A MAJOR YEAR PATRIA JAFFERIES CHAIR
6
ANNUAL REPORT 2012 As I reflect on my first twelve months as Chair of Barking Gecko Theatre Company, I am delighted to announce that the company has performed beyond expectation. Celebrating its 21st birthday, Barking Gecko Theatre Company is beginning to mature. 2012 has been a phenomenally busy year for the Company that has seen the development of an artistic program commensurate with a state level theatre company. Artistically there is no theatre company in Western Australia producing theatre that challenges audiences and pushes convention as with Barking Gecko. Under John Sheedy’s artistic direction the Company has delivered a program usually seen by the large state theatre companies and included two shows as part of the 2012 Perth International Arts Festival – The Red Tree and Driving Into Walls. Both of these shows were critically acclaimed and saw sold out performances. Improvilicious 2.0 continued to entertain new audiences in both the metropolitan and regional parts of Western Australia. Improvilicious 2.0 toured regionally to the top end of Australia. This Girl Laughs, This Girl Cries, This Girls Does Nothing saw nationally acclaimed Director Noel Jordan develop this co-production between Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre and Q Theatre in conjunction with Barking Gecko. This production toured nationally and to Western Australian metropolitan schools as part of our education incursion program after it premiered its Perth season at the Subiaco Arts Centre. The recruitment of Nathan Giles as General Manager resulted in significant change in management for the Company and offers an enviable business model for all arts organisations. This model has seen significant results in a short period of time with the Company posting its first surplus in over 3 years in what was a challenging environment. To achieve this, the General Manager and Board implemented a new business plan to support the artistic direction spearheaded by John Sheedy in 2010 and to recoup the Company’s finances that had been eroded since 2009 whilst creating a platform for solid business and creativity to work collaboratively to achieve outstanding results. In closing, I must say that the year ended 30 June 2012 was a major year for Barking Gecko and, in this context, I would like to acknowledge the contribution of all of our employees and Board to the progress we are making. There is a clear sense of excitement in what we can achieve and there is certainly a tremendous effort being put in by everybody.

BARKING GECKO THEATRE COMPANY
A YEAR OF CELEBRATION JOHN SHEEDY ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
10
ANNUAL REPORT 2012 2012 was the celebration of Barking Gecko’s 21st birthday! It’s quite an achievement for a theatre company to celebrate such a milestone. Over the last 21 years, Barking Gecko has developed, nurtured and created live theatre and performed around the globe. Turning 21, our coming of age year, brought a sense of newfound independence, maturity, risk-taking and investigation. We embarked on new adventures in the productions we created by committing to developing projects with long gestation periods where we can explore and implement interdisciplinary work and further develop creative ways of story telling, collaborating with the best artistic teams from a range of performing arts disciplines. 2012 saw Barking Gecko firmly place itself on the national stage with two sold-out seasons in the Perth International Arts Festival. We gained international interest and celebrated 5 Helpmann Award nominations – including Best Children’s Theatre and received 9 Equity Award nominations. We kicked off the year with 500 confessions! We asked if Barking Gecko is WA’s theatre for young people, then who are our young people? Created from 500 interviews with teenagers from across the state we presented Driving Into Walls, a brash, bold and sometimes confronting snapshot of WA’s teenagers. Driving Into Walls premiered as part of the Perth International Arts Festival and made front-page headlines in The West Australian as the teenage romp that was sending shockwaves across WA – we couldn’t have asked for a better way to open! Driving Into Walls sold out, was critically acclaimed and became one of the companies highest grossing shows in its 21-year history. More importantly, it engaged a newfound theatre audience of teenagers. In addition, we revisited The Red Tree, a journey through the highly imaginative world of Shaun Tan as part of the Perth International Arts Festival. Following the festival, Perth’s favourite improvisation duo took a new twist on the history of theatre to schools across the state. We ended the 2012 season with a coproduction between Barking Gecko, Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre and Q Theatre Company with the Australian premier of This Girl Laughs, This Girl Cries, This Girl Does Nothing by Finegan Kruckemeyer and directed by Noel Jordan. Our BGTC Workshop again excited, inspired and up-skilled Perth’s artistic youth. This year, workshops doubled in numbers, as did attendance at Good Morning Maggie with 2 shows being presented every Wednesday morning at Karrinyup Shopping Centre. Significantly, 2012 saw us regain the generous financial support from the Australia Council, allowing us to keep developing the important work that is designed to invigorate, challenge and inspire our ongoing dialogue with audiences of young people, teenagers, schools and families. Towards the end of the year, Barking Gecko succeeded in continuing its artistic growth and success, developing new creative partnerships with some of the best theatre companies and artists this country has to offer - Sydney Theatre Company and Opera Australia, Oz Opera with the first of the creative developments for Storm Boy and our highly anticipated new operatic adaptation of Shaun Tan and John Marsden’s multi award winning children’s book, The Rabbits. Most of all, 2012 was about presenting our audience with theatre that is alive, fertile, tender and explosive – theatre where the experience outlasts the event. John Sheedy Artistic Director

