GOING DOW N ur five-man crew grabbed an opportunity for a few precious hours of early morning fishing before hitting the to-do lists in our lives. Even though it was cool and overcast, the sea was slick calm. Relaxing. At least until we heard the VHF radio crackle: “Mayday! Mayday! Mayday!” A 52-foot cruiser to our east had struck a submerged object and was taking on water in rapid fashion. The captain calmly told the U.S. Coast Guard: “We hit something. Broke the shaft. There’s about 10 inches of water in the engine room and rising fast.” He was about 15 minutes away. I looked at our boat’s owner, Tom. We nodded, pulled in our lines and beelined it to the sinking vessel. Tom communicated to the captain that we were en route. The Coast Guard dispatched a nearby boat. I didn’t see any of the other vessels around us, about a dozen, respond. Perhaps they weren’t monitoring Channel 16 or they just didn’t hear the call. During our run, the captain of the stricken cruiser noted that he did not have a life raft

on board. He had an EPIRB but hadn’t activated it. The Coast Guard instructed him to do so. By the time we arrived, a Coast Guard vessel was approaching. There were also two Sea Tow boats, a bay constable boat, a New York Police Department helicopter and several other recreational boats. It was great to see the massive, and fast, response. We stayed on station until the Coast Guard engaged with the boat. Surrounded by a parade of vessels with flashing lights, we watched as the cruiser, listing hard, limped toward the inlet on its working motor. Later, we were told the crew had managed to get the vessel back to port. It was fantastic news, but it also left me thinking: Why didn’t those other vessels near us respond? Why didn’t this captain keep a life raft on board? Had his boat been farther offshore, this tale could have ended much differently. When I got my captain’s license, my dad said: “People don’t pay you to take them out. Anyone can do that. They pay you to bring them home.” Sage advice. Be prepared, always.

A DESIGN EVOLUTION
The Alaskan 66 Mark II has more interior volume than her forebears.
THE COMEBACK Alaskan Yachts stopped building boats in 2012. If all goes according to plan, a redesigned Alaskan Yachts 66 will hit the docks in 2020. By Kim Kavin
n a sunday afternoon in the late 1980s, yacht designer Steve Seaton climbed over a fence to break into a San Diego boatyard. A 66-foot wooden trawler was out of the water there, a boat that his icon, Art DeFever, had designed. Seaton walked beneath the port side, admiring the hull, failing to realize that somebody else was to starboard. ¶ “We came around the corner, at the tail end of the keel, at the same moment,” Seaton recalls. “We looked at each

other and he said, ‘What are you doing here?’ I didn’t know who it was. He said, ‘What are you doing here?’ I said, ‘I’m studying this Art DeFever boat. I’m a big fan of his.’ And he said, ‘What’s your name?’ And I said, ‘Steve Seaton.’ And he said, ‘I know you! I’m Art DeFever.’ Well I stood up straight — I’m ex-military, and I wanted to show him how much I respected him. And I hit my head on the boat.” ¶ DeFever was beloved in offshore cruising circles. By some estimates, more than 3,800 boats were built

to his designs before he died in 2013. Among them were the original Alaskan yachts in the 1960s. ¶ The last Alaskan was finished in 2012, and the brand has been idle since. Now Peter Whiting, principal at Seattle Northwest Yachts, has bought Alaskan Yachts with the intent to resurrect it. ¶ He hired Phil Friedman, former CEO of Palmer Johnson, as new-build manager, and he tapped Seaton to draw the Alaskan 66 Mark II, the first model in an updated line. The Aquila 36 has two staterooms, one in each hull. The berths are tucked into the bows with windows to one side and an opening hatch overhead for natural light and fresh air. The en suite heads also have windows with opening hatches. And because the heads are amidships, they act as a sound barrier between the sleeping areas and the engines.
The Aquila 36 aims to put big-boat comfort in a midsize footprint. By Chris Caswell
hen marinemax approached the Sino Eagle Group, a Chinese boatbuilder, to create the Aquila series of power cats, the yacht sales firm had two goals: The first was to flesh out its MarineMax Vacations bareboat charter fleet in the British Virgin Islands, and the second was to create yachts suitable for private ownership. ¶ Those are, in several ways, seemingly contradictory needs. Charter yachts need to be bulletproof: easy to maintain, easy to repair, easy to use. Private yachts, on the other hand, must be whatever their owners want them to be, even if using them takes a little extra maintenance now and then. ¶ To satisfy both types of boaters, the Aquila line was created, first with a 48-footer and then with a 44-footer. The Aquila 36 is a departure from her sisterships in that she is an outboard-powered, express-cruiser-style catamaran, but she also adheres to MarineMax’s philosophies. ¶ With a single main living level from bow to stern and a beam of 14 feet 7 inches, the Aquila 36 is like a bowrider on steroids. She has seating that can handle 20 adults for outings and barbecues, and there are two

