A Look Inside Baptist Clay Medical Campus

A Look Inside

Baptist Clay Medical Campus When the first phase of the Baptist Clay Medical Campus opened May 1 in Fleming Island, it brought closer, more convenient emergency care and diagnostic services to residents of Clay County. Each month the campus has continued to grow with the addition of more physician offices. In September, the Wolfson Children’s Specialty Center will open its doors, in partnership with Nemours Children’s Clinic and the University of Florida bringing an even broader array of services to the surrounding community.

• A LifeFlight helipad on campus and an ambulance on-site at all times for patients who will need to be admitted to a hospital.

Diagnostics and Imaging Baptist Diagnostics and Imaging provides imaging and laboratory work for patients who come through the Emergency Center and for patients who would like to schedule routine outpatient tests at Baptist Clay. Services include X-ray, CT scans, MRI, Ultrasound, Mammography and Bone Density.

Physician Offices

On May 6, Baptist Heart Specialists became the first physician office to open on the Baptist Clay Medical Campus. Practicing at this location are cardiologists Praveen Kanaparti, MD, David Stroh, DO, and Simone Nader, MD.

Full-Service Emergency Center

The Baptist Emergency Center at Clay opened on May 1 and in its first three months has treated 4,466 patients with nearly one in every three patients under the age of 14. The Baptist Emergency Center features: • A full-service hospital emergency room open 24/7 to treat children and adults • Separate waiting and treatment areas for children, and a board-certified pediatric emergency medicine specialist on site during peak hours

2 CareConnection

Dale Boyd, MD, with Baptist Primary Care Fleming Island, opened his office on July 9, and Orange Park Pediatrics opened its third practice location on July 22. The physicians practicing at this new Orange Park Pediatrics location are Rhonda Woolwine, MD; Dan Spearman, MD; Shiree Sauer, MD; Richard Gehret, MD; Charles Dellinger, MD, Mark Bedard, DO; and Tracy Tyson, MD. Additional physician offices will be opening soon, including Borland Groover Clinic.

“I love it here for the pure fact that I get to help take care of people I’ve known as long as we lived here.” Mike Hixson, CT Technician and Fleming Island Resident since 2007

Wolfson Children’s Specialty Center

In September, the Wolfson Children’s Specialty Center will open in partnership with Nemours Children’s Clinic, Jacksonville, and the University of Florida College of Medicine – Jacksonville. Wolfson Children’s Rehabilitation, which has been serving patients at another Fleming Island location for the last four years, will also move to 7,500 square feet of space at Baptist Clay and

will continue to offer its comprehensive scope of

pediatric occupational and physical therapy, speech therapy, and a sports and orthopedic rehabilitation program for children.

Employees are invited to several events celebrating the opening of the Wolfson Children’s Specialty Center. See page 23 of more information. Mike Hixson is a CT technician who has lived on Fleming Island since 2007. He loves working at Baptist Clay, not just because he shortened his daily commute but because he gets to take care of people who live in his own community. “I love it here for the pure fact that I get to help take care of people I’ve known as long as we lived here.”

Stephanie Behee, who lives south of Green Cove Springs, has been bringing her children to see Richard Gehret, MD, of Orange Park Pediatrics for 13 years. She is thrilled that his office is now 15 minutes closer to her home than before.

Gary McLaughlin was one of the first patients seen by Simone Nader, MD, at the new Baptist Heart Specialist office on the Baptist Clay Medical Campus. A stress test at Baptist Clay revealed he had several heart blockages and he was referred to Baptist Heart Hospital for a heart catheterization and bypass surgery.

Behavioral Health Transitions to a System-wide Approach Baptist Health provides the most comprehensive behavioral health care for children and adults in Northeast Florida. Our holistic mind-bodyspirit approach focuses on the whole person, with a full continuum of services from screening and consultation, to outpatient programs and inpatient care. Tremendous Growth. The last two decades have been a time of tremendous growth in behavioral health at Baptist. Since 1994, Michael Lanier has provided extraordinary leadership in building our behavioral health program. Dr. Michael Solloway’s leadership in adult care and Dr. Michael De La Hunt’s vision for services for children ensures that our patients receive the highest quality care. In 2006, Dr. Ellen Williams, a clinical psychologist, joined Baptist as a director, further strengthening the leadership team. With the opening of our adult inpatient unit on the St. Johns River in 2008 and the Larry J.

Lanier Expanding Operational Role at BMCJ. As Moran assumes the new executive role, Michael Lanier, Vice President of Operations at Baptist Jacksonville, is expanding the scope Michael Lanier of his operational responsibilities. He also will remain a strong guiding force as part of a new system-wide Behavioral Health Steering Committee.

