Tannini fini ed eleganti, spiccate sfumature di arancia che invadono l’intero palato. In equilibrio come un funambolo, tra potenza e raffinatezza, compie la sua missione rasentando la perfezione. Da bere subito o da conservare.

BARONE RICASOLI CENIPRIMO CHIANTI CLASSICO GRAN SELEZIONE 2016 Country Italy, Region Tuscany, Vintage 2016 Score 99 A beautiful nose with tangerine peel, strawberries, rose petals, boysenberries, cranberries, red plums, red cherries and dark spices. Very grainy and refined on the palate with a real kick from the orange-rind undertones that permeate the entire palate. Tiptoes like a tightrope walker between power and finesse and executes its mission nearly to perfection. Drink now or hold.

“I monovarietali di Barone Ricasoli sono veramente straordinari”

Torniamo a scrivere dei tre cru di Sangiovese prima del previsto: nell’ultimo post di appena tre settimane fa – il terzo su questo argomento che ci sta tanto a cuore -, vi avevamo svelato in che modo si presentano Colledilà, Roncicone e CeniPrimo nelle preziose confezioni numerate, nel post precedente un racconto dettagliato sui tre suoli delle tre vigne omonime, in quello ancora precedente, il primo dunque dei tre, abbiamo iniziato a parlare della ricerca ultradecennale che ha portato poi alla luce i tre vini. Ora però non possiamo fare a meno di condividere la bella notizia ricevuta pochi giorni fa che non riguarda solo i tre cru, ma anche il nostro vino iconico, il Castello di Brolio Chianti Classico Gran Selezione.

“Barone Ricasoli’s single vineyard are truly exceptional”

James Suckling ha appena completato il ciclo di degustazioni dei vini italiani sui quali, quest’anno, ha preferito concentrarsi prima del previsto, nella sua base in Toscana. Sono stati degustati centinaia di vini rossi da territori prestigiosi di tutta Italia da gennaio fino ad aprile così da arrivare a contarne quasi 2 mila e 500 e, tra questi, ce ne sono stati alcuni letteralmente straordinari (cit.), così come leggiamo nel suo comunicato, che prosegue in questo modo:

Il Chianti Classico 2015 e 2016 si dimostra eccezionale We’re revisiting our three Sangiovese Crus earlier than we’d planned, after already writing three posts about this topic that’s so close to our hearts. In the most recent post, only three weeks ago, we had revealed how Colledilà, Roncicone and CeniPrimo had been packaged in keepsake numbered boxes. In the post just before that we’d offered a detailed look into the soil types of the three vineyards where these wines are born and whose names are on the labels. And in the one before that, the first, we had begun speaking about the research, begun more than a decade before, which has brought these three wines to life. Now we can do no less than share the wonderful news we received a few days ago about not only our three Crus, but also our iconic wine Castello di Brolio Chianti Classico Gran Selezione.

Questa primavera, abbiamo dedicato la maggior parte del nostro tempo alla Toscana e abbiamo trovato molti vini fantastici da due grandi annate consecutive, 2015 e 2016 (…).

La regione del Chianti Classico presenta dei vini con un alto livello qualitativo, quest’anno (…). I vini ottenuti da singole vigne (cru) sono una vera sorpresa. Per esempio, i monovarietali Chianti Classico Gran Selezione di Barone Ricasoli sono veramente straordinari, giovani sangiovese in purezza dalla grande personalità e di qualità superlativa. CeniPrimo Chianti Classico Gran Selezione 2016 (99 punti), CeniPrimo Chianti Classico Gran Selezione 2015 (98 punti), e Roncione Chianti Classico Gran Selezione 2016 (98 punti) sono notevoli esempi di una denominazione che mette in rilievo la grandezza del terroir e non sono affatto frutto di una operazione di marketing. Speriamo che molti altri vini – comprese le denominazioni territoriali dei rossi come Gaiole o Panzano – possano dare lustro al Chianti Classico così da assimilarlo a una nuova Borgogna d’Italia.