time, he was a cycling junkie, riding everything from mountain bikes to racing bikes. For years, the two streams of thought were banging around, and into, each other in his mind. ¶ “The idea has been floating around in my head for a while,” he says. “Having a bike to ride on water was pretty obvious, but I’ve always been fascinated by how foils work on boats, how they lift the boats out of the water.” ¶ About a half-dozen years ago, he went to a

1 conference where a motivational speaker challenged participants to make their ideas a reality. So, he finally did. ¶ He enlisted a full-time designer, a fearless test rider and an engineer with simulation software to develop foiling-bike prototypes — seven, in all — ultimately creating the version that is in preorder now. Howard-Willis and his team were having molds built this summer, with the first units expected to ship in New Zealand by the end of this year. The first Manta5 Hydrofoiler XE-1 bikes bound for U.S. shores are due to arrive in early 2019, at a retail price of $6,895. ¶ “We’ve had yacht owners call,” he says. “There’s a captain from Florida who looks after a few yachts. He said, ‘Send them down. Every yacht owner is going to want a few of these. It’s almost like an adventure cycling sport.’” ¶ Some 30,000 people have registered for information on the company’s website, and Howard-Willis says 40 percent of them are Americans. He’s now thinking about ways to give them all what they want beyond the base model, be it a racing version or one that can surf down waves. ¶ “If you look at that progression of how cycling has gotten faster with all kinds of bikes, I think our bike is really just the beginning of a whole new industry, a whole new sport,” he says. “That’s the exciting part for me. FIELDS OF GOLD Where bright-yellow canola crops bring seaside scenery to life. By Kim Kavin
very island promotes its views as the absolute best, but yachtsmen who visit Canada’s Prince Edward Island can see colors that are hard to find elsewhere, even during a lifetime of cruising. ¶ The shades of yellow that dominate PEI’s canola fields have been called everything from golden to buttery. They pop against the rich blue waters every year by about late July — prime cruising season with water temperatures that, tourism officials swear, are the warmest north of the Carolinas. ¶ The number of fields seeded varies from year to year, with around 700 acres of canola being planted across PEI. They’re

just a fraction of the overall production throughout Canada, where 22.8 million acres made canola the nation’s top crop (dethroning wheat) in 2017. Farmers are cashing in not only on consumer demand for products such as canola oil, but also on the crop’s use in biodiesel. ¶ The result is seen pretty much everywhere on PEI, including in many restaurants that welcome transient boaters to the capital city of Charlottetown. The Charlottetown Marina books slips for yachts up to about 60 feet length overall at per-night and per-week rates, and co-owner Conner Reid says the on-site restaurant, Steamers Boat House, cooks its french fries,
MAGNIFICENT MOLLUSKS
Prince Edward Island is known for its oysters, mussels and clams. About 130 PEI growers produced about 41 million pounds of mussels in 2017. That’s a major industry looking to protect the haul, so yachtsmen are required to respect fisheries’ rules, which are posted online.

fried clams, fish and chips, and more in — you guessed it — canola oil. Or patrons can order a bucket of mussels (and skip the accompanying bucket of beer) if they want to eat on the healthier side. ¶ Reid also owns Peakes Quay Marina in Charlottetown and has transient slips there for yachts up to about 60 feet too. Reservations are ideal, especially during the summer, but he says that even last-minute arrivals can get lucky. ¶ “If we don’t have space, we call the yacht club and they try to help,” he says. “It’s a small community. You’re traveling on a boat, and there are only a few options for people staying on a boat, so we work hard to accommodate them.”

