Look for balance Begin by seeking your own sense of balance. What you consider a balanced life may not appeal to others, and vice versa. Seeking balance often requires us to let go of something, whether it is an activity or a chore. It means making a choice about what is most important for you (as an individual, professional and a mother) and your family. Balance is not tangible or constant, it is something that is often earned or developed over time – especially when it comes to flexibility in the workplace. Stay flexible While a routine or a schedule is a working woman’s best friend, it pays to be prepared for the unexpected and learn to be flexible. Not only will your stress levels be lower, but you’ll be better able to react to immediate situations and remain a stable person for your family and co-workers to rely upon. So, if a routine works this week, don’t take it for granted that it will work the entire month. Adapting to change is an essential part of life.
Set your own boundaries Knowing what is most important to you and your family will help you stay flexible and balance work-life better. Try to avoid taking work-related frustrations home so that you don’t eat into precious family time feeling miserable or anxious about work! Focus on work at work, and on your family at home. Combining the two (as in sending emails on
your Blackberry while playing with your kids at the park or talking extensively about your family at work) can send mixed signals to both co-workers and family members, and won’t help achieve the level of satisfaction at both work and at home that we often seek. Set your boundaries and priorities according to your core values and you’ll feel a greater sense of accomplishment at both work and at home.
Recognise signs of imbalance Feeling disgruntled? Resentful? Or simply too tired to enjoy anything? These may be signs that you lack balance and need to either let go of something or bring in structure. Identifying signs of imbalance will help you stop, pause and check to see what needs to be done in order to restore the smile on your face (or your kids’) and put a song in your heart!

f you weren’t one of the lucky ones to receive a practical dad, we thought we would help you out. Let’s face it; no-one wants to be the damsel in distress on the side of the road. Learn how to do it yourself! 1 S tep One
Make sure that your car is on a flat, stable surface and cannot move unexpectedly. Ensure your handbrake is up and that your car is in fourth gear. Try and put a brick or rock behind, and in front of, the wheels to prevent it from rolling. 2 S tep Two Remove the jack and the spare tyre from the boot and place next to the car. Put the jack under the car, close to the wheel that needs changing. Make sure that you don’t place it on the plastic. Rather, have a look for the metal beams running on either side of the underside of your vehicle. They run from the front wheels to the back. Notice that the beams have two notches near the front and rear wheels. Between these notches is where you can rest the jack. 3 S tep Three Raise the jack, but NOT enough to start lifting the car up. The car
simply needs to be resting on the jack. Once your car is supported, and safe, you can proceed. Make sure that you are aware, at all times, of any movement of the car to avoid injury. 4 S tep Four If you have a hubcap, pop it off using a spanner or wrench. Otherwise, keeping the wheel on the ground, loosen the nuts using a wrench to turn the nuts counterclockwise. If you are struggling to twist the nuts, put a piece of piping over the wrench for leverage. DON’T take them off completely. 5 Step Five
Now is the time to pump the jack to begin lifting the car. Proceed with absolute caution at this stage. Keep watching to make sure that the jack does not slip and that the car is not in danger of falling on top of you. Lift until the wheel is fully suspended in the air. 6 S tep Six Remove the nuts completely from the tyre. Keep turning them counterclockwise until they are free. If you have a hubcap, place them all together in the hubcap to prevent them from rolling away.
7 S tep Seven Remove the tyre from the car. There might be some resistance due to rust. Try hitting the outside of the tyre to loosen it if this happens. We also recommend that you leave the tyre there just in case the jack fails. It will prevent the car from falling on you. 8 S tep Eight Place the spare tyre on the hub. Make sure to align it correctly, and don’t put the tyre backwards. The valve stem should be on the outside and face away from the car. 9 S tep Nine Tighten the nuts as far as you can, by hand and then with the wrench. Make sure here, though, that you do it carefully and do not disturb the jack. They should all be sitting snugly on the tyre. Lower the jack back down, but NOT all the way. Make sure the full weight of the car is not fully on the tyre. Now, tighten the nuts with the wrench fully. 10 S tep Ten
Fully tighten the nuts and lower the car completely to the ground. Place your tyre back in the boot and make sure that the wheel is securely on. You can now take the tyre to be replaced or repaired. BILLBOARD MAY 2017 | 41

It’s not “just” the garden As agents, we are often asked what adds value to a property? The answers to this are of course too numerous to list, but one staple answer is that an attractive and nicely-laid out garden can do great things for a property, not least when it goes on the market. By Denis Quayle
O
ur real estate ideal as a society has traditionally stressed space and an outdoor lifestyle. We want room for our kids to play, and a venue for that most South African of social affairs, the braai. As the garden is one of the first sights of the property that a prospective buyer will have, it frames his or her overall impression – which feeds into what he or she may be willing to offer for it. A blooming, healthy garden is an asset. A poorly maintained one, by contrast, can be a liability. It raises questions about the care that the current owners have shown towards the property as a whole. So is a first-class garden a good property investment? In principle, yes, but with some important caveats. Gardens can be expensive and time-consuming to maintain. Buying a property with a complex
and immaculately laid-out garden implies that a great deal of attention will need to be devoted to its upkeep. For many buyers, a better option is a simpler landscaping scheme: a neat and grassy lawn, a couple of trees and shrubs, and flowerbeds planted with a small selection of species. Avoiding complexity reduces the time and costs of maintenance, while retaining the garden as a welcoming and attractive part of the property. Some simple, rustic garden furniture – a bench or an outdoor suite of table and chairs under an oak tree, for example – can be both functional and aesthetically appealing. They indicate that the garden is a space with a purpose and is part of the household’s routine. Water scarcity over the past few years has highlighted the need to conserve this resource, and since
household gardening imposes some of the greatest demands on our municipal water supplies, we need to be as sparing as possible. It seems clear that in most of the country – not least in the Western Cape – the old habits of a liberal daily watering from a hosepipe or sprinkler need to change. Fortunately, some innovative solutions are in sight. These include maximising the use of so-called “grey water” and, more importantly, gardens designed around plants with reduced water needs. “Desert garden” schemes have become enormously attractive to many, using stone and paving as a basis, along with rock and pebble beds, and drought-resistant succulents in their many forms. Such garden arrangements are not only beautiful, but low maintenance and environmentally sustainable. And they are likely to entice ever more buyer-interest.
