It is a store like no other, The Co-op based in the heart of the Barossa. The name has changed over the years but the intentions are still there – to be recognised by its members and the community as an outstanding and sustainable provider to the region of a competitive shopping choice and retail services. The Community Store was formed in 1944 when the local shopping community rallied to purchase Sheard’s Department Store in Nuriootpa. One of Australia’s most successful retail cooperatives was born with an initial issue of 7,500 one pound shares held in trust by the first board of directors. Expansion was undertaken over the years with the opening of Barossa’s first self serve Foodland supermarket in 1965 and the hardware division was rebuilt and expanded in 1978. To cater for the expanding residential development, a furniture division was opened in 1987 and 10 years later the region’s first mall was built to house a purpose built large Foodland supermarket and eight specialty shops. In the 80s, membership in the Co-operative rapidly grew to in excess of 12,000 members and today there’s over 16,000. Major expansion and redevelopment became evident as the Co-operative fought to fulfill the community’s growing needs. Extensive borrowing in 1994 allowed the purchase of a major parcel of commercial land to the south of the town. This land included a large Mitre 10 hardware store which gave opportunity to merge and relocate the Co-operative’s existing hardware division to the new site. The Co-operative is continually developing its retail operation to consolidate its rapid sales growth. Employing more than 320 staff, the Cooperative continues to offer state of the art facilities, an emphasis on quality service, and a rebate to members (subject to profits) at the end of each trading year. With the retail sector continuing to change, the challenge for the Co-op is to drive their own retail divisions while introducing other complementary tenants to their shopping mix to strengthen the Barossa as a credible shopping destination of choice. Attracting new tenants is no easy task as the local wine industry and corresponding retail market face some of the toughest market conditions on record. However, the Co-op currently nurtures more than 20 tenants who positively impact on the shopping experience in the Barossa

Co-operatives continue to grow

Congratulations from local M.P.

Congratulations “the Co-op” on being the most successful retail co-operative in Australia, in this the International Year of Co-operatives Australia. It is fantastic to see the Co-op, a Barossa icon, representing the retail sector, on a 2012 International Year of Co-operatives Australia commemorative stamp. The Co-op has a long history in the Barossa – it is a store owned and run by the community, for the community. I am happy to be personally involved as a member of this excellent local business, providing great services to members and public alike. I wish the Co-op continued success into the future. IVAN VENNING, Member for Schubert

Ivan Venning, MP.

Congratulations to ‘The Co-op Heart of the Barossa’ on 68 years of trading in the Barossa region. Recognised as amongst the most successful co-op’s in Australia and owned by its community with over 16,000 shareholders. PATRICK SECKER MP, Federal Member for Barker.

Graeme Longmuir, Co-op CEO with Dame Pauline Green.

Mayor’s message In the Barossa, it doesn’t get more local than the Co-op. In this, the International Year of Co-operatives Australia, I’d like to personally congratulate the Barossa Community Co-operative Store on a long and proud history spanning 68 years. Now trading as The Co-op Heart of the Barossa, it is truly a community success story in every sense of the word. With over 16,000 shareholder members, it is owned by the community and operates for the community, and Barossa locals can be rightly proud to call it their own. It comes as no surprise that the Coop was born out of community zeal and determination when, in 1944, the local shopping community rallied to purchase Sheards Department Store. With strong leadership and a continued community focus, the Co-op went from strength to strength, undergoing major expansion and re-development to move with the times and a growing community. Today, is stands alongside Australia’s most successful consumer cooperatives in Australia, employing 320 staff

and boasting a range of tenants from individual retailers to national franchisees. However the founding principles of ‘quality’ and ‘service’ haven’t changed, and the Co-op continues to epitomise community spirit and prosperity. I wish the Board, staff and Coop customers all the best and I am confident of many more fruitful years to come. BRIAN HURN, OAM Mayor, The Barossa Council

Patrick Secker MP.

Wiech’s Barossa Valley Egg Noodles are proud of their long association with the Co-op. As a Co-operative, we congratulate them on the valuable part they play within our Community.

The Co-op supports Wiech’s and you can purchase and enjoy the full range of the Barossa’s Best Egg Noodles at the Foodland Supermarket, Nuriootpa. Brian Hurn.

