FROM THE EDITOR
The Gift of Love Last month we were surrounded by candy hearts and roses and why not, Love is the ultimate emotion and most of us want to be in it. Did you know that it is available to you whenever you want it. Maybe not in the form of romantic love, but pure love none the less.
We are like a garden the more you are watered with love the more you grow. Simply put, whatever you put in your mind becomes bigger. During this season of love, practice self love.
The five basic requirements we need for balance are:
Proper Exercise, yoga acts as a lubricant for the body keeping joints, muscles, and other parts of the body functioning properly by increasing circulation and flexibility.
Proper breathing, when stressed the breath becomes more shallow, take deep breaths several times daily.
Proper relaxation, when the body and mind are continually overworked their efficiency diminishes. Relaxation is natures way of recharging the body.
Proper diet, you are either contributing to your health each day by the food choices you make or taking away from it.
Positive thinking and meditation, dedicate yourself to watching your thoughts and always creating healthy positive self talk. Nothing is more important to your health and success in life.
Approach life with mindfulness and reverence. Learn a couple of super healthy base recipes, then you can swap out the ingredients for variety. Stay away from processed foods and artificial sweeteners. Cooking for yourself you have control over the ingredients as opposed to eating out and it can be fun.
Give yourself the gift of self love this month. Need help, The “Cookin Yogi” can be your personal coach or entertain your guests with either hands-on classes or demonstrations. Whatever you do make it feel good, keeping most meals clean and healthy but always allow for the occasional splurge. Life is best when lived fully. Sherri Mraz has trained at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition in NYC, is certified through Teachers College Columbia University and by the American Association of Drugless Practitioners (AADP). Liberate your Mind, Body & Soul
If you read last month’s issue, then you might be asking yourself, did she finish her first marathon that took place in Disney World on jan 13th. YeS I DID. With a smile on my face and time to spare, 26.2 miles never felt so good. I guess you can say I’m hooked and hope to complete more marathons in my lifetime.
Now that I went outside my comfort zone, maybe you should to by doing something you never did or thought of doing. I had the pleasure of interviewing Cora, the founder and owner of Moksha Yoga Studio. She opened her studio after realizing that traveling to Boca Raton to get her yoga fix, was going to be difficult after the birth of her daughter. opening her own studio was the answer and gave her the opportunity to share her passion with others.
Cora chose a name that means liberation or freedom which is what she believes in and offers many types of yoga classes so you are sure to find a style that benefits your needs. She believes in offering people options based on the type of yoga they prefer, but when asked which type she enjoys, her answer was vinyasa Flow, the power style of yoga which helps build strength, flexibility and cardio.

Comprehensive Eye Care
K
eeping up with your visual health is one of the best things you can do for yourself. Although routine visits to the eye doctor are something many of us don’t even think to schedule, unless we have a problem, they are extremely important to ensure future healthy vision. Annual exams monitor for the early development of some diseases that are otherwise undetectable until vision damage has already been done.
Dr. jason Gorscak, M.D. of Florida eye Microsurgical Institute is just the person to see to help keep your most valuable asset, your vision, in top shape. Dr. Gorscak, a New jersey native, began providing exceptional eye care to the South Florida community in September 2008 when he joined the Florida eye Microsurgical Institute team.
Gorscak grew up in the small town of Kinnelon, New jersey. It was there that he decided to go into the field of medicine. Always a math and science kind of guy, he realized that medicine was his calling after losing his grandmother to cancer.
“When we would visit her, we became very close with the doctors. They always helped her and my parents out,” Gorscak said. “I think seeing that was what opened the door for me to think about going into medicine.”
His path to becoming an eye care specialist began at johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. After attending johns Hopkins, he migrated to sunny South Florida to earn his medical degree at the University of Miami.
“Go for routine eye exams. Even if you don’t have any eye conditions, it’s important to go every 1-2 years if you’re 20-40 years old and every year if you’re over 40 years old.” 8 March 2013
Jason Gorscak, M.D.
While in Miami, Gorscak volunteered at the Bascom Palmer eye Institute, assisting in ophthalmologic research. He sat in on surgeries and observed the doctors at work. During this time, he made the decision to go into eye care. He witnessed the “indescribable happiness” on a female patient’s face after cataract surgery to restore her vision and fell in love with the field.
After medical school, he went back to New jersey to complete his residency. He finished his education at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New jersey in Newark. There he worked in the trauma center, where he dealt with many memorable emergencies including victims of gang shootings, a glaucoma patient who accidentally super-glued her eyes shut and a man with thyroid disease in a frenzy complaining that his “eye popped out.”

