Autumn Home Ideas
Make your home high tech
In this Autumn issue of Home Ideas
Modern homes are going high tech as new wireless technology becomes increasingly popular in households. Craig Johnson, owner of CSJ Electrical, has been in business for seven years. He has witnessed the wireless boom and a new wave of technological advancements entering the market place. Home automation is becoming the new “must have” for home owners who are looking for an extra touch of technology. “It’s basically where you can automate your lighting, irrigation, blinds, power points...” he said. “You can operate it all through your iPad or iPhone and with the touchscreen.” The technology allows home owners to turn on air-conditioning remotely or programme specific times so you can have your house at the perfect temperature when you return home from work. There are many benefits of home automation and Craig says not only does it offer convenience and control from where ever you are, it adds value and can also save energy. By programming blinds to close automatically when you leave in the morning, it doesn’t matter if you forget. The heat of the day will be kept out and air conditioning costs reduced. “You can set your blinds to go up and down whenever y o u w a n t ,” explained Craig. For those w h o l i ke to go on holidays,
Welcome to the 2015 Autumn edition of Home Ideas. In this season’s lift-out we speak to a local “sparky” to see how the latest technology is enhancing modern houses. Member for Schubert, Mr Stephan Knoll invites us into his family home. Continuing with the high tech theme, Anthony Mickan from Betta Home Living shares his top five “gotta-get” items. Erica Bartsch answers your gardening questions and reveals what’s happening at Barossa Nursery. The duo from Barossa Renovations share what they are seeing in kitchen and bathroom fashions and the Meznar family share their story.

home automation offers peace of mind when it comes to security and looking after a well-loved garden. Irrigation systems can be programmed to turn on at regular intervals and lights can be set to go on and of at different times, making potential burglars think there’s someone at home. “You can programme lights to come on at certain times of the day. You can have your lounge room light come on at 8 p.m. at night and switch off a couple hours later for example,” said Craig. Gone are the days of energy burning halogen down lights and Craig said the introduction of LED lighting is one of the biggest changes he has seen during his 13 years working as an electrician. “The running cost is about a fifth of a halogen lamp, plus there is no maintenance to them - they should last 10 years.” To add a further high tech vibe to your home, install some sensor lights. Not only are they perfect for the forgetful householder, they can further reduce your energy bill. “Sensor lights only come on when there is motion detected,” said Craig. “You can put them anywhere. We’ve been putting motion detectors instead of switches in toilets. They only turn on when you are in the room so you can’t leave the light on and the exhaust fan will run for only a short amount of time. “You can put them at the front door for when people come into the house or use them for security. By installing sensors outside, the lights come on if there are people walking around at night.” There is no excuse for a boring looking light switch either. With so many different styles to choose from, you can easily match your kitchen splash backs or tiles or complement an older style home with a range of heritage style options. “ There are all new colours, ranges and different options to suit your house style,” said Craig.
Autumn Home Ideas
Classic, stylish and a touch political It was love at first sight for Amy. “As soon as I saw this house, I knew there was going to be work involved in fixing it up to how we would like it. But I just had a feeling when we met the family that were selling it, that it was supposed to be our family home next,” Amy said. Stephan was perhaps a little more
practical in his approach. “It was a very sturdy, solid structure. We could see very minimal salt damp, floor boards underneath had a lot of potential..... It’s double brick and it’s a very well structured home,” he explained. There is, however, a special connection to Stephan’s family as their new residence was built
by A.C. Schulz who started Schulz Butchers in Angaston in 1939 - the very business the Knoll family purchased as part of Barossa Fine Foods in 2002.