During 2012, Co-operatives throughout the world are celebrating the United Nations proclaimed International year of Co-operatives. Co-operatives are growing at a time when many corporate structured businesses are struggling. Co-operatives are democratically controlled organisations which exist to provide sustainable services to their members demonstrate trust and ethical conduct in dealings and care for their communities. The Community Co-operative Store (Nuriootpa) Ltd is a very fine example of a retail Co-operative which cares for the Barossa Valley Community, by providing retail services of the highest standard, and sharing the surplus with its members. Turnover continues to grow and is now over $64 million. A significant portion of the profits are given back to the community each year to assist sporting clubs, schools and associations. The Community Co-operative is a significant employer of more than 320 local people and serves more than 16,000 members of the community. Many local businesses are able to have their products stocked by the business they own, and in this way the Co-op contributes substantially to the local economy. I commend The Community Co-operative on their fine achievements, which are truly a leading example of worldwide co-operative retailing. You are truly worthy of the name on your logo ‘THE HEART OF THE BAROSSA’. DAME PAULINE GREEN, President of the International Co-operative Alliance

International Year of Co-operatives

Exciting times ahead

Since joining The Co-op as CEO in February this year I have seen and experienced a lot of the exceptional things that the Co-op does for the Barossa. This is a unique business in Australian retail, one that the whole community should be particularly proud of. In this International Year of Cooperatives, it is pleasing to see that your Co-op store is continuing to launch new and exciting initiatives that will enhance our customers’ shopping experience and build on our strong community focus. In what is arguably the worst retail environment in 25 years, your Co-op is still able to prosper and thrive. This is a testament to the excellent work by all of the 320 Co-op team members. Without their commitment and skills The Co-op would not be such a strong and vibrant place to shop. It’s also important to recognize our strong and loyal customer base who continue to support all of The Co-op businesses. The co-operative model is very successful in more difficult economic times. The money stays in the local region, large amounts of local products are sold and many local people are employed. The Coop works on many levels. All the stores in The Co-op are performing well. Foodland continues to defy the negative trends and is growing strongly. It remains Australia’s largest totally independent supermarket. The Betta Homeliving store has

turned the corner and showing good signs of growth unlike many electrical stores. The apparel stores, Orchard Lane Boutique, Rod & Spur Outfitters, Barossa Surf and Barossa Sportspower are all showing growth following the move from the old department store location into the shopping centre. Both Mitre 10 stores are trading well and are above industry trends. Our Toyworld store, now one of the fastest growing in the Toyworld network, has some exciting plans leading into Christmas. The new Barossa Homeliving store is proving very popular with customers looking for a more modern and contemporary way of decorating their home. We continue to innovate with new and exciting projects being launched. The Online shopping experience through Foodland is proving extremely popular for those unable to get to the store or are time poor. The new Co-opCare giving back programme will enable the whole Co-op team to be out and about volunteering in our community over the next year. A new website will also be launched in a few weeks, allowing for greater feedback and input into The Co-op’s future. We are looking forward to an exciting future and the Co-op continuing to be an important part of what makes the Barossa world famous. GRAEME LONGMUIR Chief Executive Officer

Extensive community support

Through gift vouchers, rental assistance and sponsorship, the Co-op continues to give back to the Barossa community and beyond. Recognised as a major contributor to the local community, this year alone the Co-op increased donations and sponsorships by 11 per cent. It is The Co-op aim to continue to be a generous, trusted and valued part of our region. To sporting clubs alone $12,750 has been given with schools and associations receiving close to $16,000. Incidental donations equate to more than

$60,000 per annum. For support over $100 a formal application needs to be made prior to March 15 of each year. Successful applications are announced at the annual general meeting in June. Mr Graeme Longmuir, CEO, said at this year’s annual general meeting where the Coop revealed their support for the year, “We are keen to remain a leader in the community and we want to be a trusted partner as well as continuing to give donations to the community.”

International Year of Co-operatives

A reason to celebrate

Carol Goznick, Nuriootpa Foodland’s deli manager with Graeme Longmuir, CEO of The Co-op holding a framed print of the Australia Post Co-operative Sectors stamp collection.

