reats? A new leash? A new collar? A sweater? A crate, ball, frisbee, harness, or perhaps a trip to Disneyland®? While we have never known a dog to turn down a delicious treat, and though a ball might be a popular gift for many puppies, the good people of Pet Galaxy believe they have the ultimate present for any dog. Pet Galaxy is located on an eight-acre campus in Spring Branch, Texas within the San Antonio Metro area. estive food, decorations, and gatherings provide plenty of opportunities for your pet to get themselves into a sticky situation, and veterinary hospitals typically experience a rise in emergency visits around the holidays. Don’t let a pet emergency ruin your holiday fun; keep your pet safe by avoiding these common holiday hazards.
Toxic foods Holiday gatherings often center around an indulgent meal, and pets that are treated to leftovers can suffer disastrous consequences. Turkey and ham scraps contain high levels of fat and salt, and can cause severe inflammation of the pancreas. Pets with pancreatitis often require hospitalization with intravenous fluids and medications to recover from severe vomiting and abdominal pain, and can develop chronic conditions, such as diabetes or inadequate digestive enzyme production. Prevent this life-threatening disease by resisting your pooch’s puppy dog eyes, and offer them a pet-safe treat instead. Clean up leftovers immediately, and throw away all refuse, including bones and scraps, in a pet-proof outdoor trash container.

There are a number of other holiday food ingredients that can be toxic to pets, including: • Chocolate • Raisins • Macadamia nuts • Xylitol (a common sugar substitute) • Raw yeast dough Ingestion of even a small amount of a toxic food can be dangerous, so keep your pet safe by feeding them only petsafe food and treats, and never leaving toxic foods out where they can get to them. Houseguest hazards Holiday houseguests may not understand the potentially disastrous consequences of letting your cat slip out through the front door or sneaking your dog treats from the dinner table. Ensure all guests know the house rules, or keep your pet safely confined to a quiet room or her crate during the festivities. According to the ASPCA’s animal poison control center, prescription and over-the-counter human medications are the number one cause of pet toxicities. Remind your overnight guests to keep all medications out of your pet’s reach. Disastrous decorations Your pet may assume your perfectly decorated Christmas tree is a gigantic jungle gym that you’ve erected just for

them, so take care to avoid these potential dangers: Electric cords — If your pet chews on an electric cord, they could be electrocuted or suffer burns to their mouth and face. Breakable ornaments — Hang breakable ornaments from higher branches where your curious cat can’t bat them off and end up with
a nasty cut. Salt dough ornaments — If your pet ingests even a small dough ornament it can cause severe increases in sodium levels that can lead to severe and life-threatening neurological symptoms. Tree water — Christmas tree water can contain pesticides that leach out of the tree, additives to keep the tree looking fresh and green, or dangerous bacteria levels that can make your pet sick.
Poisonous plants Many of the plants commonly used to deck the halls can be toxic if your pet eats part of one. Cats are often attracted to plants, but keep poisonous varieties, such as mistletoe, holly, balsam, pine, and cedar, away from all pets. Place arrangements out of reach or opt for artificial greenery instead. he threat of infectious diseases is ever-present at an animal shelter. There are many proactive steps taken in order to attempt to ward off these threats including vaccinating on intake, isolation of sick animals upon intake, and proper personal protective equipment. Distemper virus in dogs is one of the infectious diseases that can spread through a shelter and wreak havoc due to its prolonged incubation and shedding period. Distemper virus is a virus that attacks multiple body systems including the gastrointestinal, respiratory, integumentary, and neurologic. The distemper virus can spread through air droplets from coughs or sneezes or through shared water bowls or blankets. The incubation period for distemper can range anywhere from days to weeks. This means that an animal may come into the shelter appearing perfectly healthy, but still be a carrier of the disease. Until they begin to show symptoms, they are presumed to be healthy and may be allowed to co-mingle with many other animals in playgroups or on walks. When dogs are admitted to a shelter, they receive a vaccine labeled for distemper-adeno-parainfluenza and parvovirus. This is a standard vaccination that is administered to all dogs and puppies to help protect against disease. This vaccine reaches peak protective levels in the animal’s body in approximately 3-5 days. This early protection time is great, especially in a shelter setting, but a period of time still exists when an animal is still considered ‘at risk’ if exposed to any of the aforementioned diseases. As distemper can affect multiple body systems, the signs of this illness are not always obvious but there are some main clues a dog may have distemper. A dog with thick colored nose or eye discharge is often