Autumn Home Ideas
A place to call home Continued on page 4
Two generations of Schulz’s lived in the house before it was rented to a local policeman. It was later sold to Don and Helen Campbell in the eighties. “Their family put the house up for sale. Their hope was that they could sell it to a family that would look after it and do it up and that’s what has happened,” said Stephan. Amy and Stephan enlisted the help of Caroline Wodson from Barossa Renovations as they embarked on the project which took four months. “We have completely new bathrooms and a new kitchen. The entire house was painted and we sanded and stained all of the floorboards and did all the electrical,” he listed. “We’ve kept the original doors, all the original skirtings, the original fireplaces and didn’t just white-wash the lot.” It’s Amy’s sense of style that has lifted this family home and brought it into a new generation without losing its character. “I had a theme in mind. I’m very into that simple and homely feel and it was really important to me to keep the feel and history of the house...I was really specific about being very sympathetic to the era of the home but modernising it to reflect today’s lifestyle,” said Amy. “I think Caroline helped me create what I wanted to achieve out of the renovation and to create our family home. “I had a lot of ideas and she helped me basically bring that to life in terms of helping me through the whole process of picking fixtures and fittings, tiles, colours...” The result is a classic simple look with a family friendly feel - something Amy had pictured in her mind from the beginning. She admits that her favourite room in the house is her Sturt Street Kitchen. “I always wanted a big, open style kitchen and I wanted to keep the classic,
beautiful woodwork in the corner. “It’s just lovely to be in there and to look onto the garden outside and watch Ruby playing while I cook in the kitchen. I love cooking...for years to come it will be a place for everyone.” Stephan struggled in nominating which room he liked best. “That’s a tough one. I don’t know that I have a favourite room but I like the floors. The natural variation of the timber was phenomenal...It almost looks like a piece of art. “And my black sink. It’s two deep bowls and I’m a rinser, I’m also a splasher...A good deep bowl means I don’t spill as much water everywhere and the second sink you can use as a proper rinsing station,” explained Stephan. Amy laughs as she interrupts, “That’s what he says to people who come here.... look at my floors and look at my sink!” Stephan was quick to reveal the next project on his renovating agenda. “My cave! Outside there is a double garage where they stored the fire wood. I need to concrete it up and turn it into an above ground cellar. “It’s really thick brick but I can triple insulate the roof and the door.... I’ve got wine in my brother’s cellar, Ruby’s room... it’s hidden throughout the house - I need a cellar and somewhere I can disappear to when my three brothers come around.” He said the cellar is the only room Amy will have no artistic control over. “She’s made plenty of suggestions though...” he said cheekily. The family see themselves living at their new address for years to come and are proud to call Angaston home. “We’ve lived all over the place and Amy and I have pretty strong ideas of what we wanted in the house. This ticks all the boxes,” Stephan said. “The idea is very much that we’re done with moving.”
Black and white is a theme that is seen throughout the home with the on-trend chevron pattern in the master bedroom.
Original dome ceiling detail.
The original fireplace is a focal point of the living room where family pet, Molly finds her own special chair.
Ruby, aged 2 loves the colourful fabric tent which takes pride of place in her bedroom.

Improve your health A fresh new look is easy to achieve and wellbeing with a sit-stand desk solution! Monique Goodman and Caroline Wodson from Barossa Renovations love adding bling with tiles and encourage people to add a touch of their own personality to home renovations.
Home renovators are spoiled for choice when it comes to kitchens and bathrooms - the key selling points in any home. With more than 15 years’ experience in the building and renovation industry, Caroline Wodson and Monique Goodman, from Barossa Renovations in Tanunda try to keep on top of the latest styles and products available. “There’s almost too much choice nowadays and it confuses a lot of people,” said Caroline. They are strong advocates for Australian made “because we want our kids to have jobs in the future” and they encourage people to spend more on quality fittings for reliability. Cheap alternatives will only cause problems in the long term and it is better to cut costs in other areas. For those looking to update their bathrooms, Caroline says trends may change, but ultimately you still need to love what you’ve done in five years’ time. She said Barossans are becoming a “bit more adventurous” and Caroline loves that. “They are steering away from the plain white vanity and going into textured and coloured cabinets,” said Caroline. “Mosaics are still in which horrifies most of the older people who are ripping them out!” she laughs. “Big format tiles with channel grates and real cleanline looks are in at the moment. Industrial looks are huge.” The main objective for Caroline and Monique is to make sure the renovation suits the style of the house. “It’s about being respectful to the home. With a nice old heritage home, sometimes a modern bathroom is just way too stark,” said Caroline. Kitchen renovations are the same and Monique said people can choose from an endless array of BEFORE
styles and products to ensure they get the right look to complement their home. “It’s laminates, it’s tiles, glass splash backs, stone tops, timber doors, painted doors - it all depends on the individual taste and budget,” said Monique. “Drawers are the big thing and pull out pantries so you can see everything inside. People like to have built in rubbish bins too.” Handles can change the look of a kitchen entirely and a clean, uncluttered look can be achieved with the latest push catches. The traditional central kitchen table of yesteryear has been replaced with stylish and functional island benches that add value to the home. “Kitchens are the most important room in the house. It’s where the family congregate,” Monique explained. “You can still go to a nice two pack kitchen in an old home but you might have a shaker style look with modern finishes and textures and still be respectful to the older style of the house. “We always encourage people to have what they really want,” said Monique. “Get creative with the splash back, that’s where you can add colour and personality. You can have a neutral kitchen with a “way out” splash back if you like and it’s not an overly expensive exercise to change in the future,” she said. Listening to people is what the Barossa Renovations team do best. “Everybody has different tastes - we think it’s great,” said Caroline. “It’s an exciting industry to be in. People are really happy to do their home renovations because the transformation is just wonderful - going from old tired to new and fresh. They love it.”

