We are proud to partner with the Barossa Wine Auction for a third year, continuing to expand the offering of this esteemed event to international wine lovers. Since our foundation in 1988, the wines of the Barossa have captivated Langton’s customers, who nurture an enduring passion for the region’s iconic wines. Last year’s release of edition VII of the Langton’s Classification of Wine confirms the legendary mantle of the Barossa in Australian wine, with 38 wines represented.

INTRODUCTION
Tamara Grischy
Langton’s is proud to support this auction, a unique event made possible by the collaborative efforts of the Barossa Grape & Wine Association, the wineries and growers big and small, and the winemakers, male and female, of this wonderful region.
As many of you will know, Langton’s published the seventh edition of the Classification late last year. Classification I included just 34 wines. Classification VII has 136. But something that hasn’t changed in almost three decades is the dominance of Barossa.
Langton’s was with you for the 2015 and 2017 Barossa Wine Auctions, and we were here again in 2019. It’s great to see the relationship continue, strong as ever.
Barossa, including the Eden Valley, can boast up to 38 Langton’s Classified wines (depending on vintage), way ahead of Margaret River (with 14), Coonawarra (13), Clare Valley (11), Yarra Valley (9) and McLaren Vale (8).
The legendary reputation of Barossa is a product of the honesty and openness of its people, their willingness to share their stories and put their personalities on display for the rest of us who simply love to visit and take home the wines to drink and to share. With a viticultural history going back to the 1840s, Barossa’s reputation is also a product of time. Of the two most famous Australian wines one, Henschke Hill of Grace, is wholly Barossan and the other, Penfolds Grange, almost always has a Barossa component. Penfolds and Henschke became the stalwarts of the secondary market in Australian wine that was developing then and strengthened into the 1990s, with another early performer being Wolf Blass with his flagship Black Label, part-Barossa red blend. All three producers featured in the inaugural Langton’s Classification of Australian Wine, published in 1990. Langton’s was founded in Melbourne in 1988. We were Australia’s first specialist wine auctioneer.
The region regularly outperforms all other Australians in the auction market. The cellaring potential and longevity of great Barossa wines is proven and recognized throughout the world. It’s also obvious that neither Barossa wines nor Barossa winemakers are stuck in the past. Sensitivity to new generations of drinkers and a clear understanding of how to stay relevant as a region are on regular and full display. The Barossa Grounds project, focusing on identifying sub-regional expressions of Shiraz, is a great example of forward thinking in Australian wine. The Barossa Wine Auction presents opportunities to buy unique experiences and fabulous wines with outstanding provenance, coming direct from the wineries. There is great diversity, underpinned by the regional flagships Shiraz and Grenache. The catalogue includes a selection of experiential offers that are original and unique. Ladies and gentlemen, get ready to bid. TAMARA GRISCHY | Langton’s Head of Auctions BAROSSA WINE AUCTION 2019

The Barossa Wine Auction has been an integral part of the Barossa Vintage Festival since 1965. In 2015, the Barossa wine community embarked on an exciting evolution of this event, partnering with Langton’s Fine Wine Auction House. This move has expanded the Barossa offer to wine collectors the world over and created a truly hallmark wine event in the Southern Hemisphere. Held every two years in April, the auction is held both online and also as dynamic live and silent auctions. Wine collectors from around the world bid for rare and distinguished lots, positioning Barossa as Australia’s global wine region. A share of the profits support the McGrath Foundation and locally, the Barossa Vintage Festival, Barossa Enterprises and Foundation Barossa.

SUPPORT WHEN IT’S NEEDED MOST Ours is a story with simple – but well-known – beginnings. It started with Jane and Glenn McGrath’s very public experience with breast cancer, and has become one of Australia’s most recognised and respected charities, the McGrath Foundation. Some years after her initial diagnosis, Jane’s cancer returned. This time, she had a breast care nurse, who both empowered and comforted her, and the entire family. This experience set the mission for the Foundation, which has become an enduring commitment to support thousands of women and men every day, for free, no matter where they live. We raise funds to place McGrath Breast Care Nurses in communities right across Australia and seek to increase breast health understanding. Every breast cancer experience is different. That’s why the McGrath Foundation aims to make life that little bit easier for individuals and families experiencing breast cancer.