with Dr. Gorscak
Dr. Gorscak vowed to come back to Florida after his schooling was complete and in 2008 fulfilled his vow. He moved back down south where he began working for Florida eye Microsurgical Institute.
Florida eye Microsurgical Institute has 4 locations in South Florida. Their main office and surgical center is located in Boynton Beach and they have additional offices in Wellington, juno Beach and Boca Raton. Dr. Gorscak works mainly out of the Wellington office and does his surgeries in Boynton.
His specialty is cataract surgery (using the most advanced artificial lenses available) but he also handles many other eye conditions and disorders; including everything from routine eye exams to pterygium removals, laser treatments for glaucoma patients and the treatment and diagnosis of various eye diseases.
Aside from working in the office, Dr. Gorscak lectures once at month for residents and medical students in ophthalmology at Wellington Regional Hospital. There he stresses the importance of giving proper eye exams and teaches the correct way to examine a patient’s eye.
When he’s not helping patients in the exam room or lecturing at ophthalmologic seminars, he’s spending time with his wife and 1year-old son, Nio. He also enjoys playing tennis, golf and motorsports. He attends driver’s education courses and in the future, would like to teach people how to drive their cars on high performance tracks.
“Take your contacts out at night. Use artificial tears for dry eyes. Wear sunglasses when outdoors to protect your eyes from UV light.” For more information on Dr. Gorscak and Florida eye Microsurgical Institute, visit their website: www.fleyedocs.com.

3 TIPS FOR BETTER PERFORMANCE FOR ANY SPORT When it comes to children’s sports, both the individual and the team variety, there are two distinct categories of behavior that are important for family members to manage: the performance of the young person, and the behavior of the parents. Fortunately, whether you want to become a more composed and diplomatic parent while your child is on the court or field, or you want your child to be more relaxed and less anxious on the court or field, hypnosis can help. It simply involves quieting your mind and body and going to the place in your brain where your bad habits and selfdefeating thoughts live, and changing them into good ones. Here are three important tips for both parents and children.
1. Breathe. If you know you are about to go into a situation that you find stressful, either because you are having performance anxiety or you are anxious for your child, the most important thing you need to remember is to breathe. Your brain uses about 25% of your body’s oxygen, and it doesn’t get enough if you’re breathing is short and shallow. Deep breathing helps not only relieve tension in your body, but it helps your brain function better, and your brain is the command center for everything you do. everyone can benefit from the deep relaxation that breathing promotes.
2. Stop the negative chatter in your head. If your negative self-talk is about your attitude, your performance, the past, a projection about the future . . . no matter what the topic is, it must be addressed. If your selftalk is unrelated to what you’re doing in the moment, then it needs to stop completely. But if it’s related, then it needs to be changed to more positive, expansive, empowering talk of what’s possible and how the ideal moment would look and feel.
3. Change your concentration from scattered to optimal. The jury has been in for a while, and the reality is that the human brain isn’t set up to multi-task. If you’re stepping onto a tennis court and thinking about school, or if you’re watching your daughter’s swim meet and you’re thinking about work, then you’re telling your brain to attend to two very important things at the same time, and your brain would rather keep it to one.
No matter what sport your child participates in, from cheering to tennis to football to running and jumping, the same core principles are necessary for peak performance. And they’re similar to what’s necessary for diplomatic parenting. As a certified sports hypnotist and the Director and Founder of Summit Dynamics, LLC, I’ve been helping athletes from the professional, to the hobbyist, to the school-aged skater (and his/her parents!), for well over a decade. My one-onone sessions and catalog of over 300 CDs and five books, is available at www.summithypnosisandwellness.com, and you can book a private consultation at 561-841-7603.