James Suckling has just completed his tasting round of Italian wines, which he chose to concentrate on earlier than expected from his base in Tuscany. Scores of red wines from prestigious growing areas were tasted from January to April, for a total of nearly 2,500, and among these there were some literally exceptional (cit.) wines, as can be seen in his announcement, which continue like this:

2015, 2016 Chianti Classico prove exceptional Tuscany took the biggest share of our tasting time this Spring and we found many fantastic wines from two great back to back vintages, 2015 and 2016 (…). The region of Chianti Classico in general is on a high for quality wines this year (…). A range of single vineyard wines are proving real knockouts too. For example, Barone Ricasoli’s single vineyard Chianti Classico Gran Seleziones are truly exceptional young and pure sangioveses with distinctive character and superlative quality. Chianti Classico Ceniprimo Gran Selezione 2016 (99 points), Chianti Classico Ceniprimo Gran Selezione 2015 (98 points), and Chianti Classico Roncione Gran Selezione 2016 (98 points) are shining examples of the appellation finally emphasizing the greatness of its terroir and not just some contrived marketing idea. We hope more of these wines – including village designations for reds such as the towns Gaiole or Panzano – will highlight how Chianti Classico is akin to Italy’s new Burgundy.

CeniPrimo Chianti Classico Gran Selezione 2016 è stato collocato al quarto posto della classifica generale: dopo i tre vini con 100 punti, il cru di Sangiovese CeniPrimo trova posto tra i sette vini (solo!) che hanno ottenuto 99 punti, unico Chianti Classico presente in questa sezione. La classifica prosegue con i vini che hanno ottenuto 98 punti (24 etichette): di nuovo Ceni Primo (ma stavolta 2015) e Roncicone 2016 sono stati inseriti nella sezione. Ancora 24 etichette a 97 punti, tra cui ben 3 tra i nostri vini.

CeniPrimo Chianti Classico Gran Selezione 2016 has been placed fourth in the general classification: after three wines with 100 points, the Sangiovese CeniPrimo Cru is placed among the seven wines obtaining 99 points, and it’s the only Chianti Classico in that section. The classification continues with the wines that obtained 98 points (24 labels): once again CeniPrimo (but 2015 this time) and Roncicone 2016 are at the top of this section. Then once again 24 wines which received 97 points, and yet again three of these are ours.

Here’s that information, and these are great satisfactions for us!

BARONE RICASOLI RONCICONE CHIANTI CLASSICO GRAN SELEZIONE 2016 Paese Italia, Regione Toscana, Annata 2016 Punteggio 98 Amo la purezza del frutto in questa Gran Selezione che mostra sentori di ibisco, scorza d’arancia, violetta, lavanda, tè Earl Grey, chiodi di garofano, tabacco e terra bagnata. Elegante e scorrevole con tannini flessuosi ma strutturati, acidità intensamente rinfrescante e un finale lungo e complesso. Sangiovese superbo. Da bere nel 2023.

BARONE RICASOLI RONCICONE CHIANTI CLASSICO GRAN SELEZIONE 2016 Country Italy, Region Tuscany, Vintage 2016 Score 98 I love the purity of fruit to this Gran Selezione that shows hibiscus, orange peel, violets, lavender, early grey tea, cloves, tobacco and wet earth. Elegant and flowing with lithe yet structured tannins, intensely refreshing acidity and a long, complex finish. Superb sangiovese. Drink in 2023.

BARONE RICASOLI COLLEDILÀ CHIANTI CLASSICO GRAN SELEZIONE 2016 Paese Italia, Regione Toscana, Annata 2016 Punteggio 97 Un bel naso di prugne scure, vaniglia, goudron, tabacco e spezie. Corposo e molto potente con tannini incisivi, con una bella acidità e frutto ben integrati. La complessità e la profondità nel finale sono mozzafiato. Da bere nel 2023.

Full-bodied and very powerful with punchy tannins, but some real integration to the agile fruit and acidity. The complexity and depth at the end is breathtaking. Drink in 2023.

BARONE RICASOLI CASTELLO DI BROLIO CHIANTI CLASSICO GRAN SELEZIONE 2016 Paese Italia, Regione Toscana, Annata 2016 Punteggio 97 Bella presenza di garofano, ma è il frutto a spiccare davvero, offrendo intensi sentori di ibisco, scorza d’arancia, mirtilli rossi, basilico tailandese e cioccolato fondente. Di corpo e dalla struttura piena, raffinato con una decisa presenza di bacche rosse e toni sapidi. Finale lungo e minerale. Da bere nel 2024.

BARONE RICASOLI CASTELLO DI BROLIO CHIANTI CLASSICO GRAN SELEZIONE 2016 Country Italy, Region Tuscany, Vintage 2016 Score 97 There’s lots of clove character here, but the fruit really shines through, offering up intense hibiscus, orange rind, cranberries, Thai basil and dark chocolate. Full-bodied and really structured and refined with an agile core of red berries and savory undertones. Long but minerally on the finish.

