A
bout two months ago, I had a conversation with an incredibly insightful young man. It was during a time when Hugh Masekela was on the island for the Grand Opening of the African Leadership University in Mauritius, and we were to be his audience in just two nights. But this particular evening, we met casually and started talking about art and the role it plays in our lives. And he said, “there is no way to fathom what a human being can do with art. It is almost like a piece of God…” The conversation went on and on for quite some time, and I was in awe of the depth he had about art. Truth be told, most people think art is overrated. They package art into general forms- those that our five senses can relate. From music that drives you to movies that thrill you, paintings that move you or even poems that soothe you. Now, this sounds like a stereotype, and it is not necessarily a bad thing. However, like Chimamanda cautions in her publication, ‘African Authenticity and the Biafran Experience,’ “the problem with stereotypes...is that one story can become the only story.” For May, we wish to kick off on an artsy note. Our feature, Pusumane, a poet whose works I absolutely love opens up her heart on art. We look at the Chinese history: what a (bad) poem can teach you about the Chinese language. And if you're thinking that life is unfair, think again and read our lifestyle article on how to follow your passion. Blast workout is back again to keep our bodies fresh for May and for the business aficionados; we feature three small and medium business owners who share their two cents on the ups and downs of small businesses

EDITOR’S NOTE Fast forward to the grand opening night. The ambiance was perfect. The old ruins of Balaclava stood as they have for the past Godknows-how-many-years were lit. The crystal marquee towered over us as we enjoyed the French cuisine and conversations with people from all over the globe. Hugh Masekela was on stage, in his yellow ups and blue downs. He filled the space and warmed our hearts with his strong vocals as the trumpet’s horn soothed the soul. He jammed to the music so seamlessly, and bust moves that any other 77-year-old would struggle. I experienced the bewitching magic of his music, good music. And I dare you to experience art this month. Because everyone has a ‘genre’ of art- that moves them, then art is universal. Because everyone genuinely enjoys the feels they get when they experience great art; then art is phenomenal. Because everyone can cry, laugh their behinds off, dance their feet, feast their eyes and enthrall their soul, then art is beyond carnal. Don’t treat art like a whatever thing, treat it like it's everything. In all earnest, I think art is a level of freedom that we all yearn. Find freedom. Happy reading.

A thin line betweenArt and Pamela Pusumane is savage, shining and prospering...

hails from Southern Africa, the beautiful land of Botswana. A true embodiment of poise and strength, a place where art and sound proliferate. A revelation of the male version of heroism that explicitly portrays the power of art. With a touch of charisma and a gutsy character, Pamela Pusumane spells fearlessness and courage to speak her mind without basking in the rays of her context.
Who is Pamela Pusumane? Honestly, that’s a tough question! I feel like you are taking me back to that C4I assignment.* Pamela Pusumane is loud and sips a lot of tea! I am a normal human being who sees every day as an opportunity to edit myself so that I can become better. I value honesty and loyalty. That’s why my poems are always so raw and blunt. I believe words speaks the loudest volumes.

My family and friends are a vital aspect of my life bcause I feel like those are the best kinds of relations. Wherever I am, I make it my mission to impact the people that I come across. I want them to remember me and not have to put me into a box. I am the girl that colours beyond the outlines set in any picture book I come across, and I don’t have to apologize for it.
“You’re the girl that colours beyond the outlines,” seemingly, you’re somewhat a daredevil, do you agree? I would agree. When I write my poems I don’t hold back; I write the truth as it is. Raw and authentic. I just think if a poem does not speak out then it’s just there for you but not the world. For me, that’s not how it should be. As artists, we should be able to evolve beyond our boundaries. As we push our boundaries, we also use our art to push those of people around us. Playing the daredevil route keeps your audience on their toes. They never know what to expect! When I get on stage, I have to own the stage. My audience knows that too! And I will have their undivided attention because I am about the “we” and make people question some aspects of life.

Most people would certainly agree that you’re a very opinionated person, and we’ve seen that expressed in your poems, what does that form of art mean to you?
23
| BANZA
24
Art is freedom. It’s acceptance in its purest form. I feel as though it’s the world that I can escape to and be free with my thoughts. For me, art is one thing that you can carry with you wherever you go. People break promises, people disappoint, you disappoint people, but art is there, forever. It’s my definition of paradise on earth. Art is like the silence that becomes so loud that you can’t ignore anymore. For me, art is the only thing that any other person cannot take away from you or taint. At any point in time, I know there can’t be another Pamela Pusumane or someone who can do my art the way I do it. I also know I can’t do art or say my poems the way any other poet does. Art is like fingerprints, we all have different ones. So I don’t spend time trying to be someone I am not. I just represent myself. My art. My identity. And everything falls into place. I feel people know me like that, the opinionated girl and trust me; I would rather be that. I believe a lot of people like to remain fluid so they could fit into boxes people put up for them. People like to hold back because there is a lot of judgement and criticism. I refuse to live my life that way; I like people knowing where I stand, what I value and who I am. My opinionated art is my masterpiece to the world, and I will continue to define what’s my definition of a masterpiece in every poem I write.
25
It seems to you that art goes beyond passion and is embedded within, how do you express the art in your heart and make it real and alive to the next person?
I tend to let go in every poem I write. I allow my audience to feel what I feel. For every poem that I write, I ensure that I bring it home to the everyday experiences of my audience. For example, I’m talking about pain; I paint the pain. I make it come alive. I personify it; I breathe life into it. It’s more like reliving the moment that inspired me to write the poem I am reciting then. In such moments, I feel like I can rewind time. I call it time travel with my emotions.
My opinionated art is my masterpiece to the world, and I will continue to define what’s my definition of a masterpiece in every poem I write.
What makes us human is our ability to feel intense emotions. I go out onto the stage, and I bring that out. I always value my everyday interactions with my community because I can see how people handle things and how emotions come into play. I know, I always tell people to “stop being emotional” but those are just jokes for the day.

