STUNNING SHOW: Neville and Elizabeth Jaeschke have a stunning array of Dahlias growing at their Tanunda home.

Neville and Elizabeth Jaeschke have approximately 450 Dahlia plants, representing all 17 types, growing in their Tanunda backyard. So it’s safe to say they know more about these beautiful blooms, flowering from late January to the beginning of May, than the average gardener. Neville is the Vice President of the Dahlia Society of SA and Elizabeth is the

Vice President of the Barossa Valley Floral Design Club and they have been growing Dahlias ‘seriously’ for more than 30 years. The couple are now recognised as “A Grade Exhibitors” and hope to one day win the fiercely contested Dahlia Society Grand Champion. Keen for others to discover the joy in growing Dahlias, Neville and Elizabeth encouraged people to enter their blooms

into the Tanunda Show. “The Dahlia sections are among the cut flowers for the first time this year,” said Neville who said they have returned to how it was prior to the 1950s. The Jaeschkes grow their Dahlias under 50% white shade cloth, they keep the soil damp and covered in mulch. They also disbud to improve the size and quality of flowers.

Autumn Home Ideas 2013 LEFT: Ron Herrmann, of Tanunda invites classes from Tanunda Lutheran School’s Early Learning Centre to see how vegetables are grown in his productive garden. Students, including Thomas Cummins and Summer Owen, are always amazed to see the huge variety of crops growing, including sweet corn, capsicum, carrots and kohlrabi in around two dozen garden beds. Isa hens are used for pest control and fertilizer in accordance with permaculture principles and brightly coloured marigolds surround the beds to deter nematodes.

vegies, you’re eating them.” He swaps the vegetables he grows in excess with friends, who then supply him with food he doesn’t grow himself. One year he grew 27 different varieties of tomato, with at least 250 tomato plants, and had plenty to give away. While Mr Herrmann’s garden is well established, he said it is simple for those looking to start their own. “Younger people are so keen and there are lots of things they can do. For example radishes will come up within a few days; you see instant results.” He said while everything grows well in the Barossa if you take care of it, the best time to begin a vegetable garden is spring. The most important thing, according to Mr Herrmann, is to find a good weed control and to not rush the construction of the garden. “Don’t be in a big hurry if you’re growing a garden, dig it over, keep it damp, let all the weeds come up, dig it over, let the next lot of weeds come up and the third time around, then you can start planting,” he said.

Tanunda gardener, Mr Ron Herrmann is teaching future generations how to be selfsufficient. Mr Herrmann’s extensive vegetable garden ensures he has fresh food throughout the year and he is teaching school students how to do the same. The former school teacher established his garden more than 30 years ago and has maintained it with the help of his garden clean-up crew. Using a moveable chicken shed, Mr Herrmann allows six hens to roam the garden, mulching the soil and acting as natural pest control. “Chooks are just the best scavengers, you can’t beat them,” Mr Herrmann said. “They will pick out any little insects or earwigs and I restrict their area so they will clean up where I want them to.” Mr Herrmann sustains his household with fresh corn for four months of the year, many different types of fruit and staple ingredients. “I grew up eating fresh and it means w i t h i n f i v e m i n u t e s o f p i ck i n g t h e

Autumn Home Ideas 2013

Making the most of limited space When Tanunda couple, John and Lois Miegel built their fifth and final house, it was half the size of their previous home. The small home, situated between two two-storey houses, had to be built ingeniously to make the most of the limited space. The pair eliminated a dining room by combining it with their living area and built a 25,000 litre water tank underneath the floor in their shed to conserve space. “We are making the most of the area we have,” John said. “ We h a v e l o v e l y r a i n w a t e r through the house and no one would

know the tank is there.” Looking to downsize, John and Lois purchased the block seven years ago for convenience and ease of maintenance. They built the home with a main bedroom and ensuite, two spare bedrooms, a bathroom, laundry, lounge room, and a combined kitchen, dining and living space. John and Lois drew inspiration for the house design while visiting their family in Queensland and altered it to suit their needs. The traditional old-style home is adorned with cream walls and complemented by light green tropical