Making this year the International Year of Cooperatives was a decision made by the United Nations General Assembly. The year is intended to raise awareness of the valuable contributions of co-operative enterprises to poverty reduction, employment generation and social integration. It also highlights the strengths of the co-operative business model. It is the first time the United Nations has awarded a business structure with an international status and locally The Co-op Store has a reason to celebrate. This promotion gives the region a chance to celebrate the International Year of Cooperatives, showcasing our own Co-operative situated right here in the Barossa. It’s one that was established more than 68 years ago and has evolved from a small store in Murray Street, Nuriootpa to a large operation which employs

more than 320 people across eight sites. Retail continues to face many challenges, yet the cooperative model and operation has demonstrated they are more resilient in economic downturns. It has been recognised and having the honour of the International Year of Cooperatives demonstrates the vital contribution co-operative enterprises make to the global socio-economic development. This is evident in the Barossa, with The Co-op increasing the total turnover in the last financial year but also continuing to support local organisations and community groups through donations and gift vouchers. The United Nations International Year of Cooperatives is a monumental year, which provides a platform to educate the public on the strength and socio-economic value of co-operatives.

According to the International Co-operatives Association, Global300 report (2011), the world’s largest 300 co-operatives generated revenues of USD 1.6 trillion – which is comparable to the GDP of the world’s ninth largest economy (Spain). This model is on track to become the fastest growing business model by 2020. In addition, Co-operatives innovate to meet the needs of their members, and may offer new products or services—ahead of competing businesses—because members ask for it. A commemorative coin has been released and Australia Post has come on board, launching a stamp which features the key industry groups of co-operatives which The Co-op were fortunate to represent in retailing.

The Beerenberg Family wish Foodland Nuriootpa Co-op all the success in the future.

Monumental year

MILESTONE: Earlier this year, Lyn Schmidt celebrated 30 years at The Co-op while Trevor Schmidt, celebrated 35 years. Both have seen many changes to the organisation as Lyn worked in a number of sectors before joining the administration team, while Trevor has been The Co-op secretary.

The United Nations International Year of Co-operatives is a monumental year, which will provide a platform to educate the public on the strength and socio-economic value of co-operatives. 1. This scalable – and successful - business model legitimizes
co-operatives on a global level and empowers them to be major economic forces within countries. According to the ICA’s Global300 report (2011), the world’s largest 300 co-operatives generated revenues of USD 1.6 trillion – which is comparable to the GDP of the world’s ninth largest economy (Spain). This model is on track to become the fastest growing business model by 2020. 2. The diverse, values-based business provides a sustainable source of revenue for communities and individuals – which builds lasting economic strength. Co-operatives operate in a range of sectors –

The Co-operative movement brings together over one billion people around the world. The United Nations estimated that the livelihood of nearly 3 billion people, or half of the world’s population, was made secure by co-operative enterprise. These enterprises continue to play significant economic and social roles in their communities.

ranging from banking, credit, housing, health, retail, food, utilities and agriculture. Co-operatives are owned by nearly one billion people across the globe. Co-operatives employ nearly 100 million people – 20 percent more than multinational enterprises. 3. As member-controlled businesses co-operatives employ democratic principles that put people first. Co-operatives promote the fullest possible participation in the economic and social development of all people, including women, youth, older persons, persons with disabilities and indigenous peoples. Co-operatives innovate to meet the needs of their members, and may offer new products or services – ahead of competing businesses – because members ask for it. Source: http://2012.coop

With a desire of wanting to give more back to the community, The Co-op has launched Co-op Care, a corporate volunteering programme. Along with Paul Amos, people relations manager, the senior leadership team showed their commitment to the project participating in the first Co-op Care day in Nuriootpa. “As a co-op we regularly give back to the community. There are donations, rebates on purchases and rental subsidies, but the question is, how can we give in a more hands on and visible way,” said Paul. “There are 320 people that work here and all amazing people with experiences, knowledge and skill bases. “It is about giving something back… this programme is about community organisations and helping out.”

The new project will enable staff to have one day off a year and volunteer in the community. It has been backed by Corporates 4 Communities, a government based initiative which matches volunteers from businesses with community organisations to make a difference to people in communities across the state. Barossa Districts Housing Association (BDHA) were the first local group to benefit from the generosity, with a backyard blitz taking place in Krieg Street, Nuriootpa. Other local businesses got involved too by donating their time, goods and services. For BDHA manager, Mr Dean Galanos, the support has been tremendous and assists in building a positive community.