STORIES WE TELL NATHAN GILES GENERAL MANAGER
12
ANNUAL REPORT 2012 Barking Gecko Theatre Company is first an artistic company – exploring and pushing the art form is our passion. Our ambition is to create work that is extraordinary, exhilarating, challenging and relevant – theatrical experiences for both young and old that builds a tolerance and engagement between generations and infuse the audience with a yearning and appreciation for the performing arts. The company views youth as the future shapers of our society. Our programming aligns and supports their development be it early childhood, middle childhood or adolescence. We acknowledge their place in society and explore the barriers and opportunities they face. Our audience is valued as young spectators who will become responsible and active citizens shaping the society in which we live. We tell stories that are influenced by our base in Western Australia but contain universal themes that resonate on a global level and place everyone sharing the theatre space on equal ground regardless of race, gender or age. We choose stories that celebrate the depth of the human experience and do not shy away from the bigger issues. We seek to test the elasticity of our artistic practice by developing projects with long gestation periods where we can explore and implement interdisciplinary work and further develop creative ways of storytelling, collaborating with the best artistic teams from a range of performing arts disciplines, including text, multimedia, music, design, lighting and sound. Barking Gecko Theatre Company’s compelling annual program of new contemporary works, infused with a mix of different styles, has consolidated our standing as a main stage force in the Western Australian landscape. Our works exemplify a cutting edge standard in theatrical craft that enables us to attract and collaborate with the best Australian talent. We have developed a Business Plan 2013 – 2015 that will guide and drive our continued success through the management of 4 strategic goals - Artistic, Financial, Operational an Audience Development. These goals are fundamental to the ongoing success of Barking Gecko Theatre Company and will enable the delivery of an exciting artistic program with sound, supportive and innovative business management to further develop the creative and underwrite the financial future of the Company. We are continuously experimenting with new ways to respond to, engage with and challenge our audiences. Audience development will be a key focus for the Company with an emphasis on research, inventive partnerships, engagement and brand strength all contributing toward the development, diversification, size and reach of our audience. We believe in establishing mutually beneficial partnerships, not just sponsorships, but partnerships that support the aspirations and development of our country’s culture, people and history whilst exploring and showcasing the diversity of Australia and Australian Theatre. It is through these partnerships that Barking Gecko Theatre Company will invest in its future by funding greater productions whilst maintaining a solid level of financial reserves (currently in excess of 15%). The implementation of our Corporate Partnership and Private Giving strategy will enable the diversification of income whilst underwriting the financial security of the Company. Management, Board and Patron/Ambassador development will be a key focus for the Company ensuring the structure, representation, engagement, skills and succession planning are aligned for the betterment of the Company and its goals. We are developing engagement plans for both our Patron, Professor Fiona Stanley AC and Company Ambassador, writer Craig Silvey to further raise the profile of the Company and undertaking significant Board development to support the Company and its future. Collaborations with Australia’ best creative talent and with flagship national Companies will be a key focus for Barking Gecko Theatre Company. It is as a result of these collaborations that we are able to redefine theatre for young people through the development and execution of high quality engaging theatre. Nathan Giles General Manager

THIS GIRL LAUGHS, THIS GIRL CRIES, THIS GIRL DOES NOTHING WRITTEN BY FINEGAN KRUCKEMEYER DIRECTED BY NOEL JORDAN Three girls. Three pathways. One destination. Three sisters are abandoned in the middle of a forest by their father. Facing an uncertain future, one decides to walk one way around the world, one decides to walk the other way and one decides to stay right where she is. EDUCATION Our 2012 Education Program is developed to support teachers by creating unique opportunities to enhance student learning, inspire classroom conversation and provide an access point into the world of the performing arts. Schools that participate in our program accessed educational resources and online content, received discounted student prices and were also offered opportunities for further development. In 2012 our education program brought dedicated school performances, workshops and incursions into schools in Perth and regional Western Australia. This saw us perform to over 6,500 students across the state and conduct workshops with almost 300 students.
“Our students and staff absolutely loved the show. It was a highlight of the term. The performers were terrifically entertaining and informative. We basically laughed hysterically for the duration of the performance.” – TEACHER
“I am a big fan of Barking Gecko Theatre Company and will continue to promote your wonderful work at our school. I wish more teachers understood the incredible value your beautiful and meaningful performances bring to children (and our) lives.” – TEACHER
WORKSHOPS In 2012 our Workshop Program allowed children and young people to explore their creative side. Workshops were available for children aged 7 – 10 years, 11 – 13 years and 14 – 17 years. Workshops were run during school term and during the April, July and October school holidays. Working with a passionate team of tutors each workshop session encouraged the uniqueness of students by developing self-confidence, team building skills and nurturing a love of the performing arts. We also ran a regular, in-term, Good Morning Maggie session for children aged 2 and over. Each week Maggie took her young audience on a journey into the world of children’s literature, sparking an early love of reading. Each reading session was completed by an art and drama activity. This workshop series was supported by Karrinyup Shopping Centre. This year we worked with over 2,000 children and young people through our workshop program. Our specialised workshop program saw us work with an additional 529 participants across the metropolitan, regional and outback areas of Western Australia.

“The outstanding thing about Barking Gecko is that it really ‘gets’ kids - it knows how to engage them, entertain them, move them and inform them. It is such a powerful way to connect with young people and I applaud their professionalism and creative prowess. I am very proud to be their Patron and see them impact on such a diverse audience in such a wonderful way.” - BARKING GECKO PATRON, PROFESSOR FIONA STANLEY AC Msc, MD FFPHM, FAFPHM, FRACP, FRACOG, FASSA, Hon Dsc

MESSAGE FROM OUR AMBASSADOR, CRAIG SILVEY
“I’m thrilled to be involved with Barking Gecko as Ambassador because I’m passionate about young people experiencing theatre, and Barking Gecko has so often been the first introduction to the medium for so many in the state. Theatre is a transformative and intimate way to absorb stories, and I think it’s vital that kids get the opportunity to connect with art via the stage. Barking Gecko has been inspiring and nurturing that connection for twenty one years, establishing its reputation as an important cultural touchstone in our community, and I’m thrilled to be a part of that tradition.” - BARKING GECKO AMBASSADOR, CRAIG SILVEY