PERSHING 9X
The Pershings are the ultimate lush They are 40-plus-knot performance delivered with rooster-tail ostentation. They’re for blasting over to the best spot for lunch ahead of the pack. For going a bit farther, faster, to reach the best diving. For being the last yacht to leave the bay on a Sunday evening and still getting back to the dock first. ¶ And the Italian builder’s 9x is pure Pershing. A pair of 2,638 hp 16V 2000 M96L MTUs hooked up to Top System surface drives deliver massive punch and a plume that can top 30 feet. Pershing says the maximum speed for this 92-footer is 42 knots, although during our test off La Spezia, Italy, we managed a knot more at something approaching half-load: 11 people, onethird fuel, one-half fresh water, and empty black and gray tanks, but a full garage. Conditions were close to perfect, with still air and flat-calm seas that we couldn’t wait to tear up. The only imperfection was an outside air temperature of 52 degrees Fahrenheit, which, with a backdrop of snow-capped Apennine Mountains, probably seemed more brisk than our reality. Certainly if you were outside when she was wound up, you noticed the wind chill, but thankfully her interior was a constant 66 degrees F, so I can vouch for the heating system, although I would rather not make a habit of it. I’m British and prefer yachting weather to be like my tea: hot. ¶ Handling is as fun as I can imagine with 165,000 pounds or so of yacht. She feels every bit as precise as smaller

Pershing models, running on a hull developed from Pershing’s 92, which in turn evolved from the 90 and 88. ¶ Must-have options, based on my time aboard, include twin Seakeeper 9 gyrostabilizers for comfort at anchor, and a Xenta electro-hydraulic joystick control system for close-quarters maneuvering. At speeds faster than 8 knots, skippers can cruise the yacht using the joystick, a trick that I found immensely satisfying in the big seats down below as well as on the flybridge. Altering course required nothing more than a slight twist of my thumb and index finger. ¶ At a 38-knot cruise, our 9x’s motors were turning 2,250 rpm and burning 110 gallons per engine, which, allowing for a 10 percent reserve, equates to a range of almost 370 nautical miles. At full chat, those diesels are sucking up 2.2 gallons per minute, or 6.3 gallons per nautical mile. Setting the throttles to bumble, which I deem to be around 750 rpm, sees the 9x settle into a 10-knot cruise for around 900 nautical miles. ¶ Pershing interiors are crisp, reflecting youthful tastes. Our test yacht, Najati, fused a satin-gloss ebony and whitened oak sole, along with furnishings from Poltrona Frau and cushions by Fendi Casa. I was convinced that some of the cupboards were sheathed in snakeskin or exotic printed leather, until I realized the material was a silvery fabric. It’s a nice vibe. ¶ Owners can choose a three- or four-stateroom layout. Najati has the master amidships, the VIP forward with a diagonal berth, and two guest staterooms in between (their berths can convert from twins to doubles). The companionway belowdecks is off-center, which means the starboard stateroom is a little beamier than the one to port. ¶ The chaise longue in the owners’ stateroom is the biggest touch point on

COMING SOON: SUPER PERSHINGS The first Pershing 140 is under construction at the Ferretti Group’s facilities in Ancona, Italy. As with all Pershings since 1985, Fulvio de Simoni designed this new flagship, which has a snub nose. The 140 is also the first all-aluminum Pershing, the first to have a raised pilothouse, and the longest hull to date, besting her next-closest sistership by 25 feet. Features will include a beach club with three fold-down sides, and a covered hot tub on the foredeck. ¶ Fabrication began in early 2017, and Hull No. 1 is expected to launch by September, when she’ll be delivered to Asia as Chorus Line. She has the more powerful of two propulsion options: four MTU 16V 2000 M96Ls and four Marine Jet Power water jets, with a projected maximum speed around 40 knots. ¶ Pershing recently released renderings of an even bigger trideck design, the 170, which would combine aluminum and carbon fiber in its construction. The builder says that a few clients are interested, and that a second Pershing 140 is scheduled for delivery in late 2019.

