LAURA
BY ERIN SZOEKE OF SIT MEANS SIT
Laura (tri color) was adopted at 10 months old from Animal Defense League in San Antonio and Bear (brindle) was found at 6 weeks old in Edinburg, Texas. Laura and Bear are now helper dogs at Sit Means Sit dog training. They assist clients and their dogs in reaching their training goals. Their favorite activity is hiking with their mom and other dog friends. Laura and Bear are on a mission right now to go to every state park in Texas. Especially ones with rivers where they can swim. When they aren’t hiking, Laura is always looking for someone to give her a good belly rub and Bear just hopes someone will throw his ball for him!

About the location: Mike's Dog Store he house is decorated with paper flowers, papel picado and pinatas. There’s a beautiful embroidered dress for her. A starched guayabera for him. But what about the dog? That’s where Mike’s Dog Store comes in.
{April 2019}
Parade is Saturday April 27. Mike’s Dog Store is a sponsor of this annual event which benefits Therapy Dogs of San Antonio. “We participate in this event every year because it’s fun, it’s for a good cause and a lot of our customers are out there,” says Mike Kuykendall. Mike’s will be giving away treats and coupons. They will also have a representative from Vet’s Botanicals, a local company that is their source for CBD supplements. “CBD is giving many of our customers’ pets relief from anxiety, pain and inflammation. But it’s a new product and folks have lots of questions about it.” All the best-dressed dogs will be there too, so stop by Mike’s and get fido’s Fiesta on. COVER AND INTERIOR PHOTOS BY RENEE SPADE

Your Dog’s Balance Problem
maybeneurological V estibular disease – the disturbance of balance – in dogs can be a scary and frustrating condition. Nobody likes to see their dog wobbling around and the condition may arise spontaneously without a distinct known cause. Board-certified veterinary neurologists are trained to diagnose and treat conditions of the vestibular system.

easyprevention A
big part of keeping our families healthy is preventative care—this includes our pets. Fleas, ticks, and heartworms can make your furry friends very ill. Thanks to modern medicine, easy to use preventatives are available to keep our cats and dogs safe.
BY ASSOCIATE VETERINARIAN, LESLIE HOPES
Fleas live on the skin of cats, dogs, and many other animals, and feed on the blood of their host. A flea infestation can cause skin irritation and severe itching, and in severe cases, can result in anemia due to increased blood loss. If ingested, fleas can also cause your dog or cat to develop tapeworms. Ticks also live on the skin of cats, dogs, and many other animals, and they have the potential to transmit very serious diseases to an unprotected pet. Tick species vary by geography, so ticks may or may not be a threat to your pet depending on the area of the country that you live in. Heartworms are found in the heart of infected pets, primarily dogs. If left untreated, heartworms can be a potentially fatal disease. Adult heartworms cause disease by crowding and clogging the heart and blood vessels. As the disease progresses, most dogs develop cough, shortness of breath, weakness, and loss of stamina. Heartworms are not transmittable to humans and are not transferred from host to host. Pets receive heartworm disease from the bite of infected mosquitos. Fleas and ticks both live outside their host and they are quite capable of transferring to humans. Because these parasites are not dog or cat specific, providing your pet with prevention will also help keep your human family members at a decreased risk of exposure. When it comes to flea, tick, and heartworm prevention, the market is loaded with options for pet owners: Topical prevention is typically a small amount of liquid prevention that is intended to be applied on 16
the back of the neck of the animal. This area of the body is ideal for the application because the animal is not able to turn and lick the product off. Topical preventives are great for those pets who are picky eaters and those that may have food allergies. Keep in mind: after application of topical preventatives, pet owners should keep small children and other pets separate until the product has dried completely. Chewable tablets offer pet owners a way to protect their pets from fleas and ticks without having to apply externally to the skin. Oral preventatives are great for owners who may have young children or multiple pets that are not able to be kept separate during drying time after a topical product application. Most oral preventatives are flavored chews and are well accepted by cats and dogs. Oral preventatives are also often reached for by those pet owners who have pets that go swimming often or are bathed frequently. Because pharmaceutical companies are aware that pet owners are looking for the safest and easiest ways to protect their pets, combination heartworm, flea, and tick products are on the market and come in both topical and oral forms. When determining which prevention to use for your cat or dog, it is best to consult with your veterinarian to determine which products will work best for your pet. Looking for low-cost prevention for your cat or dog? The San Antonio Humane Society offers lowcost wellness clinics at two locations in San Antonio. For more info, pricing, and requirements, please visit SAhumane.org/wellness-clinic.

or me, it brings up fond memories of waking up and running outside to the front steps to see what the Easter Bunny had brought. My favorites were jelly beans, the big chocolate bunny and those delicious marshmallow peeps.

