10 Tips to Surviving the Holidays with Cheer By Laura King, CHt, NLP, Life Coach

or most, the Holidays are associated with hope and optimism, yet statistically, it is the most stressful time of the year. With shopping, deadlines, crowds, endless to-do lists and high expectations, there is often little time to enjoy yourself in the spirit of the holidays. Is it possible to thrive this year, not just survive, and create a wonderful holiday season for yourself and your loved ones? YES! Just follow these 10 easy tips:

1. Relax! Everything will be “Perfect Enough.” If you’re a perfectionist about the gifts, décor, and food, how can you really enjoy the season? Learn to prioritize and delegate. The Holidays will still be beautiful and memorable, even if you don't do it all by yourself. 2. Create a budget AND STICK TO IT! Fretting over finances can put a damper on your Holiday cheer. List everything that may cost money this holiday season, then do a reality check. If it’s outside your budget, rethink your list. Remember, if you’re putting it on credit, you can’t afford it. 3. Holiday gatherings are not the time for family problem solving. Keep Peace on Earth, or at least at your family gathering, by avoiding contentious discussions. Talk about important issues before you gather, or wait until after the holidays. 4. Avoid Overindulging. That fourth or fifth sugar cookie or extra class of eggnog won't lift your spirits if you are stressed or depressed. If you catch yourself drinking or eating to relieve anxiety or loneliness, take a step back and think about the source of your feelings. Facing your emotions in a healthy way can keep you from overeating. 5. Give yourself a break. Pause between the endless tasks and holiday crowds to take a few deep, slow breaths, allowing your body to unwind and your mind to clear. Transcend tension while driving by taking a few deep breaths, making sure to exhale completely. 6. Treat yourself! Give yourself something that makes you really happy this holiday season, and give it early! By “filling your tank,” you will have more of yourself to offer as the holiday season takes over. 7. Just say NO. Keep your commitments manageable. Avoid stress from holiday overload by saying “no” or canceling things from your calendar. 8. Avoid people who ruin the Holiday. Set some very specific rules for habitual party-poopers – no heavy drinking or politics, for starters – and be direct, because rude people don’t pick up on subtle cues. Or simply uninvite them. 9. Exercise the blues away. Exercise and recreation help release endorphins, improving your emotions. 10. Listen daily to Empower Your Holiday Spirit – My Gift to You. This guided relaxation will help you achieve a state of inner peace and serenity. Read more at laurakinghypnosis.com. Offices in Palm Beach Gardens and Lake Worth. T hanksgiving Dinner: T he Ultimate Feast t’s November, and that means Halloween is behind us and Thanksgiving is just about here. As you begin to think about all those delicious foods you will either be preparing or consuming, I want you to also think about the caloric aspect of this holiday and how to be better prepared.

I

After researching on how many calories are in the average Thanksgiving dinner, the answer is anywhere between 3,000 - 4,500 calories. If calories aren’t important and your chin didn’t just drop, then there is no reason to continue to read on. But, if you are even a little bit concerned and care about what you are putting into your body and what it will take to burn off those calories, then read on.

One pound of body weight is equal to 3,500 calories. That means you can expect to gain 1-2 lbs. on that day alone. Actually, the scale could say more since you will be bloated from all the extra sodium, sugars and fats that are in dishes and beverages you normally don’t consume on a daily basis. If you plan on having leftovers, and who doesn’t, then you can watch that number go up even more during the days ahead.

indulge, but in small amounts and please try to stay away from having seconds.

I hope some of these numbers and information will help you manage your weight as this holiday season begins. With just some little changes to your holiday menu, you can make hundreds of calories disappear just by not having them as part of your meal in the first place.

Let me take this opportunity to wish everyone a Happy and Healthy Thanksgiving.

Taylor’s recipe for the month

Harvest Veggie Spaghetti Squash

Serves 5

2 Large Spaghetti Squash 3 Whole Carrots Peeled in their entirety 4-6 Garlic Cloves sliced or minced 5 Cups Spinach 2 White Onions sliced

What will it take to burn off those calories? My research indicates that an average 160 lb. person would have to run 4 hrs. at a moderate rate, swim for 5 hrs., or walk for 30 miles just to burn off that ultimate feast. We all know that most likely wouldn’t happen, so let’s break it down this way. An average hour of moderate cardio burns 500-650 calories. If you can make room in your schedule to workout for one week straight for 1 hr. each day, then you can expect to lose about 1 lb. So even breaking it down to a workout regimen that is more reasonable, you would still have to keep that exercise schedule going for several weeks thereafter. Therefore, the best way to enjoy this Thanksgiving dinner is to plan ahead.