Speaking of time travel, can you shed light on how you first fell in love with poetry? No biggie! Growing up, I was bullied through primary and high school. So I have always been the kid who fades into the background. I felt as though I did not matter. You know, I would go home after a long day of being beaten up by a few of my classmates, and when I get home, everyone is always so busy. You see, I come from an extended family, so every day is always chaotic and fastmoving. I always felt like I did not have an outlet to let it all out. That’s why I guess I stuck to my books; they hide everything so well. Long story short, I have always felt suffocated and voiceless. I think that’s why now, I speak in a louder tone and still today, in moments where I have to lower my voice, I find it hard to breathe! When I got to junior high school, I tried out debating. My first speech was less than 2 minutes! However, I realized that at the podium, I had 8 minutes to make a case. 8 minutes in which the world stopped. The world was silent then so that I could be louder. From there on, I worked hard at perfecting and improving on my debating skills. I did more speeches, went to competitions and lost way too many rounds, but I never gave up. In my lens of viewing life, I see the 8 minutes of my time to find the voice that I never had. That’s how I feel about art, more specifically poetry. In the 4-5 minutes I have on stage, It’s all about how I see the world, and I use words to change the world and take my audience on a ride of their lives.
29
So, how is Poetry a distinctive form of art that reveals your true expression? I think poetry gives me the stage to be myself and not even apologize for it. In my view, we grow up with so much judgement and too many bars set for us to meet. We have society telling us how to be, how to act. You know, you are not beautiful enough, you are not enough, you are fat. You are skinny. The point is, there is just always something that’s wrong with you. When I write my poems, my piece of paper tells me none of the above. Pen and paper do not try to mould me into something I am not. They allow me to breathe. To think. To be me. Every day you have a piece of paper and pen that would not judge you, they don’t say anything. I am the one that gets to dictate and pour my heart onto paper. The best part is when I know that I don’t have to compare myself to anyone.
Are the poems related to personal experiences? I always ensure that I leave a piece of me in every poem I write. The piece becomes strong and emancipates whatever crisis I may be facing. For me, poetry is my platform to vent and space where I can scream however loud I want and feel satisfied on my crisis.
| BANZA
I also talk about issues facing our societies: I speak of culture and how sometimes it breaks us or makes us, I talk about stereotypes and anything that goes at the moment.
Any last words? I would encourage everyone to be themselves. I always feel sad when someone says “I can’t be good as you or that person.” It pisses me off because everyone has their story to tell, we have all have something unique to offer the world. So I often ask myself, why burden ourselves by trying to be someone we are not? If there is one thing, I view as, a heavier burden, its regret. It will crush you from within and one day in your death bed or when time has slipped through your hands: one individual would be like ‘I wish I had done this.’ Decide not to live your life on what if and if ’s could have happened. And lastly, wake up every day and let yourself SHINE!
Just allow yourself to prosper!

The Guy Bomber jackets are a classic piece that can easily go with many different outfits, and won’t look out of place as they are one of the most versatile pieces. Choose a brown or black leather bomber jacket to go over the top. Pull it off with this oversized zipper detailed t-shirt. Black, navy, tan or gray whichever you prefer and looks best on you. Match it up with some skinny ripped jeans, choosing a darker colour if you want to make more of an impact. A clean pair of brown sneakers tips the cool look in your favour. Most importantly, don't overthink this look. Just give it a more simple, less layered combination. Just wear your favorite t-shirt, best fitting jeans and the coolest pair of sneakers you have. The jacket simply seals the deal as it helps in balancing out the look, giving it a more put-together vibe. The varying tones and textures offer the right juxtaposition that aid in pulling this look off to perfection.
The Chic For a super flattering foundation for your looks, these light wash denim shorts are a style saviour. Featuring a high waisted fit, five pocket detail and zip fly with a single-button, the shorts can be worn with any colourful top from sleeveless to crop tops or even a matching denim. Team it up with a black chiffon Kimono to accentuate the top. Accessorize with long round silver earrings and a matching silver ring connected to the bracelet. Finally, a pair of leopard print heels with spikes on the back should serve as a perfect match. For the soft pink eyeshadow look Go for a not too bright pink that draws attention away from the outfit. It should just be bright enough to make your eyes pop, with a little black in the outer corners for that extra fierceness. Match it with a gentle ombre lip which not only makes your lips poutier but also draws attention to them. This is a delicate everyday look that can be pulled off for any event.

