Honing Our Skills ♠ It should be obvious to anyone who reads my tech stories that I could use some, shall we say, technical training. Now, I can turn wrenches and swing hammers with the best of ’em, but I could really use some refinement from someone who knows better. Being self-taught is great and all, but sometimes a bit of advice from a professional can sort out all kinds of bad habits or techniques that might be preventing good work from becoming great work. One of those tasks that I always seem to fight my way through is metalworking. Fixin’ dents, shaping metal, and patching panels is fun, but my results always leave me wanting. They say “practice makes perfect,” but when you’re going at it all wrong, perfection can be unexceptional. With a looming project that’s going to require an awful lot of metalwork, I decided I’d better brush up on my technique. So, I hit the books. And by books, I mean the place everyone goes to learn anything, YouTube. I watched videos with terrible audio, videos with terrible lighting, videos completely off-topic, and videos that took 15 minutes of rambling before the “host” got around to the point. It was excruciating and at the end of the evening, I felt like I actually knew less than I did before. I did watch some pretty sweet burnout videos however, so not all was lost. In need of a good alternative, I turned to our very own Professor Hammer, Ron Covell, to see if he couldn’t point me in the right direction. Ron hosts hands-on seminars throughout the year, teaching all kinds of metalworking techniques, so I knew I had the right guy for the job. After exchanging a handful of ideas, we decided it would be best to get together in our tech center and power through a laundry list of different jobs that we thought topical. After watching Installation Jason Scudellari MIG weld without gloves or a helmet and tech center assistant Christian Arriero try to put out a welding fire with his forearm, I thought we could all use some training, so I invited them as well. Keeping those guys on my good side means they let me in the shop once in a while!

classictrucks.com
Like many of the stories that end up on the pages of this very magazine, that basic idea grew until we realized we had a pretty decent method of working up a handful of really good tech stories. Starting with the basics, I figured we could cover basic hammer and dolly techniques, including dent repair and basic panel working, and go from there. I’d like to cover all the basic processes that one encounters when playing with rusty old trucks. That said, if you guys have a particular process or technique covered, shoot me an email and if we have time we’ll add to our syllabus. I’m very excited to corner Ron for the day and learn a few new things in our workshop. I just need to remember not to talk during class and to raise my hand when I have a question. I wouldn’t want to land in detention!
CHRIS' 1958 Chevy Apache
SOME THINGS ARE JUST MEANT TO BE. In many ways, Chris Baker’s 1958 Chevy Apache found him. It wasn’t really the year he was looking for, but as soon as he saw it, he knew they were meant for each other. At LMC Truck, we understand that every mile in your truck is like a chapter in a book. And those chapters, when bound together, become a storyline that is passed down from generation to generation. Only you can say how long your truck story will be. But as long as you’re telling it, we’ll be here. Because in the end, our story IS your story. And we hope it’s told for generations to come. Watch Chris’ story and share your own at LMCTruckLife.com

01. Tough Battery Cut-Off
Whether you’re selecting a battery cut-off for theft deterrent or for a simple way to disconnect your battery, make sure that it won’t be overloaded by your truck’s charging system. Watson’s StreetWorks now offers a battery cut-off rugged enough for the largest charging systems. This sealed unit is built for a continuous load of 300 amps and will handle 2,500 amps for a 10-second surge. Measuring 5x33⁄4x2 inches, the weatherproof unit can be installed wherever you need it. A low-amperage bypass circuit keeps clocks and computers operating. Choose either a toggle switch or round rocker switch. Switch, hardware, and instructions are included. •For more information, contact Watson’s StreetWorks at (866) 859-0513 or www.watsons-streetworks.com.
02. Cool Your Shop
Keep things comfortable in your garage or shop with an evaporative cooler from OEMTools. The new 24886 2,500cfm 115V Three-Speed Evaporative Cooler is a portable, efficient, and affordable alternative to air conditioning. Using a 1⁄5hp motor and an oscillating design, the unit can cool a 750-square-foot area for as long as four hours. This high-performance cooler has the capacity to hold more than 10 gallons of water and features a submersible pump with a low water cut-off mechanism. Long-lasting cooling pads ensure enhanced airflow and cooling. Heavy-duty castors and low weight make the unit easily portable. •For more information, contact OEMTools at (866) 458-2472 or www.oem-tools.com.
03. 4-Ton Floor Jacks
Harbor Freight Tools lays claim to being the nation’s leading supplier of floor jacks. The Daytona line of jacks, available exclusively at Harbor Freight, includes the 4-ton, heavy-duty steel floor jack. The strongest jack in Daytona’s lineup, with a lift range of 41⁄4 to 201⁄2 inches, it is perfect for lifting trucks and SUVs. In addition to rugged construction with heavyduty, rust-resistant hardware, and an industrial-strength powdercoat finish, it features a sleek, modern design. All Daytona jacks have a rotating, removable jack saddle that adapts quickly to lift accessories, and ball bearing premium rear swivel casters providing 360-degree mobility.