Start increasing your workouts now so even if you do splurge, it won’t make such a big difference. Another option is to make better choices when filling up your dinner plate. Three ounces of white turkey meat is only 98 calories. Now start figuring in the rest like mashed potatoes (1 cup = 256 calories), cornbread stuffing (1 cup = 358 calories), and the must-have cranberry sauce (1 cup = 418 calories). Don’t forget to include the sweet potato pie with marshmallows, green bean casserole, plus wine and dessert. It’s calorie overload no matter how you look at it. This is why portion control is so important. You can

3 Cups White Cap mushrooms Sliced 2 Tbsp Olive Oil 2 Tsp Red Pepper Flakes Sea Salt and Black Pepper to taste

Preparation: Cut squash length wise in half, gut out seeds and rub inside with olive oil and sea salt. Place squash inside face down on baking sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for about 30 to 40 min (depending on size of squash) When squash is done it should be golden and slightly soft to touch. Flip squash over and allow cooling for 20 minutes. While squash is cooling, in large sauté pan, on medium heat, add garlic, olive oil, peeled carrots, onion and red pepper flakes and cook for about 10 minutes. Then add mushroom, spinach, salt and pepper for an additional 5 to 10min. Fork squash out of outer layer by dragging fork from top to bottom and into the large sauté pan with the other veggies. It should appear in string like form, hence “spaghetti” squash! Mix all together and serve with or without parmesan cheese on top!

November is National Diabetic Eye Disease Awareness Month Anyone with type one or type two diabetes can develop diabetic retinopathy, a degenerative disease of the retina that can result in permanent vision loss if left undetected and untreated. This is why Dr. Jason Gorscak, Florida Eye Microsurgical Institute’s comprehensive ophthalmologic specialist, urges anyone with diabetes to get their eyes examined annually. “Everyday visual changes may not be obvious – you may be driving, reading, working with no notice of any sight impairment,” says Dr. Gorscak, “however, physical changes in the retina and the blood vessels of the retina could be beginning – changes that would only be detected during an eye examination.”

A typical exam with Dr. Gorscak includes a visual acuity test, pupil dilation, and ophthalmoscopy and tonometry tests. If any changes or abnormalities are discovered, Dr. Gorscak recommends his patients see Dr. Randy Katz, Florida Eye’s macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy & medical/surgical retinal specialist.

Dr. Gorscak focuses on comprehensive eye care at Florida Eye Microsurgical Institute, including diagnosing and treating cataract conditions, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy.

A Different Kind of Fitness By Saajida Shakeer | Photography by Robyn Barkley

When most people hear the word “gym”, a certain image comes to mind: a huge center filled with various cardio equipment, the clanking of weight machines, high-energy music blasting throughout the room, etc. For some, that is the type of atmosphere they thrive in physically. But for many others, those gyms don’t get them the physical results they need. The key factor? It’s simple. Those gyms are impersonal. eet Ncognito Fitness. Like a breath of fresh air, this fitness center is more than just a gym. It’s a place one can go to improve one’s entire lifestyle. With comprehensive plans catered to an individual’s physical goals, Ncognito is a unique business that is personal. It is all about you.

M

8 November 2012

The idea for Ncognito was born years ago when owner Marcus Nisbett lived in New York. After a bad car accident in which he suffered serious multiple injuries, Nisbett had to undergo rehabilitation. Throughout his recovery, however, he became increasingly fascinated with the process of rehabilitation and the way the body works. He realized that fitness doesn’t have to be only cardio and strength training. He experienced first-hand how flexibility, stretching, and massage lend a major hand in helping the body to recover. He wanted to learn more and decided to go to massage school. Motivated by all he had gone through, Nisbett subsequently created a business plan for a new type of fitness center, which would have the essential high-quality exercise equipment, www.banzaiwellness.com

but would also incorporate massage and nutrition in a minimized space. After moving to South Florida to be closer to family, Ncognito was founded in Wellington in 2007.

Within two years, business was booming and they had to relocate to a larger space in Royal Palm Beach. Clientele was made up of all types. Because of early and flexible hours, Nisbett and his team found that busy professionals, such as doctors in the area, were able to use the facility to fit their hectic schedules. Their clients began referring everyone they knew, from family members to coworkers, and soon Ncognito had established a fun, family atmosphere.

