Career Connections NY TIMES SHOWS WOMEN ARE COMING OUT AHEAD IN THE RECESSION A Milestone for Working Women? 1/14/09 By Casey B. Mulligan The terrible bottom line of last Friday’s job report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics did not surprise many people — there were many fewer jobs in December 2008 than in the previous month. Much less noticed, however, was Friday’s breakdown by sex of employment declines before December. Is it possible that one legacy of this recession is that women become a majority of the work force for the first time in American history? As Layoffs Surge, Women May Pass Men in Job Force 2/6/09 By Catherine Rampell With the recession on the brink of becoming the longest in the postwar era, a milestone may be at hand: Women are poised to surpass men on the nation’s payrolls, taking the majority for the first time in American history. The reason has less to do with gender equality than with where the ax is falling... 82 percent of the job losses have befallen men, who are heavily represented in distressed industries...Women tend to be employed in areas like education and health care, which are less sensitive to economic ups and downs… Women may be safer in their jobs, but tend to find it harder to support a family… Even in full-time jobs, women earn 80 cents for each dollar of their male counterparts’ income, according to the government data. In This Recession, More Men Are Losing Jobs 3/13/09 By Floyd Norris The unemployment rates for college-educated men and women are still relatively low, but both are rising. Over the 12 months, the unemployment rate of men with college degrees rose to 4.1 percent, from 2 percent; the figure for educated women went from 2.1 percent to 3.9 percent. Over all, the unemployment rate for women of 25 and older was 6.2 percent in February 2009, while that for men was 9 percent. That difference, of 2.8 percentage points, was the largest since the Bureau of Labor Statistics began compiling the numbers in 1948. For full articles, visit www.nytimes.com.
