Inspired by The Word: J OY
Every one of us wants joy. And there are many Christian books and Bible studies on the topic. We’ve heard all the explanations and tried the equations, but joy often still eludes us. Maybe we’re looking for the wrong thing. Joy can be a feeling. It’s an awesome one. But joy can also be a conviction, an assurance that God is in control, a sacred delight in the truth that He holds all things in His power. Let’s not relegate joy to just one of these definitions. It can be more than one, can’t it? The God who made us knows that sometimes our emotions are engaged and sometimes they’re not. So I think He gave joy a fluid nature so that it would fit where we needed it. Paul, the apostle, could say he had joy in a Roman prison, chained to a guard. It might have been a positive emotion, but I rather suspect his joy was more of the conviction type. Miriam, the prophetess, had joy when she celebrated with the other women on the banks of the Red Sea after Pharaoh and all his host were drowned. Her song of triumph is recorded in Exodus 15. This was most certainly a feeling. The psalmist proclaims that he will be joyful in the Lord and specifically in His salvation. You can never go wrong here. Finding either or both assurance and emotion in the sacrifice of Jesus and the redemption He offers is a win every time. Keep studying joy. Do those Bible studies. But just remember that joy is within reach, in one of its forms, wherever you find yourself. That’s a pretty great thought. Lord God, I want my joy to be found in You. Thank You for this gift through Christ. Amen.

Inspired by The Word: STRENGTH
Strength is a word our world respects. From strength training in physical exercise to being strong in the fight against cancer, the concept is applicable in myriad ways in our culture. We see it illustrated in various mediums and forums. Trendy slogans, human rights campaigns, medical research, and even greeting cards all laud the attribute of strength of character and determination. The apostle Paul was given God’s opinion on strength. He was wrestling with a weakness, a limitation of some kind. For years, Bible scholars have debated the exact nature of his problem. We still don’t know for sure, but whatever it was, it was debilitating in some way, and Paul did not have the power on his own to fix it. So he did what Christians do. He called on God. He asked the Lord to take away this hindrance, this infirmity. And God answered no. Paul was told that he must continue in his ministry and trust that the God Jehovah would keep him going through divine power. Grace is divine enablement, and God promised it in abundance to His servant Paul. He was further promised that God’s strength would be clearly evident in his own weakness. That’s how God shines clearest. In the darkest hour, the Lord’s child can be a voice of testimony to His all-sufficiency. What are you facing today that requires extraordinary strength? What battle demands power? What relationship needs support? What situation dominates your prayers? Come to Him, remembering that “they are weak, but He is strong.” Find that His strength is endless. Especially when you’re weak. Father, I’m glad that Your strength is available to me at any hour and in whatever quantity I need. Glorify Yourself in my weakness today. Amen.
Goals for the Month
My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. 2 C O R I N T H I A N S 12:9