So, how does it all work? When a new client signs up at Ncognito, he or she receives a 30-minute fitness evaluation. The evaluation tests the individual’s muscular strength, cardio endurance, flexibility, and balance. Fitness goals are discussed and then a plan is designed based on the profile. They can then work out as many times a week as the plan suggests with a personal trainer. A typical session includes cardio and flexibility training. Afterwards, each client is treated to a few minutes of stretching in a private room with a licensed massage therapist. Clients also receive complimentary water, fresh fruit, and a towel for their workout session. There is also the option to meet with a registered dietician and create a nutritional plan, which ranges from a basic weekly meal plan to having meals prepared and delivered at home.

It’s now been five years since Ncognito has opened and changed the way people meet their fitness needs. Because massage has become such a big part of the business (people can make appointments for massages without having to sign up for personal training – another reason why this sets them apart from other fitness centers), the team at Ncognito has plans to relocate to a larger facility, as well as open other locations in West Palm Beach, Boca Raton, and Palm Beach Gardens.

Nisbett says their success is all due to the loyalty of their clients and the teamwork of everyone involved at Ncognito. “It is such a fun

www.banzaiwellness.com

atmosphere here,” he says. In fact, they plan to commemorate this important anniversary with a private event celebrating their clientele. “It’s all about appreciation for our clients.”

Their success can also be attributed to the fact that they have proven that personalized service makes all the difference when it comes to health and fitness. Ncognito has been invaluable to so many because, as Nisbett points out, “We’re not your typical facility. Some people call us a gym, some call us a massage spa. We’re not like anything else that’s out there.” “Everyone’s path to health is a matter of asking the right questions,” Nisbett says. And Ncognito has just the answer.

erbal therapies are gaining more interest as the public moves away from the pharmaceuticals’ side effects. Some of the subjects we will touch upon are beyond the scope of an article, but I hope you will gain some understanding of the use and misuse of herbs.

There are generally three types of patients: some that can take a full dose of anything and have no ill effects; those that are normal and have mild side effects; and those that can take little to no Western medication since they have severe reactions. There are also a rare few that have opposite reactions to the medications.

Staying Safe with Herbs Western medicine is both evidence (studies) and experience-based (clinical practice). Most medications are clinically used for something other than for which they were studied. Most ‘practice medicine’ is learned in residencies and internships and is centered on the symptom cessation. Most other traditions center upon treating an underlying disharmony first (cause), and then the result of that disharmony (symptom). To oversimplify: fix the leaky pipe (cause) rather than keep cleaning up the water on the floor (symptom). Western views tend to see the body mechanically using Cartesian and linear thought. This is excellent for some endeavors, such as emergency medicine and surgery. In the Eastern tradition, the body is seen as a garden or ecosystem. Management of all the components leads to maximum productivity and longevity.

There are thousands of years of written and oral history about herbs. Most medications come from herbs. The key component is taken out, concentrated and taken up to a toxic dose, and then reduced to determine a therapeutic dose. For example: aspirin comes from White Willow, and in toxic doses causes ear ringing. Because herbs have

www.banzaiwellness.com

the original components, the number of side effects is less, but sometimes they have to be taken longer and in bigger doses to have the same effect. The advantage of herbs is easier dosing, and fewer side effects. Herbal formulas often address two components- the cause and the result. Often in a chronic situation, a cause can take three months or more to shift in a positive direction before you will be able to ‘see’ a result.

No medicine is one hundred percent effective. If the desired results from herbal therapies are not happening, it can be from a variety of reasons: the dosage could be incorrect, the herbs themselves may not be potent due to age or condition, the frequency not being taken as recommended, not enough time taking them, and/or simply the herb is not getting into the body.

The strongest potency is fresh herbal liquid boiled at home. The bad taste and smell makes compliance low. Next are premade herbal liquids, but their shelf life is short. The next level of potency is powders mixed in water or placed in capsules. The lowest is compressed caplets.

Thus, we can see that there are a variety of reasons why herbal therapies don’t have the desirable effect. The same concept also holds true in Western medicine: compliance, dose, strength, absorption and more.

We are cutting new trails in integrative medicine, and we don’t always know how food, chemicals, medications, herbs, vitamins and supplements all intermix. The safest way to take herbs is to take them a couple hours apart and, of course, check with your physician. Oftentimes, people take too much. Sometimes stopping everything (except pharmaceuticals) –helps the patient feel better after a few weeks. Sometimes there are too many cooks in the kitchen, or just too many substances going through the organs. I have seen this most commonly in patients with vague belly symptoms or dull headaches.