Autumn Home Ideas Spring flowering bulbs available now! March is bulb month and there are so many wonderful exciting bulbs, to beautify your garden. You should purchase your tulip and hyacinth bulbs in March, as they require six weeks and two weeks respectively in the crisper, before planting out. Daffodils are the most popular bulb, and they really herald Spring. Their cheerful yellow flowers dispel the ‘greyness’ of winter. They come with single or double flowers and exotic forms and colours of white, orange or pink. Jonquils are early smaller flowering daffodil types. Easy and rewarding to grow, they should be lifted every third year to refresh. Crocus come up very quickly in colours of white, yellow and purple. Anemones are pretty cottage plants in colours of white, pink, red, white and blue. Dutch Iris are mainly a gorgeous blue, but are available of white, yellow and purple. Freesias are another extremely popular bulb and are ideal for mass planting and all are beautifully scented. Grandma’s Freesia is creamy white and the most fragrant of all. They come in single and double, in colours of white, yellow, pink, orange and purple. They are also good in pots. Hyacinths have cones made up of starry waxy florets with a strong lovely perfume. They come in colours of white, pastel pink, blue and burgundy.

They prefer morning sun then shade, or dappled light conditions. Ideal as a lovely boarder or as a pot plant. They look great in an old terracotta pot. Grape hyacinth or muscari are smaller plants, great under trees, where they naturlize, forming a stunning blue carpet. They are also available in white. Ramunculus are a gorgeous flat rose-like flower coming in a range of colours from white, yellow, orange, pink, red and black. They thrive in full sun, flower over an extended period in Spring and add great colour to your garden. Bluebells or Scilla are a mass of flowering bells on a stalk, in colours of white, pink or blue. They are great for massing under a deciduous tree. Tulips are an all time favourite bulb with magnificent cup shaped flowers in colours of white, pink, red, yellow, orange and black. There are feather varieties and parrot varieties (wild, fancy gorgeous tulips.) Keep the bulbs in the crisper for six weeks before planting. Tulips prefer dappled light and can grow in pots. They make a fantastic cut flower, as do most bulbs. There are other fabulous bulbs including Fritillaria, Lxia, Ornithogalum, Snowflakes, Spiraxis and more. Come and check out the fabulous range at Barossa Nursery. Also come into the nursery for all your Autumn garden requirements. The team look forward to seeing you!

Solar + Storage + Monitoring. ZEN’s smart technology grows with you.

Well, the soil and topsoil have been delivered and compacted, footings will go in soon and the walls should go up at Barossa Nursery in March. A number of customers are asking what the new building will be like – it will be a large rectangular concrete building, over a 1,000 square metres, housing indoor plants, giftware, dry goods – fertilisers, irrigation gear, seeds, potting soil, pruning gear, garden tools and outdoor furniture. Yes Barossa Nursery are planning to keep the ambience, with great indoor plant and giftware displays. Meanwhile, while using their shed as the garden shop, they have had many compliments how good the displays look in the shed and one rep even said the shed looks a lot better than a lot of retail nurseries in Adelaide. The garden nursery has not changed, it is still full of wonderful, happy healthy plants, as before. You are welcome to check it out!