however, I’ve made an uneasy truce with the malady, learning to live with it rather than fight it, while cursing those who are immune. BACK IN THE USSR Coal and mining run through the fabric of Svalbard like an obsidian thread. Mines have opened and closed as the world fought wars, endured depressions and undertook revolutions. Coal mining is thankless, dangerous work even under the best of circumstances, and the Arctic serves up anything but favorable conditions. Most of the coal seams in Svalbard border on the edge of profitability, and many are relatively thin, which means much of the coal needs to be dug by hand. ¶ Located adjacent to the Nordenskiöldbreen glacier, the Russian coal mine of Pyramiden was established prior to World War II. The original buildings were little more than log cabins, some of which still stand. The mine was productive; however, the fjord is frozen for much of the year, making it difficult and costly to ship coal. That challenge, along with the dissolution of the Soviet Union, spelled the mine’s demise. The last workers and their families bid it farewell in 1998. ¶ Today, piles of once-productive machinery, conveyors and cranes are rusting into oblivion, surrounded by imagery of hammers, sickles, red stars and other Soviet imagery. The place is an explorable, Soviet-era ghost town where former workers’ apartments serve as a hotel.

POL AR ADVENTURE
FROM THE LOGBOOK
Virgohamna, North Danskøya, 79°43N latitude is enveloped in fog. We drop anchor 200 yards from a tiny, rocky island. Special permission, which we have, must be obtained to visit this site because it’s rich with archaeological remnants from two historic North Pole expeditions: Salomon August Andrée’s Swedish 1896-97 balloon, and Walter Wellman’s 1906, ’07 and ’09 U.S. zeppelin launches. Andrée and his fellow balloonists crashed here and managed to make it to one of Svalbard’s far northeastern islands, Kvitøya, where they perished, it is believed, from eating undercooked, trichinosis-infected polar bear meat. ¶ As a boy, I was enthralled reading about Andrée’s expedition, learning how his team made hydrogen for the balloon on-site by pouring sulfuric acid onto iron filings. On this day, I walk amid these very filings and the remains of the ceramic “still” used to make the lighterthan-air gas used for the ill-fated balloon.

Waves broke in Ny-Ålesund, we establish a wayover Migration’s bow and pelted point and begin our trek north. Six the windscreen. Now, in the lee of hours later, we are in what British Svalbard’s Vesle Svartkuven pen- explorer Henry Worsley called “the insula, conditions have improved, milk.” In all directions, a pewter sky but there’s no doubt that we are meets a slate-gray sea. We’ve gone
off the chart, literally; on our present heading, save the ice, there’s nothing between us and Alaska except the pole. The magnetic compass reads 335 degrees, while the true heading is 44 degrees — a variation of a staggering 69 degrees, a function of our proximity to the magnetic north, rather than geographic, pole. ¶ Eleven hours after getting underway, I’m beginning to wonder if this was worth it. We are eating up valuable time around the archipelago to see mile after mile of featureless sea surface. ¶ Then we begin to encounter ice. While ice is nothing new for Migration (she’s cruised amid it in Newfoundland, Greenland and Iceland), this is the polar ice cap. As the ice becomes thicker, we find ourselves changing course to search for leads that will take us north. Finally, after 13 hours, we reach a point where it’s deemed too risky to go on; getting beset in the ice isn’t the kind of Shackleton-esque adventure we’re in search of. ¶ I snap a photo of the GPS, 81°27.7, for proof. We are just 500 nautical miles from the pole. ¶ We drop the anchor onto an ice floe, launch the drone for some aerial photos, take a group shot on the foredeck (because it’s that much farther north) and then turn our bow southward. ¶ To the best of my knowledge, we are now the record holders for the farthest north production motoryacht voyage.
S VA L B A R D Svalbard, Norwegian for “cold coast” or “cold shores,” is also known by its former Dutch name, Spitzbergen, which also is an apt title, meaning “sharp mountains” or “pointed mountains.” The archipelago is roughly midway between Norway and the North Pole. Other than tourist charters, we encountered no other cruising vessels during our visit. Svalbard belongs to and is administered by Norway, although other countries are permitted to, and have, established settlements and commercial concerns here. No visa is needed to visit, and anyone can work without permits. Technically, while part of Norway, Svalbard is not part of the European Union.