curtains to create the illusion of extra space. “I like things that are light and bright; it’s nice in summer and even in winter it looks warm,” Lois said. “It’s nice to have a touch of Queensland here too, we built the house wanting to make it into a very warm home for our family.” Located in a flood-prone area, the home was built several metres above ground level, with large floor to ceiling windows, which provide a view of the street. The combined kitchen, dining and living space is located at the front of the home, and lush green lawn can

be seen from both the front and back windows. The pair decided to adapt the tropical theme to their outside living area, and have decorated with palms, fruit trees and a bunch of colourful flowers and plants. Like most things in their house, the garden is also practical, with Jo h n r e c e n t l y h a r v e s t i n g f i v e cases of nectarines from their trees. In typical Australian style, a verandah also wraps around all edges of the home. “It fits in with Tanunda, which is an older town,” Lois said. “It’s small and simple, but it’s home.”

David creates his own putt putt course it was a couple of weeks to create,” said David. And with some finishing touches still to come, the putt putt course is already a hit. “Regardless of whether you play golf or not, people will play putt putt and the children, the grandchildren… everyone has a go,” said David. “It is a bit of fun and it’s easier to manage. We didn’t want it perfectly flat and have a few humps and have thought of putting obstacles in it down the track.”

David Wall, of Nuriootpa has found a clever way to utilize space in his backyard where it was difficult to grow lawn - he installed a three hole putt putt course using artificial turf.

A backyard lawn that wouldn’t grow and a water bill that increased, prompted N u r i o o t p a ’s D av i d Wa l l t o set up his own putt putt golf course. It was a segment he caught by chance on television programme, Better Homes and Gardens that gave David the inspiration to tackle the job himself. A few weekends of hard labour and a small investment and David and his family now have a three hole putt putt course. “I was trying to grow a lawn and tried for a few years,” said David. “I’d have to mow it and water and it would never cover properly… it was ridiculous.” Artificial turf was laid which was followed by stones and paving – all of which require no maintenance. Together with wife, Leanne they have personalised their course with solar lights and a water feature. “Once I decided to get going,

Capture your own water Although the region has experienced very little rain recently, more property owners are turning to the installation of rainwater tanks for household consumption and garden use. One of the main factors for people to install rainwater tanks, in many cases more than one on the property, is because of an increase in water prices. Nuriootpa’s Ms Sandy French got rid of her rusted out galvanised iron rainwater tank for a new Maxiplas tank. “It is a bit bigger than what I had before,” said Sandy. “This is a 2,500 litres and it lasts me for 12 months. It also helps with the water bill… it is not as high because I am using my own water.” Sandy uses the rainwater for watering

her pot plants and garden in addition to inside use. “I am a pensioner and from the old school,” she said. “I look at ways and means on how I can economise and save money.” S a n d y p u r ch a s e d h e r tank through Barossa Mitre 10 Trade and was fortunate to be assisted with a government grant through the rainwater tank installation scheme. She said being in a unit, the size of the tank was something she seriously had to consider. According to Mr Graeme Schmidke at Barossa Mitre 10 Trade, rainwater tanks come in

all sizes to suit all needs. He said the government rebate of $200 for stand alone tanks still applies and encouraged people to think about purchasing a tank before the autumn rain sets in.

Repair

He has seen people increasing the number of tanks on their properties to take advantage of the rain when it comes and use the water in their gardens.

Autumn Home Ideas 2013 Making the most of a small room Mrs Colleen Cailes from Nuriootpa has made the most of her small bathroom and now describes it as beautiful and open. The room used to have small, blue tiles on the walls, but they are now sparkling white, with the help of Mark Linke from Barossa Building and Tile Supplies. Colleen had the 4x2 metre room renovated over Christmas and its appearance is now transformed. She said a mix of many things made the room look small, including a wall diving the shower and hand basin. The whole room is white, leaving Colleen to decorate with any colour she chooses. “I always wanted a white bathroom because it’s timeless,” Colleen said. She is no longer trying to fit all of the towels on the rack because she opted for a large towel rack with several tiers. Colleen’s bathroom now features a threecorner bath and roomy shower, with attached and handheld showerheads. The best part for Colleen is the ease in cleaning her new bathroom.

