He also contacted the Union for Reform Judaism on behalf of Scouts for Equality. Lake’s family originally attended Temple Sholom in Springfield.

I suspect the article above, about Temple Israel’s plans to establish an LGBT-inclusive Cub Scout pack — which will voluntarily register as inclusive with the national advocacy group Scouts for Equality — may Marshall cause some confusion. In 2013, Boy Weiss Scouts of America voted to end its ban on gay members. Last year, BSA removed its ban on gay Boy Scout leaders and employees, although religious movements that sponsor BSA units are exempt from lifting this ban. As Temple Israel member Lake Miller explained to me, when BSA units volunteer to register as inclusive with Scouts for Equality, this helps LGBT families know clearly who welcomes them fully, with no reservations.

Does this mean units not registered with Scouts for Equality aren’t LGBT inclusive? No. But the voluntary registration is meant to send a clear signal to LGBT families about where they will be welcome. A BSA unit that’s registered with Scouts for Equality also doesn’t imply the unit is exclusively for LGBT families. And Temple Israel’s unit will be open not only to Jews, but to the general community.

The URJ isn’t able to confirm that Temple Israel is its first congregation to establish a Boy Scout unit since URJ reestablished ties with BSA last year. But Lake confirms that Temple Israel’s Cub Scout pack will be the first Scouts for Equality-registered inclusive unit that is connected to the URJ. The only other LGBT-inclusive Jewish unit currently registered with Scouts for Equality is a Cub Scout pack based at the Levine Jewish Community Center in Charlotte, N.C. Four Ohio-based Boy Scout units have registered as inclusive with Scouts for Equality: in Cleveland, Oberlin, Columbus, and a Cub Scout pack based at Fairmont Presbyterian Church in Kettering.

The Cub Scout pack at Temple Israel, Lake says, will be open to the entire community, “Jews and non-Jews.” He’ll help with the pack, but because he’s not 21, he can’t be one of the leaders in charge.

“Karen’s going to step up and be a leader,” he says, of the temple’s senior rabbi. Once they sign up the required number of leaders and boys, they’ll submit the papers to the Miami Valley Council. He hopes BSA’s Miami Valley Council will be open to Scouts for Equality’s inclusive unit certification training on bullying and coming out in scouting.

Lake, who identifies as straight, says he was inspired to become involved in LGBT advocacy because of his mother’s work with the National Conference for Community and Justice of Greater Dayton. He participated in NCCJ’s Camp Anytown program.

“I’ve always been raised with the atmosphere of, you need to fight for the people who don’t have anyone fighting for them,” he says.

In an email to The Observer, URJ President Rick Jacobs wrote, “we’re excited that Temple Israel can help point the way for synagogues and BSA to partner in putting into practice the best values of scouting and Reform Judaism.”

In August, Lake starts as a freshman at Wittenberg University in Springfield, where he plans to study business, “maybe some Spanish,” and will take Jewish studies classes. But he’s intent on doing “as much as possible” with temple’s pack.

“The fight is not near over,” he says. “It’s a total culture change in the Boy Scouts of America.”

Ohio Jewish Communities leader dies at 68 Joyce Garver Keller, the longtime executive director of Ohio Jewish Communities, who helped establish a state Holocaust memorial, has died at 68.

On May 2, less than two weeks before she was to be honored at a Jewish Council for Public Affairs event in Cleveland, Keller died at her home in suburban Columbus. No cause of death was reported.

According to the Cleveland Jewish News, Keller retired last June after serving 25 years at OJC, which represents the state’s Jewish federations and their partner agencies in Washington and Columbus.

She also worked Joyce Garver behind the Keller scenes to bring the Ohio Holocaust and Liberators Memorial at the Ohio Statehouse to fruition. Designed by architect Daniel Libeskind, the $2.1 million memorial was unveiled in June 2014.

Keller raised private donations for the memorial and helped advance the project, the Columbus Dispatch reported.

In a statement to the Dispatch, Ohio Gov. John Kasich called Keller’s death “a deep personal loss for me and for so many others in Ohio who valued her friendship and have long admired her leadership.”

“I will forever be grateful for her essential role in helping make the Ohio Holocaust and Liberators Memorial a reality,” said Kasich. “Her dedication to the Jewish community, as well as her understanding of the importance of leading lives of commitment to values larger than ourselves, is a model for us all.”

Howie Beigelman, Keller’s successor at OJC, told the Cleveland Jewish News: “She was a mentor to so many people in and out of Ohio in the community advocacy field, and a guide to so many public officials in understanding our community and working with our community. Everything we do each day is based on the foundation she laid.”

Keller is survived by her husband, Steven, a son and three grandchildren.

What Avigdor Liberman could learn from the last non-general to be Israel’s defense chief

By Ben Sales, JTA TEL AVIV — He was an outspoken politician with little military experience, appointed by a rival and promising to bring a new approach. Current and former officials at the Defense Ministry called his appointment an “enigma,” fretting that “it will take some time until he understands how things work” and that “he’ll have to undergo basic training.”

The subject of that criticism wasn’t Avigdor Liberman, the hard-line nationalist with scant army experience who was offered the defense portfolio in a surprise move May 18. It was Amir Peretz, the last non-general to hold the post, briefly, from 2006 to 2007.

Peretz and Liberman don’t actually have much in common. Before serving as defense minister, Peretz, who hails from the Gaza border area, was the head of the Labor Party and the chairman of Israel’s Histadrut Labor Federation. He’s known as a dove who supports IsraeliPalestinian peace.

Liberman, who lives in a West Bank settlement, is head of the hawkish Yisrael Beiteinu party. His peace plan includes

drawing Israel’s border to exclude a large portion of its Arab citizens.

But Liberman would do well to avoid the mistakes of Defense Minister Peretz, who is remembered for alleged mismanagement of the army and helping to launch a controversial war.

Peretz campaigned in the March 2006 election on his forte — social and economic issues — but took the defense post after his party finished second at the ballot box and joined a coalition led by the centrist Kadima party.

He was challenged immediately when Hamas kidnapped Israeli solider Gilad Shalit on the Gaza border that June, and

Hezbollah kidnapped and killed two soldiers on the Lebanese border in July. The 2006 Lebanon War that followed saw 165 Israelis die in what was seen as a poorly executed campaign.

Peretz resigned after a government-commissioned report in 2007 blamed Israel’s leadership for “serious failings and flaws in the lack of strategic thinking and planning.” One of the lasting images of his tenure was an infamous photo of Peretz surveying troops through binoculars with the covers still on the lenses.

Liberman is a brash hawk who has inserted himself into Israel’s security discourse by lambasting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for allegedly hesitating during the 2014 Gaza war and by calling for instituting a death penalty for terrorists.