LA RICETTA DEL RAGÙ DEL BARONE The recipe for the Baron’s ragù 16 maggio, 2019

We began recounting the history of Brolio in a post last January, followed by two further posts in February and then April, and we’re now at part four. Today we’ll continue by sharing the fascinating description of the Castle as found in texts in our private library.

Behind the Chapel, there is the ancient Castle Keep. With its crenellated towers, it offered the protection needed during extreme fighting and served as the residence to the feudal lords. The highest tower could be isolated from the other buildings by raising a drawbridge, in case a final and desperate defense of the castle were needed.

Moving alongside the group of towers, following the walkway, you arrive at the wall walkway that crowns the bastions. The powerful castle walls are immediately visible, their irregular pentagonal shape and careful construction allowed defense from the bastions of all sides against attacks. According to a study by the military historian General Raffaele Cadorna, this would be the earliest example in Italy of bastioned walls. The walls are 14 meters high on average and up to 16 on the western side, with a total circumference of about 450 meters. Under the wall walkway and in the rest of the rampart there were a number of intricate underground passageways (no longer practicable), which led to numerous arrow slits. This allowed the men to move rapidly to defend the Castle while still remaining undercover. The lower half of the walls were built as an escarpment and the upper half as perfectly perpendicular, and they were originally surrounded by moats. The earliest entry was quite a bit smaller and more narrow: the keystone from this original gate can be seen embedded in the external wall beside the current entrance, put there to show the height of the original entry to the Castle.

La storia di Brolio, iniziata con un post dello scorso gennaio e poi raccontata in altre due puntate, a febbraio e ad aprile, è arrivata alla sua quarta parte: oggi, proseguiamo a condividere la seducente descrizione del Castello così come rinvenuta nei testi della biblioteca privata.

Dietro la Cappella s’innalza l’antico Cassero che con le sue torri merlate costituiva il centro di estrema resistenza del Castello e la residenza del feudatario: la torre più alta era isolabile dalle rimanenti costruzioni per mezzo di un ponte levatoio ed era il luogo di disperata e ultima difesa del Castello. Si costeggia ora il gruppo delle torri e percorrendo l’apposito vialetto si scende al cammino di ronda che corona gli spalti. Si potrà subito osservare la poderosa struttura delle mura di cinta, a pianta pentagonale irregolare e la loro accorta costruzione che permette dai bastioni la difesa d’infilata di tutti i lati (secondo uno studio storico-militare del Gen. Raffaele Cadorna sarebbe questo il primo esempio in Italia di mura bastionate). L’altezza delle mura è in media di 14 metri e arriva fino ai 16 nel lato ovest: lo sviluppo totale è di circa 450 metri. Sotto il cammino di ronda e nel resto del terrapieno numerosi e intricati sotterranei (non più praticabili), facenti capo a numerose feritoie, permettevano un rapido spostarsi della difesa e un maggior riparo: le mura, costruite a scarpata per la metà inferiore e perfettamente perpendicolari per la metà superiore, erano anticamente circondate da fossati e il portone d’ingresso era originariamente assai più stretto e più basso: di fianco all’attuale portone si può vedere incastrata nelle mura esterne la chiave di volta dell’antico accesso, ivi murata a dimostrazione dell’altezza della porta originale di accesso al Castello. La collina sulla quale si erge il Castello scende qui rapidamente, ricoperta da un manto di conifere, nel sottostante Borro delle Ripi ed è sovrastata da presso da scoscesi monti (Monte Castelli, Monte Martini, Cetramura) dove tuttora si possono scorgere ruderi di antiche fortificazioni che completavano il sistema difensivo di Brolio.

The hill on which the Castle rises is here covered with conifers, and descends very rapidly to the Borro delle Ripi below. Close behind it there are steep mountains (Monte Castelli, Monte Martini, Cetramura) where even today there are ruins of the ancient fortifications that completed the defensive system of Brolio.

Turning right along the wall walkway, you quickly reach the main side of the Castle (south side), where there is a vast panorama contrasting vividly with the previous harshness. On the horizon to the left, between the east and the south, there are Monte Cetona and Monte Radicofani, to the south the bulk of Monte Amiata, towards the southwest the towers and bell towers of Siena, more to the right the mountains of Volterra, and below, nearby, the valley of the Arbia River.

You are now in front of the manor house constructed with bricks and stone in the Siena Gothic style, restored and in part built for the Baron Bettino Ricasoli (1860) based on a project by the architect Marchetti from Siena. On the wall of the building, to the left, a plaque commemorates the visit made on 22 April 1863 by His Majesty, King Vittorio Emanuele II, first King of Italy.

His is a name connected with the history of the Italian Risorgimento for the leading role, which he played as a patriot, statesman and private citizen.

