Ready for action CFS region two is the envy of the state as a purpose built incident command vehicle took to the roads last month. Funding came from CFS capital and goodwill by volunteers to have the project complete in $360,000 which is about half of the costs. It is anticipated the incident command vehicle will be put to the test during the fire season. While it is housed at Roseworthy CFS and operated by the region two operations brigade, it can be deployed anywhere across the state. CFS region two commander, Mr John Hutchins said it is the only command vehicle of its type in the state and is ready and available for rapid deployment. “It has taken two years of pushing and developing… but it was well worth the wait,” said Mr Hutchins. Mr Hutchins pays tribute to the crew who took on the project and beams with pride of what has been achieved. With access to 3G, 4G and satellite, the incident command vehicle can liaise directly with people in headquarters, while they are out at the incident. Mr Hutchins said this enables their operations to be significantly improved as technology and equipment enables the team at the incident and personnel at headquarters or local stations to communicate more effectively. “We can look at a map in the incident command vehicle and that same map can be seen at region headquarters,” said Mr Hutchins. He added a key feature is the computers from inside being able to convey out onto a screen for all to see during briefing. “There’s a lot of expertise that can be brought into play,” said Mr Hutchins. “This is the best result for firefighters and community and is a better way of managing an incident.”

Traditionally a safe Labor seat, Liberal candidate, Mr Tom Zorich came closer than expected. Mr Champion attributed the swing in part to division in the Labor leadership.

Briggs elected Mayo MP

Mr Jamie Briggs was re-elected into the seat of Mayo, with a strong win at Saturday’s election. Mr Briggs has held the traditionally safe Liberal seat since 2008, this year winning from a field of nine candidates.

He said it was a great honour to win the seat again and he was very thankful to the people of the electorate. “Obviously it’s good to win and to have the support of the people of Wakefield for a third term,” Mr Champion said.

Newly elected Liberal Member for Barker, Mr Tony Pasin from Mount Gambier, says he is humbled by Saturday’s election result in which he won more than 50 per cent of the primary vote. Mr Pasin, who has campaigned as the Liberal candidate throughout Barker for the past 18 months, says he was looking forward to getting down to business now the election was over. “It is a tremendous honour and privilege to be elected by the people of Barker. Clearly, the result locally reflected the mood for a change in government which we saw throughout the country,” Mr Pasin said. He said his priorities as a member of Mr Abbott’s government would include agriculture, small business, regional development and justice. Mr Pasin, 35, said he was grateful for the widespread support he received from throughout the electorate, both on Saturday and over the course of the campaign. “The fact that we have almost 1,000 Liberal Party members throughout Barker is perhaps my greatest asset. “Our members come from all walks of life and represent all the different communities in the electorate, from the South East, the Mallee and the Murraylands, up to the Barossa Valley and the Riverland,” Mr Pasin said. Mr Pasin was raised on his parent’s farm at Mount Gambier and retains an active interest in his family’s beef and lamb enterprise. He was exposed to the world of regional retail business from an early age, spending time in his mother’s fashion outlet in Mount Gambier. “As a child, my parents exposed me to the ‘real world’ of farming and running a retail business, instilling in me the importance of family, hard work and a robust regional economy,” Mr Pasin said.

Earthmoving services in the Barossa are decreasing, with two long-serving companies closing their doors in the past six months. EB. Marschall and Sons, Tanunda will close on Friday – just six months after Nuriootpa business, Linke Contracting shut their doors. Family members involved in the partnership are retiring and were unable to sell the working business as it has no fixed contracts. It is the end of an era for the family business, which has been operating out of Tanunda for almost 60 years. Business partner, Mr Kingsley Marschall said the decision to close had been extremely difficult, but with his brother, David’s ill health along with his own wish to retire, felt the time was right. “I am going to miss it. That said, I am proud of what we’ve done. We have built up a very successful earthmoving business that has evolved, and is absolutely debt free,” Kingsley said. “We have been thinking about it (the closure) for a while and thought maybe it is time to sit down and enjoy some of the fruits of our labour.” Kingsley said it was likely smaller businesses would step up to fill the hole left by the two earthmoving companies. “Someone is going to have to do the work, it is ongoing. Jobs like vine-ripping will always need to be done in the Barossa.”