A person can take several products for all the right reasons but the combinations unknowingly can cause a problem. One might take vitamin C for the immune system, Gingko for memory, Vitamin E for arthritis, and aspirin from the doctor, but each one of these thin the blood. One unknowingly has created a problem.

One scenario might be to fix one system of the body to heal another. In fertility cases, time is needed to regulate the cycle. Once regulated, the body is ready to accept fertility herbs and acupuncture. It can take months to rebuild body systems. Impatience and unrealistic expectations have cost lots of people time, money and effort.

It is difficult to sum up herbal theory and treatment strategy to a patient. All of this can be overwhelming and leads us to the question: “How do we find good herbal help?” You want someone with good instinct, education, experience, solid degrees, and who are open and honest. Making decisions together is better than blindly following. Fibromyalgia A hard term to say, even harder to understand

By Steve Lomax, P.T.

You might have heard of this term or know someone who has it. For a condition that affects over 12 million people in the United States, one might think it would be better understood. Parkinson’s disease and MS (multiple sclerosis) each affect less than one million Americans, yet many people are familiar with those conditions. In fact, fibromyalgia is the second most common musculoskeletal condition after osteoarthritis. Fibromyalgia is a chronic medical condition, which causes widespread pain in various parts of the body. The origin of the term is translated as “muscle fiber pain”. It can be hard to identify, understand and treat successfully. The diagram shown here displays the 18 tender points (9 pairs) that physicians use to diagnose this condition. There needs to be at least 11 of those points that demonstrate pain when pressure is applied. Someone with fibromyalgia will tell you how those tender points seem to vary (or travel) from one day to another. There is no cure for fibromyalgia, but many forms of treatment available. There have been 3 drugs approved by the FDA - two of them first used for depression, the other for seizures. The benefits of medicine have shown limited results, as has behavioral (cognitive) therapy. The more effective treatments for fibromyalgia are those that focus on diminishing those tender points and their debilitating lifestyle effects. These clients need to break that vicious cycle of pain and avoidance, which leads to stiffness, postural changes and improper circulation. This is done through therapeutic massage, trigger point therapy, proper body mechanics, education, nutrition, exercise, and body awareness.

As a physical therapist that has treated hundreds of clients with fibromyalgia over the last 25 years, it is become clear to me that the best outcome is the whole body approach. What that entails is involving all disciplines (medical, physical and behavioral therapy, nutrition, spinal alignment, pain management) along with the client’s support system (family, friends, caregivers, religion) to be “on the same page” of what each of them provides that will improve the client’s way of life. This approach needs to continue throughout the client’s life, just as someone with high blood pressure or high blood sugar needs to monitor themselves consistently. The Wellness Experience is best equipped to care for those with this challenging condition. We have a team under one roof that cares and communicates about that one client – physical therapist, chiropractor, massage therapist, acupuncturist and nutritionist. “W ill I Get Meningitis?!” patient recently called the pharmacy in an absolute panic, wondering if the eye drops we compounded for her last month were contaminated and if she could contract meningitis. I was so surprised; I didn’t know how to answer her for a minute. Of course, I assured her it would be nearly impossible to contract meningitis from eye drops and that we take extreme precautions to produce sterile ophthalmic products. Although it was an uncomfortable conversation to have with a patient in such mental distress, it served to provide me the opportunity to have the conversation with all of you.

A

As I am sure everyone has heard, in the previous few weeks a certain compounding pharmacy up north is facing charges for several cases of deadly fungal meningitis due to contamination while compounding an epidural. Our deepest sympathies and prayers go out to those who have lost loved ones or have been injured in this situation. This is an outrageous, isolated occurrence and is news no one hopes to hear, least of all other compounding pharmacies. When things like this happen, albeit rare, it shakes up the entire industry. As an owner of a compounding pharmacy, one begins to take a closer look at

www.banzaiwellness.com

one’s own practices and hopes to find no discrepancies or short-comings.

To be fair, compounding indictable medications is a whole different world than compounding non-sterile medications. There are many more precautions to be taken while compounding medications that will be injected directly into the body. Furthermore, injectables entering the cerebrospinal fluid (fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord) directly, i.e. epidurals, have even more stringent precautions to follow. The defenses are much lower in the central nervous system, which includes the spine and brain. Therefore, the slightest mistakes may become deadly. Most compounding pharmacies do not partake in manufacturing of such delicate medications.