The team of 13 from The Co-op repaired fences and planted gardens, taking away 13 trailer loads of garden waste. They have transformed the area to help create a sense of pride among tenants and the wider community. “There were tenants that couldn’t get over The Co-op’s presence,” said Dean. “That these people would give up a day to help out.” So now the challenge begins for The Co-op team, working closely with Corporates 4 Communities to enable volunteers to spend time at various locations and projects throughout the region. Those wishing to tap into the volunteer service need to register their organisation with Corporates 4 Communities, where they can access Co-op Care and other organisations with a volunteer team.

Staying on trend – online shopping Nuriootpa Foodland is one of five Foodland stores in the state which has embraced online shopping. It is a fantastic way for people to free up time, get more done and spend more valuable time with family and friends. By not having to make that trip to the supermarket the task balancing work and family will become a lot easier while still ensuring there is plenty of fresh and wholesome food in your pantry and refrigerator. Operating since March this year, Nuriootpa Foodland have found the concept has really taken off in the region as they deliver to approximately 100 customers per week, over a four day delivery service. “We cover a massive area from Eudunda to Williamstown, Cambrai to Tarlee and anywhere in between,” said Ken Hodges, Foodland manager. Members already know the store provides customers with the freshest and largest range of groceries, meat, fish and deli. This service brings that right to your door. Shop anytime from home and save time. Your groceries are delivered to your home, or workplace, and can be unpacked onto your kitchen benchtop if requested. You don’t even need to be home to accept the delivery, they have a

proven system to keep food fresh by being packed in foam boxes and ice. The aim is for Foodland staff to become your personal shopper, and to bring to you the freshest range and quality you expect in their supermarkets. There are plenty of benefits to online shopping - Nuriootpa Foodland is your personal shopper and provide premium quality fresh produce, direct to your door with minimal handling, ensuring quality and freshness. They provide consumers with a massive range of products with more than 20,000 items to select from. On the Nuriootpa Foodland website, a running total of your trolley is shown before purchasing, allowing you to shop to review your trolley, and shop to a budget. Nuriootpa Foodland shoppers take special care, selecting the best quality, freshest food for you. It is also about convenience. For an average shopper it could take more than two hours to shop the traditional way in comparison to as little as 10 minutes with this concept. International Year of Co-operatives New website celebrates Co-op heritage

A new website, recognising the history behind The Co-op will go live later this month. Since May, the information technology team have been working on the website revamp, to present a contemporary site that better represents The Co-op today. Rob Zander, information services manager, said the website celebrates the heritage of The Co-op while also offering visitors the modern features expected in today’s society. “The website is a central place that our customers can visit if they want current information about the stores and it now offers our customers the ability to contact us via email and online feedback in addition to talking to a real person over the phone,” said Rob. “Customers wanting to purchase groceries online can also access it via our website.” The new site allows viewing on most internet browsers, smartphones or tablets. It is another way for the Co-op to stay in touch with their members. “It keeps our members informed of latest news and upcoming sales around The Co-op,” said Rob. “Customers can keep up-to-date by visiting the website or subscribing to our eNews which can now be done on the website. “Current store hours and holiday times are also maintained on the website.” The new site will be more user friendly and provide up to date information about the Co-op.

“We’ve tailored the new site to give our members what they are after in a clean and fresh way without bombarding them with too many images, information or adverts,” said Rob. “We want our members and customers to find what they want quickly and without having to filter through pages of images or irrelevant information.” One section of the website that is particularly interesting is the history and archive area. “We have posted various photographs collected by the Coop over the years dating back to the early 1900s and plan to add more photographs in the coming months,” said Rob. “It’s all about providing better service and information to our members and continually improving the benefits to members. “We also understand that people are busy and we value their time, therefore we want to allow our customers to access more information online and be able to contact us when it’s convenient for them via email or through the feedback page, making the process more efficient and timesaving.” The website has been built on a dynamic platform that allows for change and growth as The Coop grows. This is the first stage of an ongoing plan to enhance the communication and services to members with more new features being added over the next few years.