Returning once again to the wall walkway and continuing, you reach a small corner tower, on the high western side of the Castle, with a view over an undulating horizon.

Continuing even more, you return to the northern side, looking down on the entranceway, where you pass over the entrance door. Then turn right and you are once again at the Castle.

Tomorrow, 17 May, the menu at the Osteria di Brolio will be substituted with the second 2019 menu. However, in all the menus that will alternate from now until the end of the year, there are always some essential dishes. Our visitors return to Brolio because of these, and they expect to find them here so they can order them and try them once again. One of these, actually the foremost among them all, is our pasta dish, Tagliatelle with the Baron’s ragù. That’s why we’d like to share the recipe of this mouthwatering and fragrant ragù with you. Francesco Ricasoli has been preparing it this way for many years and he gave the recipe to the chef at our Osteria restaurant.

Here it is, just as he wrote it down:

Domani, 17 maggio, il menu dell’Osteria di Brolio verrà sostituito con il secondo menu della stagione 2019. Ci saranno sempre, però, in tutti i menu che si alterneranno fino alla fine dell’anno, alcuni piatti fondamentali, che sono quelli per cui i nostri clienti tornano a trovarci, quelli che si aspettano di trovare per ordinare e assaporare: uno di questi, il primo tra tutti in realtà, il nostro piatto di Tagliatelle al ragù del Barone.

Allora perché non condividere con voi anche la ricetta di questo ragù succulento e profumato che Francesco Ricasoli prepara ormai da tanti anni e di cui ha fornito la ricetta allo chef della nostra Osteria? Eccola di seguito, proprio come scritta da lui.

Ragù toscano per condire tagliatelle o pasta corta per 6 persone circa, ricetta di Francesco Ricasoli Ingredienti: ½ kg di vitellone magro macinato grosso, 150 g di fegatini di pollo, 150 g di carne di maiale, 2 belle carote, 2 grandi cipolle rosse, 6 bei gambi di sedano, 4 spicchi di aglio ross, 2 bicchieri di vino bianco, purché buono, 300 g di pomodori freschi, Olio Extra Vergine d’Oliva. Abbondante prezzemolo, un po’ di origano e basilico. Sale e Pepe.

Ragù Toscano for tagliatelle or other types of pasta, serves 6, recipe by Francesco Ricasoli Ingredients: 1 lb. chopped lean veal, 1/3 lb. chopped chicken livers, 1/3 lb. chopped pork, 2 carrots, 2 large red onions, 6 celery stalks, 4 cloves red garlic, 2 cups good white wine, 3/4 lb. fresh chopped tomatoes, Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Large bunch parsley, fresh oregano and basil. Salt and pepper.

Tritare grossolanamente le carote, il sedano, le cipolle, l’aglio e farli rosolare in un filo d’olio extra vergine d’oliva (possibilmente Castello di Brolio Olio Extra Vergine DOP del Chianti Classico) dentro una pentola larga e fonda finché non si saranno ridotti di volume. Aggiungere, a quel punto, le carni tritate e cuocere a lungo, badando a muovere spesso con un ramaiolo di legno e, quando la carne sarà ben cotta e comincerà ad “attaccarsi” sul fondo, continuare a rimestare il sugo senza interruzione finché quasi (ho detto quasi!) sarà bruciacchiato sul fondo della pentola. A quel punto e solo a quel punto, a fuoco vivo, aggiungere velocemente i due bicchieri di vino bianco, coprire la pentola, e dopo qualche decina di secondi, moderare la fiamma, far evaporare e muovere con il mestolo di legno il fondo della pentola per “staccare” il sugo attaccaticcio, finché non scivolerà via libero sul fondo. A fuoco basso e dopo che il vino sarà evaporato (non lo sentirete più al naso), aggiungere i pomodori tagliati a tocchetti e finire di cuocere fino a raggiungere la consistenza necessaria. A cottura ultimata aggiungere sale e pepe quanto basta. Scegliete la pasta che più vi aggrada (a mio avviso le tagliatelle sono perfette), cuocetela al dente, scolatela nel piatto da portata e versateci sopra il ragù caldo. C’è solo da girare bene il sugo e portare tutto subito in tavola. Il formaggio grattugiato è totalmente superfluo.

Coarsely chop the carrots, celery, onions and garlic and sauté together in a bit of olive oil (preferably Castello di Brolio Olio Extra Vergine DOP del Chianti Classico) in a wide heavy pot until vegetables are tender. Add meat and cook slowly, stirring frequently with a wooden spoon until the meat is cooked and starts to stick to the bottom.

