Transitus is a Multi-Modal Transportation Hub in Balewadi, a suburb of Pune. Pune is one of the fastest growing cities of India with lot of population in-flux everyday due high livability index, predominantly due to Academic and Work opportunities. Although this exponential growth in Population is leading to massive congestion on roads and fast deteriorating levels of Infrastructure, Transportation and Services. This transportation hub at Balewadi is one of the solution to attack these problems on area level. It provides public transportation services a smoother intermodal interfaces and travel route connection opportunities that tend to promote higher ridership along with economic benefits. MY PUNE. MY URJAA. Urjaa- Energy is vital to every living being. Energy can neither be created nor be destroyed; but can be convertef from one form into another. Apart from the tangible forms of energy, there is an intangible form of energy that is vital to city life. This energy comes in the form of a well-spent evening after a hectic day at work, a day spent shopping with friends, experiencing an enriching cultural program, quality dinner time spent with loved ones, working lunch, a cup of coffee with a nice book or working in a vibrant, well-planned office. Urjaa aims to harness both these forms of energy. Tangible through eco-design and Intangible by making welcoming, comfortable, interesting places inviting people to interact with each other, by designing safe physical environments, sufficient amenities, places encouraging social and cultural activities.

TIMESHARE Timeshares are a form of joint property ownership that enable individuals to own a set amount of time (usually in week) in luxury resort accommodations each year. Owning a tmeshare gurantees the owner space and secures the dates in advance. It removes inconvienience associated with owning the vacation property outright. It also facilitates long term savings over renting hotels each year. Some timeshares allow owners to trade, sell or gift their time , which makes vacationing more flexible.

This is a Zonal Headquarters for Multinational Bank in Pune, as their pilot project. This Zonal office has all the departments in the same building with emphasizing a lot on one-to-one customer interaction and providing a comfortable and creative environment for the employees. The building massing follows solid-void concept with rhythmic modifications in floor plans- resulting in a complex, interesting and a balanced builtform and elevation- giving a different perspective to a highrised office building. The voids in the mass act as refuge areas and semi-open interaction spaces, responding to the requirements. Building facade is composed of exposed RCC frame and exposed brickwork minimizing the use of glass. The envelope is 350 mm thick with 20 mm air gap facilitating thermal insulation. Exposed brick facade gives a warm character and a deep sense of craftsmanship and creates an Indian contemporary aesthetic.

CITY CONTEXT- Pune Pune is the 2nd largest city in the Indian state of Maharashtra. Pune is ranked the number one city in India in the ease of living ranking index. The city is considered to be the cultural capital of Maharashtra. It is known as the ‘Oxford of the East’ due to the presence of several well-known educational institutions.
AREA CONTEXT- Karve Nagar Karve Nagar is an old suburb in Pune city, named after Maharshi Karve- pioneer of Women education in Pune. It is home to Maharshi Karve Stree Shikshan Samstha’s many educational institutions. It houses academic, economic and residential activities making the area bustling with residents and students.
INSTITUTE Maharshi Karve Stree Shikshan Samstha’s Dr. Bhanuben Nanavati College of Architecture Maharshi Karve Stree Shikshan Samstha is an Indian education society engaged in women’s education, set up by Maharshi Dhondo Keshav Karve in 1896. The institution has expanded and is running 60 educational units having diversified branches all over Maharashtra with one of the units located at Pune. Dr. Bhanuben Nanavati College of Architecture is an institution, solely for women. It was founded in 1994 and is run by Maharshi Karve Stree Shikshan Samstha (MKSSS).
POTENTIAL OF PUBLIC SPACE DESIGN| COMPETITION | 64
SITE CONTEXT
SETTLEMENT BACKGROUND In the 60s, workers from the nearby quarry took up residence in the area around the institute as an informal settlement with an unplanned layout of self-built houses. Despite subsequent improvements to the houses, the layout remains the same with narrow lanes, dead ends and totally built-up plots. The occupation of the residents has changed today but they continue to be a low income, low education community.
65 | POTENTIAL OF PUBLIC SPACE DESIGN | COMPETITION
PROBLEM STATEMENTS LACK OF SOCIAL MIX The neighbourhood primarily contains two types of residentsGirl students and Low-income group families. There are approximately 12,000 students. The physical layout consists of narrow lanes and dead ends. Resident community is low income-low education and the students being from elite educational institution, the habits and socio-cultural needs of the two communities are different which is hindering the formation of cohesive mixed community.
DOMINANCE OVER SHARED SPACE Certain individuals or groups, especially those who claim to represent the community or have political aspirations, tend to dominate shared spaces to showcase their power and to prove their importance, thereby alienating other residents to a more democratic use of space. This issue is most obvious during festival celebrations. This Individual authority over shared spaces results into loss of sense of belonging towards the space by others.
WOMEN’S SAFETY There are frequent occurrences of eve-teasing, chain snatching and other petty crimes due to Narrow lanes and dead ends, lack of cross-connectivity and creation of shady pockets. This influences a differential pattern in the use of shared space by different genders.
POTENTIAL OF PUBLIC SPACE DESIGN| COMPETITION | 66
A single spaatial solution is devised to attack the three problem areas which is promoting social diversity, safety, community values and a positive identity for its residents. The solution incorporates power of participatory process in design where the users propose and execute the design and the designer acts as only a facilitator. The design aims to create a healthy and socially sustainable neighbourhood through the creation of a shared social space having a positive impact on the surrounding.

STREETS A street designed to cater to the needs of all users and activities , through equitable allocation of road space is referred to as complete street. This includes streets with continuous footpaths, segregated cycle tracks (wherever possible), safe intersections, uniform carriageways and organized parking. It could also include greenways, pedestrian-only streets, non-motorised vehicle and public transport priority streets. This is proposal for pilot complete streets project in the residential neighbourhood of Bavdhan- a suburb of Pune city, Maharashtra, India. The proposal aims at providing citizens of Bavdhan maximum walkability and efficient transportation infrastructure required for leading comfortable and happy life.
COMPLETE STREETS- BAVDHAN The COMPLETE STREETS- Bavdhan presents a solution- an urban design intervention to the existing transit infrastructure scenario for residential district in Bavdhan. This is intended to be a pilot proposal with prospected further extension in the whole of Bavdhan. This is an important first step towards creating people-centric cities. The design proposal is an outcome of a meticulous process starting at the grassroot level. This report contains contextual analysis of the site and surrounding area, analysis of how the design is derived through survey and citizen participation. It also adheres to the various schemes for urban development by the government. The process involves looking at each component of a street, checking its compliancy with the prescribed norms, surrounding land use and users’ opinion and needs. The surveyed parameters include Walkability, Road condition, Parking facility/violation, Street furniture(Adequacies, Incompetencies), Cleanliness, Non-motorized transport (NMT) infrastructure, etc. Analysing results of the survey quantitatively and qualitatively would give gaps, lacks and mismatches to be addressed by an holistic design solution. This pilot plan- when implemented will confirm the citizen requirements as found in the analysis.