In March, he came out in support of Elor Azaria, the soldier who shot and killed an immobilized terrorist in Hebron.

Just as defense officials challenged Peretz, Moshe Yaalon — who resigned as defense minister following Netanyahu’s offer to Lieberman — has not

been afraid to suggest concern about his apparent replacement.

He said Israel had “lost its moral compass.” Yaalon, a former left-winger who shifted right, has alienated his base by criticizing Azaria and defending an Israel Defense Forces official who compared Israel to 1930s Germany. But few doubted Yaalon’s security credentials.

Liberman and Peretz aren’t the only defense ministers to take the post sans senior combat experience.

Shimon Peres wasn’t a general, and neither was Moshe Arens, both of whom served in the 1990s. But Peres served as director general of the Defense Ministry in the 1950s, while Arens held a senior post in Israel Aircraft Industries, which supplies the military.

Despite his dearth of military chops, Liberman has already won words of welcome from right-wing politicians, but will now face the challenge of proving he can handle Israel’s top security post.

Bar-Ilan political science professor Shmuel Sandler told JTA “Liberman will have to be flexible to gain the trust of the army.”

House passes bill protecting circumcision, Jewish general tapped to serve as Air Force’s highest-ranking officer ritual slaughter as religious freedoms U.S. Air Force Vice Chief of Staff Gen. David Goldfein, 57, a one-time pilot whose fighter jet was downed over Serbia in 1999, has been nominated by President Barack Obama to be the 21st chief of staff of the Air Force, the Pentagon announced April 26.

Goldfein is set to succeed Gen. Mark Welsh III, who has served in the position since 2012, the Air Force said in a statement. If the Senate confirms his appointment, Goldfein will be the second Jew to serve in this position. Norton Schwartz, who preceded Welsh, was Air Force chief of staff for four years. Goldfein flew during the Gulf War, in Afghanistan and in NATO’s missions in Yugoslavia, according to the Air Force Times. By Ron Kampeas, JTA A bill unanimously approved by the U.S. House of Representatives would extend religious protections to advocates of circumcision and ritual slaughter as well as atheists, addressing what its sponsors describe as an increase in religious persecution in recent years.

The bill, passed May 16, would broaden the definition of "violations of religious freedom" in the International Religious Freedom Act of 1998 to include the persecution of advocates of male circumcision or ritual animal slaughter.

Atheists would become a new protected class.

The measure, which moves to the Senate for consideration, was named for retired Rep. Frank Wolf, R-Va., a longtime champion of human rights who authored the 1998 law.

“The world is experiencing an unprecedented crisis of international religious freedom, a crisis that continues to create

millions of victims; a crisis that undermines liberty, prosperity and peace; a crisis that poses a direct challenge to the U.S. interests in the Middle East, Russia, China and sub-Saharan Africa and elsewhere,” Rep. Chris Smith, R-N.J., who authored the bill, said in a statement.

There have been increasing calls in recent years in northern European countries for an end to circumcision and ritual slaughter, spurred in part by anti-Muslim hostility, U.S. government and European Jewish officials have said.

The bill's tier system for how well or poorly countries protect religious freedom would be similar to the one used in the annual State Department report on human trafficking.

That report is influential, and countries seeking the good graces of the United States strive to improve their ranking by cracking down on the practice.

New stage for Temple Mount activist Yehuda Glick: The Knesset

By Ben Sales, JTA TEL AVIV — A year and a half ago he was a fringe Temple Mount activist expected to die, the victim of a point-blank assassination attempt.

On May 23, he entered the Knesset, the ruling Likud party’s replacement legislator for outgoing Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon.

Yehuda Glick’s journey — from the United States to Israel, from government bureaucrat to outspoken demonstrator at Jerusalem’s most contested site, and from a hospital bed to elected office — is an unlikely one.

And Glick’s arrival in the halls of the Knesset reflects the growing reception of his push for Jews’ right to visit and worship on the Temple Mount.

Between 2009 and 2014, Jewish visits to the site nearly doubled.

Glick has been barred from the mount — revered by Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary — and was even charged with assault there (the charges were dropped). He and his fellow religious activists see his accession to Knesset as a victory for a just cause following his brush with death. Critics, however, say the power he wields could exacerbate tensions at a regional flashpoint.

“I’m sure that I will be involved in the Temple Mount,” Glick told JTA. “Just like I use the justice system and the courts, I think the political world has strong institutions to promote issues in a democratic society.”

Glick, 50, is the director of Haliba, an organization that brings Jewish groups to visit the Temple Mount and fights for Jews’ right to pray there.

Previously, Glick was the head of the Temple Institute, a group that builds vessels for animal sacrifice and commissions architectural plans for a future Third Temple on the mount.

The Temple Mount is under Israeli sovereignty but, under a deal following Israel’s 1967 takeover of the site, is run by the Islamic Waqf, a Jordanian body.

Muslims generally have full access to the site and the exclusive right to pray there. Jews can only ascend the mount during limited visiting hours and are forbidden from doing anything resembling worship such as kneeling, singing, dancing or rending their clothes.

On May 23, Netanyahu scolded Glick for paying a visit to the Temple Mount hours before being sworn in as a Knesset member. Netanyahu has barred all ministers and Knesset members from going to the Temple Mount in an effort to defuse tensions there.

According to the Times of Israel, Netanyahu told Glick at the end of a Likud faction meeting, “This is the last time you do this to me.”

Seemingly surprised, Glick responded: “What did I do? Earlier today I called up (Internal Security Minister Gilad) Erdan in the U.S. and I told him about the whole thing.”

Over the prior weekend, Glick told Israeli media he had no plans to violate the Temple Mount ban, saying, “With my entrance to politics, I am a team player and not an individual one.”

Jews of color cite racism in communities

At the Jews of Color conference, 25 sessions were offered over three days

Largest-ever such conference convenes amid national conversation about Black Lives Matter, societal barriers

By Hannah Dreyfus New York Jewish Week As calls for criminal justice reform continue to spark national debate, the largest-ever gathering of Jews of color convened in New York May 1-3 to discuss matters of racial justice inside and outside the Jewish community.

The conference, organized by the Jewish Multiracial Network (JMN) and Jews for Racial & Economic Justice (JFREJ) and cosponsored by Bend the Arc, touched on sensitive flashpoints in the conversation, including the racism Jews of color continue to experience in Jewish spaces and the role of Jews in the Black Lives Matter movement (which was cofounded by a Jew of color).

Buzzwords in the burgeoning conversation about race on college campuses — including privilege, safe spaces, and intersectionality, a concept used to describe the interconnectedness of various forms of oppression (for example, racism, sexism, homophobia, classism, etc.)