Continue stirring until the meat is almost burnt (but not burnt!). Exactly at this moment, quickly add the white wine, maintain medium flame and cover. After about 10 seconds, reduce the flame to simmer and stir, loosening the meat from the bottom of the pan and wait until wine evaporates (you will not smell it anymore). Then add tomatoes and continue to cook until the sauce reaches a good consistency. Season with salt and pepper. Choose your favorite pasta (in my opinion, tagliatelle are perfect) and cook al dente. Drain and immediately toss with ragù and serve. You can add grated cheese if you like but it is not necessary.

To complete this dish, you will need about 3-4 hours. It can be kept in the fridge for a few days or can be put in the freezer in portions ready for any emergency. And you know how it goes, in those emergencies, memorable dinners can be had with this ragù accompanied with a great year of Brolio Chianti Classico!

Questa ricetta, se svolta correttamente, necessita di almeno tre o quattro ore per essere completata: potete poi conservare il ragù in frigo per qualche giorno o riporlo nel freezer, porzionato in quantità per una o due persone, così da averlo sempre pronto anche nei momenti di emergenza. E si sa, nei succitati momenti di emergenza, succede anche che vengano fuori cenette memorabili con il ragù di scorta e una bottiglia di Brolio Chianti Classico.

LA RICETTA DEL RAGÙ DEL BARONE The recipe for the Baron’s ragù 16 maggio, 2019

We began recounting the history of Brolio in a post last January, followed by two further posts in February and then April, and we’re now at part four. Today we’ll continue by sharing the fascinating description of the Castle as found in texts in our private library.

Behind the Chapel, there is the ancient Castle Keep. With its crenellated towers, it offered the protection needed during extreme fighting and served as the residence to the feudal lords. The highest tower could be isolated from the other buildings by raising a drawbridge, in case a final and desperate defense of the castle were needed.

Moving alongside the group of towers, following the walkway, you arrive at the wall walkway that crowns the bastions. The powerful castle walls are immediately visible, their irregular pentagonal shape and careful construction allowed defense from the bastions of all sides against attacks. According to a study by the military historian General Raffaele Cadorna, this would be the earliest example in Italy of bastioned walls. The walls are 14 meters high on average and up to 16 on the western side, with a total circumference of about 450 meters. Under the wall walkway and in the rest of the rampart there were a number of intricate underground passageways (no longer practicable), which led to numerous arrow slits. This allowed the men to move rapidly to defend the Castle while still remaining undercover. The lower half of the walls were built as an escarpment and the upper half as perfectly perpendicular, and they were originally surrounded by moats. Eroica or L’Eroica 19 settembre, 2019

Sembra la stessa cosa, ma quel piccolo articolo – per di più apostrofato -, ha generato negli anni qualche domanda e un po’ di confusione: sì, perché quel piccolo articolo distingue L’Eroica dalle altre. Che poi sono nate dopo, sulla scia de L’Eroica, ma sempre per volontà di Giancarlo Brocci, che ben 22 anni fa decise che un territorio “scansato dall’autostrada e dalla ferrovia”, e che di questo aveva fatto la sua fortuna, poteva essere lo scenario di una corsa di biciclette a dir poco particolare. Abbiamo scritto tanto in passato su L’Eroica e gli affezionato lettori ricorderanno i racconti e le spiegazioni: ma ancora una volta siamo qui a ricordare che L’Eroica si corre la prima domenica di ottobre (dunque, il 6 ottobre) e noi non vediamo l’ora.

Quest’anno, in particolare, anche il magazine desidera ricordare Felice Gimondi, scomparso lo scorso Ferragosto, perché qui a Brolio lui veniva e correva con la sua bici, insieme alla figlia e ai loro amici e con lo spirito del grande sportivo partecipava alla cena che tutti gli anni si svolge a Gaiole il sabato sera, sotto il grande tendone, e dove le nostre bottiglie di Brolio sono sempre su tutti i tavoli in omaggio al grande progetto del Brocci e al legame che con L’Eroica si rinnova da sempre, quello da Global Sponsor. Anche L’Eroica ha voluto onorare la memoria di Felice Gimondi perché da quest’anno ci sarà un percorso in più, intitolato proprio a lui: 106 chilometri tra paesi e strade bianche, in uno scenario mai toccato in precedenza, il percorso Gimondi.