Have your gardening questions answered by Barossa Nursery, Barossa Valley Way, Nuriootpa.
AUTUMN LIVING
Dear Erica, The red Delicious Apple tree has lots of indentations on the surface of the apples. The apples are otherwise fine and edible, showing no bruising or anything. What is causing this? Lena P. Answer: There is an apple dimpling bug which, in ideal climate conditions occurs, but fairly rarely. It is a pale green bug about two mm long and sucks sap from flowers and young fruit. The fruit stops growing where sucked, but the undamaged areas continue to grow, producing the characteristic dimpling. The apple is fine under the skin. The Granny Smith and Delicious varieties are the most susceptible to dimpling, but it can occur on any apple variety. Look for these small green insects from the time the buds open and spray with Mavrik, when bees are not present. Erica. Dear Erica, I bought a Fuchsia in November and potted it into a lined hanging basket, under my veranda and it gets very early morning sun. It was growing, flowering and thriving but after the hot February, it is still alive, but there are a lot of fallen leaves and dead sticks. What can I do? Jayne E. Answer: It possibly the plant dried out or got too hot in February. Fuchsias are temperature plants, liking 5°C to 35°C. On hot 40°C days put the hanging basket on the ground, where it is cooler. Coconut hair liners dry out quite quickly so water more frequently. Barossa Nursery always recommend their Terracotta and Tub mix for thirsty plants like Fuchsias and Hydrangeas, because it contains water crystals (for extra water retention) and a soil wetter (so that the soil ‘wets’ more easily). If ever you see a plant ‘collapse’ from lack of water quickly drunk it in a bucket of water for half an hour. At this point of damage, cut back any dead ‘sticks’, trim back the plant to where leaves remain, fertilize weekly with Seasol 2-3 times, and when new growth appears you can apply a slow release ‘Ferticote’ or Thrive or Powerfeed. Erica.

Built on the belief that true, local craftsmanship will remain highly valued, family owned and operated Meznar Furniture, Gawler continues to flourish after 30 years in business. Founded in Gawler by Peter and Carolyn Meznar in 1984, the local manufacturing and retail chain produces handcrafted, sustainable solid timber furniture that can be customised. Each piece of Meznar Furniture oozes quality. The company sources the best locally available materials to create furniture with integrity and soul. Keeping all manufacturing in house enables the company to work end to end, buying rough-sawn, sustainable timbers to create quality furniture pieces in their purpose-built Gawler workshop. Each piece is constructed using traditional techniques made from solid timbers, no MDF! From the dovetail drawers to the trenched carcass shelves, the construction of every piece is always about quality, care and craftsmanship. Meznar Furniture is now branding each piece with the family name. “We all take pride in our homes,” Carolyn says. “They are a reflection of who we are and our beliefs. With the widom we have gained from many years of experience and the handcrafted nature of the furniture we create, we can help transform a room into something unique and really special! Meznar pieces are a real statement.” The knowledgeable staff can assist with design, advise on spatial aspects, help with timber and finish selection, to suit your existing décor and lifestyle.
Meznar Furniture use beautiful quality fabrics and natural leathers in their upholstery, making the possibilities endless. Meznar is a end-to-end business with a low carbon footprint, as customers are dealing directly with the manufacturer who creates each piece locally with only a 4-9 week lead time from ordering. They employ and train apprentices in the art of traditional cabinet making skills; and because each piece is made with love, care and only the best materials, they are guaranteed to last a lifetime. After the success of opening their Unley Road store two years ago, Peter and Carolyn are now taking the time to refresh their flagship store in Gawler. Carolyn and Peter’s son, Joe has been involved in the family business from a young age and is now manager of the Gawler store, ensuring a long future ahead of the business. “Our main goal is to keep quality, solid timber furniture manufacturing alive in South Australia. “We are looking into new technologies and developing new product lines to ensure that we build upon the strong foundation of the business to take it well into the future” Joe added. Meznar are in the process of aggressively clearing floor stock from their Gawler store to make way for exciting new ranges and a refreshed store. Meznar furniture is passionate about staying locally focused, employing 28 local staff in manufacturing and retail roles including three apprentices.