The Barossa Old Vine Company, a label created by Langmeil Winery, Tanunda has been sold to Woolworths’ exclusive brands business, Pinnacle Liquor Group. The deal will mean the brand and remaining stock will be sold by the group, who are understood to be building their small, premium wine brands. It does not include vineyard or production facilities. Mr James Lindner, joint proprietor and sales and marketing manager of Langmeil Winery, said while it wasn’t their first intention to sell the Barossa Old Vine Company, it seemed the right time to sell the brand. “Our family, having acquired the business a few years ago, want the focus to be on Langmeil,” said James. “It was a confusing message, with Freedom Shiraz and Barossa Old Vine Company

TONY TONY ROBINSON ROBINSON Angaston Garden Club volunteers have become fed up with the constant vandalism attacks to their dedicated work in beautifying Angaston. The latest attack by vandals came on Sunday morning when they discovered their beautiful rose garden in front of Angas Recreation Park in Angaston resembled more like the result of a hurricane with orange and yellow rose petals strewn all over the nearby road. Around 150 of an approximate 250 roses, mainly of the Firestone variety, had had their b l o o m s k n o c k e d o f f, resulting in their colourful petals blowing everywhere. Some of the roses had been trampled on and one had been totally uprooted. The damage had initially been discovered around 8 a.m. by garden club volunteer, Mrs Christine Mitchell. Mr John Short, Angaston Garden Club president, said the club was struggling for volunteers as it is. “We don’t need more of this,” he remarked.

“We are lucky to have our wonderful volunteers who are driver/deliverers. Without them we could not have Meals on Wheels,” Mrs Hick said. “In saying that, we also need people on our committee to undertake various ‘vice’ roles. We are trying to attract those who are now retiring and wanting to make a personal contribution to the community, with an interest in learning new skills. We provide adequate training and computer courses if required.” Barossa Meals on Wheels has begun sharing the larger committee roles between several people to ensure volunteers are not burnt out with large workloads. The Client Service Co-ordinator is divided into three roles with one volunteer per township, and the Volunteer Co-ordinator position is also undertaken by three volunteers.

Barossa Meals on Wheels is calling for the next generation of retirees to consider a role on their committee. Branch members are trying to attract the “baby boomers” – a generation entering retirement, who may already have the technological skills required for a committee role. A restructure of the system to reduce red tape, share the workload and attract more volunteers was announced at their Annual General Meeting held at the Vine Inn, Nuriootpa last Tuesday. Ten members were elected to the committee, with Mrs Carole Hick taking up the three main roles as president, treasurer and secretary.

KELLIE McNEILL Angas Park Fruit Company will close their Angaston retail store at the end of the year, ending a 102-year association with the Barossa. The company’s lease on the property ends in about three months and general manager, Mr Peter Manning said it would not be renewed, nor the shop relocated. Five permanent employees will be made redundant and casual staff left without a job. The announcement comes just two months after the production facility closed its doors, leaving about 60 permanent employees jobless throughout the process. Retail staff had continued to promote the brand and the shop’s presence in the town following the closure of the production facility. Angaston Management Group president, Mr Steve Falland was shocked by the announcement and extended his sympathies to staff who will lose their jobs. “From the town’s perspective, it is going to leave a fair hole,” Mr Falland said. “Angas Park has been such a long standing brand and a draw card for the town. Now it will sadly be gone thanks to consolidation and globalisation.” Despite the loss, Mr Falland said he didn’t think it was a sign of a failing town or a depressed economy. “I think it is being driven by outside forces beyond what the town can change. We have a strong economy in the town; there are very few empty shops here.” Mr Falland said he would like to see a food cooperative replace Angas Park’s presence in the town.

Police are looking for more than one person who stole more than 300, two week old chicks from Nuriootpa High School on Sunday night. Gaining access to the agricultural sheds by cutting their way through a mesh fence, early indications were the theft was planned. But a pile of dead chicks were discovered by people walking near Nuriootpa’s soccer oval late on Monday afternoon and has resulted in police changing their line of inquiry. It appears 312 were stolen with 266 found dead in two separate locations near the school and 46 were still alive. Barossa Police Senior Sergeant Martin Kennedy said it now doesn’t appear to be a planned theft for monetary purposes. “We are now looking at smaller persons doing it for malicious or misguided purposes,” said Snr. Sgt. Kennedy. The school took delivery of the chicks on the last day of term with agriculture and horticulture coordinator, Mr Gerald Wright and his team taking care of them during the school holidays. Mr Wright made the discovery on Monday and is disappointed with the actions, which has resulted in close to $1,500 worth of laying chickens being stolen. “It is very annoying… extremely disappointing that they target a school in this way,” said Mr Wright.

