Two young moms, Nancy Traversy and Tessa Strickland, start Barefoot Books from our homes in the UK. With four children between us, we raise funds to get our little business off on the best foot!

1993

We work with storytellers and illustrators from all over the world and launch our very ﬁrst list of 10 titles.

1996

We’re one of the first UK publishers to launch an e-commerce website. We publish our first story anthologies, launching our sales to over $1.5 million!

1998

We see potential to grow in North America and open our ﬁrst US oﬃce in Brooklyn, New York.

2000

Our global network of partners, educators and retailers continues to grow. The Animal Boogie is published...and goes on to sell over 2 million copies!

2001

We open our ﬁrst ﬂagship studio in Cambridge, Massachusetts, offering storytelling, arts & crafts and more.

2005

We create Yoga Pretzels with Yoga Ed., which later sells nearly one million copies.

2008

We become the exclusive children’s book store within FAO Schwarz’s flagship store in New York City.

2010

We move our ﬂagship studio to Concord, Massachusetts to connect with our local community.

2012

With 4 million downloads, our Barefoot World Atlas app is picked by Apple as one of the top 10 best apps in the App Store.

2017

Forbes names us to its prestigious Small Giants list, honoring us as one of the 25 Best Small Companies in America!

2019

In partnership with Books for Africa, we ship 300K books to HIV / AIDS orphans and their caregivers in Mozambique.

2021

We move our office from Cambridge to our colorful new home in Bradford Mill in West Concord, Massachusetts.

We partner with family owned Books4School to get one million books in 20 languages into children’s hands!

Opening children’s hearts, minds and worlds This year, as we celebrate our 30th anniversary, it’s fitting that the overarching theme of our product offer is kindness. As you’ll see as you browse our catalog, our mission guides our publishing decisions now more than ever. We are committed to opening children’s hearts, minds and worlds so that they can embody kindness in all its forms. Our new Kind Kids activity deck (p. 2) helps children understand the many forms kindness can take. On a small scale, kindness can be towards oneself, nurturing positive identity development (see Hana’s Hundreds of Hijabs, p. 15). Kindness can also ripple out to larger and larger spheres — to the development of global awareness (see Harvest Days, p. 7, and the Our World series, p. 10) and taking a stand for our planet (see Count On Us!, p. 9).