Striped skirt One item that is very versatile and can be worn in any season with some adjustments is a striped maxi skirt. Though, striped skirts can be difficult to style because, at first glance, they don’t seem like they go with everything. The secret is? They kind of do.
The skirts are so comfy, and they fit all body shapes and all styles. The best thing about these skirts for the plus size lady is that it gives her a slimmer look especially if the stripe came in a horizontal way. And for the slim lady, she can wear the striped maxi skirt in a vertical way to give her a curvier look.
This striped maxi skirt designed in a stretch cotton fabric is a versatile style that will cover many occasions. It is made with a comfy waistband. Its style is cut with gathers to the waistband creating a flowing skirt that will skim over the hips and create an elongated shape. Finished with two side pockets, this skirt drapes beautifully to a calf-length finish.
Pair a striped full skirt with a colorful top like this one. The purple and white striped skirt blends in well with the pink top. This simple and chic solid color top features a round neckline, layered design and slit detail front. The features make the top elegant, classy and different to have.
The pop of super bright colour tucked in the skirt gives it a sophisticated look.Accessorize with long purple earrings to match the skirt. Complete the look by adding a touch of brightly colored heels of your choice to give it an artistic vibe. The ankle-cuff block heels are a perfect combination.
43
Loose and relaxed, these t-shirts subtly stand out against the popular slim-fit t-shirts while simultaneously keeping you cool and artistic. The outfit offers a fresh and unique alternative to the classic crew necks we often rely on as they come in different designs, for instance, the zipper detail which gives them a trendy touch.
Keep it simple and classic. Opt for an oversized t-shirt in timeless black, grey or white and combine with slim or skinny cut jeans, chinos or shorts. An oversized t-shirt makes a statement on its own, especially when you juxtapose it against a fitted bottom half, so there is no need to go overboard. If you are a size small, try a medium or even a large to get your desired look.
Another easier way to style it. Keep it untucked and layered under a classic bomber jacket. Combine with ripped jeans for a considered hi-lo contrast to create a statement-making casual ensemble that is effortlessly easy to put together and pull off. You could even throw on a sweatshirt or a crew neck jumper for added warmth if required. Just remember to keep the t-shirt hem peeking out at the bottom to give this timeless look a contemporary twist.
Accessories are key A white face, black leather strap timepiece is an excellent way to complete the look. Team it up with beaded black bracelets to compliment the timepiece.

African printed pants are a huge trend as they can be dressed up or down and make your look a little bit more unique. You'll want to wear these African print pants over and over again. The pants are cut for a unisex fit that is slightly oversized for her, and a comfortable, relaxed fit for him. These African prints feature a bold wax print and an elastic and drawstring waistband for a fit that will adjust to your body no matter what the season.
To balance out a very busy print like this one, you can always pair it with a solid neutral. The plain black fitting t-shirt is a perfect match. Accessorize with beaded matching bracelets on the hands and neck. For stud lovers, go for black stud earrings to compliment the outfit. They are a popular choice for guys looking for a single stud that will look like a plug but fits a standard ear piercing.

Black lace speaks sensual, classy, chic, mysterious, sexy, and stunning. These lace dresses are beautiful and feminine. Do not crowd the complexity of lace with fussy accessories – keep them to a minimum. The pink feather earring steals the show as its quite versatile. One can always opt to wear a pair of feather earrings, but try something unique by just wearing one feather earring and a small stud earring in the other ear. Choose heels for elegance and symmetry, or be more shouty with blockheeled ankle boots beneath. Team the dress with neutral accessories as the lace design speaks it all.
For the makeup, neutral pink lips work best with curled dark lashes. The emphasis should be on the eyes, and all other elements intentionally left minimal or downplayed.
The bright blue eyes with the black lace dress draws attention to the pop of colour from the double sole blue heels. A great look for any little black dress with any pop of colour.
This combination screams bold and sexy, as it manifests an earthshaking gorgeous look.

Serigne Fall What I love about my traditional Senegalese attire is that it's very comfortable to wear and an easy style to pull out.
I looked up to my grandmother who was a tailor and would sew all my traditional attires. This made me fall in love with African prints.
I incorporate beaded accessories in the form of necklaces and bracelets to compliment my attire.
I define my fashion as being calm, cool and collected.

What I love about fashion is that I live and breathe it. Everything I do somehow ties into a fashionable aesthetic.
I incorporate
I looked up to my mom. I would see pictures of her from when she was younger in the 90s and think to myself, “I want to look and dress like that. It’s so cool”. She had a somewhat lazy relaxed sense of style, and I looked up to becoming that cool.
a lot of old school, grunge fashion and cute pastels. A lot of my clothes come from thrift shops because I get actual old school clothes from there.
I feel that my style has made me a lot of “whatever-theweather” kind of friend. Because I’m so weird, only people who actually accept what I look like for what it is accept me as friends.
I define my fashion as who I am. I dress to stand out, so people can see me from afar and identify me even without seeing my face.