Rob Zander, manager information services, is looking forward to the launch of The Co-op’s new website.

Turning jobs into careers

Paul Amos, The Co-op people relations manager with Faith Lutheran College work experience student Matthew Ryan and trainee, Sam Kruger.

The retail industry is the start of employment for many people, perhaps as a part time job while at school or to fill a gap before travelling. Those few hours a week help to foster many basic skills for the workforce and can lead to a career in retail. For many people employed with The Co-op, that’s exactly how it began. Collecting trolleys and stacking shelves before taking on roles, at various locations, across the business. “We know a lot of our people move across The Co-op into different roles with us,” said Paul. “There are so many examples of that, where people progressed up and through different BA12270-V3

sections.” Turning employment into a career has become an important aspect to The Co-op as they work with more than 320 team members across the enterprise. Mr Paul Amos, people relations manager, encounters the daily challenge of careers, employment, training and safety. “We know that retail is the biggest industry in Australia,” said Paul. “We also know in retail, that one in 20 people are managers.” Recognising careers in retail and fostering development, in early 2011, The Co-op created the Future Leader’s Development Programme which is aligned with the SA based Retail Executive Programme. As part of this, 32 current and future leaders are undertaking Certificate IV in Retail Management with an additional 15 people working on Certificate III in Retail. Ultimately, this will lead to a large number of The Co-op team having the opportunity to complete a Diploma of Retail Management and possibly leading further to a retail focused MBA. “We made the commitment early last year that we would actively upskill our people” said Paul. “The benefits are just incredible… to see our workforce grow in terms of capability and the staff turnover drops as a result. This in turn provides better career opportunities and employment stability for the Barossa community.” However, there’s also a need to work on attracting future employees which is why The Co-op have embraced school based trainees and work experience programmes. “There is a demand for work experience,” said Paul. “So we conduct work experience interviews to enable us to customize a programme which is split around the sectors… designing the right experience for each student. Matthew is a good example of that with his customized programme including an experience in Betta Home Living as well as Sportspower.” As part of the role, Paul will talk to students to discover what they want to learn to ensure their experience is relevant. There are times when it is agreed what can be offered, will not work for the student. Employment at The Co-op is in high demand, with between 50 and 70 applications for employment being received each month. To provide as many people as possible with an opportunity to be a part of the team, The Co-op has developed a new way of interviewing. The group interviews, which 50 secondary students attended recently to fill 20 junior positions, comprise a simulated environment on checkout, service deli and night fill. It allows Paul and the team to go beyond the resume, knowing they need people that can adapt and understand a variety of personalities. “It gives you an understanding of what the job is before you get into it,” said Paul. “We get so many applications every month, for positions we don’t have available. It is a popular place to work and everyone wants to work here. We look after people and the turnover rate is low.” Sam Kruger is one employee who is working his way through the ranks. Having his initial taste of The Co-op as a student undertaking work experience, Sam has embraced the opportunity to complete a school based traineeship while juggling school studies, training and employment. He relishes his role at Sportspower and where a retail career with The Co-op can take him.

Always listening, always innovating

Foodland manager, Mr Ken Hodges started working with The Co-op as a trolley collector and now steers the third largest independent supermarket in Australia.

He said there’s now a focus on bringing more products from local growers and producers into the store. “We are redoing the Barossa product stand and will be sourcing new, local products and growers,” said Ken. “There’s always something new happening here and in this business we need to do that. Customers appreciate different ideas. “It is a store that the Barossa community can be proud of and also be a place where tourists can come and shop too.” In addition to his manager role, Ken is a member of Nuriootpa Regional Community Association and is the co-ordinator of the main street garden volunteers. He is also part of the new programme, Barossa Future Leaders which was launched in August and is undergoing training in Certificate IV in retail as part of The Co-op’s commitment to professional development. “I still love what I do and am very passionate about what I do and very passionate about working for The Co-operative,” said Ken. “It is a great place to work and it does amazing things for the community and that’s improving all the time. “I love working in retail and to me retail is about being in amongst it on the shop floor. You can see what’s going on, the customers are out and about and you get a good feel for the business.” Ken said family support also plays a big role in him being able to do his job and acknowledged the support of wife, Linda and children, Alex and Sophie.

