kahlua and fresh

coffee with a garnish of three coffee beans. Then, the vodka was changed to 666 Tasmanian Coffee Vodka and poured at the table from an espresso pot. For even more authenticity, the Kahlua was upgraded to Mr Black, a liqueur blended from real coffee, raw sugar syrup also replaced processed sugar syrup. This is when the Espresso Martini transformed and was named The Pharmaceutical Stimulant. Finally, and sparing nothing in the relentless pursuit of the perfect blend, the club installed a cold dripped coffee tower especially for the bar, so that hot coffee didn’t need to be cooled by ice during preparation. To add to that, Chef Tony Chanya, from Platform One now makes whipped vanilla cream to top it all off, and you have the most delicious, most fresh, and most real coffee cocktail ever.

BOUTIQUE BEER TOO This premium experience doesn’t stop with cocktails either. “We have nine craft beers going at the moment,” explains Mr Clancy, “we only order one keg at a time and constantly rotate the amazing choices provided by small, local, independent breweries that are popping up.” “And because these boutique beverages come in different colours, we’ve installed unique taps that have a glass top, allowing drinkers to see the beer flowing as it’s poured.” With all this care and listening to members – and pride in performance by the friendly staff – it’s little wonder that the Atrium Bar has been so successful. WOODCHOPPERS RETURN THIS EASTER

The Easter Sunday wood chopping show is back even bigger and better. We talk to David Foster, World Champion axeman, and go behind the scenes to discover more about this heart-stopping sport steeped in Australian history. Welcome David, from all of us at the club.

That sounds like fun – is there any risk?

Thank you, it’s a pleasure to be invited back to my “second home” as I call it!

No, not at all. It’s fully supervised and we'll all be wearing safety gear. They only have to hit the log five times to win the event.

What's new and what can we expect this year? This year we’re having an actual competition between four people – including Victorian champion Kevin Williams and myself – complete with timed handicaps just like in the professional competitions.

The chainsaw carving returns too. Can you describe it for those who missed it last year? It’s an amazing feat actually. It’s loud, it’s precise and it’s artistic. You’ll see two chairs carved in front of you with a special electric chainsaw – one with

a love heart for the ladies and one with a king’s insignia for the men. Then we give them away to the kids. Sounds like an amazing show for all the family! Well it is and that’s one of the things we’re most proud of with this show, because wood chopping has always been a family-orientated sport with sons following their fathers and grandfathers,

and more recently daughters and granddaughters participating. Your father George Foster was overall champion back in 1970 wasn’t he? Yes, dad competed in the first truly World Championship event staged in Ulverstone in the north of Tasmania in 1970. There were over 300 representatives competing with teams from Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the United States. Didn’t the first recorded competition take place at Ulverstone? It did indeed, back in 1870, when two blokes who thought they were the best wood-choppers around made a bet of £25 and battled it out behind the hotel with 3-foot standing blocks! One was a local veterinarian called Joseph Smith and the other, Jack Briggs, harked from Warragul in Victoria. Do you know who won? Well history records that the two logs fell together, but that Smith claimed the title. Apparently that was hotly disputed and a free-for-all brawl broke out! And was that the start of this unique Australian sport? Yes, because soon after that, chopping competitions were held all over Australia and this led to the need for formalised rules. In 1891 the United Australasian Axeman’s Association was established and the first world championship was held – and the sport was formally recognised.

It’s clear that wood chopping is steeped in Australia’s history. It’s unique in that it’s a sport that comes from daily work, from an actual occupation. Here in Tasmania, there were big families of woodchoppers, people who’d go out into the forests for days and cut mountain ash, like the famous Youd family who produced 15 champions. It was through sporting competitions that Bill and Doug Youd became known as the best in the world in treefelling.

Is that what makes wood chopping so original, so Australian, the fact that it comes from our pioneers? I believe so. In fact, I’d go one step further and say that wood chopping is Australia’s first original sport. It’s just a guess, but I reckon it all started back with Captain Cook and the First Fleet. What makes you say that? Simply because of that first Flag Pole. I don’t think Captain Cook would’ve had one on board ready to go on the first landing, so they would’ve had to find and cut down their first sapling to make one. Maybe felling that sapling was the first thing done on this soil! That’s an interesting theory David! Thanks for talking with us and we look forward to seeing you and the others fly the flag for this fantastic Aussie sport once more. My pleasure. Brothers3, Mudgee’s famous farm boys, showcase their stunning new hit Brothers Never Part in The Theatre on Saturday 9 April. You may have seen them perform their sweet harmonies at any of six appearances at Tamworth Music Festival, or on The X Factor when they won third place, but now you have the chance to get up close and personal when the Brothers3 get back to their country roots in their brand new show for 2016.

Brothers3 are Makirum, Tayzin and Shardyn Fahey-Leigh who started performing when they were just 10, 11 and 12 years old respectively. They were brought up in rural NSW without electricity, running water, or sewerage, just so their mother could afford to buy them instruments and drive them to gigs across the country.

“Brothers Never Part is about our experience after The X Factor,” says Makirum, “but it is so much more than that – it’s not just a single, it’s a mission statement.”