I would personally like to assure all those who are concerned about the safety of compounded medications that, at My Community Pharmacy, we take EXTREME precautions to insure this type of error does not EVER occur. We employ state of the art equipment as well as follow aseptic techniques diligently to provide the absolute safest products to our beloved patients. Additionally, we NEVER attempt to compound medications for which our facility

By Meroe Rabieifar

is not properly equipped. This includes epidurals. Please rest assured, your compounded medications from My Community Pharmacy are absolutely safe.

If you find yourself questioning the need for compounding pharmacies, consider this:

1. Without compounding pharmacies, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) would be virtually impossible. 2. Medications are phased out by large pharmaceutical companies when determined to be “unprofitable.” 3. Many doctors value the role compounding pharmacies play in patient care. 4. We are able to cater to the SPECIFIC needs of each patient. 5. Manufacturers do not produce certain medications for small patient populations, such as pediatric and veterinary patients.

In short, many essential medications are provided by compounding pharmacies that are simply not available from any other sources. Most compounding pharmacies produce quality, safe and effective products. We would like to sincerely thank those of you who have put your faith in My Community Pharmacy and we take it with utmost seriousness to continue to earn that faith.

Oval shaped face: If you have an oval face, you are in luck as this type of face will adhere to many different styles of haircuts. If you want to add a bit of length to your face, you would have to prefer a long hairstyle, or get volume upwards which would give you a more rectangular look. I would recommend angled bangs for this type of face.

Reverse triangle face: With this type of face it is easy to make changes and apply different haircuts. It is also ideal for make-up. If you want your face to stand out more, you should prefer short hair styles by adding more volume upwards. But if you want to give your face a softer and balanced look, then you should choose a haircut that creates more volume on the back of the neck, and less volume upwards (towards the top of your head).

Triangle shaped face: A triangle look might show people as less energetic and tired, but choosing the right haircut will add a more energetic look. The ideal cut is having short sideburns and adding more volume upwards with square shaped cuts.

Q: Mr. Topal, can you tell us the ideal hair cut for different face shapes?

Diamond-shaped face: Almost any style haircut will go with this face shape. Long, short, straight, wavy, or even bangles would work fine for a diamond-shape face. You just need to discuss some of the details with your stylist to determine which cut would suit you the most.

Muzo: Well, if you’re having a haircut with a pivot point technique, you must discuss certain details with your hair designer. He/she has to know whether you want your face or hair to stand out; also it would be a good idea to talk about your lifestyle, your weight, your height and even your personality. After all, the hair designer would want the best result for your hair; so it’s important that he/she focuses on all the aspects above. Q: How do you determine the style for each person who needs a good hair cut?

Muzo: First of all, as designers we have to know different face shapes, then we have to understand the lifestyle of the client (we might even have to make a character analysis of the individual). In order to have the best result in hair cutting, we have to see the shape of the face and choose the best hair style for our client. Initially, I must explain the 7 different face shapes and their ideal models. Round shaped face: This face usually has a soft and balanced look. If the person is not happy with their round facial shape, and wants to have a more a narrow/oval look, then they must prefer a cut which gives volume. This way the emphasis will be more on the hair than the face. Cuts that have front strokes will make your face thinner. (Pinches of hair accumulated more on the front will make your face look thinner.)

Square shaped face: This type of face has more of a sharp look but it’s also a balanced shape. If you don’t want to change the square shape of your face the best hair cut will be a square cut. But if you want to soften your complexion then you should prefer rounder styles. For example you can use bangles or pieces of hair towards your temples. Rectangular shaped face: If you have a rectangular face and want it to look shorter, the chin level hair cut would be ideal for you. This hair cut will give the face a more balanced look.

Is Your Metabolism Making You Fat?

Ever heard or used the excuse - “Oh I have a slow metabolism, that’s why I can’t lose weight?” So how true is that statement? Can your metabolic rate affect how much you weigh or how quickly you lose weight? Is your metabolism the reason why that when we age we mysteriously put on weight, even though we eat the same amount and our exercise routine remains the same?

By Cheryl Alker

Before I answer these questions and more, what is metabolism?

Your metabolism, experts say, involves a complex network of hormones and enzymes that not only convert food into fuel but also affect how efficiently you burn that fuel. In the simplest terms, metabolic rate is the rate at which your body burns calories. A calorie is a unit of energy. For the human body, it’s referred to as “food energy”.

The process of metabolism establishes the rate at which we burn our calories and, ultimately, how quickly we gain weight or how easily we lose it. (To continue, visit www.AroundWellington.com and click on “Health & Fitness,” October issue). November 2012