PARTTIME 04. Cool Your Trans Fluid Flex-A-Lite introduced a new line of transmission coolers. The all-aluminum construction combines lightweight with maximum strength, providing excellent cooling for such tough environments as racing and towing, as well as for daily driving use. The patented dimpled plate and fin design adds strength and keeps the fluid mixed as it flows through the cooler for improved heat transfer and cooling. Several sizes are available, with a variety of row counts and your choice of either barbed or A/N fittings. These transmission coolers can also be used as power-steering coolers. Flex-A-Lite has a new line of engine oil coolers as well. •For more information, contact Flex-A-Lite at (253) 922-2700 or www.flex-a-lite.com.
05. Retro Wires For Hemis Enthusiasts who prefer the classic look of fabric plug wires are familiar with Vintage Wires. The company (acquired by ididit in 2017) now manufactures ignition wire sets for 426 Hemi applications. With a lacquer-covered cotton braid outer casing wrapping a spiral-wound suppression core, they look retro but the 7.8mm braided spark plug wires deliver high-tech performance. The distributor cap ends are offered unfinished so that they can be custom-tailored to length. Cable sets are offered in six color options: black with orange tracers, red with black tracers, red with black and yellow tracers, black with red tracers, satin black, and yellow with red and black tracers. •For more information, contact Vintage Wires at (517) 424-0577 or www.vintagewires.com.
06. Stude ’Rails Why repair an old chassis when Fatman Fabrications builds brand new ones to your specs? Fatman has addressed the Studebaker truck market with high-quality chassis for ’49-’64 trucks. These framerails are designed specifically for your pickup, and include body, bumper, and radiator mounts for easy installation. In addition, your choice of engine and transmission will be mounted, along with such options as RideTech components, coilovers, power-assisted steering and brakes, four-wheel disc brakes, stainless steel control arms, and rear axles. Brake plumbing, Borgeson U-joints, and epoxy primer options are available as well. •For more information, contact Fatman Fabrications at (704) 545-0369 or www.fatmanfab.com.

RED HOT Gef Freese’s ’54 Ford F-100 Packs Plenty of Features •By Chuck Vranas
G
rowing up in the rural town of Pittsfield, New Hampshire, Gef Freese was enamored with many of the farm vehicles he would come to bond with throughout his youth. Wheeling his neighbor’s tractors and trucks while doing chores on the farm, one particular ’47 Ford dump truck garnered his attention on a regular basis while being both utilitarian and fun to drive at the same time. As the years passed he spent plenty of time with his sister’s older friends since they would regularly buy old cars, hop them up, and street race them on the weekends. At the same time he would also spend plenty of time hanging out with his dad who was also deep into the car hobby by helping him detail the family’s daily drivers. Anyone who was ever involved with plastic kit models knows that one of the most 20

fun aspects was modifying them with accessory parts from other kits to create neat custom models. Gef spent plenty of time at the kitchen table doing just that, obviously paving a way for his appreciation of customizing. When he got his license the future was packed with plenty of cool rides, including a number of Corvettes and truck. Somehow, though, something was missing. With a deep appreciation for classic trucks
he made a decision to look for one that was minted on the assembly line the year he was born. It had to be a Ford F-100, so he started a search locally. If you’re from New Hampshire and into hot rods and customs it’s easy to follow a path to Traditional Speed and Custom located in Pittsfield. Gef scheduled a meeting with shop owner Eli English to see if he could lend a hand in finding his elusive unicorn, and it wasn’t long till English sourced a clean ’54 Ford F-100 in North Carolina. After completing the deal, the truck was shipped to the shop for evaluation. Basically, it was a clean, amateur restoration that would be a perfect
base to start with. Gef’s ideas for the build outlined a very subtle F-100 with razor-sharp lines, a cool stance, and plenty of venom underhood. To bring the sketchpad of ideas to life, English contacted e.Black Design and spoke with Eric Black to outline the concept for him to create a rendition from incorporating a myriad of subtle changes to the truck. It’s a difficult line to walk when you choose to enhance the form of an iconic pickup truck, especially one as revered as a ’54 Ford F-100. From every angle the model exudes visual elements, immediately making it recognizable as a true classic. Black nailed the look and once the design was received, it was time to start the build. For a rock-solid base English contacted Art Morrison Enterprises to special-order a perimeter frame with a 124-inch wheelbase (6 inches over stock) along with a number of AME suspension components. Once received the team got busy by adding custom body mounts and rear crossmember along with incorporating the original Ford front 22

crossmember. Out back a Winters Performance quick-change spins 3.78:1 gears through 31-spline Dutchman axles and is suspended in place by an AME four-bar combined with a custom sliding wishbone track bar and a JRI hydraulic ride system with 3 inches of height adjustment. For the ultimate in handling an AME IFS with tubular upper and
lower control arms, 2-inch dropped spindles, and an adjustable sway bar was deftly matched to a JRI hydraulic ride system. When there’s a need to stop a Wilwood Engineering power dual master pushes fluid through NiCopp lines to matching 14-inch drilled and vented discs out back with six-piston calipers and 13-inch units up front. To add an aggressive look
a set of big ’n’ little Vintage Wheels 427 Pin Drive–series wheels wear low-profile Nitto rubber. There’s nothing quite like searing performance in your classic truck and for this Gef went straight to the head of the class by contacting Roush Performance for one of their exclusive 427 IR crate V-8 engines. Fully dyno-tested to produce 560 hp,
it’s packed with a speed shop full of go-fast goods, starting with an iron four-bolt main block that’s filled with a forged steel crank spinning matching H-beam rods topped with forged aluminum pistons. Plenty of thump comes from a Roush Performance cam while a set of their custom CNC-ported aluminum heads make plenty of power, especially
when urged by an eight-stack, Weber-styled EFI system. It all sparks to life through an MSD ignition and dumps spent gases through a set of custom Sanderson headers to a 3-inch stainless exhaust with Flowmaster mufflers. The goods move through a TREMEC T56 trans equipped with a McLeod dualdisc clutch to a custom aluminum October 2018

driveshaft from Inland Empire Driveline. Weaving a blend of subtle enhancements to the cab and bed to make them look like they came from the factory takes plenty of expertise and experience. This is where the team at Traditional Speed and Custom, including English, Keith Belgard, and Ryan Jutras brought Black’s vision to life. To start, the roof was chopped 1 inch above the windshield (allowing for a stock windshield) followed by the cab and doors being stretched 2 inches and the cowl side vents being filled. The wheel openings on the front fenders were then moved forward 4 inches, complemented by the rear wheel opening being 24

moved 1 inch back along with the bed being shortened 2 inches and channeled 1 inch over the frame with the cab while also stretching the running boards. Out back a set of hand-formed wheeltubs make room for larger rubber while underhood you’ll find a smoothed stock firewall accented by a custom-fabbed radiator
shroud and filler panels with custom inner fenders. This is just a hint of all of the subtle changes made to the sheetmetal. From there the team completely metal-finished the cab and bed, set all the gaps, and prepped it for a mile-deep coating of Nason Fleet Red from Jutras’ spray gun, bringing it all to life. To bring an equal amount of allure inside the doors were first fabricated to flow gracefully into the factory dash, which features a full compliment of dials from Classic Instruments. Steering moves through a ’64 Ford F-250 4x4 wheel linked to a stainless column from Johnny Law Motors with shifts by Lokar while cool breezes flow from