— were sprinkled generously throughout the sessions and workshops.

“The renewed focus on racial justice in this country translates directly to our institutions,” said Leo Ferguson, community and communications organizer for JFREJ. “The Jewish community is waking up to this fiasco and doesn’t know quite what to do about it,” he said, referring to the conspicuous lack of Jews of color in leadership roles at many Jewish organizations. He said the conference turnout — 150 people from across the country — well exceeded expectations.

Conference attendees were all Jews of color, and white staff members of the organizing groups were not permitted to attend sessions; press was limited to five of 25 sessions, and a conference organizer told this reporter that because she is Caucasian, she couldn’t interview attendees at lunch, but instead could interview a handpicked group of participants. Some of those at the conference, PAGE 8

held at the new home of Congregation Beth Simchat Torah on West 30th Street, wore colorful head wraps, turbans and dreadlocks; several participants carried drums and other instruments.

Sessions addressed complex power dynamics within the Jewish community, internalized oppression and the privilege, or lack thereof, that accompanies skin color.

Kalycia Trishana Watson, 32, a conference participant originally from Jamaica, said the conversation about race is still “not happening in a lot of spaces,” regardless of religious denomination.

Though she grew up in a Reform setting in Illinois, she experimented with different forms of Orthodoxy until she grew “tired of my identity constantly being challenged.” Today, she identifies as “just Jewish.”

“It is exhausting to always feel like you are the ‘other,’” she said, recounting several uncomfortable experiences in which she was questioned about her Judaism because she is black.

In one such instance, while she was participating on a Birthright trip in 2008, El Al security officers barraged her with questions about her Jewish background far more intensely than they did other passengers; she was asked to recite several pieces of basic Jewish trivia, including naming that week’s Torah portion.

In another instance, during a speeddating event at a New York synagogue, her partners repeatedly asked her if she was really Jewish.

“I’m always being asked to prove my Judaism,” said Watson, who today conducts research on urban affairs at Columbia University. “It’s such a relief to be in a space where I don’t have to explain and justify myself. I can breathe here.”

Shais Rishon, an Orthodox African-American Desmond Reich writer and blogger better known for his pen name MaNishtana, said that there’s a tendency in the Jewish community to start the conversation about race, but to avoid the “messiness” of the matter when things “you didn’t want to hear” come up.

“The last thing you want to do when speaking about the fight for real equality is to end with a nice little bow,” he said.

“Better to leave on a discordant note, so people don’t assume this issue has been resolved.

Sense of siege in Kiryas Joel amid FBI raids, scrutiny of yeshivas

Story and Photos By Uriel Heilman, JTA NEW YORK — Even before FBI investigators descended on the Satmar Chasidic village of Kiryas Joel on May 12, there was a growing sense in this insular community that it and its unique way of life were under attack.

Two months earlier, the FBI had been in the village investigating alleged fraud of a government program, and community leaders also have been facing a mounting campaign by dissidents to increase state oversight of yeshiva curricula.

“We need to know what kind of danger we’re in,” the Satmar rebbe in Kiryas Joel, Rabbi Aaron Teitelbaum, said in a widely publicized May 4 speech about the threat of closer state supervision of yeshiva curricula. “These are bad times for us Jews, terrible.

We need to pray to God that they should not interfere with the upbringing of our children.”

In the May 12 FBI raid, investigators confiscated computer equipment and boxes of documents from the village’s Department of Public Safety and its main yeshiva, United Talmudical Academy. An unnamed law enforcement source interviewed by a local newspaper, the Journal News, said the raid was related to the publication on social media two weeks earlier of a leaked hidden-camera video that appeared to show a principal of the yeshiva kissing and grasping young boys in his office. Some 6,000 students are enrolled in the school.

Publication of the video, which generated a firestorm in Orthodox circles, came the same week that a New York State legislator, Ellen Jaffee, introduced a bill that would bring better enforcement of state rules that require non-public schools, including yeshivas, to ensure they are providing education that is “substantially equivalent” to that offered in public schools. Yeshivas like those in Kiryas Joel, located about an hour north of Manhattan in New York’s Orange County, long have flouted state standards on secular subjects, foregoing even basic subjects like English and math in upper grades.

Jewish teenagers want to engage: just ask them

By David Bryfman Welcoming teens into Jewish life is both one of the most important and seemingly challenging endeavors of the Jewish community. The rapid decline in teen engagement in Jewish life post-B’nai Mitzvah is welldocumented and depressing.

It’s also an entirely reversible trend, but only if the Jewish community approaches teen engagement in a new way — one that recognizes the whole teen and values her or him as an equal partner in creating experiences that add meaning to her or his life.

In general, Jewish teens (like non-Jewish peers) today are deeply thoughtful, inquisitive and ambitious. Also like their peers, they can be narcissistic and attached to technology.

Most of today’s teens are vastly different than a generation ago, and in many ways different than a decade ago.

These changes are due in large part to the changing world in which we live, the central role of technology and the nearly endless opportunities for personal customization

We know this because over the last 21/2 years, The Jewish Education Project led major research to learn about Jewish teens from Jewish teens.

We heard directly from them about their lives, their views on spirituality, their ambitions, their fears, their feelings toward friends and family, how they form their identities and more.

We’ve compiled and analyzed the findings into a new report, Generation Now: Understanding and Engaging Jewish Teens Today.

The report’s insights are a wake-up call to organizations or individuals who want to engage Jewish teens.

Our communities need to work with teens to create experiences that address all aspects of their lives.

Just a few insights from Generation Now show the depth of Jewish teens today: • Jewish teens want programs of substance that add value to some facet of their life.

Teens are most likely to find Jewish knowledge meaningful when they see the connections

and relevance to the rest of their lives.

Programs that blend this value with opportunities to have fun, socialize and be with friends are especially attractive.

• While many teens still see Judaism as a religion, many more relate to being Jewish in language commonly associated with ethnicity, culture, heritage or tribal affiliation.

• Being a minority group in the U.S. is something that many Jewish teens highly value and feel pride in, but they do not view themselves as being special for this reason. In fact, many Jewish teens enjoy involving non-Jewish friends in “Jewish activities.”

• Jewish teens often are both universalists and particularists.

Their orientation is fluid and depends on their environment.

As an example, “doing good” is an important value, but seldom seen as a Jewish value.

• During major holidays, teens appreciate time to bond with immediate family, visit extended family and enjoy family traditions, particularly around “traditional” foods. Most of

today’s teens enjoy spending time with their parents.

The challenge now is to take the report’s insights and have them inform our community’s approach to Jewish teen education and engagement.