I would put on a colorful new dress for church and, then, it was off to Grandma’s. The whole family, dogs included, would race enthusiastically around the yard while the kids tried to scoop up as many eggs as they could during our annual Easter egg hunt. I’m not sure who had the most fun, the kids or the dogs. It was my Mom, though, who kept alert and watched to see that all of us stayed safe throughout the fun and games. She knew that, as with most holidays, changing the daily routine could pose dangers for her children including the four legged ones. As much fun as the Easter celebration is for the whole family, a little planning will ensure that your pets have a safe holiday. One peril that is easily overlooked are the beautiful Easter Lilies that decorate many homes at this time of year. They are extremely poisonous to pets and should be kept out of reach. Even the pollen can be very dangerous. Unfortunately, the sparkling Easter basket and all that it contains can be a potential source of danger to your dog too. The basket, itself, as well as the Easter

grass, plastic eggs, candy wrappers and small toys can damage the intestines or cause choking if ingested. Chocolate is poisonous to dogs and other candies, especially in large amounts, can make your dog very sick. These risks can be handled by simple management and supervision. Children might be responsible enough to secure their baskets, but if they forget, parents should put them up in a safe place. While enjoying the festivities, remember that dogs love to go overboard, especially when you’re not looking. Try and stay one step ahead of them and keep your eyes open for any unforeseen dangers of this colorful holiday. Have a wonderful Easter holiday!

Q: As we are into the Spring season, is there a way, you can help avoid your dog from getting fleas? Is there any spray or anything you can put on them? —Thank You, Julie
A: Flea control is very important in the springtime. Applying flea prevention to your pet is only one step in controlling a flea problem. 1st – Treat your yard with beneficial nematodes. Nematodes can be purchased at any good garden center. Springtime is also the best time to apply them to your yard. 2nd – Apply or give a topical/oral flea prevention to your dog or cat as recommended by your veterinarian.
3rd - Treating the inside of your home is important as well. Consider a reputable pest control service that uses insecticides that are pet safe. There are sprays that can be purchased at your veterinarian’s office. Ovitrol® and Frontline Spray® can be applied directly to your pet. Ultracide® is a spray you can use in the home that is also pet safe. I typically do not recommend over the counter flea collars, however Bayer® makes a collar called Seresto®. It is prescription only, and it is effective preventing fleas and ticks for 8 months. Seresto® has worked well on pets that live in rural areas where flea control is difficult. BY COLEEN ELLIS, PET LOSS CENTER
As we bid Old Man Winter “adios,” the innocence and freshness of Spring does seem to be lurking close by. This time of year that can truly represent the innocence and mystery of a desired change to replace the Winter’s dreary dark and cold with warmth and light. A powerful fistpump for the strength needed to put one’s face to the sun and shout “let’s do this! It’s been an honor to walk with you and share in the love, and loss, of our precious pets. To share the journey only pet lovers know and “get.” I also hope I’ve brought to you a bit of light and love in honoring these amazing creatures when they die, and giving you permission to honor them, to celebrate them, and to grieve for them in the way that’s right for you. With Spring right around the corner, and this beautiful time of year for a fresh beginning, I love reflecting on the place our pet family members share in our world. As I contemplate everything they represent, it seemed to me a bit of a thank you was appropriate. Do you mind if I speak for all of us with these sentiments? • Thank you for loving and loving so fully. Even if your beginning wasn’t stellar, you still possess the capacity to love unconditionally. • Thank you for showing us forgiveness. Even when we lose our temper, you don’t hold grudges. Not to mention what may have happened in the beginning of your life, you still forgive. We can learn a lot from you in that area. • Thank you for finding beauty and fun in everything. The walk we’ve done countless times is still filled 28
with awe and wonder for you as if it were the first time we’ve ever been down that path. We need to learn to do that as people, our world, and life in general is so full of beauty. • Thank you for living in the moment. We want to be like you and learn that trait. Thanks for letting us practice with you. • Thank you for showing us the power of communicating and connecting is really silence. Just being with you is a reminder of that. • Thank you for showing us patience. When our world is quick with an opinion and a sharp tongue, you just take in the moment. We need to practice more of that. • And, lastly, thank you for letting us be in your world. If you’re still here, we have so many lessons to learn from you. If you’ve already gone on your journey and are waiting at Rainbow Bridge, thank you for letting us spend a few minutes here and be reminded it was real. For that, we celebrate!

Your dog needs exercise! •
All dogs need plenty of exercise. If they don’t get it, they will develop bad habits such as chewing on furniture, socks and shoes, or dig up flowerbeds. They may even get depressed, and become really mischievous and unreliable.
•
Spending 30 minutes to an hour walking to the park with a dog walker, although better than nothing, doesn’t provide much exercise for a pooch, and receiving a picture of where your baby pooped may make you feel better, but it doesn’t do much for your dog.
Introducing Pet Galaxy’s Doggieland® Daycare and Door to Door Service •
For roughly the same money you would spend on 30 minutes for a dog walker’s time, we will pick up your fur-babies from your home in the morning, transport them to Pet Galaxy’s large Doggieland® play park for the entire day, where they can enjoy the park and play with compatible, like-minded dogs. Once they have experienced enough play, they will come inside for an all-important nap before they go back out for more fun again. At the end of the day, we will bring your happy and satisfied babies back home.
•
Prices start at $24.75 for all day daycare plus $5.00 each way for the bus ticket — flat rate. Our initial target areas are primarily neighborhoods north of Loop 1604 along the Hwy 281 corridor, including Stone Oak, Encino, Canyon Springs, Timberwood Park, Johnson Ranch and Bulverde/Spring Branch.
•
On request — for an extra charge, we can even serve lunch and/or dinner, administer medications, provide Bath, Brush and Nails service and/or a full groom.
•
And, of course, if needed — your pet is always welcome to spend the night (or longer stays) with us.