Come detto in apertura, L’Eroica è una sola ed è quella che si corre da Gaiole in Chianti attraverso strade bianche e salite indimenticabili (la più suggestiva è proprio quella del Castello di Brolio) ma Eroica – quella senza articolo -, si corre in tanti altri luoghi: oltre alle versioni toscane, citiamo Eroica Giappone, Eroica California, Eroica Sudafrica, e poi ancora la versione spagnola, quella tedesca, quella anglosassone. È proprio vero che “La Bellezza della Fatica e il gusto dell’impresa” non conosce confini geografici e limiti di traduzione.

La versione nostrana però, L’Eroica per l’appunto, ha generato un mondo di appassionati senza precedenti perché i partecipanti sono più 7 mila e con tutti gli accompagnatori succede che nei giorni precedenti la corsa, il nostro meraviglioso territorio sia letteralmente inondato di biciclette e persone dalle tenute così curate e ricercate per ricordare i tempi del ciclismo passato che lo spettacolo è diventato anche quello di ammirarli. La ricerca del particolare eroico è un’attività che occupa mesi di preparazione e anche il pacco gara è diventato un vero oggetto per collezionisti: si tratta di una scatola in latta sulla quale ogni anno è raffigurato il manifesto dell’edizione in corso e all’interno del quale ci sono tante sorprese tra cui l’immancabile bottiglia Ricasoli 1141. Ma la bottiglia Ricasoli 1141, quella di Brolio Bettino, rappresenta anche il dono che ricevono gli Eroici che pedalano per tutto il percorso lungo, quello di 209 km.

Dunque, tutto ciò premesso, quale modo migliore per aspettare L’Eroica se non trascorrere una giornata a Brolio con il programma dedicato? Perché è vero che la fatica e l’impresa sono al primo posto, ma c’è poi tutto il contorno.

Because that little article distinguishes L’Eroica from the others that were created later, in the wake of L’Eroica and through the determination of Giancarlo Brocci. He decided 22 years ago that a territory “without highways and railways” that had made its fortune exactly out of this absence, could be the setting of an extraordinary bike race.

We have had the pleasure of writing a lot in the past about L’Eroica and our faithful readers will remember the stories and descriptions. And once again we are here to remind them that L’Eroica will be held on the first Sunday of October, the 6th, and we are really looking forward to it.

As mentioned above, L’Eroica is one and only one, and it runs from Gaiole in Chianti along unpaved roads and up unforgettable hills – the most evocative of which is the climb up to Brolio Castle itself. But Eroica – without an article – is held in many other places: besides the Tuscan versions, there is Eroica Japan, Eroica California, Eroica South Africa, and then the Spanish version, the German version, the British version.

It’s indeed true that “the beauty of fatigue and the thrill of conquest” know no geographical boundaries or limits in translation.

Our home version, L’Eroica, has attracted an unprecedented number of enthusiasts.

The participants are more than seven thousand and they come with friends and family, so that in the days before the race our wonderful territory is literally flooded with bicycles and people attired carefully and accurately as vintage cyclists. It has become a show to be admired! The search for the best “heroic” details is an activity that takes months of preparation and even the race package has become a collector’s item. This tin box is decorated every year with the poster of the current race and inside there are many surprises, including the indispensable bottle of Ricasoli 1141. And the Ricasoli 1141 bottle, that of Brolio Bettino, is the gift that L’Eroica heroes who ride the entire 209 km route receive. Given all that, what better way to wait for L’Eroica than to spend a day in Brolio with a dedicated program? Because it is true that fatigue and conquest are in pole position, but the beauty around them is important, too.

This year in particular, the Magazine also wants to remember Felice Gimondi, who passed away on August 16th. He always came to Brolio and completed L’Eroica on his bike, together with his daughter and their friends. And with the spirit of a great sportsman, he attended the dinner that every year takes place in Gaiole on Saturday evening under the big tent. Our bottles of Brolio wine are always on all the tables there in homage to the great project of Brocci and to our continually renewed role as Global Sponsor of the event. L’Eroica also wishes to honor the memory of Felice Gimondi and from this year there will be an extra route, named after him: the Gimondi route will be 106 kilometers winding through towns, on unpaved roads, in a new setting.

Sembra la stessa cosa, ma quel piccolo articolo – per di più apostrofato -, ha generato negli anni qualche domanda e un po’ di confusione: sì, perché quel piccolo articolo distingue L’Eroica dalle altre. Che poi sono nate dopo, sulla scia de L’Eroica, ma sempre per volontà di Giancarlo Brocci, che ben 22 anni fa decise che un territorio “scansato dall’autostrada e dalla ferrovia”, e che di questo aveva fatto la sua fortuna, poteva essere lo scenario di una corsa di biciclette a dir poco particolare. È passato appena un mese dalla pubblicazione della seconda parte del racconto sui cru di Brolio: in quell’occasione, vi abbiamo dato qualche notizia in più, dopo aver parlato dei tre vini per la prima volta alla fine di marzo. Ma le cose belle, si sa, vanno svelate poco alla volta, così da nutrire la curiosità e scoprire passo per passo qualcosa di affascinante, interessante.