When Ken Hodges took on the role as a trolley boy after leaving school, little did he know it would lead to a successful career and the chance to lead Nuriootpa Foodland. Working in the supermarket, Ken took on the role of returning trolleys and stacking shelves and it wasn’t long before he found other roles within the small store which is now where the Barossa Home Living Centre is. “I knew at that stage retail was a career option for me,” he said. “I didn’t know at that stage I wanted to be a manager.” Ken remembers fondly the times he would take groceries out to peoples’ cars, saying it was a good chance to talk to people. “Thursdays and Fridays was car service days, you would help pack and take groceries to the car,” said Ken. “Most things were packed into boxes or paper bags.” Within a year of starting, Ken took on the role of frozen foods/dairy manager and after four years, he took on the role of store manager. “It all happened pretty quickly,” said Ken. “In the first few years there was nothing significant (that happened) but since then I have seen different stages of the business to the point where the board made the decision to invest in building the shopping centre and mall.” Ken now manages the truely largest independent supermarket in Australia and has played a key role in seeing the supermarket continue to evolve after it was opened nearly 14 years ago. “Half of my working life has been in the new location,” said Ken. “It is good to be involved in the changes, in what I find to be a very fortunate position where I am part of those changes.” Customers will continue to see changes at Foodland with Ken and his team excited about what 2013 will bring. “We are planning a very exciting refit including refrigeration and there’ll be a new concept in the meat department,” said Ken. Ken takes on the role and responsibilities in his stride, willing to lend a hand across all departments to ensure the store meets the high standard. But he also acknowledges the team of 200 staff – at least double to what Ken initially worked with. “I am very fortunate to have fantastic people that work in the supermarket,” he said. Ken is proud to say he has employed thousands of locals for varying roles at Nuriootpa Foodland, seeing them go on to other careers or remaining with the company. “I have employed most of the people but in the last year or so that has changed,” he said. “It is a great launching pad… not everyone stays in retail but the skills you get like talking to people and work ethic will help in any field.” There have been many highlights for Ken over the years, proudly representing Foodland and The Coop at seminars and presentation events. “There’s been lots of awards over the years from IGA for Store of the Year and lots of department ones too,” he said. “It is a good reward for the team but also good to be acknowledged by your peers that know your store is up to the highest standard.” Continually diversifying the offering at Foodland brings new challenges to Ken and the team.

The opportunity to support the community and work with a great team, keeps Mitre 10 manager Craig Dodman going. Joining The Co-op’s Mitre 10 store in 2003, Craig has seen many changes over the years. He came to Barossa Mitre 10 having owned and operated his own business in Kapunda. However, his experience spans across other sectors – being a sales rep for Solver Paints, a part owner of Lower North Traders and a qualified electrician. Craig admits one of the main reasons behind his desire to be part of Barossa Mitre 10, was the challenge a big store would offer. “The size of the business and having lived in Kapunda and a good part of my life in the Barossa, I knew of the Community Store and the success it had achieved over the years… it was always appealing to be part of it,” said Craig. Craig took on the role and it wasn’t long before he embarked on a total refit of the business – knocking down walls and introducing new fixtures in what he describes as a “generation 21 refit”. “We took every product off the shelf… and we did that as a team,” said Craig. It could be said this exercise was a test for what became bigger projects in years to come – the construction of the Barossa Mall extensions and the separation of Barossa Mitre 10 with a trade centre across the road. Craig is proud to associate himself with Barossa Mitre 10 and The Co-op ethos, particularly the structure of the co-operative. “It’s unique,” said Craig. “It is always a talking point and people love to hear about our membership. We have had a loyalty system for ever and