AR TS &
BUSINESS A Powerful Pair
Maatla Kgasa
Before breaking down the relationship between arts and businesses, it’s logical and perhaps fitting to note that art on its own is a business, generating huge profits. The comparison of arts and business yields one main lesson: entrepreneurs start by looking for a market or determining what the market needs then create a product customised and tailor made to the identified needs. On the other hand, artists take an entirely different and opposite direction. They start by creating a product (painting, drawing, film, song, etc.) and then look for a market to sell it. Such an approach deviates from the natural approach followed by businesses. Over the years, we have seen the evolution of businesses and the continual creation of mutual beneficial synergies or partnerships between artists and corporates to push brands and ultimately goods or services to consumers.
| BANZA
58
| BANZA
Art is an expression which manifests a way of life. It can take the form of music, drawing, sports or painting. As these different forms grow and attract fans and avid followers, companies or business see this as a window of opportunity to tap into these fan bases and expand their market shares. And this is quite visible in all arts and business fields. Art has managed to strengthen business in an incredible way: stimulating sales and increasing company revenue. A big takeaway: there is always a market for everything and such avenues should be explored. Secondly, artists have proven that market research is not always a must-do if you trust your product and your ability to deliver it to consumers. It’s quite handy to note that that consumers’ needs are always changing, and market research only captures the needs of a particular people and hence results might not be representative of the whole population. It’s always about the product ladies and gentlemen.
We have seen sponsorship deals in football and basketball that have made such sports billion dollar franchises since they have a huge following. What is your artistry? What are you good at? And how are you merging your artistry with entrepreneurship? Entrepreneurship has no limits. Today, YouTube, the world’s largest video sharing site, creates no videos or content. Airbnb, the biggest hotel franchise in the world, owns no real estate. Uber`is the largest taxi company, but it owns no cab. Do you see where the future is heading? Let’s join it. Take care, take heed.
B
Whatever you create, make sure it’s of the best quality and most appealing to consumers. Some of the world’s biggest artists such as Barbados-born American singer Rihanna, football maestro Christiano Ronaldo, and Canadian-American Rapper Drake have used their artistry to seal multi-million dollar endorsement deals with companies like Apple, Puma, Nike, Samsung, and Jordan. As an artist in any industry, you have value and the ability to impact those who follow you and your craft. Your fan base is a gold mine for businesses to tap into and influence consumers’ buying or spending habits. BUSINESS
How to BRAND yourself Mohamed Maalainine
| BANZA
60
Know thyself
A
s a young or aspiring entrepreneur, your have faced and will face many rejections. You probably doubted yourself and your skills. But did you know that most of the times the rejections had nothing to do with your capabilities but had everything to do with your credibility?
Many entrepreneurs lack personal branding which results in failure. They forget that people would rather interact with people than corporate brands. Fear not; you don’t need to be a marketing expert to brand yourself. All that you need is to keep reading this article.
The first step in creating a personal brand for people to know is to know yourself. Although many individuals are tempted to skip this part, you shouldn’t. Personal branding is about real assets and qualifications that you have. Unravel these assets with a high level of awareness. As a starter, you can look to what your entourage think of you and how you think of yourself. Then, do your SWOT* analysis joined with intensive introspections and after that, take the time to reflect deeply on where you are and where you want to be. Ask yourself the right questions. Look into anything that distinguishes you from others. If nothing is unique about you, that’s unique itself. Brand it.
Be the expert If being an expert does not make you credible, I don’t know what does. The best way to be an expert is to align your domain of expertise with your passion. Like Mark Manson says, find what you love and let it kill you! Be so passionate about an industry that you will end up being the magnet. The magnet that attracts everyone around you, the go-to person. Educate yourself about that industry, talk about it and live it in your daily life. Go even further and breathe it, make it your oxygen. Once you are an expert, whether people like you or not they will eventually come to you (true story). However, avoid having a mismatch
BUSINESS
between your personal brand and your business. If you own a pharmaceutical company, it’s probably not wise to brand yourself as a graphic design expert, just saying.
Communicate or communicate You don’t have much of a choice here, either you communicate, or you communicate. Communication is the core of any personal branding. The moment you stop connecting with your customers, your network or your fans, if any, is the moment you lost your brand. We all know stars and idols who vanish for a long time then come back all happy, thinking people are waiting for them to find out that they were already forgotten and mostly replaced. Nowadays, with the influence of bestsellers book like “Start with Why”, consumers are interested not only in the business itself but why you started it, its missions and your vision for it. Be ready to communicate all these aspects and more.
Tell your story Last year, in Fredonia, a young entrepreneur asked his mentor: How can I get investors’ full attention? The mentor smiled and replied: Tell your story. Then, the now confused mentee asked again: How can I get customers’ loyalty? The mentor promptly answered: Tell your story! Did you see what I did there?! Stories convey more meaningful messages. They are sturdy and easy to remember. In fact, story-telling existed since the ancient times that our minds became prepared to absorb them. Use them abundantly; you will thank me later. B

Ups Downs
The
and
small of business by Kabo Madigele
From a tiny Island in the heart of the Indian Ocean comes very inspiring stories of three small business owners. One may immediately conclude that business for them is a smooth sail, mainly because Mauritius tops the ease of doing business index in Africa, it is the least corrupt, most peaceful, and second happiest country in Africa and ranks first in much other governance and economic indicators. Despite this supposedly healthy macroeconomic landscape, the journeys of these small business owners are not devoid of hurdles. They are continually battling it out. Here are their accounts of how they successfully navigate this maze. BUSINESS
Louis Ramsahye 7/10 Mini Market and Casa Budha Louis was born in Pointe Piments, to a destitute family. “Life was difficult. So I used to buy fruits after school from the market and sell them to tourists at the beach. I was introduced to this business by a friend. I loved it, and I worked full time after finishing high school.’’ It is amazing how he spent two decades doing this, because, for many of us, it may be boring to spend a long time in one endeavour.
“I love the connection I make with people from all over the world. I learn a lot from them. Through this, I have made friends and visited some of them several times in Germany and Switzerland.” It was in 2000 that he got the opportunity to scale up his enterprise. “I secured a place at Meridien Hotel. It was a jackpot because the location was the hub of tourists, who formed the core of my customer base. I employed a salesperson there and continued selling at the beach.Right now, I have two permanent employees, working in two branches.”
“I opened another business in May last year: 7/10 Mini Market. It sells snacks, fruits, vegetables, beverages and a wide range of consumer goods. It is uniquely positioned near the beach which has high tourist volumes. One other competitive advantage is that we open seven days a week, so we cater to our customers’ needs even on public holidays when most shops are closed.”
‘’I encounter many challenges, the most prominent being the seasonality of our business. It has highs and lows, depending on tourist traffic. But all in all, business is good and above all, I am happy.’’