We must move beyond thinking about teens as passive recipients of Jewish learning experiences. Instead, we must begin designing initiatives and programs with Jewish teens, for Jewish teens.

Many teens are ready to lead now and want to have skin in the game. They are the most effective people to engage their peers.

At the recent Summit on Jewish Teens, held during the BBYO International Convention in February, teens welcomed the invitation to take a place on the stage and at the table with philanthropists, lay leaders, professionals and others — to network with these individuals, to learn from one another, and to share and hear about the latest developments in Jewish teen engagement.

In another country and in another political system, Donald Trump could quite conceivably become a dictator. Given his admiration for the collection of clowns and thugs who currently fit that political descriptor, he clearly has the right personality.

American caudillo, the fact that one can easily picture him enjoying such a role is a critical reason why so many Americans shudder at the thought of Trump in the White House.

While most American Jews share that visceral reaction, there are a growing number who don’t — and who are going to campaign for and vote for Trump. Those I’ve spoken to have all said that they can’t stomach the thought of a Hillary Clinton presidency after eight years of President Barack Obama. They list positive reasons, too — they think Trump will be receptive to Jewish concerns, that he’ll be tough on national security, and that he should be applauded for standing up to the same progressive Democrats who treat Israel as an enemy instead of an ally.

Those are all positions that deserve to be considered and debated rationally. Jewish supporters of Trump have a point when they say that the reality TV star is well-poised to win the election, and that therefore we would be wise to engage him. But equally, they need to understand that, historically,

Jews have invariably oriented toward the center of politics.

Demagogues articulating strident messages that translate uneasily into policy are the polar opposite of the establishment, experienced political figures who have traditionally won Jewish support.

At issue here, moreover, is not just Trump, but Trump’s supporters. In America, a would-be president is expected to act like a statesman; by that logic, and sooner rather than later, Trump should disavow, explicitly and unreservedly, the semi-literate Klan-like rabble that is riding his coattails.

Crucially, nobody has given him an incentive to do so — yet. That incentive can, realistically, only be provided

by Trump’s Jewish supporters, since he never listens to his adversaries.

If these Jews are going to give him legitimacy, and assist him in resisting the false charge that he’s an antisemite, then their voices need to be heard on the following developments that have further marred Trump’s appeal to Jewish voters:

Harassment of Jewish critics

Julia Ioffe, a prominent journalist whose GQ magazine profile of Melania Trump earned her the enmity of the Trump campaign, was bombarded with sickening antisemitic messages from pro-Trump trolls on social media. Nazi imagery was richly in evidence in the case of Ioffe, as it has been with other Jewish critics of Trump, like John Podhoretz of Commentary magazine (“Are you gonna flee to Israel after TRUMP is elected president?!

LMAO KIKE!!” read one message) and Daily Wire editor Ben Shapiro, whose newborn baby was described by one sociopath, in the fashion of Der Stürmer, as a “cockroach.” In public at least, Trump has been unmoved by any of this, and has even ventured that these critics brought this foul invective upon themselves.

“As a Jew…” apologetics

When I read the vile attack carried by Breitbart.com on Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol, which identified him

each community itself. A “cookie cutter” approach to programming would inevitably fail.

Yet Generation Now offers recommendations for all communities to bear in mind. Effective initiatives will engage teens intellectually, physically and socially; will offer something that teens want to share with friends; will be demonstrably applicable to teens’ lives; will help to develop skills; will help teens feel proud of being Jewish; will help teens be better citizens of the world; and/or will help teens make the world a better place.

Changes in teen engagement will come from existing organizations that can adapt and do things differently, and from the creation of new organizations ready to engage 21st century Jewish teens.

Together with teens, we can make Jewish experiences a meaningful and central part of their lives.

David Bryfman, Ph.D., is the chief innovation officer at The Jewish Education Project, a beneficiary of UJA Federation of New York. as a “Renegade Jew,” I wondered whether this would be an isolated example or the harbinger of a new phenomenon.

The author of the piece, David Horowitz, has embraced Trump with the same dogmatic fury that he employed in embracing the far left in the late 1960s. In highlighting the irrelevant fact that Kristol is Jewish, Horowitz trod the same ground as those forelock-tugging Jewish leftists who ingratiate themselves with Israel’s enemies by disavowing the Jewish state.

“I am a Jew who has never been to Israel and has never been a Zionist in the sense of believing that Jews can rid themselves of Jew hatred by having their own nation state,” Horowitz implored pathetically.

For good measure, he added that he is an “American (and an American first)”— thereby insinuating that the remainder of the Jewish community is fatally compromised by a greater loyalty to Israel. Will other Jews on the right follow the shabby example of those on the left by presenting themselves as the “good Jews?” Does a Trump supporter who invokes the “dual loyalty” smear get a free pass?

But that implicit agreement may be breaking down as it becomes more difficult for authorities to ignore abuses — sexual, educational or financial — allegedly taking place within these closed communities. The prospect of outside interference threatens one of Kiryas Joel’s raisons d’etre: Chasidic control of the community’s affairs.

“Until now there were also strict laws, but because we live in a kingdom of benevolence (a reference to government authorities) to put it bluntly, they simply turned a blind eye to what’s going on by the Jewish children,” Teitelbaum said in his speech, which was delivered in Yiddish and then translated into English for widespread dissemination. “They didn’t want to look, the benevolent kingdom.

Now, too, they’d continue doing that, the government would have continued, they’re happy not to look and not to know. But these worthless people are stirring up in various ways and are demanding in court, forcing the government that they should take a stance.”

The newfound scrutiny is being pushed largely by dissidents, in some cases ex-Chasidim, who say they are acting in the best interests of the commu-

nity: whether to protect children from sexual abusers or to give them the basic educational skills necessary to succeed in life.

“I’ve been to those yeshivas, I know exactly what the effects are,” said Naftuli Moster, executive director of Yaffed, an organization he founded that lobbies lawmakers to force Orthodox yeshivas to offer quality secular studies in addition to Torah studies.

“You’re not gaining anything by depriving people of an education. The very Satmar rabbi that made that speech also encourages people to earn a living, to his credit, but at the same time he’s the one who has jurisdiction over the yeshivas that are depriving Chasidim of the very tools necessary to earn that living,” Moster told JTA. “So what do people end up doing? Oftentimes they resort to criminal activity and other shenanigans to earn that living.”

In March, FBI investigators were in Kiryas Joel, nearby Rockland County, and Brooklyn investigating alleged fraud by Chasidic institutions in the federal government’s E-rate program, which funds the purchase of technology equipment and internet service by schools and libraries. Authorities reportedly are looking into whether the yeshivas actually spent the money they obtained from the federal government for technology in the schools.