If the walls of the current Barossa Home Living could talk, there would be plenty of stories to tell. The original building of The Coop has been transformed over the years – initially being the supermarket and clothing store, to a department store and now Barossa Home Living incorporates Toyworld, furniture, beds, manchester, home décor, giftwares, kitchen essentials, floor rugs, kids’ wear and nursery. The changes over the years demonstrates The Co-op’s willingness to undertake new initiatives and continue to build on their retail offering for the Barossa and beyond. Barossa Home Living manager, Wayne Hampel has had varied roles with the co-operative, on and off, for more than 30 years and is excited about what the new store brings to the region. “After all the other departments relocated to the Barossa Mall, we were left with a large floor space,” he said. “So my aim has been to create a large Homeware’s Centre that caters to all of our customers’ needs.” Over the past 12 months the large building has been transformed from the inside – offering new lines but also a larger area to display beds, furniture and homewares. “The changes have caused

some disruption, particularly when walls were being demolished and the painting was under way, but with change comes some minor disruption,” said Wayne. “Our customers have been very accepting of it all, in fact they have been as excited as we have been watching the changes occur.” Plenty of planning and forward thinking has gone into Barossa Home Living with staff receiving daily comments from customers about how they like the new look store and the range that is on offer. “The Barossa Home Living store now offers a large and comprehensive range that caters for the needs of our members, community and tourists,” said Wayne. “Our difference is that we are a Co-op offering our members a rebate on all of their purchases and offering our members “member only” shopping experiences. “As the store manager and buyer I try hard to range an eclectic mix of products that are up to date with current market trends but at the same time offering the basics and favourites that our customers seem to always be looking for.”

A contemporary fashion destination

The extension of the Barossa Mall and the relocation of the traditional department store into three separate retail outlets, brought a new era of retailing to the Barossa. Rod and Spur, Orchard Lane Boutique and Barossa Sportspower and Surf bring a new shopping experience to the Barossa operating from the mall seven days a week, with friendly and knowledgeable staff in each store. Each manager has worked hard to develop their own business, tapping into buying groups that offer clothing, accessories and goods in well known brands and that are matched with competitive prices for the consumer. Paul Schupelius, Barossa Sportspower and Surf manager, said the relocation to the mall has made the store a destination. “It has made us a destination and increased our foot traffic into the store,” said Paul. “It has also become a lot more convenient for our customers and has made us a one stop shop with the supermarket.” Paul and his team pride themselves on a high level of customer service and ensuring the customers’ expectations are met. “We offer a broad range of the latest brands in sporting and surf accessories, footwear and apparel,” said Paul. “And we have a commitment to servicing the sporting community and the community as a whole. “We pride ourselves on having all the latest brands and being a division of The Coop we can give back through rebates and sponsorship.” Kathryn Kahl, Rod & Spur manager, has worked for The Co-op, in various locations for a number of years. She said the relocation to the mall has given shoppers a fresh, up to date, new menswear store. “What you can expect from Rod & Spur is to be able to have a choice when selecting from well-known menswear brands. Gazman, RM Williams, Ben Sherman, Levis to name just a few,” said Kathryn. “These brands are innovative in the use of fabrics, colour, style and quality, allowing men to dress with a confident style, comfort and value. “For our clientele we offer choices in work wear, men’s shoes, suiting, business wear and lifestyle clothing, in the brands that customers know and trust.” Gayle Byrum, Orchard Lane Boutique manager, said the move has allowed the store to offer fabulous products and services in a beautiful, modern, custom fit store. New customers are also surprised by the fantastic offer. “Our customers can expect to find a huge range of branded product with everything they will need for any occasion,” said Gayle. “Our customers should shop with us because we always have ‘something different’ available and our extra services are second to none.”

Co-operative’s part of Trevor’s life For most of his working life, Trevor Schmidt has been involved in co-operatives. For 35 years he has been the company secretary for The Co-op, overseeing all the financial side of the business and playing a secretarial role to the Board of Directors. Trevor said he believes in the cooperative philosophy and has seen tremendous growth in the Co-op including land acquisitions and building projects. “There has been excellent growth since the new supermarket opened,” said Trevor. “It was the coming of age of the Co-op building the mall. “We are sensitive to the town and the community and to the Barossa and want to preserve the great Barossa region that we’ve got.” Trevor said the Co-op is so unique and proudly added it is the most successful retail co-operative in Australia. “We are the biggest consumer retail cooperative in Australia,” said Trevor. “And are looked upon as an example in the retail world. “I am proud to be part of that and have an important role in the Co-op for half its life, which is very much part of the Barossa Valley culture and that’s a great culture and why it is successful.” Trevor has the honour of representing the Co-op at a gala event for the International Year of Co-operatives. This will be held in Port Macquarie later this month, where the Barossa’s own Maggie Beer will be a guest speaker. “It is very exciting to be able to represent The Co-op at the gala dinner and to share the story,” said Trevor. “Our Co-op is well known nationally in retailing and its one of the biggest cooperatives in South Australia.” With many co-operatives visiting the Barossa to understand more about how they function, Trevor said The Co-op likes to be market leaders in retailing. particularly with the information technology systems that are used and in paying a rebate back