Linlay Pierre Pierre Noodles Born 50 years ago in Trou Aux Biches, Linlay grew up just like any other Mauritian boy: swimming in the ocean and fishing with his friends. “I had only one passion, soccer. My dream was to be a professional soccer player and go abroad. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen. I sustained a terrible injury while on training for my national team debut in Kampala, Uganda. I was never to play again.” But life had to go on. “I worked for a handicraft shop in Caudan Waterfront in Port Louis. I started from the bottom as a security guard and rose up to become a salesperson. I stayed there for 17 years until the shop closed.’’
Things become tough; Linlay decided to help his father, who was by then selling food on the streets of Trou Aux Biches. “We were able to upgrade the business, from a trolley that we used to move from home every morning and back in the afternoon, to a permanent stall that we have now. My whole family is sustained by this business, and that in itself is fulfilling.”
“I love what I do because every day I get to interact with different people from diverse cultures. But it is not easy. I have to wake up at 5 am every morning, six days a week, to buy all supplies needed for the day.’’
Despite these challenges, he is always pushed to work harder by his three children. “I want the best for them. I don’t want them to end up doing the same thing I am doing because it is really hard. I want them to get the best education because it is only through it that they can survive hardships in life.’’ “But that is life. I am content with what I have.”

John-Pierre was born and raised in Beau Bassin, where he also attended all his schools. Growing up, he had only one thing in mind: to work on cruise ships and travel to other countries. As things don’t always go as planned, he went on to work in retail stores instead. “After some time, I joined bigger companies. I worked as a corporate sales representative in Emtel, the mobile telecommunications company. I left after three years to work on a more challenging project in Madagascar. Madacom wanted to increase its subscriber base, so I was tasked with building a team of 12 people to work in sales and marketing in the corporate sales department. Following Madacom’s success, I came back home after two years to establish a water sports business. It didn’t do well as I had to recruit skippers, who were not loyal to the business most of the time.” He closed the business and began to hunt for a job. “I landed in Saga Holidays, a travel company which plans holidays tours for people over 50 years of age. I went to Kent, England where I underwent rigorous training on customer service. Back in Mauritius, I had to ensure that the clients had the best holiday experience, meaning, I had to stay full time at the hotels to respond to queries in time.’’ In 2008, John-Pierre, always on the move, joined a fish processing company in

charge of operations, marketing and sales. Due to a series of disappointments, he decided to resign. “After eight months sitting at home without work, I told myself: It is better I do something on my own.” “I sold my car and supplemented the money I made with a bank loan to build At-Mau-Sphere. I buy and sell branded clothes straight from factories, allowing me to sell at good prices, more especially because my shop is located in a village, where most people can’t afford high prices. This also leads to fast sales, as I sell more within a short time instead of waiting for only one customer to buy one item at a high price.’’ Challenges are inherent in any business, regardless of its size. ‘’ Diversifying my product offering is not as easy as one may think. To achieve that, I have to invest heavily in installing additional fixtures such as cabinets in the shop, which is costly. Also, none of my suppliers is willing to offer credit facilities.’’ John-Pierre plans to launch another business in which he will organise boat trips for tourists who want to engage in fun activities such as fishing and snorkelling. “I will use the same space I have to promote this business. I have satisfied all the necessary legal requirements like applying for a boat operator license. I don’t want to put my eggs in one basket. It is risky to depend on one thing.’’ “I am happy as my own boss, and I am crafting my own path.’’

ost people don’t realize that the Chinese writing system is the most significant reason why China is a continuous civilization for almost 5000 years. Although this is a statement an educated Chinese would like to make; it’s a lie with good though uneducated intention. What has been continuous is not civilization – Chinese civilizations (plural) have been diverse enough to be successful on diversity ground alone – but rather it is a single writing system – hanzi 汉字:

Chinese characters – that has sustained for more than 2000 years, lasting from 3rd century BC until this very day. First Emperor of Qin, the founder of the Qin dynasty, introduced several reforms: currency, weights and measures were standardized, and a uniform system of writing Chinese characters was established. Ever since then, Qin’s writing system had functioned as the culture’s superglue that held and holds together the vastly different people speaking very different languages. (Qin emperor was also the initiator of the famed defense project known to us as the Great Wall.)

“Effectively implement the Latin movement, the more widespread, the better!”
But then, what is Pinyin or Hanyu Pinyin 汉语拼音? Pinyin is the Romanized form of Chinese characters. The Hanyu Pinyin system was developed in the 1950s based on earlier forms of Romanization that go back to the end of the 16th century when the first Italian Jesuits arrived in China. The official Pinyin system was published by the Chinese government in 1958 and revised several times. Still controversial to this day, Hanyu Pinyin has nevertheless been successful.
Pinyin without tone marks is often used in foreign publications to spell Chinese names and may be utilized as an input method to enter Chinese characters into computers. Few of us know that Romanization has been one of Modern China’s dreams. It started when the prominent leader of the New Culture Movement (1910’s-1920’s) Lu Xun exclaimed: “If Chinese characters aren’t abolished, China will undoubtedly fail.” This Latin movement blossomed less than one hundred years ago. wing taste, and in January 1941 Chairman Mao wrote famously: “Effectively implement the Latin movement, the more widespread, the better!” The full weight of Chairman’s inscription has kept its deep impact on the mind of the Chinese intelligentsia until in the 1980’s, the era of Reform and Openness. The poem I present below may give an explanation why Romanization could better stay an idea:
Traditional Chinese 《
He saw those ten lions, and using his trusty arrows, caused the ten lions to die. He brought the corpses of the ten lions to the stone den. The stone den was damp. He asked his servants to wipe it. After the stone den was wiped, he tried to eat those ten lions. When he ate, he realized that these ten lions were in fact ten stone lion corpses. Try to explain this matter.
...sporty Chinese netizens avoid the state censorship: by substituting the censored character with another of the same sound.
Translation « Lion-Eating Poet in the Stone Den » In a stone den was a poet with the family name Shi, who was a lion addict, and had resolved to eat ten lions. He often went to the market to look for lions. At ten o’clock, ten lions had just arrived at the market. At that time, Shi had just arrived at the market.