From these humble beginnings and after seven years of hard work, they successfully auditioned for The X Factor and soon found

Then, free from the demands of their heavy TV schedule, the three brothers hit the road, toured extensively, signed a record deal with Warners Music – and emerged with new work including their exciting new single Brothers Never Part.

“We learned so much throughout the entire The X Factor process,” explains Mak, “every week, it pushed us beyond our limits and, as brothers, we became even closer, and Brothers Never Part reflects that unique bond.” “The X Factor actually helped us realise what we

really wanted to do. While we could easily continue with pop covers, we discovered it was important for us to stay true to our country roots in some of our material and to write a few of our own songs,” he said. That led to a creative collaboration with songwriter Daniel Skeed and record producer Matt Fell and from there, Brothers Never Part was born. Notably, it showcases the superb vocal harmonies of these three talented boys from the bush, features overlays of haunting mandolin and banjo lines from Shardyn, and has a few unexpected surprises including some stunning Spaghetti Western flourishes. ANZAC DAY ROLLUP! The ANZAC Day Mixed Fours Bowls for Legacy is on again this year. Hosted by the Bankstown Sports Men’s Bowls Club, the event is open to the public and anyone of any ability may play in teams of any male/female combination. All money raised on the day from the entry fees, raffles and lunch will be donated to Bankstown Legacy. In this its fourth year, it is expected that funds raised will take the total to more than $10,000. John Murray, Bankstown Sports President says “It’s a social, fun and memorable day. We encourage all our members and their guests to joins us at Bankstown Sports Bowls in support of an organisation as important as Legacy.” Additionally Bankstown Sports Men’s Bowling club member Stuart De Pede (pictured), hopes to increase fundraising by shaving his hair on the day. BIRRONG NETBALL SPORTS CLUB The 2016 netball season is fast approaching and this dynamic group of women has some fascinating – and unique – qualities that set it apart. Birrong translates into “star” in the Koori language and is a wonderfully appropriate name for this club of netballers. Not only do they have many indigenous players, but you’ll also find a number of mothers and daughters in starring combinations! The Birrong Sports Netball Club is part of the larger Bankstown City Netball Association and, within the Birrong Club is a group of players, the South Western Kookaburras, who have competed in the annual Koori competition since 2001.

MOTHERS AND DAUGHTERS Many mother/daughter combinations play for Birrong, both indigenous and non-indigenous. Of the team that competes in Division Four, six players have represented Bankstown City Netball Association at State

level in the Over 45s division, and also in the Netball NSW Masters competition. No less than four of these mums have daughters playing this popular sport – including Raelene Allen, now in her 45th year – and, in the Koori team, there are two ‘mum-and-daughter’ combinations.

HISTORY IN THE MAKING The South West Kookaburras formed five years ago and play every year in the Koori Netball Tournament held at Charlestown, near Lake Macquarie.

Birrong Division Three’s Coach is Terri Hill and together with her daughter Natalie and two sisters Leanne and Sheree are all members of the of the South West Kookas.

“In the first three years, we were self-funded,” explained Terrie, “but now, thanks to both Bankstown Sports Club and the Bankstown City Netball Association, we have sponsorship for uniforms and registration fees.”

Then there’s Celeste Dargan, Coach and Manager of the South West Kookas, also indigenous, whose daughter Natasha, whilst not a Birrong player, is a proud Koori representative.

Even better, this support is paying dividends on the court.

INDIGENOUS REPRESENTATIVES In case you’re wondering, the Koori competition allows two non-indigenous players on the team, filled this year by Brooke Dredge and Katrina Ortland.

In an amazingly tight final last October against their arch rivals from La Perouse, the South West Kookaburras dug deep and pulled off a stunning victory 24 points to 18 to win the Open B category – and Sheree Hill won Player of the Series!

Albie Thomas Night of Miles A large and welcoming crowd turned out at the Crest, Bass Hill to witness something special on 17 December. Hosted by Bankstown Sports Athletics Club, the Albie Thomas Night of Miles attracted athletes from all over the area to compete in a race which celebrates the life of one of Australia’s greatest distance runners, Albie Thomas – the first athlete to break the sub four-minute mile on grass in 1960. In an incredibly emotional race, Jordan Gusman won the 2015 Albie Thomas Mile and also achieved the first ever sub four minute

VOLLEYING ACROSS THE COURT Bankstown Sports’ Tennis Club member, has bounced his way through some tough tie breaks recently. Michael Ponticello, a young player with a big passion for tennis, battled through leukaemia last year with tremendous support from his tennis peers. He has recovered well and is now back on court training up a storm amongst his fellow competitors at the newly constructed facilities at the Bankstown Campus of Western Sydney University. The new roof was recently completed and provides all-weather protection unlike any other facility in the area. Michael himself has been also been encouraged by his recent encounter with Roger Federer to get back on the court with his club mates and have some fun. The words

of encouragement from the Swiss master have no doubt left a mark on our young hopeful. Michael was thrilled and inspired by a recent ‘brush with fame’ when he met world tennis master Roger Federer.