During the reassembly process team member Bill Connors also spent countless hours tending to the final 26

■ From ’41-’59 Chevrolet pickups continued to evolve. In some years, differences were easy to spot; in other years, not so much. The most accurate means of identification is the id plate on the left front body hinge pillar.
Classic Trucks in Retrospect A Brief History of ’41-’59 Chevrolet Pickups Words Ron Ceridono • Images Classic Trucks Archive
Chevrolet has a long history
as a truck manufacturer that dates back to 1918. And while there were many noteworthy examples produced in the early years we’re going to concentrate on identifying pickup offerings from 1941-1959. In 1941 Chevrolet restyled their pickups; the most notable change from the previous year was new front sheetmetal. The grille featured an upper section with horizontal bars while the lower portion had vertical bars and the headlights were now mounted on the fenders. The ’42 trucks were introduced in October 1941 with no noticeable changes. Unfortunately, like most facets of civilian life, World War II interrupted production of Chevrolet pickups and the assembly lines came to a halt in January of that year. However, Chevrolet was given permission by 30

■ Chevrolet introduced their stylish new truck in 1947. With some minor exceptions it remained essentially the same through 1953.
■ A new grille made the ’54 and First Series ’55 trucks easily recognizable.
■ Second Series ’55 Chevy pickups were completely redesigned and included styling cues similar to those found on the all-new passenger cars, including the egg-crate grille. There were only minor trim changes for 1956.
■ For 1957 Chevrolet redesigned the grille, but little else changed.
■ In 1958 Chevrolet followed the new trend toward quad headlamps. This example is a ’59; the only visual clue is the difference is in the hood emblem. The ’58 emblem is thinner with the wide portion on the bottom.
the government to produce trucks for “high priority” civilian use (those individuals/businesses considered to be vital to the war effort). Due to material shortages these trucks came with painted grilles, bumpers, hubcaps, and trim—the “blackout” theme continued with the resumption of civilian production in late 1945 and early 1946. 32

By the middle of 1946 Chevrolet once again began production of pickups with bright trim. Chevrolet touted these “new” postwar offerings as being improved by virtue of the experience gained building military vehicles during the war, however they looked identical to the ’42 models. In 1947 Chevrolet introduced the new Advance Design series with what was called the Unisteel cab. Gone was the crank-out windshield, and the windshield wipers were now mounted on the cowl and cab quarter windows were optional. The headlights were repositioned in the fenders and the new grille had five grille bars with parking lights between the top two. While there were no vent windows in the doors, there were vents that could be opened in the top of the cowl and in the lower portion of the driver side cowl. For 1948 Chevrolet trucks remained virtually unchanged, then in 1949 an obvious difference was the location of the gas tank. The ’47-’48 trucks had the filler for the frame-mounted gas tank on the lower right side of the pickup bed. In 1949 the tank was moved inside the cab and the filler was now behind the right door. Other than relocating the gas tank, some minor trim changes, and a few mechanical improvements there were no significant changes made for 1949 and 1950. The most noticeable change for 1951 was the elimination of the cowl vent in front of the driver door and the addition of opening vent windows in both doors. Due to material

grilles were still unavailable. Chevrolet made some noticeable alterations in their truck line for 1954. There was a new grille with a single horizontal bar with large parking lights mounted below. A curved, one-piece windshield replaced the previously used two-piece flat glass windshield with a center divider. The dashboard was redesigned, there was a revised pickup bed, and round taillights were now used. In 1955 there were two versions of Chevy’s pickups. What’s known as the First Series was basically the same as those offered the previous year; the Second Series trucks were introduced in March 1955. There were a variety of mechanical changes. Along with the new V-8 engine that was available the electrical system was now 12V and the closed driveline was eliminated. The redesigned “Task Force” trucks for 1955 had grilles and hooded headlights similar to the recently introduced passenger cars. There was a new wraparound windshield with either the standard small rear window or what was called the panoramic wraparound rear glass. The new pickup bed had separate fenders with short running boards behind the cab and the dash was redesigned. Also new for 1955 was the Cameo that featured a bed with smooth side panels and unique taillights. Other than some changes in badging, ’56 pickups, including the Cameo, remained unchanged. In 1957 a revised pickup grille was introduced that also appeared on the limited-production Cameo along with new trim on the bed.
■ From 1954-on the Stepside pickups used round taillights.

■ Rotary door handles were used through 1951 with separate locks in the passenger door only. It’s said this was done to discourage exiting into traffic (which some say was illegal in some states), others say it was simply a cost-cutting move.
■ Through 1953 Chevy truck bed rails were angled. Note the rectangular taillight.
■ From 1954 on the bed rails were flat. Note the optional cab corner windows.

versions). Along with the standard Stepside bed with running boards and external fenders, there was a new Fleetside option with smooth sides. Cameos received the revised front sheetmetal, however the bed remained the same as found on the ’57s. Other than larger nameplates on the front fenders there were no significant changes for 1959. The popularity of Chevrolet trucks is undeniable as sales records indicate that more than 7 million were sold from 1918 through the 1959 model year. Thanks to the number of Chevrolet trucks that have been produced, good examples can still be found. And thanks to a long list of Classic Trucks advertisers, all the parts needed to make them better than new are readily available.
■ For 1954 the dashboard was changed again. While two gauge pods were still featured the dash was shaped differently to accommodate the curved windshield and the radio speaker grille now had vertical slots.
■ For the Second Series ’55 trucks the new cab also featured a more car-like instrument cluster. The dash design continued through 1959.

