Hospitals introduce germ-zapping robots to enhance safety Baptist Health began using new state-of-the-art devices in our hospitals to help improve safety and reduce infections on Monday, Feb.16. The Xenex® germ-zapping robots™ feature a chemical-free, environmentally friendly technology that uses ultraviolet light to destroy dangerous microorganisms and reduce germs. This new tool augments, but does not replace, our extensive traditional cleaning procedures, providing yet another layer of protection to enhance safety at our hospitals. Practicing routine hand hygiene is still the best defense against infection. The Xenex robots, which disinfect a room in about five to 10 minutes, are being used in ICUs and other high-risk areas, such as patient isolation rooms, after the rooms are cleaned by Environmental Services team members in preparation for a new patient admission. They are also being used in surgical and procedural areas at night and during hours when the rooms are not in use. Exposure to the bright, powerful UV light used by the Xenex robots can be irritating to the eyes and skin. For those who may be photosensitive to flashing lights, please note the light does not pulse quickly enough to trigger seizures. No one should be in a room where one is operating; however, it is safe to watch the robot pulsing through a glass window. When the robot is in use, you will hear a loud clicking sound as the UV   light is zapping.  

Safety Features

This sign on a door indicates that room cleaning by a robot is currently in progress and no one should enter. An orange cone-guard is also placed outside the door to alert you of the disinfection. Although brief exposure is not harmful, the Xenex robot also includes a motion detector that will stop the pulses if anyone enters the room. 

Pedometer challenge to raise obesity awareness

Update your certifications by March 2

Join the Baptist Center for Bariatrics on Feb. 22 for the 2/22 Pedometer Challenge, a virtual walk across Florida to raise awareness of obesity and related diseases. The Florida chapter of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery is attempting to reach a goal of 1.7 million steps to raise awareness of this epidemic, which is one of the leading causes of preventable deaths. In our state, 26 percent of Floridians are affected by obesity.

Certified Nurses Day is March 19. As a Magnet™ health system, we take this opportunity to recognize ALL of our team members who hold certifications, knowing that their credentials strengthen our organization and enhance the care of the patients and families we serve.

Go to asmbsfoundation.org/pedometer-challenge to register, and take the pledge, “2 Better Health, 2 a Better Life, 2 Fight Obesity.” You will then track your steps for the day and submit your total by the end of day. There is no cost to participate, so sign up today.

Citrix 6.5 Migration underway Baptist Health’s Citrix 4.5 system, which provides many software products on your PC, is upgrading to version 6.5. This version supports newer and faster PCs with newer versions of Windows. With Citrix, software upgrades and maintenance are done on centralized servers instead of hundreds of individual PCs. This practice offers greater security, more stability and major cost savings. The application software you use each day will not change, but you can expect to see slightly different color schemes and slightly modified icons. Information Services (IS) has begun migrating users in phases and expects to complete the migration within three months. The schedule of applications and migration dates are being coordinated with clinical department managers. Please contact the Service Desk with any questions at 904.202.7565 or servicedesk@bmcjax.com .