Però ora è davvero il momento di mostrarvi in che modo presentiamo queste tre magnifiche espressioni del Sangiovese di Brolio: il Colledilà, il Roncicone e il CeniPrimo. All’Enoteca e all’Osteria di Brolio hanno fatto la loro apparizione durante il mese di maggio e, contestualmente, sono stati inviati anche ad alcuni fedeli clienti Ricasoli in giro per il mondo: la collezione, in edizione limitata, trova la sua collocazione all’interno di una confezione che porta incisa la firma di Francesco Ricasoli, colui il quale, come vi abbiamo raccontato, ha pensato e voluto il progetto ultradecennale per la selezione dei Sangiovese dei diversi suoli di Brolio.

Ora possono essere ammirati – e acquistati – all’interno di una preziosa cassetta in rovere che porta un numero: ne sono state realizzate 1141 e su ogni cassetta è stato impresso il numero, in sequenza, da 1 a 1141 per ricordare l’anno in cui la famiglia Ricasoli ha fatto la sua apparizione a Brolio. All’interno dell’elegante confezione, schierati i tre cru Colledilà, Roncicone e CeniPrimo tutti Chianti Classico Gran Selezione 2015, racchiusi nelle bottiglie dalla capsula nera e riconoscibili dalle etichette studiate da Francesco Ricasoli proprio per dare continuità ai tre grandi vini. Ogni etichetta, infatti, ritrae una parte dell’albero genealogico della famiglia proprio per dare risalto, come già detto, al fatto che sono tre parti di un unico grande progetto.

Quest’ultima affermazione viene spesso ripetuta dal Barone Ricasoli e non c’è nulla di più vero, tant’è che l’azienda continua a trovare sempre nuove sfide grazie al suo forte impulso e alle sue idee.

In that segment, we provided additional information, after having written about the three wines for the first time at the end of March. We chose this leisurely pace because of course things of beauty should be unveiled a bit at a time, piquing curiosity while slowly uncovering something new and fascinating.

But now the moment has come to show you how we are presenting these three magnificent expressions of the Sangiovese at Brolio: the Colledilà, the Roncicone and the CeniPrimo. They made their first appearance at the Brolio Wine Shop and Osteria restaurant during the month of May. At the same time, they were shipped to some faithful Ricasoli clients around the world. This limited-edition collection is presented in a package engraved with the signature of Francesco Ricasoli, because he planned and sought this project – that has spanned more than a decade – of selecting Sangiovese from the various Brolio soils.

Now these Crus can be admired and purchased, packaged in a keepsake, numbered wooden box. Only 1141 were made, and each box is numbered in sequence from 1 to 1141, as a reminder of when the Ricasoli family arrived to Brolio. Inside this elegant package you’ll find the three Cru Colledilà, Roncicone and CeniPrimo, Chianti Classico Gran Selezione 2015, all packaged in bottles with black capsules and recognizable by their labels, which were planned by Francesco Ricasoli to provide continuity to these three great wines. Each label portrays a part of the genealogical tree of the Ricasoli family to show this continuity, exemplifying that they are three portions of a single, great project.

Not only the wines but also the details of the elegant packaging indicate the great research that has gone into these wines. The reason for all this attention lies in our determination to position the Chianti Classico wines as precious and unique. They are emblems of a great past (remember that the Chianti Classico was invented right here at Brolio) but also highlight how “traditions should be dynamic”. This last affirmation is often repeated by Baron Ricasoli and there is nothing truer. In fact, the company is continually finding new challenges thanks to its strong momentum and ideas.

Art of the Treasure Hunt è giunta alla sua quarta edizione: la rassegna che continua a portare opere di arte contemporanea nei luoghi più suggestivi del paesaggio vinicolo toscano, quest’anno ha scelto ancora il Castello di Brolio per l’esposizione di alcune delle suddette opere.

Da ora fino a ottobre i cortili, gli edifici storici e le cantine delle tenute selezionate per questa quarta edizione della rassegna faranno da sfondo all’esposizione di sculture e installazioni firmate da artisti di rilievo del panorama artistico contemporaneo internazionale.

