Sustainability at Banner

Since our journey began, we’ve had a clear vision. We want every garment we produce to have a positive impact on our planet, the people we work with and the students who wear our products every day.

Our sustainability journey began in 2019 when we embraced our responsibility to do the right thing for our planet and future generations. We decided to transform our approach to sustainability and put these challenges at the heart of our business, starting with our products.

Meeting Planetary and Social Priorities

Our commitment to doing the right thing for the planet and our people is best demonstrated in our B Corp journey. Holding B Corp certification tells the world that we meet high standards of social and environmental performance, whilst also remaining committed to continuously improving our impact. As we grow, we care even more about the wonderful planet we share and the people and communities we work with who need our support.

We believe schoolwear has the power to make a difference to people’s lives

Our ‘head to toe’ in Eco schoolwear ranges provide children with an equal opportunity to develop, perform and feel confident in the knowledge that the uniforms they are wearing have been made with less harm to the environment, the workers who made them are treated fairly and are paid a living wage within their country of origin.

We take a holistic approach and set out to develop and deliver what we regard as the most holistic sustainability strategy in the schoolwear sector focussing on meeting the needs of our planet and people across 6 sustainability pillars.

Our Strategic Sustainability Pillars Our Approach

The 6 pillars form the basis of our sustainability strategy, each with its own objective, measures and senior management champions. The framework closely aligns with the five B Corp Impact areas (Governance, Workers, Environment, Community and Customers) and ensures every part of our business is engaged in the journey. Each pillar has led us on a journey of continuous improvement in terms of environmental and social impacts.

We ensure the overseas supplier factories producing our brochure stock are all Sedex members and audited to ensure compliance with Sedex 4 Pillar / SMETA Audits, which include extended business ethics and environmental measures.

We’re focused on reducing our environmental footprint and maintaining our carbon-neutral status. We’re also working with our supplier factories to reduce water consumption, waste and conserve energy.

Product

We design and source the best products sustainably and have launched a full range of innovative eco-products made from recycled polyester and biodegradable viscose.

Community

We’re giving back to local community projects and charities with fundraising and our Gift of Time volunteering programme for employees.

We actively engage with our customers to get their views on eco issues, as well as record and act on their feedback to shape our future strategy and green initiatives. We’re also supporting their sustainability journey and delivering a faultless service.

We ensure our employees’ voices are heard through an annual engagement survey and “pulse” surveys to ensure they feel “safe, supported and understood” and through a structured programme of well-being, mental health support and engagement activities.

Our B Corp Journey

Banner Ltd became a certified B Corporation in December 2023.

B Corp is the ‘gold standard’ for businesses to aspire to, measuring social and environmental impact.

We’re proud to have achieved B Corp certification. We have now joined a growing number of companies worldwide that are committed to using business as a force for good among workers, suppliers, their community, and the environment.

On a local level, we’ve also joined the Bristol and Bath B Local Group, where we look forward to learning from and collaborating with other B Corp businesses in our area.

What does the 88.1 score mean?

To certify, you must achieve a minimum score of 80 across 5 impact areas as shown on the graphic. Every point and every fraction of a point is hard to achieve.

We are only at the beginning of this exciting journey and intend to grow in our role, creating a more sustainable and fairer future for all. We are already working towards even higher standards of performance, accountability and transparency in supply chain practices, sustainable materials, employee benefits and charitable giving. Meaning we will try to do even better over the next 2 years ready to recertify in December 2026.

Setting the standard in ethical sourcing.

We’re confident we’ve developed the most sustainable and ethical supply chain in our industry, backed up by strong independent accreditations. Since 2006, we’ve been a member of Sedex (Supplier Ethical Data Exchange), one of the world’s leading ethical trade service providers, as part of our commitment to improving the working conditions in global supply chains.

Our Environment

The environment and low carbon principles are a huge focus of our sustainability strategy. And while we’ve achieved a lot so far, we intend to go bigger, better and bolder with our environmental commitments, investing in projects that reduce our emissions and reduce or eliminate any detrimental impact on biodiversity.