Shí shí, shǐ shí shì shí shī shī, shí shí shí shī shī. Shì shì shì shì.
So it is quite clear that there are more characters than there are pronunciations. And this is exactly how sporty Chinese netizens avoid the state censorship: by substituting the censored character with another of the same sound, and if you play it well, this language game often adds a flavour of irony. And this, I believe, is one of the enchantments of the ancient characters: you can lose yourself in the great haze and have irresponsible fun!

That in this era of realism, dreams serve the sole purpose of glittery fairy tales we tell our children until they reach puberty and then we shove a spatula and a job application in their hand while cynically smirking, “Life’s not fair, deal with it.” Well, I reject that notion. Here’s why.

2. There is ALWAYS a Market The article herein(along with countless others spanning the internet) lists one question as the one you should be asking when pursuing your dream job: “Will people pay me for it?”
People need doctors. People need accountants. Supply and demand; it makes perfect sense.
But that’s not the right question. Instead, what you should be asking yourself is, “How can I prove to people my work is worth paying for?”
Art is seen as a “want,” which means that people have a harder time understanding the market for it unless they are a part of that particular target audience. Someone that would never consider buying a piece of art for $1,000 will have a very hard time reasoning how anyone else could make a living selling art for $1,000.
I’ll explain. Here’s a line I’m sure we’ve all heard many times: “Well maybe you should still get an accounting degree or something. You know… just in case.” Ah, yes. If I had a nickel for every time I’ve heard someone give me “just in case” advice to prepare myself for inevitable failure… well, let’s just say I’d own an impressive collection of jet skis by now. See, you never hear people tell accountants to get another degree, “just in case.” No one ever says med school students that maybe they should learn welding, or construction, or some other trade skill so when this whole “being a doctor” phase wears off they’ll at least have something to “fall back on”.
The fact is, people only pay for things they either want or need, and when your passion falls into a field that meets an obvious market need, following it is completely acceptable.

Art, on the other hand…
But there surely can’t be a market for everything… Yeah, there pretty much always is. You can make money doing virtually anything nowadays, provided you market it correctly. Ever heard of the NYC Naked Cowboy? He plays guitar and sings songs in his underwear and a cowboy hat. And now he’s sponsored by Fruit of the Loom and has a net worth of over 2.5 million dollars. …Imagine that! The point is, whether the market exists or not isn’t the problem – it’s real, and it’s there. Reaching it is the issue. So develop a strategy – figure out what you have to offer and how you’re going to get it out there. Who is your target audience? What value are you offering them? How do you explain to them that what you’re selling is going to benefit their lives in some measurable way?

A case for music Fanidh Senanta
I don’t even know which is most disturbing, the fact that I am sitting in the loo, typing this article at 3 am, or the fact that President Mugabe spent $800,000 for his birthday in an area where 75% of staple maize crop failed. That’s neither here nor there. My grandfather, Bob Marley, you might have heard of him or heard his songs, especially if you are a lover of natural herbs. Yes! That guy, he always said: “One good thing about music is, when it hits you, you feel no pain.” I realized this was a lie after falling from the stairs in my school because I was too overwhelmed with the music I was listening to.
OK
, I just made that story up, and I am not even sure why I’m talking about this quote. But, about a year ago, I discovered that it is important to listen to music that matches one’s personal values and identity. It’s probably something some of us know but are not conscious entirely. It all started when I made acquaintances with Afrocentric music. Ever since I feel like some things in my life have been unblocked, and everything is in line now. I believe this is because all that I preached and stood for was contrary to the music that I listened. In my case, I claimed to believe in Afrocentrism, but never listened to any African music. Not that there is anything wrong with non-African-music, but the thing is, it was a type of art that was conflicting my belief. It was like claiming to be a feminist, but constantly listening to artists that objectify women in their songs. Music plays a huge role in our lives. It motivates us when we are sad, and it soothes our nerves when we are feeling nervous. Music enhances our creativity and caresses our whole body when we feel lonely. Music has so much power that I would end up writing a book if I have to talk about how important it can be.
preferences may depend on the type of individuals we are. Moreover, every song carries a message that may influence the listener to some extent, in a good or in a bad way. Thus, listening to any music with any lyrics may cause one’s personal values to conflict with the music consumed if those two are not in line. Some subconscious confusion is created here. On the other hand, listening to the kind of music that connects with one’s goals and values helps keep focus because it constantly reminds us of who we are and of who we want to be. It goes the same way with any other type of art we consume.
However, some of us may argue that the kind of music we listen to has no influence on us and that it is purely for entertainment sake. Fair enough, but we have to remember that music is the most powerful form of sound that affects our emotional state. Although the influence it has on each of us may vary, it is still existent. To prove this point, Cheikh Anta Diop in the African version of Einstein claims that; a person who regularly listens to rap music is more likely to use profane language as opposed to a person who only listens to classical music. Before putting your earphones on, ask yourself, is the art I consume in line with the person I want to be? If the answer is no, I guess today is a great day to change your playlist. B
Music is an art that we all need. In as much as we all love music, we all have our different preferences, and those LIFESTYLE