BGWA president, Ms Linda Bowes said timing of school holidays and “Mad March” had a significant impact on this year’s Festival with visitor numbers and ticket sales on events down across the board. She added sponsorship targets were not reached and profit from the wine auction was also down on the previous event. Retiring Festival chairman, Mr Bill Biscoe said while the wine auction was well supported, it was a major concern that the finances from that didn’t reach budget.

Key stakeholders are looking at the future of the Barossa Vintage Festival after the long standing event recorded a loss of more than $56,000 this year. Barossa Grape and Wine Association (BGWA), who took over as custodians of the event in 2009, revealed the loss at their annual general meeting last month. Chief executive officer, Mr James March, said it was timely to review the objectives of the event, the governance model, funding and future vision. The 2011 Festival under the BGWA did return a profit. “It is a very competitive events market at the moment and we are suggesting it is timely to review the Festival within the context of the regional events strategy taking place,” said Mr March. “It is a hallmark event for the

The honour recognised his acts of gallantry.

Citizen of the Year Community Minister, Mrs Mary Plush was named The Barossa Council’s Citizen of the Year for her contribution to the community. while Light Regional Council awarded Joanne Dickson for her efforts in Kapunda.

EMMAEMMA MORELAND MORELAND Tanunda’s Robert O’Callaghan has been recognised for his work in the wine industry and Barossa community with a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in this year’s Australia Day honours. The honour acknowledges his support and guidance to those in the wine industry and the role he played to protect the region from residential development through the Barossa Region Resident’s Association during the 1980s. The founder of Rockford Wines said the honour is gratifying and added what makes it most special is people in the community were prepared to take the time to nominate him. “It is very gratifying that people in the community would take the trouble to do this and other people that came after the application supported it,” said Robert. “What’s ironic about this, is that when I came to the Barossa in 1970 there were two people with an Irish name. “I am not Barossa born but I love the place and it has been a wonderful experience being part of it.” Speaking with Robert on his involvement in the community and wine industry, he said what he did was “normal stuff that people do”.

This year’s 2013 vintage is predicted short and sharp while producing wines to be Barossa quality according to Baron Louisaof top who presented her vintage report duringRose Barons of Barossa Declaration of Vintage The held at Tanunda Rotunda on Sunday. In her report, Baron Louisa said this day 12 months ago, after a much more typical season 12 months later in 2012 there was typical good Barossa quality. In fact many winemakers are still talking about last year being one of the best vintages seen. This year showed early bud burst with a less than average crop. With dry and warm weather, vintage is well under way. Some years there is a struggle to find ripe grapes but that is not the case this year.

Former Faith Lutheran College student, Morgan Rigby-Meth was awarded Foundation Barossa’s Thomas Scholarship. The scholarship took Morgan one step closer to her dream of becoming a school teacher.

Arsonists who set a scarecrow alight on an Angaston property have put the Barossa Vintage Festival tradition at risk. Stockwell Road residents, Megan and Luke Samain were woken up by police and CFS, who were called to extinguish the burning scarecrow at 5 a.m. on Friday. The couple warned if their property, “Windy Hill” had lived up to its name, the damage to their 60-acre dry grass property could have been devastating. “We were just lucky it was a calm morning,” Megan said. “If it was windy like it usually is up here, the fire could have spread and it would have been a lot worse.” As it is still fire danger season, Crime Scene Investigators attended the scene and it is believed newspaper from the pair’s recycling bin was used to start the fire. After building a scarecrow two years ago, Megan and Luke were encouraged to enter an extended version of their design in this year’s competition.

James March to head BGWA The Barossa Grape and Wine Association appointed Mr James March as its new Chief Executive Officer.

A Victorian business selling Barossa Ridge Farm eggs were investigated for potentially breaching labelling laws and exploiting the Barossa brand.

