Kids ‘N Community Foundation

Dear Hurricanes fans and friends: When the Hurricanes arrived in North Carolina in 1997, they came with a family. Some truly great people moved with the team and made this their home, from players and coaches to broadcasters and equipment managers. With less fanfare than the players, one very important staff member by the name of Doris E. Barksdale also relocated here. Since our arrival in the Triangle, our family has grown bigger and stronger. But there isn’t a single member of that family whose life was not touched by Doris. Doris passed away in April, but her spirit lives on through the many people she influenced and inspired, and through the Carolina Hurricanes Kids ‘N Community Foundation to which she was devoted. Along with serving on the Foundation’s Board of Directors for more than a decade, Doris helped to identify community organizations that would most benefit from an association with the Carolina Hurricanes. She founded the popular and successful “Pick Up a Book and Read” program, which gives third, fourth and fifth grade students incentives to read. Last year, students read a combined total of more than 4.7 million pages through her program. That is the type of impact that drives the Kids ‘N Community Foundation. In 2012-13, the Foundation donated $436,600 in cash to 26 different children’s charities in North Carolina, bringing the team’s and Foundation’s donation total to $11.5 million in cash and in-kind services since 1997. The team’s annual Casino Night & Wine Tasting, sponsored by PNC, had a record-breaking year, raising $276,000. Though the shortened season limited events during the first half of the season, the Hurricanes began a new initiative – Canes Care – through which 70 full-time staff members donated 490 hours of volunteer time to North Carolina non-profit organizations. The success of our community efforts requires the commitment of our immediate family – the players, coaches and staff of the Hurricanes. Equally important is the assistance of our extended family – community partners, whose contributions allow us to help improve the lives of children across North Carolina. Doris was a strong, positive and influential member of our family, part of the foundation on which this organization was built. Now it is up to the rest of us to carry on her legacy. Thank you for your continued support of the Carolina Hurricanes and the Kids ‘N Community Foundation. Sincerely,

Jim Rutherford President and General Manager, Carolina Hurricanes Hockey Club

Cash Donations The 2012-2013 season was a successful charitable giving year for the Carolina Hurricanes Kids ‘N Community Foundation. Thanks to the support of players, coaches, front office staff, corporate sponsors, and the generous fan base who participated in fundraisers throughout the year, the Kids ‘N Community Foundation donated $436,600 in cash grants to 26 different children’s charities and foundations in North Carolina. Grant funds provide qualified non-profit children’s organizations the support to meet the health and education needs of children of under-served populations in our community. To ensure that grant funds are used appropriately, all grant recipients must define how the cash grant will be used, provide updates on the progress of funded programs, and be willing to host on-site visits.

The Carolina Hurricanes have donated more than

$11.5 million

in cash and in-kind services to charitable organizations since the team moved to North Carolina in 1997.

Skate with the Canes On February 15, 2013, the sold-out Skate with the Canes event raised $36,000 for the Kids ‘N Community Foundation. Caniacs of all ages took advantage of the opportunity to directly interact with Hurricanes players in an on-ice skating session, photograph session with players in the locker room and weight room, and an autograph station.

It’s nice to come out and meet the fans on a personal level. They show us so much support, so meeting them is definitely the coolest part.

Eric’s Entourage For the seventh year in a row, Carolina Hurricanes Captain Eric Staal and his wife, Tanya, showed their support for kids in our community by providing a 12-person, all-inclusive luxury suite every home game for non-profit children’s organizations. Students at the Governor Morehead School for the Blind were thrilled to attend a Carolina Hurricanes game as guests of Eric and Tanya Staal this year, talking about it for weeks afterwards. We teach our students to experience all of their senses as best they can, and this crowd setting gave them a unique opportunity to do exactly that for sure. We appreciate the thoughtfulness in making this possible for a very deserving group of young people.

The loveable ice hog made 171 appearances in the Triangle and surrounding communities at schools, community events, churches, hospitals, birthday parties, awareness walks, and other charitable events throughout the year. CYAH: Canes Youth and Amateur Hockey In an effort to strengthen our involvement in the local youth and amateur hockey community, the Carolina Hurricanes created Canes Youth and Amateur Hockey (CYAH) during the 2006-2007 season. CYAH continues to have a presence in, and provide sponsorship to, the local community in order to grow youth hockey at all skill levels. The number of local youth hockey players has increased since the program’s inauguration, and the numbers continue to climb. With the lead of former Hurricane Shane Willis, the CYAH program has steadily increased its initiatives and investments in local youth hockey over the past year. CYAH utilized hockey to build personal character and foster teamwork and dedication in young players. It has promoted interest in youth and amateur hockey programs throughout the state of North Carolina, and hosted many major hockey clinics in-house each season.

In-School Hockey Clinics At the end of its tenth consecutive year, the in-school hockey clinic partnership that the Carolina Hurricanes has with Wake County Public School System tallied visits to 35 schools for clinics, teaching close to 10,000 local students how to play hockey. These clinics combine hockey education and character building activities that focus on teamwork, leadership and sportsmanship. Students who attended the clinics were always excited to learn a new sport, and the opportunity to promote hockey among local youth directly aligns with CYAH’s initiatives.