Our work so far has resulted in us becoming the first UK schoolwear supplier to set Sedex 4-Pillar as the minimum audit standard for all our suppliers to comply with. This means all our suppliers are independently assessed to the highest requirements in crucial areas such as fair pay, labour standards, health & safety, business ethics and environmental impact.

We’re continually working to improve all aspects of our environmental and social responsibility, minimising the impacts of our operations on the planet, while at the same time optimising the benefits of what we do for our people and the people we work with. It’s why we’re recognised as the schoolwear supplier that’s leading the way in sustainability.

Trim, Cording & Braiding

Adding trim to garments offers an individual touch for schools wanting to stand out. Options we offer include bound, taped, corded edges and inserted braid trim in a huge array of colours.

Stripes

Adding stripe trim in one or two stripe options to the neck, cuffs, welt and stolling of all our knitwear provides added personalisation for schools which can either complement or contrast with blazer and jacket trims.

Lining

Jacquard lining adds the quality finishing touch to many of our tailored blazer and suiting jackets. For a complete bespoke look, we also offer bespoke coloured lining options to suit your requirements.

William Turner has a 50-year school tie manufacturing heritage and makes most ties in their UK factory. They also offer offshore options that suit every budget.

Each tie has been made across two weavers near their factory in Nelson, Lancashire.

To meet the needs of schools and students, their products include an exceptional variety of school bags (from nursery to senior school) and a whole host of other accessories.

Next-day UK delivery is available for stock items if ordered before 4 pm.

Forward Orders

Stock lines:

Orders not taken within two weeks of the originally agreed dispatch date will be cancelled.

Tolerances:

Due to the nature of the manufacturing process we may receive more or less garments than the original order stated. If the quantities are within 10% of the original order quantity we will dispatch and invoice the receipted quantity.

Embroidery Daily Lead Times

• Up to 30 blazers or 72 other garments - 5 working days for orders received before 12.00pm

• 31 - 72 blazers or 73 - 150 other garments7 working days for orders received before 12.00pm

• 73+ blazers or 151 + other garments - 10 working days for orders received before 12.00pm. Please be advised this may differ depending on order quantity

Braid Daily Lead Times

The daily lead time for braid is 7 working days.

However, if you raise an order for over 100 pieces with any of the below:

• 3 Pockets

• Cuffs

• Inserted trim

The lead time would be 10 working days.

Export Orders

A surcharge of 10% on freight costs will be applied if customers do not have their own account with any freight forwarder. Stock orders are not guaranteed for next day dispatch.

Throughout this catalogue all “Junior” sizes means clothing designed for children under the age of 14 years are zero rated.

Actual garment measurements are in inches unless otherwise specified, and are subject to normal manufacturing tolerances. Colour blocks are for guidance only.

Returns

We like to keep things as simple as possible for our customers. We have tried to keep our Returns Policy hassle free and request that, before sending goods back to us, you:

Returns - Key points to note:

• Garments to be returned must be notified to Banner and returned, no later than 3 months from the date of invoice, with an authorised returns number.

• Discontinued stock items, non-eco items where current brochure stock has changed to Eco, Bespoke or embroidered items cannot be returned or credited unless faulty.

• In the event that a customer has ordered garments in error, subject to prior approval, these may be sent back within 3 months of purchase, provided that they are in a saleable condition and, where applicable, in original packaging.

Returns will be subject to a 20% re-stocking fee, minimum charge of £25.00 applies. Unauthorised returns will be returned to the customer. Please note that no re-stocking approvals will be made between the months of July and September.

• All returns MUST have a note accompanying them stating the original sales order or invoice number.

• All returns will be credited at the invoiced price, minus any re-stocking fee.

• Returns will not be accepted back without an authorised returns’ number on the outside of the package/s.

• Any samples purchased can be returned within 6 months of invoice date, provided they are in a saleable condition and in their original packaging.