with all due respect to the world’s great boat shows large and small, the Palm Beach International Boat Show is currently my favorite. It’s manageably sized, is stress-free to get around and has easy access to good restaurants. But attending is always a bittersweet affair for me because Palm Beach heralds the end of boat-show season. However this year, as the show wound down, there was light at the end of the tunnel. It took the form of the Kadey-Krogen 50 Open. ¶
Kadey-Krogen vice president and partner Larry Polster invited me to help him deliver the 50 from West Palm Beach to Stuart, Florida, after the show. I’d first gotten aboard at the Miami International Boat Show a month earlier, and based on what I’d seen, my answer was an enthusiastic yes. ¶ The yacht’s open, uncluttered main deck puts the helm, salon and galley all on one level — as opposed to the more traditional pilothouse design seen on most trawlers. “It’s the only

They help give the captain near-360-degree views from the helm, which is up one step with a Llebroc helm chair, a 29-inch-wide cherry wheel and the owner’s choice of electronics. Polster opted for twin 22-inch Garmin screens, as well as an ABT-Trac stabilizer joystick. Aboard an owneroperator yacht destined for farflung ports of call, the engine room is key. The 50 Open has a 230 hp John Deere diesel with a foot of walk-around space encircling it (twin 125 hp John Deere engines are available). There’s also a hydraulic get-home engine in the sole that runs off the 16.5 kW Northern Lights generator, moving the hull at 5 knots. A portside air-conditioning system keeps the space cool, while 7 feet of headroom makes stand-up maintenance work a reality. to port for keeping the captain company, and a watertight door to starboard accesses a Portuguese bridge with wing stations on both sides for docking. Polster’s wing stations also have Garmin screens, ZF controls and access to the stabilizer system. ¶ From there, the 25-inch-wide side decks lead aft to the cockpit, and the Portuguese bridge has a door that leads to the yacht’s foredeck, which is girded by beefy 2-inch-wide bow rails. The bow has a Maxwell 2500 stainless-steel windlass and a settee for two to optimize time on the hook. ¶ Once I had a good working knowledge of the yacht, Polster and I pulled lines and made for the inlet. We poked along the Intracoastal Waterway at a steady 1,800 rpm and 8 knots. At that speed, the 50 has a range of 2,100 nautical miles — leggy enough to get us from West Palm Beach all the way up to about Halifax, Nova Scotia, on one tank of fuel, had we desired. ¶ Once we got outside protected waters, the boat performed admirably in the rolling and confused 3s and 4s. The hull has soft chines and a curved after end, much like
the characteristics of a sailboat built for cruising. The result is an efficient hull form that provided a gentle landing into the troughs of even the largest swells we came across, perhaps the odd 5-footer. A pod of dolphins lazed in our wake a good way up the coast, enjoying the free ride on a perfectly fine South Florida day. ¶ We entered the Port St. Lucie Inlet in a rousing following sea, conditions Polster likes. He wanted me to see how the boat performed on what he dubbed “the magic carpet ride,” and after experiencing it, I can see why. The 50 Open surfed cleanly and surely down the faces of the swells, with nothing but a straight white line of bubbles trailing behind. ¶ As the marina in Stuart came into view, I couldn’t help but be a little bummed out that I was down to the last dreg of my boat-show season. PRESTIGE 520
the prestige 520 has big shoes to fill. She’s the model expected to replace the Prestige 500/500 S, a market leader for seven years with more than 450 hulls delivered. Most builders in Prestige’s situation would do little more than a facelift. A tweak here and a tweak there. Why mess with success? ¶ To my surprise, the French builder did a whole lot more than tweak. To create the 520’s profile, Garroni Design (which also penned the interior) used 50 percent more glazing than Prestige had on the 500. The side windows extend nearly down to deck level at one point, 3 feet 7 inches from top to bottom on the inside, and there are hullside windows and a transom window. On the outside, all of that side glass is flush, so from a little ways off, each side looks like it’s built with one big pane. BIG SIS
The 520 follows the builder’s previous launch, the 680 S. That yacht found a balance between the motoryacht and express crusier genres. Prestige designed a flybridge with guest space and made sure it did not detract from the vessel’s lines.