BAROSSA OLD VINE CHARTER |
Barossa is home to what is believed to be the world’s oldest, continually producing Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Mataro, Riesling and Semillon vines. The Barossa Old Vine Charter was introduced in 2009 to register vineyards by age, so that older vines could be preserved, retained and promoted. The Charter groups vineyards into four categories by age:
OLD VINE | equal or greater than 35 years of age SURVIVOR VINE | equal or greater than 70 years of age CENTENARIAN VINE | equal or greater than 100 years of age ANCESTOR VINE | equal or greater than 125 years of age Look for these categories through this catalogue.

“What makes a rare wine is its ability to tell a compelling story of its place, its climate, its soil and most of all its people... we remember that story and we tell other people.
BEN RADFORD Rockford Wines
B A sixth generation Barossa winemaker, founder Trent Burge grew up in and on Barossa soil. Riding trail bikes around the vineyards, playing local cricket and footy, he had dirt under his nails and Barossa blood in his veins. The boy has grown to craft new stories in wine. Barossa Boy is his passion project; his heart worn proudly on his sleeve. Tales of generational wisdom and legendary old vines are blended with fresh perspective and a worldly, modern palate. BAROSSA GRENACHE
Barossa is home to what is believed to be the world’s oldest continually producing Grenache vines, planted in the Vine Vale region in 1848. Once the most popular variety in Australia, changing trends away from fortifieds towards Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, saw Grenache plantings dwindle. In the late 1980s a visionary group of Barossa winemakers rescued the variety from obscurity, bringing new life to many old, dry-grown vineyards. Today we celebrate the diversity of Grenache and its place in Barossa’s history and future.

Our handmade minimal intervention wines come from individual parcels of low yielding vineyards, spread throughout the Barossa and Eden Valleys. Charles Melton Wines has produced premium Barossa red wines, always at our winery on Krondorf Road, since 1984. It was in the mid-80s that Charlie and a small band of Barossa winemakers turned their winemaking efforts to what was considered then a couple of unfashionable varieties; Shiraz and Grenache. With these varieties, Charlie built a small range of classic dry reds including a Grenache/Shiraz/Mourvèdre blend called the Nine Popes. These wines were initially styled on those from the Rhone but are now considered leading examples of the varieties in their own right. charlesmeltonwines.com.au

Born in Auckland, New Zealand, Chris had a passion for wine from a very young age, cultivating neighbour’s vines to make his first wines. After a few years working as a cellar hand locally, Chris travelled to South Australia where he studied oenology at the famed Roseworthy campus. On completion of his studies, Chris returned to New Zealand where he finished his citation on wine phenolics and protein fining agents. After periods of working in California and Europe, Chris found his way back to South Australia and in the late eighties took a position with Robert O’Callaghan at Rockford wines in Barossa. It was here Chris developed his unique style and produced his now world famous Shiraz, under his own name. (Formerly Three Rivers Shiraz.) After 15 years at Rockford, Chris travelled back to Europe and developed a number of projects with local producers in Spain. More recently, Chris has developed Nebbiolo and Carignan projects, Solitaʼ and since 2006 has developed a Northern Barossa Shiraz project with renowned Ebenezer vigneron Adrian Hoffmann chrisringland.com

Founders Keith and Alison Hentschke researched for years to find a Barossa Valley site that would produce world class, single estate wines. They discovered the property that would become Hentley Farm, with the sought-after red-brown soils and remarkable diversity of soil types, aspects and altitudes. As with many of the sites that the world’s best wines are grown on, it is a marginal site, and a unique Barossa proposition. Since 2008 winemaker, Andrew Quin has influenced the evolution of our vineyard in creating wines that highlight the complexity of the site, the natural soft elegant tannins and vibrancy of fruit. hentleyfarm.com.au