A Handstand a Day
Written by: Kerri Verna Photo by: Naya Photography
A
bout a year ago I decided that I was going to master the crème de la crème of yoga poses, the handstand. Trying against the wall for the first time, I was surprised how hard it was to hold myself up and how winded I got after only 3 seconds. Being a fitness instructor for 10 years, I realized that if a handstand could make my heart beat that fast in that short amount of time then it was worth mastering. So, I started doing daily handstands. I changed nothing in my diet or my exercise routine yet after one month, I lost 5 pounds. one year later, I am on my hands a few times a day. I have noticed increased strength and definition in my arms, chest, shoulders and core not to mention it is just really fun to be able to pop into a handstand anywhere I want. Here are my top 5 reasons for you to start daily handstands: 1. Increased energy and metabolism. They are also excellent for finding physical and mental balance. 2. Hello abs and ripped arms! Your body will look amazing. 3. Quiet your mind. You will learn to be present and pay attention. It will help you let go of mind chatter. 4. Face your fears. Let’s be honest, it is scary to throw your feet up over your head. With practice you will be able to face your fear and conquer it. 5. Regain your youth. Handstands are just plain fun.
I encourage you to try a handstand every day for 30 days. Using a wall, placing your hands shoulder width apart. Lock your elbows and kick up resting your feet on the wall. experiment with your balance, rooting your fingertips firmly into the floor and slowing moving one leg at a time away from the wall. Think hips over shoulders and practice daily. eventually, you will be able to move away from the wall and impress all your friends with your new yoga trick!
Have fun handstanding!
Namaste,

s a medium, I am privileged to communicate with spirits, sometimes referred to collectively as “Spirit”. A spirit is the life force that lives on after it leaves the body through a transition known as death.
On a daily basis, I get to minister to the bereaved as well as the curious. Being an evidential medium enables me to take a person (starting with myself originally) beyond blind faith and offer proof that our consciousness survives death. What brings a spirit through to my awareness in a session or “reading” as it is commonly called, is that spirit's desire to communicate information that will give my clients peace of mind. The first thing a spirit wants surviving loved ones to know is that he or she is happy, whole, and a loving presence in their day-to-day life. There are a number of ways that spirits communicate with me and it varies from spirit to spirit as we retain our individuality when we make the transition to our “afterlife”.
When I “sit” with a client I never know what I am going to hear, see, feel “know” or even smell from a spirit communicator. I may hear a word such as the deceased's name, I may feel a sensation to indicate how they passed, I may see a vision, as either a still picture or a movie clip of a memory that the deceased shared with my client while they were living. My readings are noted for being upbeat as spirits typically show me their happy memories and we touch only briefly on their passing unless there is an issue surrounding the passing that needs to be resolved. The spirit person will often mention the names of other family members or friends who are in the afterlife with him.
Spirits also refer to the living, such as children, troubled or ill relatives to assure their loved ones that they are watching over them. If a person had a colorful personality in this life he or she will retain that personality and their communication will have the same flavor whether he or she was cranky, comical, opinionated or supportive. If you think that you sleep when you die, this column will be an eyeopener.
To experience communication with your own loved ones in Spirit, contact Sunnie at 561-386-1990 or email talkswithspirits@hotmail.com.
To witness actual readings online watch The Palm Beach Medium reality web series on SunnieBrooks.com. The February episode was sponsored by TacknRider of Wellington, FL. Show sponsors desiring unique and ubiquitous exposure please contact Sunnie.

A couple of years ago Massage envy added facials to their list of offerings. They relied upon the help of world-renowned dermatologist Dr. Howard Murad. Murad’s facial formulas are able to rapidly resolve specific skin concerns while supporting overall skin health. We had the chance to talk to eva Habib, esthetician at the new Wellington location. She explains that every Massage envy esthetician is trained by the Murad company. Murad makes skin-care easy with a color-coded system, depending on your type of skin. There are four main Murad facials available: Sensitive Skin, AntiAging, environmental Shield vitamin C and Clarifying enzyme Acne (for teens and adults with problem skin).