I’ve been banging on about silly seats for years. None of us sit for fun with straight backs, and knees and ankles together, the way smaller cushions assume that we will. I sprawl. You sprawl. We all sprawl. This sofa’s design allows for comfort. ¶ A glass sliding side-deck door is to starboard abaft the lower helm. uring his crew’s first northwest passage attempt in 1994, a massive closing ice pack threatened Roger Swanson’s plans. He tied up behind a grounded ice floe to protect himself and all souls aboard, but for three or four days, things were looking pretty grim. Then the wind shifted, and they escaped through 5 miles of passable, but somewhat concentrated, ice. ¶ Swanson returned twice more aboard Cloud Nine, his 1975 Bowman 57 cutter-rigged ketch, and — in 2007 — became the first person to skipper an American-flagged boat east to west through the Northwest Passage. He completed that bold journey using basic electronics, relying on hard-earned skills acquired over 217,928 nautical miles, including three circumnavigations, three Cape Horn roundings, and multiple Arctic and Antarctic “cruises.” ¶ Maritime history is rife with accounts of explorers

like Swanson braving high-latitude elements using equal parts skill, experience, persistence and patience. Fortunately, modern mariners have electronic tools that — while no substitute for seamanship and sturdy vessel construction — provide increased situational awareness and bolster good decision-making. ¶ One such technology is Furuno’s FICE-100 Ice Detecting Radar, designed to help captains find the best route through pack ice, mitigating risk and potentially saving time, fuel and even lives. ¶ Unlike navigation radars, which detect vessels, objects and landmasses to help prevent collisions, the FICE-100 is a secondary processor, a kind of downstream black box. It takes the raw feed from a Furuno X-band radar’s automatic radar plotting aid (ARPA) processor to create detailed composite, or, in Furuno’s parlance, “fusion,” images of the surrounding pack ice. ¶ FICE-100 modules ($40,000) can be networked to any compatible Furuno X-band radar ($11,000 to $40,000) via Ethernet and then connected to a dedicated or shared display. ¶ Matt Wood, Furuno USA’s national sales manager, says that in cruising grounds such as Scandinavia, wintertime navigation is usually only possible with ice-breaking
EYEING ICEBERGS
While Furuno’s FICE-100 can’t leverage its networked radar’s ARPA capabilities to acquire and track icebergs, the radar can be networked with compatible FLIR thermal-imaging cameras to provide target video tracking. This slew-to-cue functionality allows a radar to tell a camera where to point its lens in order to track one or more targets. “The FICE-100 and an X-band radar can drive the cameras,” says Furuno’s Matt Wood, adding, “We have done a lot of separate development with FLIR.”
vessels. “Open trails can be navigated without an icebreaker, but they’re not readily apparent to a navigation radar or the naked eye,” he says. “You need a radar with advanced signal processing to find the breaks.” ¶ By employing advanced algorithms and concentrating on the returning echoes from the lower portion of the radar’s transmitted vertical beam, the FICE-100 lowers the signal’s noise floor to capture fine details in the returns (imagine an ultra-powerful, downward-looking “bird mode” feature). ¶ “Ice radar wants to magnify clutter,” Wood says. “Navigation radars use a few
sweeps to paint a picture, but the FICE100 uses a composite of sweeps, tiling or layering one on top of the other, to [determine] what’s solid ice and what’s open water.” ¶ Users select the number of sweeps — from one to 100 — that the FICE-100 uses to create its composite imagery, and older sweeps fall off the composite image as newer sweeps are gathered. Given that Furuno X-band radars operate at 24 rpm, a FICE-100 takes four minutes and 16 seconds to create a 100-sweep composite radar image. That amount of time is also the longest shelf life of any individual sweep, and the unit updates its imagery every 2.5 seconds. ¶ While the FICE-100 was designed for commercial vessels, it also works for go-everywhere yacht owners. The FICE-100 can share its imagery with a Furuno TZtouch2 multifunction display or a black-box processor. Furuno’s X-band radars can also be networked to the same MFDs and black boxes, allowing users to dedicate screens on a glass bridge for navigation and ice-radar views. ¶ Unlike navigation radars that can provide ranges approaching the triple-digit mark, the FICE-100 delivers a range of 3 to 6 nautical miles. ¶ “For the purposes of navigation, the FICE-100 is focused on finding an open pathway through the ice,” Wood says, adding that most vessels in such conditions operate at speeds of 0.5 to 5 knots, making the job one of threading needles, not dodging bullets. “We’re not looking for ice at 96 nautical miles.” ¶ Likewise, since tracking other vessels isn’t the FICE-100’s mission, it can’t leverage the main radar’s ARPA functionality to track individual icebergs. However, users can designate those objects as targets on their main navigational radar or track them via a networked camera system (see “Eyeing Icebergs,” above). ¶ “A savvy navigator is looking