GM’s First Luxury Truck Made Even More Luxurious •By Joe Greeves

ots of us get started in the sport early but when you’re a guy driving a $100 ’32 Ford at age 13, it’s a safe bet that your future is going to revolve around cool custom vehicles. That’s how Doug Kenny from Riverview, Florida, got started and his enthusiasm shows no signs of letting up anytime soon. Currently, his collection of more than 30 customs and authentic race cars means that he has something new and different to drive every day. Doug grew up in an automotive environment, working as a kid in his brother’s garages and loving every minute. Now that he’s retired, creating unique vehicles is his favorite pastime, like this ’57 Chevrolet Cameo built for his wife, Debra. Predictably, she is also an enthusiast and since great minds think alike, it was time for her to have her own custom truck.
One of GM’s handsomest offerings, the Cameo was a trendsetter during its brief 31⁄2-year production run and is now highly collectible. It’s considered by many to be the first of the “luxury” pickups, complete with an airy cockpit featuring wraparound glass, unique fiberglass rear fenders and tailgate, taillights adapted from the ’54 Bel Air, and a whole lot more chrome than previously found on pickups. Doug’s search uncovered 38

this one, previously modified with a late-model big-block and a Chevelle front clip. The distinctive-looking truck became Debra’s daily driver but it didn’t take long before the pair came up with a plan to correct a few chips in the paint and accomplish a minor refresh. Debra had her heart set on a deep-green exterior with a tan leather interior, a four on the floor for shifting fun, and lots of power under the hood for a strong performance
rumble. Sounds easy enough, right? Enthusiasts know, however, that trucks have a sly way of orchestrating their own future. When Doug and Debra delivered the truck to their good friends at Special Cars Only in Oldsmar, Florida, they learned that the smooth sheetmetal exterior was hiding a collection of carefully camouflaged Swiss cheese underneath. Switching to Plan B, the major revision began
by removing the body from the frame. Doug sold the powertrain, opting to replace the chassis with a custom version from TCI Engineering, complete with independent front suspension, front and rear sway bars, and a four-link rear holding a Currie 9-inch with Positraction and 3.70 gears. Power rack-and-pinion steering makes it easy for Debra to drive, QA1 coilovers keep the Cameo flat in the turns, and Wilwood brakes October 2018

HER EMERALD CAMEO ensure modern stopping power. Big brakes were an essential since Doug took Debra’s request seriously when it came to power, dropping in a Chevrolet Ram Jet V-8 boasting 502 ci and churning out a healthy 502 hp. To keep the engine room sanitary, the firewall was smoothed, a custom radiator surround was fabricated, and lots of effort went into hiding hoses and wiring. The only performance upgrades to the motor had to do with Debra’s request for “rumble,” addressed with a set of Doug’s Headers and a 3-inch mandrel-bent exhaust, barely restrained by a pair of MagnaFlow mufflers. The Tuned Port Intake, block, and PNL valve covers with Chevy logo were sprayed a high gloss tan to match the interior. Keeping everything cool in the engine room is the U.S. Radiator cross-flow aluminum radiator equipped with a pair of SPAL electric fans. In addition to a significant bump in horsepower, Doug also upped the ante on the trans, adding a five-speed TREMEC with Hurst shifter. When it came time for wheels, the choice was easy since Debra had already seen a set of U.S. Mags Mashburn rally rims at a street rod event and knew they were the ones for her. The truck rolls on 18x7 versions up front and 18x10s in the rear with Scorpion rubber getting the 40

power to the ground. Once the powertrain was complete, dozens of details were added to the body, beginning with refining the somewhat agriculturallooking bed. The long rows of visible screws were eliminated for a polished look and a pair of 2.75-inch rear tubs went in to accommodate the fat rear rubber. Traditional Oak planks cover the floor and a polished billet filler cap connects to the new No Limit Engineering tank. The rear bumper used to have a spare tirewell but it was eliminated and is now flush with
the body. On both ends of the rear bumper, subtle sheetmetal extensions were added, smoothing the transition between the body and the bumper. More touches, unnoticed until pointed out, are the rounded corners on the front doors, vent windows replaced with one-piece glass, and the cowl vent welded shut, all part of the Cameo’s subtle changes. When it came time for paint, Debra had the color locked in, having spotted an Emerald Green Corvette at the Corvette Museum in Bowling Green. She knew the dark green shade would

The team at Special Cars Only came up with a custom-mixed shade that Debra loves, adding a tan side panel that’s a perfect complement to the Dale VanCuren tan leather interior. Moving inside, seating upgrades in the Cameo began with a reupholstered later-model Chevrolet bench seat with just the right amount of room to accommodate the Hurst floor shifter. After several holes in the dash were welded shut, Vintage Air and recessed Camaro A/C vents and were added, along with Dakota Digital instruments and a repro ’56 Chevrolet wheel. Affordable Altitude Adjustment CPP’s New C10 Coilover Kits Words & Images Rob Fortier
Fifteen years ago,
“adjustable” suspension for any old truck of mine meant it went down—low—and stayed down—low. The bumpy washboard ride was to be expected, as it was part of the trade-off for getting the suspension to perform under conditions it was never intended to in the first place. And then came along all these fancy folks with their so-called “pro touring” setups in their fancy muscle cars … which eventually trickled down to the classic truck folks. Too extravagant for me; I was just fine with cut coils, bumpstops acting as standoffs, and blown-out shocks. That is ’til the day I went for a ride in one of these hightech haulers—with professional road course racer Boris Said at the wheel, pushing a 65-yearold pickup past limits many modern cars aren’t capable of—and, despite having ghost-white knuckles (with a grin ear-to-ear), my stubborn opinion was quickly changed. 44