Eat an Artwork Everyday Torey Foss
T
here is art in everything we do in life- our bodies included. Therefore, everything we put into them should embody and enhance it. There is a reason that we find a colorful plate of food beautiful. The vibrant colors we see in a healthy meal draws us in. Every color naturally occurring in food gives us a different nutrient and vitamin- called phytochemicals, which inherently bring us to that which our bodies need and crave. According to Susan KasikMiller, MS, RD, CNSC, a clinical dietitian at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire, Wis, “Plant products are sources of phytochemicals of which there are thousands that have been identified.” The Produce for Better Health Foundation (PBH) explains further that multiple phytochemicals can be found in any one plant, and these are essential for purposes such as protection and regeneration of the body, as well as acting as antioxidants. Every time you sit down to eat, the colors on your plate should jump out at you, and when you make a list of all the foods that you have consumed in a day, it should form a rainbow- filling your body with all the nutrients and nourishment it needs. Unfortunately, for many people, this is far from the norm. The average meal consumed by humans nowadays is predominantly beige or made up of artificial coloring, which, according to Susan Bowerman, MS, RD, CSSD, Co-author of What Color Is Your Diet? is as a result of food preferences being based on cost, taste, and level of convenience. However, a diet which is predominantly ‘beige/brown” or filled with unnatural colorants will leave your body significantly at a loss of the nutrients it needs to function optimally, and will, therefore, have long-term negative repercussions. How can we ensure that we are getting these nutrients in our bodies every day? By creating an artwork and counting colors. Juliann Schaeffer, in Today’s Dietician, divided the food groups into the colors Blue/Purple, Green, Yellow/Green, Yellow/Orange, and Red.
Purple/Blue: nutrient contentpredominantly anthocyanin. This color group is particularly important for helping prevent heart disease through its ability to reduce the risk of blood clots, says Gloria Tsang, RD, editor-in-chief of HealthCastle.com. Types of foods that you could use for this are blueberries, plums/ prunes, black grapes/raisins, aubergine, and blackberries. These foods are perfect for snacking on to get your blue’s off the day!
Green: predominantly chlorophyll. This pigment found in green plants breaks down carcinogenic compounds through inducing enzyme production in the liver, according to the PBH. Types of foods that you could eat to give you these vital nutrients are broccoli, zucchini, Brussels sprouts, or cabbage. They are also a great source of fiber and are good to pair with a sit-down meal.
HEALTH
Yellow/Green: predominant nutrient- lutein Lutein targets particularly eye health and the degeneration that can occur in the eyes from age. Lutein is also paired with high levels of vitamin C, which aid in boosting one’s immune system. Foods which will give you these nutrients are kiwi fruit, pistachio nuts, green melon, spinach, and avocado. Avocado and Pistachio nuts have the added benefit of being a very healthy oil as well, and will help to sustain your energy levels throughout the day- as well as to contribute to your omega-3 intake.
Red: Predominant nutrient, Lycopene. Foods in shades of red have multiple benefits for the body such as providing tannins which reduce the risk of bacteria staying in the body, vitamin C, and lycopene- a strong antioxidant. The PBH mentions that cooking red foods such as tomatoes increases the body’s ability to absorb the nutrients and is, in fact, more beneficial to the body in this form. Foods which contain these wonderful benefits are things such as tomatoes, beetroot, watermelon, raspberries, guavas, and grapefruit. This food group is arguably the tastiest- so these can often be used as a delicious treat as a healthier replacement for dessert.
Yellow/Orange: predominant nutrient, Vitamin A, and Vitamin C. These are both antioxidants, as well as helping with vision. The PBH also notes that this food group is a large contributor to skin and bone health, making it crucial in warding off diseases such as osteoporosis. To get your daily intake of these nutrients, you should be adding foods such as carrots, pumpkin/butternut, mangos, oranges, and sweetcorn into your daily diet. Not only do these foods help with your vision, but they also enhance the appearance of any plate by adding their bright, beautiful color!
To ensure that you are getting all the nutrients your body needs in a day, start counting colors. Liven up your day by picking foods to eat from each of the groups above and put together delicious, nutritious combinations. What artwork of food will you be feeding your body today?

One of the main benefits of purple/blue foods is that they are great for preventing heart disease and blood clots. While exercising, an excellent way to achieve this same benefit is to do cardio. There are many different forms of cardio, and for this exercise group, you can choose whichever you like. A fast and efficient manner to get a good cardio workout, however, is through skipping.
Just as green plants help to protect your organs from carcinogenic compounds, exercise can also contribute to protecting and strengthening your organs. Stress, unhealthy lifestyle habits, and loss of muscle mass can cause excess fat to form around one's organs. This is called visceral fat and is very dangerous for the body as it results in excess pressure on the organs, as well as preventing nutrients from being absorbed into them. Yellow/Green Yellow/green foods allow us to see things more clearly as we age. One aspect of the body that also deteriorates with age is muscle massand this can be seen very clearly in arm strength. To counter this- it is important to keep up your arm strength with basic exercises such as the Superman push-up. Begin with your arms extended in front of you, lying on your stomach. Bring you arms around your body and place your hands just below your shoulders under your chest. Push up from your chest until you reach a straight arm plank position, hold for two counts and lower back down to starting position. Easier: Keep your knees on the ground while doing the exercise- it is important however to still keep your body in a straight line. Difficult: Extend alternating legs behind you while doing the movement- this will also engage your core more actively.
93
Yellow/Orange Foods of this color help the body with vision, as well as with skin and bone health. According to Wolf ’s Law- bone grows at sites of friction. Therefore, to strengthen our bones, we have to stress them slightly through exercises that provide small amounts of impact to them. This can be achieved, amongst other things, through running and jumping. These exercises can be performed to improve bone strength, however, to also utilise the benefits of vision which we received from our food, we will do step ups. This exercise allows for small impact on bones f

Red Red foods- the treat at the end of a meal, and excellent antioxidants. The exercise paired with this food group needs to make you sweat a lot- as this is one of the bodies ways of removing toxins, and also needs to be a real ‘last blast’ at the end of a workout. The only exercise which could sufficiently do this is everyone’s favorite; the Burpee!