Yaffed’s Moser is a Brooklyn native who grew up in Chasidic institutions. The sex abuse video presumably was recorded by an insider at United Talmudical Academy and was posted on Facebook by Boorey Deutsch, an Orthodox activist against sex abuse in the community. The alleged E-rate fraud was the subject of investigative stories in 2013 by the New York Jewish Week and the Forward.

Joseph Waldman, a longtime Kiryas Joel community leader who heads a local welfare organization, said the unprecedented assault on the Chasidic community stems from local non-Jews’ fear of its rapid growth — just as the biblical Egyptians feared the rapid growth of the Israelites in Moses’ time.

“That’s the reason they were trying to make the trouble for the Jews in Egypt: The first thing they were afraid was the Jewish families growing so rapidly,” Waldman told JTA. “Here, they are fearful that they’re going to be overwhelmed either by the growth of the environment or by political clout through the bloc votes.”

“They want to stop the community from growing,” he said. “That’s the reason for all the problems.”

Adding to the pressure, on May 17, the New York Daily News and WNYC public radio published and broadcast a joint investigative story scrutinizing the outsized number of low-income, Section 8 housing vouchers that have gone to the Chasidic community in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn — a Satmar neighborhood with close ties to Kiryas Joel.

The WNYC story attributed the voucher aberration to Chasidic “selfdealing that’s impenetrable to outsiders” and cited lawsuits arguing that the Chasidim obtain housing vouchers through unfair or unlawful means. The story also noted that Chasidim are taking the vouchers with them to places outside the city, like Kiryas Joel.

This perfect storm of scrutiny has community leaders on edge. In his speech, Teitelbaum expressed fury that fellow Jews are the source of much of the pressure.

“Due to our many sins, it’s very painful to talk about it, there stood up several worthless people from our own who have studied in Chasidic yeshivas, and sadly they arrived I don’t want to say where. They decided to wage war against the whole ultra-Orthodox Jewish community of New York,” the rebbe said. “They went and snitched to the governments of New York City and New York State with complaints that the

Thanks and Gratitude for Yom Hashoah Volunteers and Attendees This year's Yom Hashoah Program on Sunday, May 1 had an overflow crowd of more than 350 and an art exhibit of the Max May Memorial Art Contest entries of over 200 pieces.

Our deepest thanks to Melinda Doner for her tireless efforts in visiting classes and soliciting teachers to have their students enter the contest and transporting all the art to Temple Israel.

The art and essay contests are a culmination of area classes that study the Holocaust and give students an opportunity to express their feelings in a creative way.

We are hosting an exciting new program this summer, Shulchan Yarok, a Jewish CSA! Shuchan Yarok translates to “Green Table," and yarok can also be translated as “vegetables”.

CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. A CSA is a cooperative partnership between a farmer and a group of people who agree to prepurchase a share of the farmers produce for an entire season.

The CSA guarantees the farmer a secure market and gives members access to fresh, local sustainably grown produce at competitive prices, all while helping preserve farmland and build community. Members purchase a share, and then pick up their produce weekly at a local pick up site.

But what’s a Jewish CSA? Shulchan Yarok aims to build a community in Dayton where Jews from across the spectrum can gather around food sustainability and environmental issues.

Shulchan Yarok will help put Jewish purchasing power behind local farms, and bring healthy, locally grown food into Jewish homes. A Jewish CSA also focuses on Tzedakah. Shulchan Yarok will be purchasing a share and donating it to the local food bank, and members will have the opportunity to donate extra produce as well.

JFS: It’s a Family Affair Over the last two months, we have used this page to highlight the strategies and the first two phases of our newly adopted strategic plan.

Essentially, between now and the end of 2017, JFS is looking to build on its foundation and reputation in the community, adding services and programs for all age groups. JFS is “A Family Affair,” and we want to be representative of and serve our entire community while focusing on the following four strategies.

REFLECTIONS FROM PASSOVER SEDER at DAYTON CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION

About a week before Passover, the Federation received a request from Ohio Jewish Communities (OJC). We learned that there were two Jewish women at Dayton Correctional Institution (DCI) for whom DCI was seeking Passover supports. During the course of correspondence, I learned from the chaplain that the women would receive kosher-for-Passover meals through DCI’s food service provider, but there would be no seder plate provided. I explained to the chaplain that the seder plate was not something that individuals received; it is a part of a service full of rituals and traditions, typically at the dinner table in the home. Just two days before Passover, the chaplain and I determined that a seder was in order. The chaplain and I worked together. I sent the chaplain a list of what I would be bringing to DCI, and she secured all permissions and paperwork required for me to visit DCI and to conduct seders on the afternoons of Friday, April 22 and Saturday, April 23.

I will admit that I was nervous about the seders at DCI. Safety was not my concern. My concern was around the conversation about Passover and freedom. What would that conversation look like with women who were incarcerated? This particular issue never arose. When I arrived at the DCI chapel, the two women and I talked about their childhood and family Passover traditions as I set up the seder plate. While one woman was very knowledgeable about the Passover seder, the other woman was not; however, she was eager to participate and learn. We spent our time together talking about the symbolism of Passover, telling the story of Passover and reading from the haggadah. The women were grateful that they were able to participate in Passover seders.

I am truly humbled by my experience at DCI. By participating in the seders, the two women at DCI were able to fully appreciate what Passover is about, our religious freedom.

JFS Welcomes Sheri Froug Poch It is with great excitement that Jewish Family Services introduces Sheri Froug Poch as its new Program Coordinator!

Sheri may be a familiar face to some. She is a native Daytonian and a member of Temple Israel.

Her past employment and volunteer positions have touched so many different groups in the community, from those with severe mental disabilities and/or chemical dependencies, to college students in need of academic advising and support, to students in need of interventions and supports, to patients in hospice. Her background in counseling, warmth and compassion are a perfect match for JFS as we continue to implement and create new programs and services aligned to our new strategic plan!

Nancy will be a freshman this fall at the University of Dayton, where she plans to major in Business. After graduation, Nancy would like to work for a large corporation, focusing on money management.

Between her studies and extracurricular activities at Vandalia – Butler High School, Nancy is a busy young woman. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Student Council, Spanish Club, and Chorus. Nancy also plans to work at a local retirement community this summer. In spite of her busy schedule, Nancy maintains a 3.9 GPA. Education is very important to Nancy. She said “My family has always been supportive of my need for education, and have shown me that through dedication, hard work, and college, I can achieve my goals and be on the path for a better future.”