In all honesty, I’ve always recognized and promoted the importance of good suspension components in any vehicle, old or new. Not only do they make driving much more enjoyable, they make the drives that much safer. The adjustability aspect of a fine-tuned suspension is now something we can all take advantage of when it comes to affordability—a factor that kept many of us from even considering the option in the past. And what better platform to improve upon than the ’63-’87 C10? That was Classic Performance

he 1930s brought unprecedented innovation in machineage technology and materials. Industrial designers from the auto industry translated the principals of aerodynamics and streamlining into everyday objects like radios and toasters. It was also a decade when an unequaled variety of watch cases and movements came into being. In lieu of hands to tell time, one such complication, called a jumping mechanism, utilized numerals on a disc viewed through a window. With its striking resemblance to the dashboard gauges and radio dials of the decade, the jump hour watch was indeed “in tune” with the times!

Products’ thinking when they began developing their all-new front and rear coilover kits, which are now available as complete package upgrades (featuring up to 5 inches of ride height adjustability along with dual-adjustable shocks) or individual components that can be integrated with stock control/trailing arms. As luck would have it, I stopped by CPP to check on our inaugural Week to Wicked C10 just as they were about to update the coil spring underpinnings with their new front and rear kits before heading off to Fort Worth for—appropriately enough—the C10 Nationals. If you recall, during the five-day transformation, CPP installed their Totally Tubular suspension components on the freshly shortened chassis of the ’72, which included Modular Drop spindles and Big Brake kits. So, the upgrades for this go-around centered on swapping out the lower control arms for the new coilover-specific Totally Tubular arms, modifying the frame’s coil 46

drill and an air chisel may rattle your fillings loose by the time you’re done, they seem to do the job of ridding the rivets without causing much harm to the framerail beneath, unlike a torch or plasma cutter.
05 Here’s where the job gets a bit labor intensive, and requires specific tools to accomplish. The factory-riveted upper control arm bracket must be removed entirely, and in a manner that does not damage or alter the remaining holes, as they will be reused to mount the new bracket components.
07 Once the bracket’s been freed and clear, it’s time to break out (i.e. run to the hardware store and purchase) the 3-inch bi-metal holesaw. With just the base portion of the new upper coilover bracket bolted in place, relieve the stock coil spring pocket of interfering material. (If you’re not concerned with having a perfect circle cut, by all means grab that plasma or torch if you’ve got one and have at it—just make sure to provide ample clearance for the new coilover to sit and function.) pocket to accept CPP’s upper coilover mount, and then swapping out the rear trailing arms and installing the new coilover lower brackets, the latter of which will be covered next month, along with a report on how the C10 faired in the autocross competition at Texas Motor Speedway. the installation of CPP’s rear coilover conversion kit—and reveal how the Week to Wicked C10 did on the infield autocross course at Texas Motor Speedway during the recent C10 Nationals.
16 Regardless of whether you’re using stock, dropped, new, or old spindles, when installing, safely and securely support the lower control arm as you put the coilover spring under load when attaching the upper ball joints. Grease the wheel bearings and set the preload accordingly when reinstalling the hubs.

ou ever have someone tell you how to do your job so emphatically that, eventually, you end up telling them, “If you know so much—you do it!”? It happens in every profession, and there are certain instances where maybe the other person is better suited to perform the task at hand (that seems to be a prevalent scenario with my teenaged son … but he’s learning to keep his mouth shut as the tasks multiply!). If you’re a hands-on kind of person, nobody can recount a project’s timeline better than you, right? You may not be as crafty with words as you are with power tools and the like (in which case having to fill out a tech sheet can be worse than getting all your teeth pulled—at once), so you rely on someone else to tell the story for you. But every now and then I’ll get a nice, well-written summary from an owner/builder who, in all honesty, would serve no other justice than being used as-written to properly tell the tale. And such is the case with Ken McAvoy and his Southern belle, “Scarlett.” Take it away, Ken!
“After selling my last build, an ’84 GMC Sierra, the quest for my next project began. I knew that I wanted another ’73-’87 GM but wasn’t sure what body style. I love shortbed C10s, but I also have a passion for Blazers. My primary
concern was that it had to be rust-free with very nice paint. My hope was to find a local seller, so I browsed eBay and Craigslist for weeks. “Even though I have an experienced eye for quality, the
classified ads were deceptive enough to lure me in. I looked at 13 candidates and walked away disappointed every time. The search began to widen as nearby prospects diminished. I came across an ’85 GMC Sierra

