BALNEOTHERAPY CENTER SOMESENI BATHS 2015 | Someseni, Cluj Diploma project The project is situated on the site of the former Someseni Baths, a 24 hectare natural area at the perifery of Cluj, near a poorly structured residential area in the vecinity of the rail corridor. The site is mostly covered by flat, swampy terrain, half of it unbuildable because of it’s natural reserve status. On the northern limit there is a creek, while to the south-west, a small, wooded ridge, 11 meters high, overlooking the swampland. Between the ridge and the swamp there are several mineral springs with different compositions and curative properties. The proposal aims to obtain a coherent connection between the built tissue and the natural elements of the site by a new balneotherapy resort. This includes a balneotherapy center with a restaurant , gym and outdoor water park, a hotel area, a conference center, a public garden near the creek, a sportsbase, and info pavilion, public parking and promenade areas.

The therapeutic center, designed in more detail, responds to it’s natural surroundings through it’s two main spaces, each oriented to a valuable site asset. Thus, the main indoor recreational area has a transparent, extroverted character, opening to the vast reedland to the east, while the therapy pools area is oriented towards the wooded hill, being a more intimate and introverted space.

COMMUNITY CENTER 2014 | Cluj | School project Team: Barbu Precup, Alex Potra Manastur, with it’s 100 000 inhabitants is by far the city’s most populous neighbourhood. Built in the 70s with only densification and low costs in mind, it lacks the necessary infrastructure, be it transport, leisure or cultural. Located on a 2 hectare plot in the district’s center, the project tries to supplement for this lack by offering a place for the local people to engage in social, leisure and cultural activities. At the same time, it offers various outdoor public spaces, meant to stimulate and enrich as much as possible the active life of the people nearby. The building’s volume takes advantage of the local topography, being tailored for the plot, while the interior spaces are neutral and multifunctional. The proposed functions are a multifunctional hall, a small library, a cafe, a senior club, a board games club and spaces for dance classes, martial arts and art workshops. The greenhouse on the south facade is used to heat the building during winter, increasing it’s energy efficency.

OFFICE BUILDING 2013 | Cluj | School project Team: Barbu Precup, Alex Potra The project is located at the periphery of the old city center, an unsystematized area that is to see new developments in the near future. Being close to the main marketplace, a large school and various healthcare and commercial buildings, the spot is just outside of the main pedestrian routes. Therefore, a good design should be able to divert some of the interest towards this presently underdeveloped area.

While the building complies to local alignment regulations which target the widening of the streets, it further adds an open courtyard to the public space, to act as an outdoor atrium and as a funnel that draws people towards the services areas. Given it’s low height, the buildings tries to emphasize it’s presence in the intersection with the large console that acts as a corner accent.

In order to leave as much public space as possible, all the necessary parking spaces are contained in the two underground levels. The ground level has a cafe and a services space towards the street, while the entrance to the main lobby is located in the courtyard. Further to the back are the conference rooms. The next three levels have offices in various layouts coresponding to different firm sizes.

ORTHODOX MONASTERY COMPLEX 2012 | Cluj | School project Team: Barbu Precup, Alex Potra The theme was to propose a monastery complex which included a church, the monastery grounds, a chapel and a small orphanage with class rooms, all of a sloping site in a new, developing, residential area. The project was structured in two parts, the first concerning the building and site and the second dedicated to detailing the church. The complex is adapted to the significant slope by means of a stepped design. While a monastery is essentially a closed entity, we felt that it should also contribute to the public space with a small plaza which helps direct the visitors to the monastery and also allows a wider perspective towards it. From the entrance lobby, one can enter the main courtyard, a semi-public space where the church is. This yard is open on the western side, being separated only by a gallery, to allow better natural lighting and to give it a less restricted character. Further down there is a more private court and in the back, a terrace opening towards the garden and orchard. Most of the parking spaces and also the technical yard are on the west side, at a lower level.

The confession was at choice, so we decided to make the establishment orthodox, partly because of the multitude of poorly designed orthodox churches built in the years after the fall of communism, partly as an exercise to design a contemporary building while respecting the strict orthodox canons. The main inspiration came from the the old Romanian churches. We kept the succession of tall, narrow, protective spaces, as well as the general suple proportions, but used a simplified, more contemporary formal language.

“LIGHTS ON“ COMPETITION 2015 | Cluj | Winning proposal Team: Barbu Precup, Diana Siminic This is a winning entry for the design of Christmas lighting installations in a public square from Cluj, selected through a design competition. The center of Mihai Viteazul Square is currently sparsely used by people. That is why we felt the need for some elements that would be both decorative and would arouse curiosity, so as to populate the area. Therefore, we proposed the placement of white, luminous spheres (hence the title “Snowballs“) of three different sizes, throughout the open public space, so that people, besides looking at them, could also stroll between them, touch them or take photos. We also suggested the extension of the proposal on two nearby watercourses, which usually lack any Christmas decorations. Moreover, we chose to decorate the biggest existing fir tree in the square, to act as an accent and as a simbol of Christmas. Lastly, the square is to be framed by white string lights hung between the existing light poles.

GUEST HOUSE INTERIOR DESIGN 2015 | Cluj | Completed project Team: Barbu Precup, Alex Potra, Sebastian Ivan The project consisted of redesigning five rooms, a hallway and a main staircase to accomodate guests for a local teaching institution. This included designing the custom furniture, room layouts and bathrooms and other interventions in the common spaces. This is an annex building to one of the faculties, with small windows and little natural lighting. To make the spaces less gloomy and more welcoming, we tried to achieve a light, playful atmosphere in the main stairway and hall, by using a warm parquet finish and colorful OSB figures on the walls. The oversized rooms numbers with LED backlighting also contribute to this effect.

Rooms 2-5

Rooms 2-5 are identical, while room number 1 is smaller, given it’s placement at the end of the corridor. The rooms have a typical hotel layout, with a small entrance hall, a bathroom, a two-person bedroom and a small kitchen, except for room 1 which lacks the latter. The main element in the four identical rooms is the two-sided wardrobe which separates the entrance from the sleeping area. Between the room and the kitchen we designed an L-shaped furniture piece that would serve both as an eating table and a study. For the bathrooms, the project included a new ventilation system in the attic, with an air circuit, which would compensate for the lack of bathroom windows.