The Heuman Scholarship is made possible through a fund established by Bob and Vicky Heuman. Rachel Haug Gilbert Gastroenterologist Dr. David Novick had an essay published in Hippocampus Magazine’s March issue. The piece, Stakeholders, is a humorous take on electronic medical records.

On Thursday, June 23, Dayton’s Family Services will celebrate its 120th birthday, with a dinner, live jazz, silent and live auctions, and an exhibit, at America’s Packard Museum.

Members of the planning committee include Family Services Executive Director Bonnie Parish, past President Beth Adelman, Bonnie Beaman Rice, Pat Saphire, Pamela Schwartz, Marci Vandersluis, and Diane Rubin Williams. Retired Wright State Prof. of History Dr. Allan B. Spetter will deliver the dinner’s keynote. The late Helen Abramovitz will be honored for her many years of service and dedication to Family Services.

Jonah Sandler, founder and CEO of Scene75 Entertainment, was named one of the Dayton Business Journal’s 40 Under 40 for 2016.

At the annual Ohio Associated Press Awards Banquet on May 15, Scott Halasz was awarded second place for Best Feature Writer and third place for Best Sports Writer in the Division I category. Scott writes for the Xenia Daily Gazette, the Fairborn Daily Herald, and the Beavercreek News-Current. All three publications won third place for best special sports section, a team effort.

Scott Segalewitz received one of the Miami Valley Council Boy Scouts of America’s highest honors, the Silver Beaver Award, for his hours of volunteer service and leadership. Scott is also chair of the Miami Valley Council Jewish Committee on Scouting.

Michael Eli Natarus, son of Sharon and Mark Natarus, grandson of the late Maxine and Maurice Gordon, and Renee and Darrell Natarus, graduated from the University of Indianapolis with a doctor of physical therapy degree. He will start a one-year residency program at The University of Chicago Hospital in pediatrics.

Andrew Diamond graduated April 30 with a bachelor of fine arts degree from the University of CincinnatiCollege Conservatory of Music.

Andrew’s degree is in theatre design and production, with a concentration in lighting design and technology. He’ll spend the summer working at the Williamstown Theatre Festival in Massachusetts. Andrew is the son of Susan and Robert Diamond.

Ryan Snyder earned his Ph.D. in materials engineering from the University of Dayton.

His dissertation is titled Combinatorial Analysis of Thermoelectric Materials Using Pulsed Laser Deposition.

Kaitlin Bressler, daughter of Karen and Kevin Bressler, received her master’s degree in human resource management from The Ohio State University Fisher College of Business.

Kaitlin was one of two graduate students at OSU’s Fisher College of Business to be awarded a graduate assistantship position. She enjoyed working as a career consultant in the office of career management and as a teaching assistant. Kaitlin is thrilled to be working as a campus recruiter for Key Bank in Cleveland.

Alicia Ostrow graduated from Bowling Green State University with a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education. She is interviewing for teaching positions in the Dayton area.

She is the daughter of Anne and Mitchel Ostrow.

David Friedman graduated from the University of Dayton School of Law with his doctor of law degree, completed in just two years. He was one of eight students selected to the UDSL Moot Court team and represented the school in a competition at Brooklyn Law School against students from 35 other law schools. He’ll sit for the Ohio Bar Exam in July.

David’s parents are Gail and Charles Friedman.

Addison Caruso was honored in April for Outstanding Accomplishment and Achievement of Hebrew Language by Miami University’s Department of German, Russian, and Middle Eastern Languages. Addison, a sophomore in Miami University’s pre-law and public policy scholar’s program, will serve as an intern for the Democratic National Committee Headquarters in Washington, D.C. this summer.

His parents are Patty and Michael Caruso.

Hillel Academy, the Dayton area’s Jewish day school, was among three elementary schools that participated in the Aullwood Avian Art Contest at Aullwood Audubon on April 26. Temple Israel names new rabbi/educator Rabbi Tina Sobo will join Temple Israel’s clergy as its new rabbi/educator on July 1.

Sobo, who received her rabbinic ordination on May 21 from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati, most recently served as rabbinic intern for Temple Anshe Emeth in Piqua.

A native of Connecticut, Sobo received Rabbi Tina Sobo bachelor’s degrees from Jewish Theological Seminary and Columbia University, and a master’s degree in Jewish education from HUC-JIR in 2015.

A competitive swimmer who has participated in the World Maccabiah Games and Pan American Games, Sobo served for three years as director of Jewish life at the Union for Reform Judaism 6 Points Sports Academy in Greensboro, N.C. She has also taught and served as assistant director at Kulanu, the Reform Jewish High School in Cincinnati.

She and her husband, Matt, are the parents of one daughter, Stephanie.

Back to basics A new series

In Sydney Taylor’s 1950s All-of-a-Kind Family children’s novels, the Jewish family resembles an urban version of the Waltons or the Cleavers from Leave it to Beaver: all are traditionally nuclear, generally patriarchal with breadwinner fathers and homemaker mothers, and moderately religious.

However, these romanticized images of the 20th-century family are highly inaccurate

Rabbi Kerry Olitzky and Paul Golin, authors of How to Raise Jewish Children…Even When You’re Not Jewish Yourself concur: “The definition of a ‘Jewish family’ has changed forever. It is no longer (and really never was) two white, heterosexual, married, bornJewish parents with children.”

Never uniform, today’s Jewish families are more varied than ever. We can’t assume those raising Jewish children have Jewish parents and grandparents or strong Jewish backgrounds.

In growing numbers, modern parents include Jews by choice and non-Jews, as well as non-Jewish grandparents and relatives.

Families include parents who are single, cohabiting, married, divorced, remarried, and same-gender, while older parents and grandparents-asparents are not atypical. Dual career families are the norm, while extended families living nearby are not.

These days, American Jewish identity is more likely to be about living an ethical and moral life, engaging in social action, or satisfying intellectual curiosity than about Jewish law or ritual (Pew Research, A closer look at Jewish identity in Israel and the U.S. by Michael Lipka, 2016).

In the book Jewish Megatrends: Charting the Course of the

American Jewish Community, Rabbi Sid Schwarz describes this emerging “new American Jew” as “covenantal,” motivated by the ethical and moral tradition of Judaism, the values it brought to civilization, and its mandate to contribute positively to the world.

All of this is to illustrate that, despite the ever-changing configurations of Jewish families and notions of what defines Jewish identity, menschlichkeit — exhibiting the qualities of morality, integrity, dignity, and honor — remains central to living Jewishly and to being a better human being.

So how do we instill this quality of menschlichkeit, and the broader notion of Jewish identity, into our children and grandchildren?

Prepare to be a role model.

Because the single biggest influence on a child is his or her parents, Jewish identity and menschlichkeit begin with the parent.