in Louisiana that appeared to have good potential. Several conversations with large text files of pics led to lengthy phone calls. The seller came across as very honest in his description and seemed familiar. I later realized that I knew the background story from the previous owner. The truck came from Meridian, Mississippi, and had been owned by an automotive painter responsible for the fresh paint. Was my quest almost over? “My wife, Lana, and I hooked up the trailer and drove across the state to have a better look. I ensured her that we would come home empty handed if it weren’t in the condition that was described. As we rolled down the street of an upscale neighborhood I saw a twotone shortbed prominently displayed in the driveway. The concrete was still wet from a fresh wash and I could smell the tire shine as I approached. I looked at my wife with a grin and she rolled her eyes. I was sold, but apparently she was not. Matt greeted me and we looked the little GMC over from top to bottom as he described her in detail. Being an experienced buyer I looked for any potentially costly problems while appraising the condition. I was pleased that there weren’t any red flags. There were plenty of minor things that needed attention, but nothing that labor and a bit of money couldn’t fix. I knew that it had been repainted and was relieved to see that a proper job had been done in prep and application. The truck was well equipped with power options that worked, the motor ran strong, and transmission shifted well. We had a winner!
“After an exchange of cash, we loaded up and headed back to Texas. I couldn’t wait to get started and spent most of our trip home planning what lay ahead. I asked Lana what we should call our latest purchase. She thought for a moment and replied, ‘With the red color and Southern heritage, I think ‘Scarlett’ is a good name.’ I concurred that was a fitting title. “We placed a call to my trusty assistant and nephew, Chris. The plans began to unfold. We would start with the bottom and work our way up. The objective was to replace or refurbish everything. We had a few short months to bring this Southern Belle back to her former beauty. “With a list in our head, the bed came off and our mission was underway. The red Mississippi clay that coated the frame was stripped clean and repainted satin black. While Chris worked on prepping the bottom of the bed for undercoating, I made repairs to the wiring harness and wrapped it in new loom. We worked on each section replacing worn items and servicing all reusable

ADVENTURES OF SCARLETT parts. From the taillights to the back of the cab, we slowly made ‘Scarlett’ look new again. Years of dirt and grease were replaced with satin paint and rubberized undercoating. The rear had been lowered with a flip kit, but we had to replace a broken U-bolt and cracked leaf in the spring pack. Dull taillights and leaking wheel cylinders were exchanged for newand-improved components. “As the rebuild process unfolded I posted on my media feed on Instagram and Facebook. I also blogged updates on www.6772chevytrucks.com in the 1973-1987 project forum. This media coverage gained a rather large following, and caught the attention of Chris Plump, a marketing rep at American Racing. We discussed the possibility of using ‘Scarlett’ in the Wheel Pro booth at the Lonestar Throwdown show. Time was short, but I agreed that we would be there on Friday morning, the opening day of the show. This was going to be serious challenge to accomplish, but Plump and I were determined to succeed. “We diligently worked our way along the bottom of the truck toward the front. The CPP dropped spindles and lowered coils were painted cast iron gray, while a set of CPP’s vented discs were combined with red Wilwood D52 dual piston calipers. A heavy-duty GM sway bar was installed to reduce body roll. With the 54

bottom of the truck done, we pulled the hood and started the process again. It was obvious this girl was a bit leaky so all the seals and gaskets were replaced. Once dry, we were able to clean and paint the motor cast iron gray. The original 305 had been replaced with an L69 305 HO with a GM midrise intake. This was topped off with a dual snorkel breather that was modified by Johnny C. An aftermarket cam was added to improve low-end power, and midlength headers send exhaust through Borla XL stainless mufflers. “Now that the motor looked like new, the factory wheeltubs needed attention. To ensure plenty of clearance for the 22-inch VF506 wheels being built, the first set of ’73-’87 Mild Tubz produced were installed. The tubs were
complemented with bead-rolled filler panels from Slosh Tubz as well. Everything was painted a matching red by Thad Rucker Designs at the Hicks Street facility. “Attention was turned to the interior as the race against the clock continued. The cabin was stripped clean and VibroSolutions insulated and lined the floor and doors with sound deadener. New weatherstrips and rebuilt vent windows from Precision Replacement Parts completed the seal. ‘Scarlett’ needed tunes, so Kicker Audio came through with a bang. A KMC 20 media center was installed in the dash with the processor hidden under the seat. Behind the factory bench seat a custom speaker box was designed to house a Kicker Hideaway 8-inch powered subwoofer and a pair of

SUPERIOR Art Ybarra’s Twice-Owned Fleetside
I
•By Derek Herring
n 1977 Art Ybarra was 18 years old and just got his first job working at the Magma copper mine in the small town of Superior, Arizona. He noticed this ’72 Fleetside beauty at a used car dealership in a less than attractive shade of green and white with a huge camper on the back. It was for sale with a $2,700 price tag and would become his first automobile purchase. For us who have this classic truck “thing” of ours, we all know that special place in our heart for the first one. In the early ’80s the family facts of life happened and he was ultimately forced to sell the truck to raise money for a house. Fortunately for him, his brother Frank accepted Art’s sales terms that would allow him to buy it back if it was ever up for sale. That day would come 26 years later, and he did buy it back, in very rough shape.
58

R C10 That didn’t matter though because this time Art had complete frame-off restoration plans for it. He started by stripping it all down to the frame and began distributing parts to pro-strip media blasting and Arizona powdercoating companies. The frame came back first and he got busy installing 2.5-inch dropped spindles, 2-inch lowered springs, and factory 12-inch disc brakes. In the rear, Art installed a 2-inch C-notch and 5-inch lowered springs. The truck had a factory 12-bolt with a 3:73 differential so he had Ernie Kapfer of Ernie’s Automotive refresh it. Staggered size Ridler 695 wheels were chosen in the corners; 18x8s with Nitto 245/45 tires in the front. October 2018