The 2008 vintage saw us embark upon our first vintage from the newly built 500 tonne winery. The privilege of operating from the purpose built winery provided us with the luxury and flexibility to pick our fruit at optimum maturity before the record long heat wave of 2008. O The Barossa is famous for many reasons, but most importantly for its food and wine culture. So when some of the local wine industry legend’s came into retirement, to maintain their interest, they formed a special group and called themselves “Barossa Crusties” They manage to get together regularly to visit a winery, get the winemakers tour, taste and then go to lunch. This is a tradition that has been going for decades. As industry leaders of the time, the groups accumulated knowledge is incredible and the one thing they still value greatly is to keep learning while maintaining their comradery and friendships with their likeminded Barossa mates over a bottle of wine and good feed.

Estimate $3,000 — $4,000
In 1973, Penfolds crafted an experimental Bin 170 sourced entirely from the nineteenthcentury Kalimna Vineyard in the Barossa Valley. 100% Shiraz, all of the grapes were picked from Block 3C – a venerated parcel that is often included in the Grange blend. In 2010, the Penfolds winemakers kept Block 3C separate, realising they had the potential to re-create a Penfolds classic.

It oozes both Barossa and Western Ridge regional hallmarks: morello cherries, dark chocolate and baking spices. Hand picked, minimal handling and a long sleep in the best French oak we can buy — a wine that will certainly live for a decade or so.

Seppeltsfield was established in the Barossa in 1851 by the visionary Seppelt family. The estate was founded on the belief in the importance of providing a whole community with work, purpose and tenure for life. Today, the fully working heritage-listed winery is undergoing a renaissance. Seppeltsfield’s innovative 1888 Gravity Cellar and surrounding winery buildings have been painstakingly restored into a modern day village. Seppeltsfield’s 1878 Centennial Cellar is the remarkable vision of Oscar Benno Pedro Seppelt, who in 1878, began the legacy of maturing single vintage Tawny for 100 years before release. As a result of this vision, the estate now boasts an unbroken linage of Tawny barrels of every vintage from 1878 to current year. seppeltsfield.com.au

St John’s Road is more than simply a name or a label; it is the collaboration of three important elements – People, Places and Time. It is the dirt the grapes are grown on, the sub-regions of the Barossa where our fruit is grown. It’s also our Barossa winemakers who are not only incredibly skilled, but who are able to work handin-glove with our growers and understand the region intimately. Our wines ultimately represent generations of knowledge, hard work and experience; principles that go into every bottle of wine that we make and every glass of St John’s Road that we share. stjohnsroad.com

Tim Smith Wines was established in 2001 with the first vintage in 2002 after a ‘light bulb moment’ while Tim was on an exchange program in the Rhone Valley. The wines are unashamedly inspired by the great wines of the Rhone Valley, but using a New World sensibility for local winemaking. We absolutely love drinking Riesling in warmer weather so we make a bit of that as well. Our wines are exuberant and floral upon release, and with careful cellaring show rounded, soulful characters. The word ‘honest’ seems to pop up in many of our long term customers tasting notes. If the wines aren’t the type of wines we’d drink at home, we simply don’t make them. Founded in 1999 by two friends with a passion for great wine, Two Hands Wines’ ambition is to showcase the diversity of Australian Shiraz. Driven by a passion for quality, Two Hands aims to highlight the nuances of fruit expression of the variety from six prized and diverse wine growing regions across South Australia and Victoria. The name Two Hands was inspired by the personal, artisanal and ‘hands-on’ approach to the craft of wine growing taken by Michael Twelftree and his team. From inception, Two Hands Wines set out to be unique and imaginative. This approach is reflected in many facets of the business, from the idiosyncratic names on the labels, to the distinctive packaging, vineyard site selection and not least, the wines themselves. The company mantra of ‘quality without compromise’ is at the core of each aspect of the business, and is a fundamental driver for all decisions made at Two Hands. twohandswines.com
