Bowery Boundaries

columbia university / gsapp / 2012 spring term studio: ‘identity crisis’, supervisor / phu hoang Program: mixed used, public, iconic institution, location: new york, us

The project’s idea is to extend the area of the park and the public part of the street in different directions. By this intervention, the block will be transformed into margin, which serves both qualities of adjacent territories. This will also allow using the in-between position of the block to create the place influential to both sides, the park and the street. [A]

The approach is based on the intention to redeline of existing boundaries in a city, to give up the notion of restrictedness and to uncover the dynamics of the boundaries by putting the existing identity into ‘crisis’. The city here determined as a function of future and existing internal and external borders. Some of those boundaries, such as transport, infrastructure and green zones, influence the identity of a place: others, such as rivers and other natural limits, determine its actual boundaries. Selected constraints are: Infrastructure, Environment, Time Management and Natural Disasters.