Massage Envy . . . New Location on 441 in the Whole Foods Plaza in Wellington
Massage envy is one of the fastest growing franchises in the country for a reason – they know how to make people happy and take away their aches and pains. I was lucky to be one of the first customers in their brand new location in the Whole Foods Plaza in Wellington. My massage therapist Lindsey asked if I had any “problem areas” before beginning. “Nope,” I said mistakenly, not aware of the knots in my back and the tightness in my arms, caused by too much typing at the computer. very quickly I realized that there were “problem areas,” and Lindsey was addressing all of them, releasing all of the tension in my body. It was a heavenly, relaxing experience, followed by one of their new add-on services, a foot scrub. I loved the lavender sugar foot scrub therapy, which is $10 add-on with any massage, well worth it.
In talking to owners Bob Klubek and josie Kern, along with their son Kevin Kern, I find out that they were not necessarily aiming to open a second location – but they had to do it out of necessity. “We were overbooked in our first location, so the corporate office asked us to,” says Bob Klubek. Their first location in the Costco plaza on Southern Boulevard in Royal Palm Beach is the busiest Massage envy spot in South Florida. even though they are open seven days a week, they still had to turn away appointments, so it was time to expand. Massage envy now has over 1,100 locations in the United States and Canada, continuing to grow. The new Wellington location, which just opened in january, offers thirteen massage rooms, and each room is equipped for both massages and facials. “A lot of our clients like to do a massage, followed by a facial,” explains josie Kern. It’s a nicer experience for the client to “stay put” after the massage, so they decided to equip each room for both services. one of the things people love about Massage envy is their annual subscription option, where you can “belong” and then can get massages for just $39 an hour. Also, there are a variety of massages to choose from, all at the same price. Normally, the first-time massage special is $49 and the first-time facial is $59. But check our “AW Coupons” page to print coupons for $10 oFF both of these (at the new Wellington location only). See “AW Coupons” for other specials at Massage envy too.
Here’s the list of services offered by Massage envy, thanks to their talented team of professionals. • Deep-tissue • Swedish • Hot Stone • Pregnancy • Couples • Reflexology • 90-minute or two-hour massage • Myofascial release • Trigger point therapy • Sports • Craniosacral therapy • Acupressure • Reiki (energy) • Lymphatic drainage • Also specializing in minors, geriatric, bilingual and injury massage • Add-on specials include – deep heat, aromatherapy and the (new) sugar foot scrub.

A good daily facial routine that she recommends is – Step 1. Cleanse and tone, Step 2. Treat and Repair (with masks, serums and/or lighteners) and Step 3. Hydrate and Protect. By following good morning and evening routines, you can be well on your way to a balanced, more youthful looking skin. one of the secrets to the success of Massage envy is their amazing staff. “We train staff very well here,” explains josie Kern. “It’s customer service from the moment someone walks in our door.” They have thirteen massage therapists and five facial estheticians at the new Wellington location, all trained by their corporate office and working with the same basic methods.
If you’ve never had a massage before, don’t hesitate to consult them first regarding which type of massage or facial is right for you. You can also specify if you’re more comfortable with a male or female massage therapist. During the massage, you can (and should) ask your massage therapist to use more or less pressure, depending on your level of comfort. I loved my massage and found that the massage therapist asked questions and informed me just enough, but not too much to be disruptive, about my level of comfort. josie Kern and Bob Klubek have four sons – David, jerome, Kevin and Michael. jerome and Michael are Regional Directors for Massage envy while Kevin (also a golf pro) helps to run the two local Massage envy stores. Meanwhile David, who works with car insurance, plans to get more involved in Massage envy in the near future. They are a multi-talented family. jerome Kern also helped to found orange Theory, a popular fitness gym.