SUPERIOR C10 That is also the premise for the expertly applied House of Kolor Candy Brandywine paint. The paint and finish work on his truck is outstanding! Art wisely enlisted the talented team of Art and Daniel Widmer to create a metal masterpiece. The significance of painstaking bodywork, preparation, and the experience of a skilled painter are essential in creating a mirror-like finish of this caliber. That’s especially true when working with dark candy colors, and these guys did an incredible job. Their work extends into the bed as they shaved the stake pockets and then gave the sidewalls and fenderwells a touch of candy as well. The steel floor was treated with a carefully tinted, matching bedliner paint that makes the bed fit for a king and the part that stands out most to Art. It was awarded a Coolest Paint recognition by Patrick Peterson of the Arizona Cardinals at a local car show in the first eight months since restoration. Inside the cab, Dominic Domingues worked his magic to craft a custom interior that complements the paint perfectly, featuring a light tan bench seat with a custom-stitched pattern, matching steering wheel, and dashpad combination. The door panels, while factory issued, are covered with matching perforated material and a custom trim piece that gives them a unique flair. The painted areas on the inside are just as flawless as the outside panels, and are highlighted by chrome ididit tilt column and billet trim accents. A Classic Instruments All American series gauge cluster replaces the originals in the factory dash pod and bezel. Art installed conditioned air courtesy of Vintage Air to provide vital summer cruising comfort. It’s certainly worth mentioning that Art takes pride in doing most of the work himself, but would like to thank all of the people who helped him over the 31⁄2 years to build it, particularly his brother and coworkers. He received many compliments on his truck, but the best of which is knowing he wouldn’t change a thing. He loves that it turned out exactly how he imagined it to be. 62

The Bump Stops Here Better Suspension For Classic Trucks

There is no question
that pickups from the ’50s are some of the best-looking trucks ever made. But while the styling was inspired, the suspension certainly was not. Basically one step up from the ride and handling qualities of a Conestoga wagon, trucks like the F-100, shown here, were designed to be utilitarian vehicles. As a result, the passengers felt most bumps, and road manners were not the primary consideration. Over the years a variety of methods have been used to civilize the shortcomings of trucks originally equipped with solid axles up front. Everything from grafting on subframes to custom independent suspensions have been tried, but without a doubt the most successful method has been the installation of a Mustang II–based kit. They’re affordable, easy to install, and they work extremely well. Although the lineage of the Mustang II can be traced to the ill-fated 64

Pinto, the truth is the front suspension was the best feature of those cars. And while some continue to question the suitability of using components from such a lightweight vehicle, the facts are the Mustang II has larger wheel bearings than the Chevy Nova clips that were once popular. and it’s hard to find fault with a Mustang II suspension system. Over the years one of the leaders in the refinement of Mustang II kits has been Brent VanDervort. His company, Fatman Fabrications, has developed kits for a wide variety of vehicles and custom applications. Tread widths vary depending on the application and come with the appropriate rack-and-pinion to eliminate any possibility of bumpsteer. hen you’re attending a major car show with 1,500 hot rods parked in all directions, it’s hard to stand out, no matter how crazy the creation. But sometimes size really does matter if you want to grab some attention, especially at über-sized automotive events. Just ask Mike Suchonic and he’ll confirm that fact straight up! Here on these pages is Mike’s stellar ’52 Chevy COE. It’s an amalgamation of several-year models and their key ingredients all bundled together into one jumbo-sized 24-foot-plus some workingman’s rig that just screams “check me
out, I’m all that and then some!” Not only is Mike’s COE a big serving of diesel chuggin’ eye candy, but it’s also a service truck, racking up the miles as an effective long-distance car hauler. But what’s not evident to the naked eye is that this hybrid truck is much more than it appears to be at first glance. Turns out this trick truck is riding on a more modern ’86 C30 Chevy dually chassis under its vintage exoskeleton. Mike took the best parts of several vehicles and melded them together into one cohesive ride that not only hauls butt but also looks good doing it. 72

Let’s see how it all came together. Ramping Up Mike was still drag racing at the time he purchased the ’52, so from the start the goal was to make a ramp truck that could be driven anytime, anywhere. He had a good starting point since he was already working with a more up-to-date chassis. However, to fund this new project Mike decided to sell his racer, which turns out didn’t bother him one bit. His goal was to build the baddest COE in existence. Game on! Mike was originally going to build his own bed but soon found a usable October 2018

73
SEND IT COD (CAB OVER DIESEL) ’71 Chevy C30 ramp truck locally. It was originally from New England, which meant plenty of rust, but Mike saw through the corrosion and figured it would be perfect for his project. He removed the ramp bed, determined the wheelbase he needed to install it on his chassis, and then sent it out to Zimm-o-matic in nearby Denver, Pennsylvania, to have it stretched the needed 45 inches to fit. While that was happening, Mike decided on the motorvation for this ride. Being familiar with 7.3 Powerstroke Diesels, he decided that this would be the perfect engine for this build. He purchased a low-mileage ’97 Ford 350 box truck, pulled its heart out and salvaged anything that could be used on his COE.
By the time this was finished, the chassis was back from Zimm-o-matic. First task was getting the steering to line up. This was an issue because the steering column was so far forward on the COE. This was resolved by using a 1986 Chevy G30 van steering box and an ididit column, and by pointing 74

the Pitman arm straight down and the input shaft straight up. This allowed the steering shaft angles to be in tolerance. The suspension was the next issue to tackle. Mike removed the front springs and replaced them with Airlift bags. The rear chassis was notched and boxed with 1⁄4 steel plate to fit the Firestone airbags over the rear axle. Next the back of the chassis was extended and a hitch was added. A four-link suspension was installed next with heavy-duty 1.5-inchdiameter bars, and a Panhard bar was installed on the Dana 70 (stuffed with 4.10 gears) out back. All needed parts were fabricated by Mike himself and
installed with the help of good friend Todd Cassler of Flames Unlimited. Next Mike tackled the engine installation. The Powerstroke would not fit under the cab so he made room for it under the bed. Custom crossmembers were made for the engine and transmission so they could be removed from under the truck, if needed. The engine is mostly stock, with an intercooler, 3.5-inch custom turbo downpipe, and a 4-inch MagnaFlow exhaust added. The radiator, air conditioning condenser, and the intercooler are all positioned behind the cab. Fresh air is ducted from the front grille opening through the bay and underneath the cab to

