HERITAGE
A BRIEF MALDIVIAN LANGUAGE GUIDE Fishing Surrounded by abundant glittering waters, it’s probably no
surprise that fishing in the Maldives has been an integral part
of the heritage for decades. Today, what started as a popular trade in the island nation, has transformed into a recreational activity and hobby for many locals.
Maldivian fishermen will typically fish up to twice a day. For reel fishing, they depart around 10 pm and set up lights in the deep lagoon or ocean waters to attract bait. After four hours or so, there will typically be enough baitfish around to attract
larger fish. Using the net, the fishermen then catch the bait, which they put into the boat before heading out into the ocean to find larger fish.
The most popular fish to catch in the Maldives are tuna and yellow-fin tuna. Tuna is found in abundance locally and is
undoubtedly the favoured fish in the island nation. It’s used in
a plethora of dishes that range from breakfast meals to dinner recipes. It’s not uncommon for fishermen in the Maldives to catch four to five tons of tuna per day.
The majority of which is then sold to government and private fishing companies, some of which can the fish and export it
internationally. By selling the fish, the local fishermen can earn
an income and sustain their authentic and simple lifestyles, as well as help provide for their families as they can take a few fish home to enjoy with their families.
Fishing is a huge part of the lifestyle in the Maldives. It brings
joy and peace and, although it is a competitive industry in the Maldives, it centres on authenticity, passion and love.

Gorgonian fans in depths between 10m and 35m, and they are commonly found in the dive sites
around Baros. These incredible creatures feed on small benthic or planktonic crustaceans and can grow to be anything from 10 to 13cm in length.
Unlike other members of the Cirrhitidae family,
this species is incredibly distinctive, with very elongated snouts and vivid colouration that includes reddish stripes. The males of this species
are typically larger and more colourful than the
females, and they can be recognised by the black margins on their pelvic and caudal fins.

DID YOU KNOW …that if there are large schools of fish present in the water, it can take only 1 hour for fishermen to catch 3 tons of fish? … that tuna is the most common fish in the Maldives? … that some fishing boats are now even equipped with television screens and air conditioning? … that apart from the tourism industry, the second-highest income generator in the Maldives is the fishing industry?
