Bard class of 2020, Welcome to the seventh year of Citizen Science at Bard College! How can we reduce the global burden of infectious disease? The Citizen Science program promotes scientific literacy by merging three distinct yet thematically interwoven rotations that will help us understand and answer this pressing question. In a wet laboratory setting, a computer modeling lab, and a problem-based learning classroom, you will work in small groups to explore the nature and spread of infectious diseases in a community and the impact that those outbreaks and their subsequent management can have on our global society. When you are not in the classroom or the laboratory, you will have opportunities to attend lectures from scientific leaders in the public and private sector, including your own Citizen Science Faculty. Some of you will meet our visitors in your classroom, and talk with them one-on-one about their work. You will all get a chance to pass on your science knowledge and enrich younger students’ lives at the same time when you participate in science outreach to our community K-8 programs, organized by the Center for Civic Engagement. You might choose to participate in any one of a variety of onand off-campus weekend civic engagement activities. Finally, the Office of Student Activities has a full slate of fun events planned for when you want a little relaxation. We hope that you will enjoy this exciting and innovative program and that you will make the most of the opportunities presented to you through the classes, lectures, and civic and social engagement opportunities. We look forward to spending January with you. Sincerely,

Amy Savage, Ph.D Director, Citizen Science
