Bantay Amianan

Quezon City, Philippines

Bantay Amianan is an alliance of Metro Manila based advocates calling for the protection of the natural resources of Northern Luzon (NL) against mining plunder. These efforts also include the preservation of the culture of the indigenous people of Cordillera and Ilocos, primarily the Igorots and the Ilokanos, who have been experiencing displacement, loss of livelihood, and human rights violation on a massive scale. Northern Luzon is of great importance being Metro Manila’s main food basket and watershed/river basin, hence the need to be defended. Launched on August 23, 2011 in Quezon City, Bantay Amianan aims to make more people aware of the plight of the NL people and the highly alarming environmental degradation going on as tragic results of 100 years of mining in the region. It contributes to NL Network against Destructive Large-Scale Mining which coordinates NL-wide campaigns and gathers support for the local struggles at the national and international levels.