ZOE HOWARD Local fire fighters risked their safety over the weekend to save the homes of residents who fled after a bushfire broke out at Cherryville. Residents, Chris and Susannah McCallum from Blockers Road, Basket Range were particularly grateful to a Barossa based composite crew, along with Mannum CFS for keeping flames away from their home. The local four-man crew – made up of members from Nuriootpa, Tanunda and Truro – spent the first half of the day in the Adelaide Hills town protecting a mature age pine plantation. The crew from the Northern Barossa Group spent nearly 20 hours protecting land and property. Crew leader, Mr Daryl Mustard from Nuriootpa CFS said the day was tough on the volunteers, with hill and hose work requiring them to run up and down steep inclines. “Despite the hard work and tasks, the crew didn’t complain,” Mr Mustard said. The crew spent the second half of the day protecting homes on Blockers Road at Basket Range. They waited for the fire and then fought it as it came closer. The crew were also putting out spot fires in the area. “It really is a credit to the crew and the work they completed,” Mr Mustard said. He said they began to gauge the size of the fire when standing on a hill and seeing the flames only a kilometre away on the next hill. “But we were busy, we didn’t have a lot of time to sit back and think about it.” He said the crew were very professional and their training helped enormously. “There’s a huge level of training in our group and a couple of guys even took on tasks they hadn’t done before.”

TRANSPORT DEBATE CONTINUES

Tributes for Barossa wine legend, Mr Peter Lehmann have been flowing since Friday, after he lost his battle with a long fought illness. Mr Lehmann, 82, of Tanunda, passed away in hospital with wife, Margaret by his side. Son, Doug worked with his father for more than 20 years and remembered him as “one in a million”. “Like everything he ever did in his life, he fought incredibly hard until the end. And always with a smile and a quip,” Doug said. “He certainly lived more than nine lives in his 82 years.” Mr Lehmann – a fifth generation of a pioneering family in the Barossa – was born in Angaston and entered the wine industry at 17. Mr Lehmann’s character was shown in 1979 when he put his business on the line to protect growers facing bankruptcy by purchasing their fruit against recommendations. The futures of more than 100 families were secured when he took a risk and started a new independent winery, Masterson Barossa Vineyards, later renamed Peter Lehmann Wines. Peter Lehmann Wines CEO, Mr Jeff Bond said “PL”, as he was known, was one of the few people who could lay claim to being a legend in their lifetime.

“Not that he ever did – or would,” Mr Bond said. “Every generation creates a few special people who have the vision, creativity and courage to make a difference. PL was one.” Barossa Grape and Wine Association CEO, Mr James March offered his condolences to the Lehmann family. “His influence is immeasurable; so many stories tonight will be shared in his honour,” Mr March said. “PL’s lasting legacy will be the inspired belief that the Barossa is something special. “It’s an inheritance that resonates across the entire community.” Before taking on the world of wine, Mr Lehmann was a talented football player, lining up for the Angaston Football Club and winning the premiership in 1955. The club wore black armbands on Saturday in memory of Mr Lehmann, who played Colts in 1946 and progressed to A-grade in 1947 at the age of 16. Mr Lehmann is survived by wife, Margaret and children, Doug, David, Phillip and Libby. Although Mr Lehmann officially retired in 2002, he was a contributor to the business to the end.

Wine laws scrapped

Natural gas will come to Tanunda after it was announced more than $9m will be invested in the town’s project over the next four years.

EMMA EMMA MORELANDMORELAND Extensive feedback and consultation has resulted in the State Government’s decision to not proceed with laws to allow the sale of wine in the state’s supermarkets. Deputy premier, Mr John Rau said the intentions of the original proposal, with which he continues to agree, were not able to be delivered. “When this proposal was first raised with me by independent grocers, it seemed to me that it could benefit both the independent grocers and smaller South Australian wineries,” he said. “After considering all submissions and seeking legal advice, I am now of the view that we can not achieve the desired outcome without hurting independent bottle-shops, our local wine industry and helping Coles and Woolworths.” Welcoming the news is Barossa Weintal venue manager, Mr John Cowled. “It’s good to see the government recognising the financial damage that could be done, both financially to small and family owned businesses and also, of the potential ease of access to minors had supermarkets been granted to sell the wine,” said Mr Cowled. “Jobs will be preserved, small wineries will still have a market and families can rest more easily knowing that their retirement and investment monies are preserved. “Well done to the AHA and to the independent owners for mounting such a strong awareness campaign.” Kapunda hotelier, Mr Peter Janson expressed his fear in the proposal, citing it would put more pressure on country hotels and bottle shops.

Angaston Garden Club volunteers have become fed up with the constant vandalism attacks to their dedicated work in beautifying Angaston.