Tips for your bathroom The usual problems with aging bathrooms are wall dampness from the shower cubical. A Tell-tale sign is salt damp look-a-like on the opposite side of shower cubical wall. Bathrooms pre 1968 would have galvanized underfloor plumbing which may connect into earthenware pipes. Galvanised underfloor pipes have problems corroding and leaking under bathroom floors, also the corrosion inside the pipes would restrict the waste water flow to less than half. Earthenware pipes have problems with root bound from plants which cause blockages. Also wall wetting from a shower cubicle is caused by water getting through grout joints, wall/floor junction strip and sometimes a leaking pipe or breaching piece. In situations like this it is best for the bathroom to be stripped out completely including the floor. When the floor is stripped out the underfloor plumbing is renewed, ensuring leakage problems will be fixed for future years and also gives the freedom to re-design your bathroom layout as well.

TIMBER AND CARPET SALE!

All shower cubicles by law must be waterproofed before tiling to prevent wall wetting. All floor and walls to shower must have water proof tanking with puddle flange to floor grate. It is a wise move after the underfloor plumbing to place white ant barrier under new floor. It is law to electrical earth the concrete reinforcement so as to avoid any electrical shocks or more. The new concrete floor must have the correct falls into the floor grates as there are Australian standards for this. A tip to help prevent condensation in the bathroom is to install a good quality exhaust fan system or a 4 in 1 heat light and fan system. Another good idea is to install an underfloor heating system which is not expensive these days and the running cost is very minimal. Also ensure the tapware complies with water efficiency labelling Scheme. Cabinetry also needs to be manufactured and sealed for moisture resistance.

Transforming the Nicolai family homestead was a big task for Geoff and Sue Nicolai but after four years of planning, they now have new areas to enjoy. The cottage located on Nicolai Road, Bethany was built by Geoff ’s grandfather more than 100 years ago. When Geoff and Sue moved into the premises more than five years ago, a new laundry, bathroom and kitchen were needed – putting all the amenities under one roof. They purchased a kit home, which was positioned alongside the cottage and created nearly double the size. “We went through 30 designs to get this one,” said Geoff. “This is a bit bigger than what we were expecting,” added Sue. The property is situated on 80 acres and with the new additions, which includes a bedroom with ensuite and

living area, it is a bigger home for Geoff and Sue and their children, Megan, Tiffany and Brendyn. For Sue, having a kitchen double what she is used to is a dream come true. Having only just finished work on the new addition last month, she is looking forward to using new appliances, taking advantage of an area specifically for storage. “There’s room to move and I can use all the new stuff,” she said. “There’s a storage area… somewhere to store food which I didn’t have the space for in the old kitchen.” While Geoff and Sue had their plans in place, there were some unexpected additions along the way including solar hot water panels, four large rainwater tanks and ducted air-conditioning. They both agree they would only do a project like they have just completed, once and encouraged people to do their research and know the processes.

Autumn Home Ideas 2013 Story continued from previous page... But they can see the advantages of undertaking the project. “One of the pluses of building on, part of the original house was deteriorating and we had rainwater tanks too close to the house which pushed the foundation and made a wall come out so by putting the addition on, we have strengthened it,” said Geoff. “The skylights are absolutely brilliant… it was so dark,” added Sue. The family has also worked on recognising the era of the cottage, using the original door from the bathroom in the new living area and having a windowsill of red gum sourced from an old horse stable.

There are many benefits in trees After a long, very hot summer, and with the price of electricity soaring, consider planting trees in your garden. Trees create shade and cooling, deciduous trees protect you from the sun and heat in summer, and allow the sun and warmth in, in Winter. On a 40°C+ day, you can have a picnic under the canopy of a large tree, the leaves air-conditioning the temperature down to 25°C. Trees provide structure, height and beauty, as well as year round interest with foliage, autumn colours, flowers, fruit and attractive bark.

