Cycling in Akita, Japan

Akita prefecture is located in the north west of mainland Japan, only 3 hours by bullet train (“Shinkansen) from Tokyo. The main attraction is the stunning scenery of each season: cherry blossom blooming beautifully in spring; spectacular fireworks lighting up the night sky in summer; the leaves turning brightly coloured yellow and red in autumn; and the cold weather of winter covering the area in snow.

On the course there are lines of conifers with their evergreen leaves and you can also enjoy jogging while gazing at the remarkable azure lake. The sound of the breeze, the charming villages, the characteristic blue mountain stream at Daki-Gaeri, and the outstanding landscapes lead you to the Japanese Inn. Here you can refresh your body in the famous hot springs (“Onsen) and spend some time relaxing.

Let’ s explore North Time Bikeway

The next day you head to Ohdai Skiing slope from the inn. The route has a magnificent view overlooking Daisen City. Picturesque yellow and green rice fields fan out endlessly. After that, ride past hundreds of years old pine trees and an avenue of cedars to Misato Town. There are many active natural springs here as well, and the water from these pristine springs is used to make local drinks and food

The journey starts from Lake Tazawa which is well known as the deepest lake in Japan with a depth of 423m. It is ideal for beginner cyclists as the approximately 20km ring road that surrounds the lake is relatively flat. There is very little traffic and few traffic lights which make attractive conditions for road cycling.

Daisen city is the "City of ďŹ reworks" with fireworks that can be seen all year long. Large scale firework festivals are held each season, impressing the viewer!

that are delicious. In early summer you can enjoy the superb views of lavender fields.

The final leg of the journey will end in the former castle town of Kakunodate, which is called Little Kyoto in Michinoku. The town is famous for it’s samurai tradition and a number of samurai residences including the well preserved Buke Yashiki remain. For cherry blossom season, the trees along Hinokinai river become pink, while around October, beautifully coloured leaves decorate Buke Yashiki. It is an absolute pleasure to cycle through this town. There are many options in this area, such as a hill climb to Nyuto onsen, and a variety of courses fit in each firework festival. This area will surely be famous among cyclists soon. North Time Bikeway is the perfect destination to enjoy the gentle nature of the quintessential Japanese landscape.

RokugĹ? Spring Waters, a spring water town that was chosen as one of Japan's top 100 brand names. Temples, well established candy shops, cafes and walks can be enjoyed.