The Talmud teaches, “What the child says in the street is his father’s words or his mother’s (BT 56b).”

Modern psychologists concur, noting that parental role modeling influences our children beginning in infancy. While you can (and will) learn and grow alongside your child; consider preparing Jewishly even before your new family member arrives.

Here are some approaches to consider.

Discover your own Jewish identity. Begin by identifying what you believe, enjoy and appreciate about Judaism.

What has the most meaning for you? Cultural traditions of food or folklore? Values addressing the environment or Israel? Ritual practices like Shabbat or blessings?

Stories are often a doorway to personal identity. My husband’s Oma (grandmother) escaped from Germany in the 1930s with a recipe for bereshis, her town’s traditional Shabbat bread.

Well into her 80s, Oma kneaded and braided a loaf each Friday for her Cincinnati family, sprinkling it with poppy seeds from a repur-

“Parents — not synagogues,

schools, camps, teachers, coaches, rabbis, or friends — transmit Jewish identity,” writes Doron Kornbluth in Raising Kids to Love Being Jewish. “If we want our kids to see that Judaism is relevant for adults and not just kids, they have to see us engaged in Jewish learning.”

Start a Jewish tradition. Use a cloth tablecloth or light Shabbat candles for Friday’s dinner, even if it’s just pizza. Donate to a Jewish charity on your birthday or special occasions. Put up a mezuzah. Each month, try out a new Jewish ethnic recipe.

Start small with something you enjoy and find ways to grow regularly.

Improve your ethical eye. In The Good Parent, Rabbi Lawrence Keleman notes that “If we want to raise ethical children, we have no choice but to work on developing our (own) character.” There’s no better time to start than now.

Jewish identity and menschlichkeit begin with parents, but they needn’t be traditional, scholarly or perfect.

The best qualities of role models are ongoing interest, enthusiasm, and a willingness to learn. As Kornbluth encourages, “By choosing one or two small (and enjoyable!) baby steps, you can have a major impact on your family's Jewish future.”

Literature to share Raising Kids to Love Being Jewish by Doron Kornbluth. This is the best introduction to Jewish parenting for today’s families that I have read. Limited to a few basic themes, its practical advice and useful strategies are illustrated by fascinating anecdotes. A quick read, this guide is sure to become a favored resource. Highly recommended, especially for new Jewish parents.

Hidden by Loic Dauvillier, Marc Lizano and Greg Salsedo. In this award-winning graphic novel, a grandmother shares her recollections of life during the German occupation of France with her little granddaughter.

Alligator Candy is Kushner’s attempt, prompted by the parole of one of the two men convicted of Jon’s murder, to process a lifetime of remembering and searching for answers. It’s a reckoning for which he and his family often draw on the strength of their Jewish faith and community.

As Close to Us as Breathing

(Lee Boudreaux Books/Little, Brown & Company) By Elizabeth Poliner The latest effort from novelist and poet Elizabeth Poliner is a multigenerational epic that covers nearly a century but centers on one tragic summer — specifically 1948 — in a predominantly Jewish shoreline retreat in Connecticut known as “Bagel Beach,” where three sisters and their families share a cottage.

As told by Molly, 12 at the time, a horrible accident shatters the idyll, and sets in motion a lifetime of grief and guilt for this tight-knit, religious family.

Beyond exploring the inner lives of one vivacious and volatile clan, Poliner’s novel warmly captures the pivotal, post-Holocaust period when American Jews found themselves so intensely wrenched between ancient custom and modern opportunity.

Barbra Streisand: Redefining Beauty, Femininity, and Power

(Yale University Press) By Neal Gabler It’s no secret that Barbra Streisand — a cultural icon who transcends show business — is Jewish. Yet of the many profiles and biographies dedicated to her, this might be the first that so intensely examines her life and illustrious career through the prism of her Jewish identity. Neil Gabler, an awardwinning journalist, historian and film critic, argues that the celebrated singeractress-producer-director — at first dismissed and even detested for “acting too Jewish” and “looking too Jewish” — would brilliantly play her Jewishness into a symbol for outsiderness.

As such, Gabler writes, she isn’t merely one of the world’s most talented and successful performers, but an “avenger for anyone who felt marginalized and powerless.”

From moments of love to explosions of violence, the clash between tradition and modernity — along with the burning desire to belong — is the collection’s common cauldron.

The Bridge Ladies

(HarperCollins) By Betsy Lerner “Facebook may connect us across the world and throughout history, but it won’t deliver a pot roast.” It’s with this bittersweet reflection on lost connections that Betsy Lerner, a poet and literary agent, introduces the group portrait of the five members of her mother’s 50-year-old weekly bridge game.

Over the course of many Monday afternoons, the author finds common ground with these ladies she had known for decades but only at a distance, learning a little about bridge and a lot about life and loyalty — much of it funny, some of it heartrending.

Bridge, of course, becomes the memoir’s ultimate metaphor, as Lerner finds in the experience a way to cross the long-lingering personal divide between mother and daughter.

Don’t Let My Baby Do Rodeo

(HarperCollins) By Boris Fishman When their 8-year-old adopted son, Max, turns “feral”— consorting with

wild animals and eating grass — Maya and Alex Rubin venture west of New Jersey for the first time in their lives to track down Max’s birth parents in Montana.

Fishman’s novel intertwines the journey narrative with the story of how Maya, an ambitious Ukrainian exchange student, and Alex, the somewhat spoiled son of Russian immigrants, met 20 years earlier. The result is a touching portrayal of a marriage and family, as well as a meditation on what it means to dream, to sacrifice and to fit in.

This is Fishman’s second novel following his celebrated 2014 debut, A Replacement Life.

The Lost Book of Moses: Hunt for the World’s Oldest Bible

(Ecco/HarperCollins) By Chanan Tigay Anyone who is a fan of adventure, history, mystery, archaeology or biblical criticism will have at least one reason to enjoy this nonfiction thriller.

In the summer of 1883, an artifact hunter named Moses Wilhelm Shapira made international headlines by claiming to have discovered the oldest copy of the Bible in the world. He was soon accused of forgery and, scandalized, took his own life.

The thing is, archaeologists now believe Shapira’s manuscript was real, perhaps the first Dead Sea Scroll — if only they could find it. Chanan Tigay, an award-winning Jerusalem-born journalist and son of a prominent biblical scholar, journeyed to eight countries on four continents over the last five years in his own obsessive hunt for the manuscript and the secrets of the man who uncovered it.

New York’s Yiddish Theater: From the Bowery to Broadway (Columbia University Press) Edited by Edna Nahshon A century before Hamilton made a certain immigrant hip again, there was a vibrant and groundbreaking New York theatre scene created entirely by and for immigrants — the Eastern European Jews who filled the houses of “Yiddish Broadway” on the Lower East Side.