back and forth between navigation and ice-radar screens,” Wood says, “and when he sees [an iceberg], he’ll track it with the nav radar.” ¶ A FICE-100 operates independently of — and without compromising or influencing — the main navigation radar’s processor, allowing navigators to find old tracks through the ice, saving time and fuel. ¶ Looking to the future, Furuno is working on its next-generation ice-radar technology, which, Wood says, will deliver ice-ranging and ice-thickness information. The company is also developing radar/sonar technology that looks for ice above and below the waterline and determines the thickness of submerged ice. ¶ “The challenge is imaging it all in real time, as it takes a huge amount of video processor [capability],” Wood says. “It’s going to require something like James

with other ice-routing technologies such as thermal-imaging cameras. Current FICE-100-equipped vessels include the U.S. Coast Guard’s Healy and Polar Star icebreakers, as well as commercial ships that operate in the high latitudes during the dark months. ¶ “It’s one thing to be around bergy bits, but realistically, you need a well-fortified yacht to travel in pack ice,” Wood says. “As polar navigation opens up interest and requirements for the technology, it’s exciting to be providing a solution that works.” ¶ So, if you have high-latitude dreams like Roger Swanson’s but don’t have a lifetime to undertake the three multimonth expedition-style attempts that he required aboard Cloud Nine to reach Alaska, Furuno’s FICE-100 paired with an X-band radar could be the difference between success and a long, cold winter.

The Balearic island established a denomination of origin, Ensaimada de Mallorca, to differentiate knockoff versions from authentic products, much as winemakers do. Pau Llull’s bakery, Forn Fondo, is one establishment whose ensaïmadas have the stamp of approval from locals and visiting cruisers alike. ¶ Forn Fondo has produced pastries since at least 1742, and it’s been in Llull’s family since 1911, when his great-grandmother and her husband took over. Llull and his sister, Neus, are now fourth-generation Forn Fondo owners. ¶ Naturally, Llull’s most popular pastries are ensaïmadas, which are spiral-shaped and can come with various fillings. However, Llull says, the most traditional ensaïmadas, and the th ones that carry the denomination of origin, are “smooth” (sans filling) or filled with cabell de àngell — a sweet mixture of pumpkin and sugar. ¶ Forn Fondo, located in Mallorca’s coastal capital, Palma, is a mere half-mile from the water, so yachtsmen don’t have to go far to taste this island treat.

was jawboning with my pal Capt. Mike about his boss’s new ride. The fellow’s not shy about investing in the pastime and usually buys the latest and greatest, but this time around he was eyeballing an older analog sled. I suspected Mike had influenced the decision. ¶ “New boats go too fast and have too many damn computers,” Mike groused. ¶ Mike is still suffering post-traumatic stress from a fateful voyage more than a year ago.
