The Analysis of a City and its Architecture
A city can be understood by the shared conditions that give it some form of coherence.

The Analysis of a City and Architecture is an in-depth analysis of different conditions within an urban environment, specifically the central business district of downtown Syracuse. We investigated a variety of topics: Blocks and Streets, Buildings, Public Spaces, and History. My team explored more deeply the topic of history which we tried to reflect by showing the evolution of Syracuse over time. We conducted research, interpreted our findings, and compiled a complete analysis in diagrams, drawings and designs that we each worked on individually but presented in a cohesive format. My team consisted of Kante, Coumba, Luo, Miao, and Li, Ying Na.

The Analysis of Urban Buildings And Their Facades
“The facade has the unique capacity to embody the idea of the building as a whole and is the principal instrument by which the architect shapes the observer’s impression of it.” - Professor Randall Korman
10 The Analysis of Urban Buildings and Their Facades
The Analysis of Urban Building and Their Facades is an additional analysis and investigation of a precedent building. My team studied the Kunsthaus Bregenz, a contemporary art museum designed by Peter Zumthor. The focus of the project is the facade of the building as we considered the relationship of the external and internal aspects of the building. In addition, we studied the building’s identity as a museum as well as its place in the city (Bregenz, Austria) and how the structure defines the city. Analysis through drawing covered topics like Architects, Program Distribution, Movement, Massing, and Facades. Further into the process, we built relief models, creating depth with negative space. Focusing on the facade and grids from the Kunsthaus Bregenz led me to the layering of grids, followed by the rotation of grids which allowed each model to have different effects of depth and design. My team members were Anbumozhi, Adhityan and Boyer, Lawrence.

Designing an Urban Building (From Outside In and Inside Out)
“Designing from the outside in, as well as the inside out creates necessary tensions, which help make architecture. - Robert Venturi

TITLE
16 Designing an Urban Building
To study the relationship and influence of architecture and its urban setting and vice versa, Designing an Urban Building is a continuous project of the two previous exercises. The goal is to design a new building, the Archive of the City of Syracuse, within an actual site in downtown Syracuse, from ‘outside’ and from ‘inside out’ following the arguments of Aldo Rossi and Le Corbusier’s respectively. The assignment dictates a 15,000 sq.ft. building with two sides exposed and the other sides that are part of neighboring buildings. Specifically given a corner condition to address, I first addressed the massing within the context and wrapped the mass with a facade that connects or disconnects within the site. Using a carefully articulated grid pattern similar to the Kunsthaus Bregenz, I aimed to have that address the two different elevations and to interact with the building. I used relief models of layering and curvature to develop the facade. The process of development came from design through drawings in plans and sections, creating depth and elements of 2D & 3D while maintaining the integrity of the site.

Analysis of an Urban Building is further development of another person’s design and perspective. Through relief models based on Context, Facade, and both combined, a fellow peer Coumba KantÊ analyzed my design and developed her own (shown on the left).
As shown on the following page I analyzed the infill site design of my peer Rivera, Alba and I emphasized the varying angles and depth. (pg. 26 &27)