Dopo la partecipazione alle tre precedenti edizioni con la Silver Stele di Heinz Mack (2016), i Fiori di Loto di Not Vital (2017), Bambini di Magdalena Abakanowicz insieme a Mushrooms di Sylvie Fluery (2018), il Castello di Brolio si conferma tra le tappe dell’originale itinerario artistico che attraversa il Chianti Classico, ospitando le opere di questi artisti: Mark Handforth nel bastione di punta, Richard Long sulla terrazza di fronte alla sala d’Arme, Yahon Chang e Zheng Zhou nella cantinaccia, Edson Chagas nella limonaia, Yan Pei-Ming nella sala d’Arme.

Le opere si trovano al Castello di Brolio: alcune di loro – quelle installate negli spazi esterni -, possono essere ammirate con il semplice ingresso acquistato alla biglietteria, l’ingresso che prevede la visita dei giardini del Castello senza prenotazione.

The Art of the Treasure Hunt has arrived for the fourth year in a row. The exhibition bringing works of contemporary art to the most picturesque corners of the Tuscan wine landscape has once again chosen Brolio Castle as the setting for some works.

From now until the end of October the courtyards, historic buildings and cellars of the estates chosen for this fourth exhibition will act as backdrops to the exposition of sculptures and installations by well-known artists from the international contemporary art scene.

After participating in the three preceding years with Heinz Mack’s Silver Stele (2016), Not Vital’s Lotus Flowers (2017), and Magdalena Abakanowicz’s Bambini together with Sylvie Fluery’s Mushrooms (2018), Brolio Castle is once again among the stops on an original artistic journey through the Chianti Classico, and will host these artists: Mark Handforth in the principal bastion, Richard Long in the terrace in front of the dining room, Yahon Chang and Zheng Zhou in the old wine cellar, Edson Chagas in the orangery, Yan Pei-Ming in the dining room.

All of these works are at Brolio Castle. Some of them – those installed outside – can be admired simply by purchasing entry to the Castle Gardens at the ticket office, for which no advance booking is necessary.

Art of the Treasure Hunt è giunta alla sua quarta edizione: la rassegna che continua a portare opere di arte contemporanea nei luoghi più suggestivi del paesaggio vinicolo toscano, quest’anno ha scelto ancora il Castello di Brolio per l’esposizione di alcune delle suddette opere.

Da ora fino a ottobre i cortili, gli edifici storici e le cantine delle tenute selezionate per questa quarta edizione della rassegna faranno da sfondo all’esposizione di sculture e installazioni firmate da artisti di rilievo del panorama artistico contemporaneo internazionale.

Dopo la partecipazione alle tre precedenti edizioni con la Silver Stele di Heinz Mack (2016), i Fiori di Loto di Not Vital (2017), Bambini di Magdalena Abakanowicz insieme a Mushrooms di Sylvie Fluery (2018), il Castello di Brolio si conferma tra le tappe dell’originale itinerario artistico che attraversa il Chianti Classico, ospitando le opere di questi artisti: Mark Handforth nel bastione di punta, Richard Long sulla terrazza di fronte alla sala d’Arme, Yahon Chang e Zheng Zhou nella cantinaccia, Edson Chagas nella limonaia, Yan Pei-Ming nella sala d’Arme.

Le opere si trovano al Castello di Brolio: alcune di loro – quelle installate negli spazi esterni -, possono essere ammirate con il semplice ingresso acquistato alla biglietteria, l’ingresso che prevede la visita dei giardini del Castello senza prenotazione.

The Art of the Treasure Hunt has arrived for the fourth year in a row. The exhibition bringing works of contemporary art to the most picturesque corners of the Tuscan wine landscape has once again chosen Brolio Castle as the setting for some works.

From now until the end of October the courtyards, historic buildings and cellars of the estates chosen for this fourth exhibition will act as backdrops to the exposition of sculptures and installations by well-known artists from the international contemporary art scene.

After participating in the three preceding years with Heinz Mack’s Silver Stele (2016), Not Vital’s Lotus Flowers (2017), and Magdalena Abakanowicz’s Bambini together with Sylvie Fluery’s Mushrooms (2018), Brolio Castle is once again among the stops on an original artistic journey through the Chianti Classico, and will host these artists: Mark Handforth in the principal bastion, Richard Long in the terrace in front of the dining room, Yahon Chang and Zheng Zhou in the old wine cellar, Edson Chagas in the orangery, Yan Pei-Ming in the dining room.

All of these works are at Brolio Castle. Some of them – those installed outside – can be admired simply by purchasing entry to the Castle Gardens at the ticket office, for which no advance booking is necessary.