these pieces. Two custom gas tanks hold a massive 54 gallons of go-juice, so the miles rack up in-between fuel stops. When melding the pieces from several-year trucks, Mike realized some did not go along with the game plan. That included the square sleeper from the ’71. That was scrapped and the bed was extended another 3 feet to make it more useful. All-new brackets were fabricated by the owner to hold the bed to the chassis of the truck. Zimm-o-matic replaced the doors on the ramp, fabricating new ones that included hidden hinges for a cleaner look. A Superwinch was installed out of sight in the ramp floor as well for pulling power. The cab was kept stock, except for the inclusion of an original aluminum Fulton sunvisor and a custom side mirror and brackets with stainless steel arms polished by Bob Vasquez of Alternative Chrome. The ramp bed, cabinet doors, and chassis were powdercoated by Blue Lake Powder Coating. Grille, bumper, and hood hinges were chrome plated by Librandi Chrome for a little “bling.” The entire rig was disassembled before final paint. The cab was media-blasted before Mike handled the bodywork. Todd Cassler of Flames Unlimited painted the cab, fenders, steps, and other pertinent parts. Mike handled the assembly to get this rig back into shape. Mike built his own engine wiring harness because he couldn’t locate a new one for the Powerstroke Diesel. He started with a donor harness from the Ford box truck and traced every wire 76

himself. He simplified the setup and ended up with just one fuse box. Even the cruise control now works with his setup. To control the lights, he used a separate Rebel Wiring harness. The suspension consists of an Oasis air compressor, two 12-gallon tanks, 1⁄2-inch valves, and air lines. The compressor is mounted under the hood along with one of the batteries. The other battery is along the driver side step and the tanks are mounted underneath the ramp. Braking is run by a Ford master/booster pushing rear drums and Chevy C30 front discs. As far as the cockpit goes, Billy Reed of K&S Auto Interiors handled many of the duties. He covered the original seat and headliner with tuck ’n’ roll upholstery. He also designed and fabricated full door panels with the same tuck ’n’ roll motif. Mike jumped in and installed New Vintage USA quad and speedometer gauges in the dash and fabricated the custom gauge panel that sits below it. A custom-built cup holder handles Mike’s Cup of Joe on long trips. Climate control is through Vintage Air and tunes are controlled by a Custom Autosound system. COD Delivered! It’s no surprise, since he had his hands in the build from the start. The four-plus years of hard work and long hours paid off and he feels it was well worth the investment of time and money. “It drives like a modern vehicle and so far has hauled or towed anything I wanted,” Mike says. Special thanks go out to Todd Cassler and anyone who has listened to his crazy ideas, especially girlfriend Missy McMonagle who also put up with his extended garage hours!

PROFESSOR HAMMER’S by Ron Covell
covell@cruzio.com
Q. I have some questions about using hammers and dollies. If I understand correctly, if a dent is low, you hammer off-dolly to bring it up, hammering “around” the dent with the dolly pushing up on the low spot. On the other hand, you hammer on-dolly to bring down a high spot, with dolly held directly under the hammer blows. It seems like high and low are relative, depending on your perspective. If a dent is pushed toward the inside of a fender, it’s a low spot. If it is pushed toward the outside, it’s a high spot. Why can’t I consider all dents as high spots, and always hammer on-dolly? The fender won’t know the difference, I won’t tell anybody, and I’ll never have to hammer off-dolly again, right? It seems like this should not cause more stretching, or require any more going back-and-forth than any other method, as long as I go slowly and use light blows. It may sound like I’m being silly, but I honestly don’t see why this wouldn’t work. I have removed dents from a lot of sheetmetal by taking it out to my lawn and knocking the high spot down, whether it’s on the inside or outside of the part. The matted grass and forgiving soil gives the perfect backing so I don’t overdo it, and prevents stretching, which would happen from smashing the metal between two solid surfaces. Ken Law
Scottsdale, AZ
A. A lot of people are confused about the difference between on- and off-dolly hammering. Let’s start with hammer on-dolly, which stretches the metal. If you take any crowned panel and hammer on-dolly on any area, compressing the metal between the hammer and dolly, that area will bulge MORE in the direction the panel was already headed. This is true regardless of which side of the panel you are looking at or hammering on. When you hammer off-dolly, the area the hammer touches goes down (or moves in the direction of the hammering). If the dolly is held close to the hammer, and pushed hard against the metal, the part the dolly is touching will move in
METALWORKING TIPS
Hammer and dolly work can be a bit tricky to understand, which makes controllable dent removal challenging for most people. This month we’ll start with the unique perspective of one of our readers, leading to an in-depth description of the different ways you can use these deceptively simple tools to get the results you want.
the direction OPPOSITE the direction of hammering. (Note that the distance between the contact points has to be 1 inch or less to get the benefit from the rebounding action of the dolly.) Again, this is true regardless of which side of the panel you are looking at, or hammering on. One point of confusion is that in certain cases, you can have the dolly directly beneath the hammer, and still be hammering off-dolly. This occurs when you use a low-crown dolly under a high-crown dent. The key is whether there is an air gap between the dolly and the metal (which would be off-dolly), or if the hammer blow is compressing the sheetmetal between them (which would be on-dolly). I have a YouTube video that shows this process in good detail. Go to YouTube and type “Covell Grille” in the search box. Select my Slicing and Dicing video, and you’ll see a clear demonstration of how the hammer ondolly technique can raise low spots with precision. I have never heard of anyone using a lawn to back up metal while hammering, but I have used carpet on occasion, which works in a similar manner. There is no question that a soft backing (whether carpet or lawn) will reduce the amount of stretching you get when hammering against the backing, compared with the result of hammering on a hard backing. It is worth mentioning that you certainly can stretch metal by hammering it against a soft backing, and this is why a mallet and sandbag is often used to do rough shaping on panels. I hope this helps, and contact me again if you have more questions!