Freeman Behavioral Health Center for children in 2012, our facilities truly reflect our steadfast commitment to behavioral health. We now have eight outpatient locations, so access to care is readily available. Philanthropy’s Role. Philanthropy has played an important role in our ability to provide these critical services. A gift from the Women’s Board helped build the new inpatient clinic for children and Delores and Wayne Weaver’s historic $10 million gift will provide perpetual funding via an endowment dedicated to behavioral health for children and adolescents. Hugh Greene, President and CEO of Baptist Health, has a passion for this work. “We have such a strong legacy of providing comprehensive Behavioral Health services and the bar has already been set very high. Now, with the extraordinary gift made by Wayne and Delores Weaver, we have an unprecedented opportunity

Baptist Jacksonville President Michael Mayo says, “Michael Lanier has provided outstanding leadership in Behavioral Health services for many years and now, he will be assuming additional responsibilities which are core to the operations of Baptist Medical Center Jacksonville. His passion for our organization, facility and patient experience reinforces the effectiveness of our senior leadership team.”

to improve access to behavioral health care and de-stigmatize mental health services, as the Weavers have expressed is their desire.” Bringing Services under Single Leadership. Greene adds, “I also believe that while we have been providing behavioral health services effectively, it has occurred in a somewhat fragmented fashion when one considers the scope of our services including pediatric and adult care, inpatient units, and all of our outpatient programs and locations. By bringing this important service line under single leadership, we are able to have a more coordinated system approach moving forward.” We have already started to apply a more integrated approach in the new Baptist AgeWell Center for Senior Health. Dr. Solloway explains, “Because of the high incidence of depression among the elderly and the poly-pharmacy issues, we recognized that behavioral health would be essential to have on-site at the clinic,” he says. ”The collaborative approach provides easy access to many different disciplines to meet the healthcare needs of the elderly, including their psychological health.”

Audrey Moran

Moran is New Executive Leader. Audrey Moran, Senior Vice President of Social Responsibility and Community Advocacy is assuming executive leadership of all Behavioral Health

Services. Reporting to Moran is Ellen Williams, Ph.D., Baptist’s new Administrator of Behavioral Health. (See related article.) Moran and Williams will work in partnership with Michael Solloway, MD, Medical Director of Adult Behavioral Health Services and Michael De La Hunt, MD, Medical Director of Pediatrics Behavioral Health Services. Moran explains how Baptist Health plans to more deeply integrate behavioral health into the

fabric of the community. “As we move forward, you will begin seeing Behavioral Health intersect with many different services across the health system as well as in the community. Some of the strategies we are exploring include embedding psychologists in some of our primary care clinics and collaborating with community resources to encourage more open conversation about the importance of behavioral health as a part of overall wellness.”

Ellen Williams Promoted to Administrator of Behavioral Health

As we integrate Behavioral Health services more fully across our health care system and develop new programs and services in the community, Ellen Williams, Ph.D. has been named Administrator of Behavioral Health. Dr. Williams is a clinical psychologist with 20 years of leadership experience in health care. She is a Fellow of the Advisory Board Company and a member of the Leadership Jacksonville class of 2014. Dr. Williams is an active member of the community and serves on numerous United Way committees, the Community Advisory Board of WJCT, and recently joined the Board of Directors for DLC Nurse and Learn, a non-profit day care center specializing in children with physical and developmental challenges. She says, “I am looking forward to the work of integrating Behavioral Health as well as combining my expertise in mental health treatment and program development with community advocacy and engagement.” Michael Lanier, Vice President of Operations and Behavioral Health at Baptist Jacksonville says, “I am very excited about this new opportunity for Dr. Williams. With her extensive clinical and leadership experience, she is the ideal person for this new position.”

IBM Case Study Examines Baptist’s Successful EMR Deployment Baptist Health’s implementation of its systemwide SHIELD electronic medical record (EMR) platform has been cited as a success story in a case study published by IBM Systems and Technology. The case study titled: Baptist Health Elevates Patient Care, describes how Baptist Health worked with IBM and its business partner Cerner throughout a one-year deployment process to implement the new EMR platform that has accomplished several goals. It improved access and availability of medical records, reduced our EMR server footprint by 50 percent,

cut energy usage by 55 percent and is capable of expanding to meet our future needs. “The end result is that providers have better access to the right information and tools where and when they are needed,” says Dave Dully, Baptist Health Vice President of Information Technology and Chief Technology Officer. “This directly translates into better patient care.” A copy of the case study can be found on the Information Services page under Support Departments on the Employee Intranet.

The goal of Phase Two was for employees to reach at least a 7% weight loss. Some employees not only met that goal but tripled it, while others were just a few percentage points away from the goal. However, they are all well on their way to better health. Here are list of those employees below who met the Phase Two 7% weight loss goal.

Making exercise a priority!