to members. “Our rebate was the original loyalty scheme and almost without exception, the Co-op has paid a rebate every year,” said Trevor. “It is great to be part of a really enthusiastic team and everyone is excited about their businesses.” Trevor continues to play an important role as a member of the leadership team and said seeing the development and knowing the exciting aspects which are planned, adds to the enjoyment of coming to work. “We want to continue being the predominant retailer in the Barossa,” said Trevor.

Elva Falland works closely with The Co-op for the annual Melbourne Cup fashion parade fundraiser. She says the team at Orchard Lane Boutique, are very obliging.

Co-op goes the extra mile

Trevor Schmidt has been with The Co-op for 35 years.

Going the extra mile when it comes to assisting local groups is something The Coop is proud of. One example of this is with the Barossa Valley Lions Club and their annual fashion parade. Mrs Elva Falland, of Nuriootpa, has been liaising with The Co-op for the last 10 years on this project and has found the store and their staff to be very obliging. Working with Orchard Lane Boutique manager, Gayle Byrum together with Bev Saegenschnitter, the Lions Club has been able to deliver the region a Melbourne Cup event which raises funds for a local organisation. “The Melbourne Cup event really needs

a fashion parade,” said Elva, who works with the staff at The Co-op to ensure the parade and celebrations are a success. “It is a great day and I guess what they like too is that they help to raise funds for Barossa Village Auxiliary.” As a Co-op member, Elva enjoys attending the store’s fashion parades and added the new mall offers a different experience. “It shows women what goes with what and it gives you different ideas,” said Elva. Elva’s Co-op experience also extends to the family business, John Falland Australia, where they often access materials and tools for the work they undertake in their Nuriootpa workshop.

Betta Home Living bucks market trend

In a continually changing industry, The Co-op’s Betta Home Living is bucking the trend. The Nuriootpa store has survived the challenges presented with a Global Financial Crisis, online threats and slashing of prices in other stores to present sales figures which are up on last year and continue to increase as other stores experience double digit drops in turnover each year. For store manager, Dan Morgan, the success Barossa Betta Home Living has experienced is due to a number of factors. “There’s a combination of things that have helped buck the trend and help us stay above our last year’s figures, which for this industry is a rarity and for retail Australia wide,” said Dan. Barossa Betta Home Living is one of the biggest regional electrical stores in the state and the team pride themselves on customer service.

Betta Home Living has joined a stronger buying group in recent times enabling them to pass on the improved pricing to its Co-op members. Along with continual specials, monthly catalogues and bulk stack specials. Most importantly, after sales service is offered throughout the store with Dan saying, “We can provide the service to the community and the great pricing people want and expect. “We would like to think we have everything covered that the consumer wants. There’s also two finance options, Inrent, layby and The Co-op rebate too.” Betta Home Living moved into the current, purpose built facility in late 2005, with the previous store now their warehouse. “It is a much bigger offer for the community and the way of the future for this industry,” said Dan. “The way of the future is a big box style store with a large warehouse to take advantage of bulk deal pricing and passing that onto the customer.” Dan said it is important for the region to have a store the size of

Betta, matched with a wide selection of goods with more than 80 different brands represented across information technology, audio visual, white goods, small appliances and cooking. “There is also an element of understanding in the community that people do need to support local business because there is a reality that if they don’t it may not always be there,” said Dan. “We are very thankful for the support we receive from the local community and we try wherever possible to give back to the community in the way of sponsorship of local sporting groups, The Co-op Care programme and to provide jobs for our locals.” Dan has only recently joined The Co-op team as store manager of Betta and says it has been everything he hoped for. “Until becoming part of The Co-op team, I just didn’t realise what a fantastic organisation and great place to work, it is,” he said.