more suspicious for distemper than the average kennel cough case. Other signs can be very mild changes in appetite to complete anorexia or vomiting. If the virus has begun to attack the skin, the dog’s paw pads and nose may become dry and crusty. The most severe form of the disease occurs when the virus begins to attack the neurologic system. Dogs that have entered this stage may develop seizures or twitches depending on how much damage the virus has caused. To prevent further spread of disease, dogs displaying signs that are consistent with distemper should be isolated from healthy dogs. There is not a single cureall for distemper as the virus attacks the host animal’s immune system. The standard of care for dogs that are diagnosed with or thought to have distemper is supportive care. Supportive care includes administering fluids to maintain proper hydration levels, medications for pain and nausea, and antibiotics to cover secondary bacterial infections. The goal of supportive care is to keep the animal eating and drinking and allow their immune system to combat the virus. When it comes to sanitizing the affected pet’s environment, the distemper virus is fairly easy to kill with normal sanitation. However, a dog that recovers from distemper can continue to shed the virus for months following their recovery. This prolonged shedding makes this virus difficult in terms of preventing disease for other dogs and managing a large population. The severity of this disease reinforces the need for pet owners to continually keep their pets up to date on their vaccines. it’s protected from water, wind, and drafts,” Rutter said. “It’s very important that if you provide your pet with a heat source, that it not be a fire, carbon monoxide, or anything that could be an electrocution risk.” She recommends using rice or oat bags that have been warmed, as long as they are not hot enough to cause burns. Rutter also reminds pet owners that some common winter items, including sidewalk salt, de-icing fluids, and chemicals for winterizing pipes, can be toxic to dogs and cats. If a pet will be outside for a short period of time, such as for exercise, owners can take several steps to ensure the pet stays warm and comfortable. Rutter advises drying pets off after exercise, protecting their feet with boots or a waxy layer, and dressing them in a coat to help with heat retention. Even if you do not have a pet that stays outside, you can help keep stray animals and neighbors’ pets safe during the winter. Rutter said temporary shelters can be made out of storage bins or travel kennels. She also recommends banging on car hoods before starting the engine, because cats may have crawled under the hood for warmth. Cold weather affects pets the same way it does people, said Dr. Christine Rutter, a clinical assistant professor at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences. She recommends bringing pets inside whenever it is cold enough that people feel uncomfortable outside. If pets are left in the cold with no protection, serious health issues can occur. “The majority of cold weather related illnesses have to do with exposure to the cold itself,” Rutter said. “In some climates, generalized hypothermia and frostbite of toes, ears, lips, the nose, and the tail can certainly occur.” She said that hypothermia may cause pets to seem mentally dull or antisocial while frostbite shows up as swollen, red lesions. Frostbite does not occur at a specific temperature, but rather results from a combination of cold weather, heat loss, and decreased blood flow. According to Rutter, some pets are especially sensitive to cold weather, including older animals, newborn animals, underweight and small animals, and those with shaved fur. If it is not possible to bring a pet into the house during cold weather, there are several options for keeping them safe and warm. Rutter recommends using a garage or mud room for a pet shelter, as long as any trash and hazardous chemicals are inaccessible. She also said a small shelter, such as a dog house, can be filled with bedding to keep the animal warm. “The key is that it has a small entrance and exit and that

Q: Has there been Lyme disease diagnosed in dogs in San Antonio?
has been no history of exposure to ticks. Prevention involves vaccination and tick control. Some of the tick control products include K9 Advantix®, Frontline Tritak®, and NexGard®.
A: Yes, Actually Lyme disease in dogs has been diagnosed in all states. Lyme disease is caused by a spirochete (bacteria like organism) and spread by deer ticks. A dog or person can be infected by the bite of the nymph or mature tick, especially if attached for 48 hours. Symptoms in dogs include fever, increased lymph node size, lameness or joint swelling, and sometimes a decrease in appetite. Your veterinarian can test for tick diseases with appropriate bloodwork, and then he/she will discuss treatment with doxycycline for 30 or more days. Most resolve without issue while there can be a few that become chronic in nature. In some cases of Lyme disease there

Also, make sure the pig ears are processed in the USA. They are not good for overweight dogs and dogs with history of pancreatitis. All dogs need plenty of exercise. If they don’t get it, they will develop bad habits such as chewing on furniture, socks and shoes, or dig up flowerbeds. They may even get depressed, and become really mischievous and unreliable.