SPORTS
Few months separate us from the big event that we all have been waiting. We have all crossed our fingers and have talked about it without ceasing. Well, with this August, every craving for the Olympic games will be satisfied, and everyone will witness the great competition that will take place. Meanwhile, many athletes are training hard, many are getting prepared, and many are in qualification competitions in the hopes of getting a ticket to Rio. But to do so, athletes must have robust interactive and interchanging relationships. After all, coaches are the athletes’ guide in their pursuit of high achievement and excellence. Before drawing this conclusion, I had immersed in the wonderland of endless questioning and only my career as a swimmer has helped me get a gratifying answer. I want you, for this reason, to think about how an athlete can improve with a coach and about the impact of the coach on his or her performance. YOU WILL BE AMAZED. Together in this article, we will dive into the details of the athlete-coach relationship. Recent research has proved that coaches have a significant impact on the athlete‘s experience and career. They are an influential element of the competitive experience. As we all know, coaches are there to help the athletes improve their skills, develop a strong character and gain confidence. They are also responsible for pushing the psychological, emotional and physical limits of the athletes.
According to David Benzel, there are three kinds of young coaches:
The Great Coach Dedicated to making a positive impact on the athletic and life journey of a young athlete. The great coach is committed to making a change in the lives of young men by building champions, not championships. He/she can lead a young athlete to bigger and better things in sports and life.
The Good Coach Dedicated to making a positive impact on the athletic journey of a young athlete. The good coach lacks the 360-degree view that the great coach has for each child. Being a great athlete isn’t just about a child’s athletic ability, it’s also about their attitude. The great coach helps guide young athletes toward becoming well-rounded individuals while the good coach’s goal is to win championships and give athletes the skills and experience necessary to play at the next level. In this context, sports, not the life journey, is the center of the universe.
97
The Ego Coach Deceptively hides his/her motive to satisfy whatever selfish needs must be met to feel fulfilled – intellectually, emotionally, or physically. He/she will often project high and lofty goals for those in his charge, but witnesses will notice the lack of real effort or commitment to achieving those goals because they are not the real goals. This coach will deceive himself and others to satisfy the ego. Self is the center of the universe. The nature of sports coaching implies an achievement situation, where the performance of both coach and athlete is evaluated. Thus, people are often inclined to evaluate a given coach–athlete relationship as either successful or unsuccessful and efficient or ineffective. Successful relationships are those that have unambiguously reached a level of normative performance success where both the athlete and the coach are happy and share the same goals and mindset.
| BANZA
However, we can sometimes find successful relationships without being effective, and here, both the athlete and the coach can run a risk of breaching ethical and professional issues associated with codes of conduct and formulated to protect coaches and athletes. On the other hand, broken relationships are the ones with negative outcomes regarding performances, but at the same time, effective by invariably having some positive results for the athletes with regards to psychological health and wellbeing. In conclusion, the coachathlete relationship is essential to the success of both sides. As Ara Parasheghian says, “a good coach will make his players see what they can be rather than what they are.” B

A letter from uncle Charles Charles Msilanga In our lives today, everyone has got something special in their hearts that the world needs. Everyone has got a passion for doing something great in their hearts which can lead them to greatness! The question is this; is everyone living their passion or dreams in life? Absolutely not! A lot of people in the world today are satill procrastinating on their dreams, their passions and what fulfillment they want their hearts to have. However, I think that is not the way we need to live life. God has given us the gift of life, and we give back to him as a gift what we do with our lives. I am very sure that every individual has something deep in their hearts to give to society and the world as a whole but has not yet done so, because of some excuses of not having this or that. I agree with Jon Bon Jovi, who stated, “Nothing is as important as passion. No matter what you want to do with your life, be passionate.” Benjamin Franklin also said, “If passion drives you, let reasons hold the reins.”

Passionate Living I believe everyone has that still voice which is deep in our hearts reminding us that we should be doing something so as to enhance transformation in the world and explore particular aspects of life for this generation. That is called passion. If you have realized and started living passionately on the things you love doing, and you are passionate about, thumbs up for you. However, if you are still hesitant and have not yet started to awaken your passion fully in doing something and you feel you need to start doing something about it immediately, then these three tips are for you;
1)Be Fearless When it comes to living our passion and dreams, a lot of us are afraid of the unknown. Fear makes us think that something negative will happen when the truth is we do not know what will happen. At this point, apply courage by following your instincts and start to undertake the particular thing with which you are passionate. Do not worry, just be fearless, do your best and you will be very surprised when God does the rest.
3)Seek Guidance. First, seek guidance from God. Take some time to pray to God and ask him to help you live out your destiny. Miracles from the Almighty do happen. Second, seek guidance from mentors, because they too, play a role in helping you arrive at your future. Mentors want the best in us and for us, and therefore, a good mentor will surely guide you well and show you the correct paths to take for you to achieve passionate living. In you lies answers to particular questions the world needs addressed and your passion may be just what the world awaits. Be a gift to the world and find out what you are passionate about and start living passionately! I wish you all the best. May God Bless you so much. Charles Msilanga.
