Barossa to turn it on By HON GAIL GAGO MP MINISTER FOR TOURISM SOUTH Australia’s brilliant Barossa is the place to be for fine wine, delicious food, the arts, sport and exceptional events including the Santos Tour Down Under. Indeed, the Barossa has been synonymous with the Santos Tour Down Under since this brilliant event began. As the Santos Tour Down Under has gone from strength to strength, the region has risen to the occasion. At the heart of the Barossa’s Santos Tour Down Under celebrations is the community, and the 2012 event will be no exception. From traditional Aussie barbecues, involvement in the Bupa Challenge
Tour and family activities in the town squares and village greens, there is no better way to welcome the Tour. This year’s ‘Barossa by Bike’ theme represents another excellent opportunity to showcase the best of the Barossa to an international audience. The combination of mild weather, picturesque landscape, cycling networks and plenty of places to wine and dine make the Barossa a perfect destination for cycling enthusiasts of all ages and abilities right on the doorstep of Adelaide. The 2011 Santos Tour Down Under attracted a record crowd of over 780,000 people, including many interstate and international visitors. The involvement of the new Australian Pro Cycling Team
GreenEDGE, which includes South Australians Stuart O’Grady and Jack Bobridge, and the opportunity for locals to ride the Tanunda loop of the Bupa Challenge Tour with the greatest cyclist of all time Eddy Merckx promise to be huge drawcards for the event and the sport of cycling in general. I’m certain that the many visitors expected will greatly enjoy the region’s hospitality as the community “turns it on” for the 2012 Santos Tour Down Under.

“Bikes & Bubbles - Beautiful”
We've just returned from a Barossa Bike Sunset & Sparkles tour. The weather was fantastic enabling us to sample the best the Barossa can offer while riding some really comfortable new bikes that are obviously well looked after. Thanks Karen and Louis. Your thoughtfulness and enthusiasm made for a memorable experience.
“Great place, great service... a must do”
Our party of 4 hired bikes from Karen and Louis in April and had a fantastic time riding up to Angaston from Tanunda. The scenery, the bike track and the wineries make it a top spot. The service, bikes and friendliness from Karen and Louis made it even better. Highly recommended!!
“Fabulous service with every day being different”
Just returned from 4 fabulous days cycling in the Barossa. Karen and Lewis went out of their way to be helpful. From picking us up from the airport, taking us to and from restaurants and adjusting our tour to suit our needs. Guide Ian was great and fun to be with. Every day we did a different ride and every day was different. We visited wineries, foodie places, lavender farms and more! Highly recommended.
“Awesome way to see Barossa - great service!” This was a great day in Barossa - spent the day cruising around on bikes winery to winery. The service was awesome and the bikes were brand new. I got a flat and they replaced the bike in 10 minutes!

Carnival fun in Tanunda A FAMILY fun day with a carnival atmosphere will be a drawcard when the 2012 Santos Tour Down Under rolls into town for the BUPA Stage 4 finish on Friday, 20 January. Jill Beitz, a member of the Tanunda Town Committee, said activities on Murray Street will be adapted to allow Bupa Challenge Tour riders to complete their ride under the finish arch and 'retire' to the Tanunda Oval. However, off-street activities include a family entertainment area involving clowns, face painting, bouncy castles and much more. There will be an array of food and drinks stalls as well as musical
performances and a display of heritage machinery will be a highlight. Jill said there would no shortage of entertainment between 10.30am and 3.00pm. THE Barossa region is fast gaining a reputation as one of South Australia’s most cycle-friendly regions.
development, community building, social and health benefits for the local communities.
The 7km Nuriootpa-Angaston Rail Trail, opened in November 2010, has proved a major tourism and recreation drawcard, with locals and visitors exploring the region by bike or by foot and appreciating the stunning natural environment and learning more about the region’s rich history.
The shared cycling/walking path will run along the North Para River course and the Tanunda to Gawler rail corridor, with links to the Jacob’s Creek Visitor Centre, the Novotel Barossa Valley Resort and the new Gawler East housing development.
The Trail also provides important links to other well-known attractions such as Tolley Reserve, Nuriootpa’s Linear Park, Barossa Bushgardens, Menglers Hill Sculpture Park and Barossa Farmers Market. Local residents and visitors to the Barossa and Gawler regions have recently learnt that they will soon have the joy of riding, jogging or walking between Tanunda and Gawler, and the intermediate areas of Rowland Flat, Lyndoch and Gawler East. This follows receipt of a $4.81 million Federal Government grant by The Barossa Council for the construction of a 27 kilometre-long shared cycling/walking path. The project will have sustained economic www.barossaherald.com.au
The project has cross-regional benefits from the McLaren Vale region to the Southern Flinders as the new path will link to other existing bicycle/walking paths, such as the Angaston-NuriootpaTanunda Path and the Stuart O’Grady Path, alongside the Northern Expressway, and the new electric rail service between Adelaide and Gawler. With this and other proposed and existing pathways, a major piece of economic infrastructure for South Australia will be created, namely a tourism and recreational cycling path from Willunga in the south through McLaren Vale, Adelaide, Barossa and Clare to the Southern Flinders Ranges in the north. Work on the path has commenced with a planned completion date of December 2012. 2012 Santos Tour Down Under Special - Page 11 - The Herald, Barossa Valley
