Contributing Through The Ages
A message from the Chief Executive Officer
Mr Phil Schmaal, Barossa Village Chief Executive Officer.
Welcome to our annual Contributing Through the Ages Lift-out Feature which we have been running in conjunction with The Leader Newspaper for many years. As a community owned organisation, this feature provides one mechanism whereby we can communicate our philosophy of care and our range of services to the broader community in which we operate. Each year we try to put together a range of interesting stories which encapsulate the lives of our residents/clients and articulate some of the changes that are taking place in the services we provide – across the spectrum of independent retirement living, community and home care, and residential aged care. Barossa Village is the only provider in the region offering all of these services – providing choice and catering for all aspects of people’s housing and care needs as they age. A key focus for Barossa Village this year has been to work in partnership with the ACH Group to develop a Healthy Ageing Programme, to provide staff training, and implement the programme in a rural environment. During 2012/13 sixteen Barossa Village staff received training and a similar number of ACH staff also undertook training. Further staff training is planned.
Research shows with even the best intentions from health professionals, families and staff, elderly residents placed into aged care facilities often undergo an inevitable and sometimes rapid decline. Research also shows that the decline can in many cases be reduced with appropriate strategies and where the residents themselves can ‘adapt’ to their changed conditions and/or circumstances. Often residents tend to give over the control of their lives when entering a residential aged care facility – they lose momentum, perceive it is the norm now that they are in care, accept some family beliefs that they can no longer dictate their lifestyle or engage in meaningful activities. There has been a general mindset within aged care and the broader community that when people enter an aged care facility, they should be made as comfortable as possible whilst they live out their twilight years. That needs to change. “Nursing Homes” should no longer be viewed as “God’s Waiting Room”! The Healthy Ageing Programme challenges these long-held views regarding what aged care is all about, as well as challenging the residents themselves. While the programme will take several years to fully implement the early results are already showing reductions in the period of chronic
GENEROUS DONATIONS RECEIVED: Barossa Village would like to thank and acknowledge the following individuals and organizations for their generous donations to our Healthy Ageing Programme: Angela Falkenberg, Barossa Auto Care, Barossa Village Ladies’ Auxiliary, Chemplus One at Nuriootpa, Grays Pest Control, Ian Ross, Nuriootpa Medical Centre,

disability, extending healthy life expectancy and enabling physical and social participation that contributes to quality of life. The key to wellbeing is for residents to remain active, physically mobile and mentally alert. In conclusion, I must say that whilst the focus is and must be on our residents and clients, it is important not to overlook our staff. Working in aged care is not easy. A lack of government funding, unprecedented reforms and ongoing change, the impact of an ageing population, increasing levels of dementia, co-morbidities and increased health complexities in our clients – in a highly regulated and risk inherent environment – all make for a challenging and sometimes stressful workplace. Any organisation is only ever as good as the staff who work within the organisation, and at Barossa Village we are very fortunate to have a committed, professional and caring workforce – across all areas of operations. I thank them for their efforts. I would also like to thank The Leader and all of our suppliers who have supported the feature over the years, and hope that you, the readers, find the stories both enlightening and entertaining. Happy reading.