Edna Nahshon, a professor of theatre and drama at the Jewish Theological Seminary, captures its heyday in this scholarly scrapbook full of vivid illustrations that buttress essays from leading critics and historians (including Nahshon herself).

As a whole, this tribute and testament reveals how the Yiddish theatre’s innovations, energy and engagement with a range of relevant, controversial topics would ultimately influence all facets of the American stage.

Septimania

(The Overlook Press) By Jonathan Levi For his first novel since 1992’s critically acclaimed A Guide for the Perplexed, Jonathan Levi has created an exhilarating epic that crisscrosses the borders of the world and of the imagination.

An English organ-tuner discovers he is the heir to the Kingdom of Septimania, a historically real territory that was given by Charlemagne to the Jews of eighth-century France.

Over a fantastical halfcentury that stretches through the present into the future, this newly crowned “King of the Jews” will encounter Pope John Paul II, Haroun al Rashid of Arabian Nights fame, an elephant that changes color, one of the 9/11 bombers and even a seed from the original Tree of Knowledge (among other things).

Who Stole My Spear?

(Random House) By Tim Samuels Tim Samuels, an award-winning British documentarian and broadcaster, offers a humorous but brutally honest look at modern masculinity, reflecting upon everything from relationships and fatherhood to corporate culture, porn and the rise of ISIS. The author occasionally draws on his Jewish background, such as using his own Bar Mitzvah as the jumping-off point for a chapter on how all young men need some rite of passage.

The book is at its best when piercing long-fortified stereotypes and calling for a new definition — that is, no definition — of what it means to be “normal” today.

The ultimate chocolate babka Fold long roll in half and brush top of roll with egg wash.

Carefully crumble two tablespoons more filling over the roll and twist folded roll a few more times.

Place twisted roll into prepared baking pan (it will be a little messy) Brush the top of babka with egg wash. Crumble a third of streusel topping over each loaf.

Loosely cover each pan with plastic wrap, and let stand in a warm place 20 to 30 minutes Bake babkas, rotating halfway through, until golden.

After about 35 minutes test for doneness. Toothpick should come out clean of dough when done. Remove from oven and transfer to wire racks until cool.

Remove from pans; serve.

A book about Israeli cuisine won book of the year at the prestigious James Beard Awards for food writing. Michael Solomonov and Steven Cook’s Zahav: A World of Israeli Cooking won Book of the Year and was also named best book in the international category at the James Beard Foundation‘s 2016 Book, Broadcast & Journalism Awards on April 26 in New York. In addition, NOPI: The Cookbook, co-authored by Israeli chef Yotam Ottolenghi, won in the Cooking from a Professional Point of View category. Solomonov, an Israeli-American, and Cook run the popular, award-winning Israeli restaurant Zahav (Hebrew for gold) in Philadelphia, which opened in 2008. Zahav is part cookbook and part memoir. Solomonov also operates several other restaurants in Philadelphia, including a hummus spot called Dizengoff. According to Philly. com, Dizengoff is about to open a New York branch in Manhattan’s Chelsea Market. Solomonov was the 2011 James Beard Award winner Michael for best chef, Mid-Atlantic.

Add the 1½ sticks butter and process until well combined; set filling aside.

To make the streusel topping: In a large bowl, combine sugar, flour, and butter. Using a fork, stir until fully combined with clumps ranging in size from crumbs to one inch.

To assemble: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Generously butter your 9-X-5-X-23/4-inch loaf pan.

In a small bowl beat the remaining egg with the tablespoon of cream, set bowl aside Punch back the dough, and transfer to a clean surface. Let rest five minutes. Cut into three equal pieces. Keep two pieces covered with plastic wrap while working with the remaining piece. On a generously floured surface, roll dough out into a 16-inch square; it should be about 1/8-inch thick.

Brush edges with egg wash.

Crumble a third of the chocolate filling evenly over dough, leaving a 1/4-inch border. Roll dough up tightly like a jelly roll. Pinch ends together to seal.

Pour warm milk into a small bowl. Sprinkle yeast and pinch of sugar over milk, stir lightly; let stand until foamy, about five minutes.

In a bowl of electric mixer with paddle attachment, mix together 3/4 cup sugar, two eggs, vanilla, and egg yolks.

Add yeast mixture and lightly mix to combine.

In a bowl combine flour and salt. Add to egg mixture, and beat on low speed until almost all the flour is incorporated, about 30 seconds. Change to the dough hook. Add two sticks of butter, and beat until flour mixture and butter are completely incorporated, and a smooth, soft dough that’s slightly sticky when squeezed is formed, about 10 minutes.

Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface, and knead a few turns until smooth. Butter a large bowl.

Place dough in bowl, and turn to coat. Cover tightly with plastic wrap. Set aside in a warm place to rise until doubled in bulk, about one hour.

Dr. Fritz was a retired biochemistry professor from Wright State University and was a professor at Union Institute. Dr. Fritz is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Evelyn; daughter and son-inlaw, Cheryl and Jay Agranoff of Columbus; son, Will Fritz of Chicago; grandchildren, Max, Sam and Mindy Agranoff; nieces, nephews and cousins; Evelyn Fritz’s sisters and brothers-in-law; and many other relatives and friends. The rise of the ‘alt-right’

The “alternative right,” to give its full name, is a toxic cluster of blogs, websites, and one-person “think tanks” that fuses old-style white power nationalism with what its followers mistakenly regard as witty ripostes to political correctness on race and gender.

Many of these people are Holocaust deniers, baiters of the disabled, and similar malcontents. They have all lined up behind Trump.

Are Jewish supporters of Trump really going to employ the same arguments as those on the far left, soothing themselves that we have nothing to worry about because his daughter converted to Judaism and some of his best friends are Jews?

If there’s one lesson we have learned in dealing with the left-wing anti-Zionist onslaught of the last decade,

it’s that some very ugly fringe memes can suddenly emerge in mainstream discourse. There is no reason why that should be any different on the right.

That Jew-hatred is not confined to Trump’s supporters — the billionaire Koch brothers, who are opposed to Trump, are financing a conference featuring the antisemitic academics John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt, authors of the discredited book The Israel Lobby — is even more cause to act quickly to prevent the mainstreaming of this poison.

Here, therefore, is my challenge to Donald Trump’s Jewish supporters: Will you seize the opportunity to display the same toughness you’ve shown toward the left with your favored presidential candidate?

Will you tell Trump that he needs to ditch this faction of his supporters? Your answer is eagerly awaited.