Trees provide habitat for birds and other wildlife, and shelter from wind and noise, but most importantly, trees counteract climate change. Trees, in simple terms, take up carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, store the carbon in the central bulk of the tree and release oxygen. With weather patterns appearing to be more extreme, it is our responsibility to future generations to plant as many trees as we can on our properties and in our gardens. Trees create rain, clouds always collect above a forest. Trees add value to your property. Real estate values are always higher in suburbs where there are lots of trees. If choosing a large tree for your garden, consider a Golden Elm, a Chinese Elm, Claret Ash, Plane Tree or a Powton. Three wonderful large eucalypt species include the lemon scented gum, Eucalypt Citriodora, the spotted gum, Eucalypt Maculata or the Ironbark Eucalypt Siderloxylon Rosea. Good medium trees for your garden include the ornametal pears, Manchurian Pear and Pyrus Chanticleer, Canadian Maples, Native Frangipani, Hymenosporum, Jacarandah, Robinia and Gleditzea. Lovely medium sized eucalypts are Eucalypt Ficifolia, Eucalypt Caesia and Eucalypt Torquata. There is a big range of gorgeous small trees. Crepe Myrtles are some of the lovliest trees in the world, with four seasons of interest. In Spring they produce their lush green pinnate leaves. They flower all summer in colours of white, pink, cerise and lavender. In Autumn their foliage goes gold, orange and red and in Winter the trunk exfoliates with beautiful multi-shaded bark revealed. Crabapples and Prunus produce beautiful blossom. Chinese Pistacia has brilliant red beautiful blossom. Chinese Pistacio has brilliant red autumn foliage and the English Hawthorn produces tiny pink or scarlet roselike flowers. Lovely little eucalypts include the fuschia gum, Eucalypt Forrestianna, Eucalypt latens ‘Moon Lagoon’ with tiny blue foliage and Eucalypt Pyriformis with large red or yellow flowers. The staff at Barossa Nursery are happy to help you with the right tree selection and freely give you the Flemings Top Ten Tree Book, which also helps you make the right choice. Bulbs are in at Barossa Nursery. Come and check out the huge range of daffodils, tulips, freesias, ranunculus, soldier boys, hyacinths, anemones and more. Bulbs look great, planted in a circle under the dripline of a tree! The team look forward to your visit to the beautiful award winning Barossa Nursery.

WE SPECIALISE IN ALL QUALITY HOME IMPROVEMENTS

Let’s ask Erica Have your gardening questions answered by Barossa Nursery, Barossa Valley Way, Nuriootpa. Dear Erica, We planted two bare toot Maroo grapevines six months ago. They both shot out green leaves but one has gone backwards and only has a few leaves left. They have been treated exactly the same. I water them every day with the hose. Was one vine faulty and should I replace it? Robin P. Answer: The Barossa Valley is arguably the best place on the planet for grapevines and hence are regarded as tough plants. Because both vines shot out would suggest the vines were healthy. I think the problem would be the way you water. If you water with the hose you probably are delivering only five litres of water approximately. If you used the watering can, you would be applying nine litres. If you used two three hour drippers per vine, you would be applying 24 litres of water, probably equivalent to having the hose trickling quite slowly all night. Shallow watering as you are, creates shallow roots, which become hot and damaged in summer and unable to take up moisture at the same rate as the leaves are transpriing water, and hence the plant struggles and drops leaves. I recommend you try and save the vine, by applying Seasol fortnightly, mulch with peastraw and set up drippers or have the hose dripping very slowly all night a couple of times a week, while the weather is hot. Just because you have treated both vines supposedly the same, the second vine would probably be just above the critical threshhold of minimum watering, so treat that vine also with Seasol and heavy soaking. Erica.

Bringing an outdoor space to life Rob and Jenny K ernick from Nuriootpa enjoy spending their time outside and have created a comfortable area to suit their needs. Their eye-catching outdoor area, built by Rob, has an impressive kitchen area and mobile table. The couple use the area at breakfast time and friends love dining outside when they visit. “We like to have the children over and eat out here while the grandchildren are playing on the lawn,” Rob remarked. Rob said it was great to have the area right next to the back door so he can keep an eye on the food from inside – it also encourages him to keep the area clean and tidy. He said creating the area took a lot of hard work but it made dining outdoors easier with a functional kitchen, including a camp oven. Je n n y s a i d h e r h u s b a n d i s always thinking of new things to create, and he wants to do it all himself. The next step in their outdoor area is to put in café curtains and blinds to keep the sun and wind out. Not only do the Kernicks have a main outdoor area, they also have a kitchen in the shed, where Rob makes pickles, sauce and chutney. Even though the weather may be getting colder, the Kernichs said their area was still great to cook and dine in because it’s all under cover.

Jenny and Rob Kernick enjoy spending time dining in their outdoor area, which Rob built himself.