When the “Down to Size” program first began, participants were encouraged to exercise for a minimum of 150 minutes a week. Several of the participants took this challenge and literally ran with it! Participants averaged about 400 minutes a week. In addition to exercising at the Wolfson Wellness Center, they ran several local races and participated in sporting events. A few also joined the YMCA’s First Coast Games with Healthy for Life and competed in sports like bowling and softball. The participants have really made being active a way of life.

Employee Survey Results Sustainable Engagement

How motivated, enabled and energized are our employees? As we continue to look at the results of our 2013 Employee Engagement Survey, we are paying close attention to the three components of Sustainable Engagement:

engagement is vital to everything we do. We cannot provide the highest levels of quality and service without motivated, enabled and energized employees.”

• Are employees motivated? • Are employees enabled for success and productivity? • Are employees energized for top performance?

Research shows that in addition to being motivated, employees also need to be enabled for success and energized by their work environment to provide the best performance over time. Understanding where we stand in these areas is an important step in making improvements to our work environment at Baptist Health. (See table below)

Our scores are better in most instances than the norm for healthcare organizations nationally. For example, the question “the people I work with get along well together” is 14 percentage points higher at Baptist than the U.S. healthcare norm. However, our scores have declined since the 2010 Survey. Beth Mehaffey, Sr. Vice President, Chief Human Resources Officer, explains, “There is considerable uncertainly around healthcare reform and the future of health care. As the healthcare environment changes, we have to make decisions that prepare Baptist for the future. This has resulted in anxiety and stress at all levels of the organization and we recognize that,” she says. “However, we will not use this as an excuse for our lower scores. We take this

feedback very seriously and we are listening to what employees have to say. We clearly need to use this as an opportunity to communicate more with staff and refocus our efforts to improve the work environment.” The conversations between leadership and staff about the 2013 survey results have already begun. “While the conversation should be specific to your work area scores, it’s also important to consider the key drivers as these are predictors of engagement,” Mehaffey adds. “This is all of our work, not just leadership, and we encourage you to continue providing feedback and take advantage of the opportunities to be heard whether by serving on a unit council, attending open forums or participating in staff meetings.” July2013

Self-Evaluations and Electronic Signature New to Performance Reviews The 2013 performance evaluation brings changes to our traditional evaluation process. A new tool has been developed over the past year. It integrates the feedback of employees with our commitment to the patient experience.

Self-Evaluations

Employees will now have an opportunity to provide feedback on their performance and document professional development goals. This tool will help facilitate dialogue between employees and leadership about past performance and future developmental desires. Employees can login to PeopleSoft August 26-September 6 and answer these questions: 1. What did you do well in your job this year? 2. What can you improve in your job next year? 3. How did you contribute to team goals this year? 4. What skills would you like to develop this year? 5. What are your career goals for the next 5 years? On August 26, an email will be sent to employees with the direct link to the self-evaluation. Information will also be available on the Employee Intranet Homepage.

Electronic Signature

Employees will no longer physically sign their performance review. They will now login to PeopleSoft and acknowledge the review. The acknowledgement must be complete by September 30. Pay increases cannot be processed until the employee acknowledges the review. If employees acknowledge the evaluation after September 30, their pay increase will be delayed and the increase will not be retroactive. As part of the final signoff, employees will be asked to “select the option that most accurately reflects your career goals”. This feature was requested by employee focus groups and provides an opportunity for employees to indicate their interest in career growth.

Merit Increase

Like previous years, the merit increase will start with the October 18 paycheck. Unlike previous years, merit increases will not be calculated until after performance reviews and will not be part of the performance review discussion. In PeopleSoft, the performance review must be acknowledged before a pay increase can be assigned. A PeopleSoft generated email will be sent to employees on October 14 with a link to their new pay rate.

Volunteens Celebrate Hours of Service The Baptist Nassau Auxiliary honored our Volunteens with a celebration on July 19 that included numerous accolades, certificates presentations, compliments, handshakes and hugs. Our teens, their families, department representatives and Auxiliary President Rachael Hentigan, then enjoyed cake and punch. This summer, 19 young men and women volunteered a total of 862 hours, working alongside our seasoned Auxiliary. The program provides a perfect opportunity for teens to learn new skills, explore healthcare careers, meet new people and experience the joy of helping others.

24 CareConnection

The Auxiliary re-launched the Volunteen program in summer 2012 with the support of Hospital President Stephen Lee, Employee Health Nurse Teresa Carter, Auxiliary Immediate Past President Stephanie Manwell and Auxiliary Vice-President of Community Outreach Sandy Neuss. Many of the teens continued their service on Saturday mornings and weekdays after school. If you know of anyone who is interested in serving as a Volunteen next summer, contact stephanie.manwell@comcast.net

The teens gained real-world experience in Health Information Management, Imaging, Cardiopulmonary, Emergency Services, Patient Access Services, Patient Care Units, Surgical Services, Materials Management, and Security. The Community Relations department is thankful to all the departments who hosted teens this summer.