Lifestyle team leader, Julie Cartwright is aiming to bring Barossa Village lifestyle activities together, from the Independent Living Units and those receiving community services, to those in the Residency. Julie has been involved with aged care for more than 20 years, although she is a newcomer to Barossa Village. She has worked in diversional therapy, community services and has been a case manager. Julie is encouraging residents and service recipients to “embrace the community”, along with ILU liaison officer, Marilyn Kostrz. Marilyn, who is an advocate for those in the ILUs, is meeting this goal by helping to form a book club and craft club for the ILU residents.
Monthly concert
Personal carer, Ms Tania Traeger with some members of the knitting group, Teena Griggs, Shirley Maywald, Mavis Rushton and Lena Vereyken.
Barossa Village residents have enjoyed more than 400 concerts by the St Petri Singers over 41 years. Eleven months of the year the group, which currently comprises 18 ladies, present an hour variety concert for the enjoyment of residents. Hazel Mader has lead the group from the inception 48 years ago and started at Barossa Village after an invite from Matron Pamela Floyd. “We have a wonderful group of ladies that have continued to be part of the concerts,” said Hazel. She said it was great to see the response on the faces of the audience who enjoy the singing, jokes and instrumentalists. She added it has been a pleasant part of their lifestyle and they all look forward to their monthly visit.
Knitting for a cause
Marilyn Kostrz and Julie Cartwright are aiming to bring all of the Barossa Village community together.
Several Barossa Village residents are not only having fun in their knitting group, but also making a difference to the wider community. Barossa Village was approached by the Cora Barclay Centre at North Adelaide (for children with hearing impairments) about 16 months ago to help raise awareness. The Barossa Village ladies came together and have been knitting furiously ever since. After many months of hard work, their knitting was used to “yarn bomb” the Cora Barclay Centre and other parts of the street – covering parts of the building and trees. Senior Clinical Nurse at Barossa Village, Mrs Linda Nixon said they had been looking for something to give the ladies a sense of purpose and pride when they had been approached.
“They have developed a sense of community and purpose and have taken ownership over what they’re doing,” Mrs Nixon said. “The ladies were a little less involved than others when it came to activities, but now they sit together and chat.” The ladies have even taught staff member, Ben Ford to knit. Personal carer, Tania Traeger assists the ladies to knit twice a day. “We sit down and have a chat and some one-on-one time too,” Tania said. Tania, who is currently undertaking her Certificate IV in lifestyle and health, said she had fun helping to get the group up and running and was impressed with all of the yarn donations they had received. Staff and residents will also take part in loud shirt day to raise money for the Cora Barclay Centre.

50th Birthday celebrations Over the past 12 months Barossa Village has held a number of events and activities to celebrate 50 years of proudly serving the elderly residents of the Barossa region. Lunch and afternoon teas were attended by some 300 residents, clients and family members and provided opportunities to enjoy fellowship and entertainment. The events also provided an opportunity for staff and volunteers from across the various divisions of Barossa Village to work together – ensuring all residents’ needs were catered for.
Whilst the organisation was originally incorporated in February 1963 (under the then name of the Barossa Valley Senior Citizens’ Homes Nuriootpa Incorporated), the vision and foresight of then community leaders such as Arthur Reusch, Clarrie Maywald and Martin Dallwitz to establish community owned facilities to care for elderly residents, long preceded that date. The establishment of Barossa Village was made possible through the inspiration and work of the Nuriootpa War Memorial Community Centre Committee, drawing on the legacy of town benefactor, William Coulthard.
Fran Binder, CEO Phil Schmaal and Margaret Bygraves cut the cake to mark 50 years of Barossa Village.

Barossa Village band prepares to play Working for successful futures
The sound of guitars, maracas and tambourines can be heard at Barossa Village, with a newly forming band coming together to celebrate music. Senior clinical nurse at Barossa Village, Mrs Linda Nixon said the idea for the band is all part of their healthy ageing direction. “Just because people come into residential care, it doesn’t mean they have to stop what they love to do,” Linda said. She said they were lucky to have two musically talented staff members at the Residency, Mr Ben Ford and Mr Gary Wharton. “I thought, how can we use the skills they have? And then I looked at the number of residents who have musical talent and one of our residents, Mr Ron Doecke, is part of the Marananga Brass Band. “It was a natural progression to start a band.” The aim is to have the band eventually play in the community, possibly at schools. Linda said the band was all about making sure the residents kept active and enjoyed their activities. “For too long, people have considered aged care as being somewhere that is quite dull and boring. “But really, it’s just the beginning of a different lifestyle.”
Resident, Mr Ron Doecke plays his tenor horn in the Marananga Brass Band, and has been doing so since he was just 15, when his brother encouraged him to join. He hasn’t had to give up his passion, with Barossa Village staff making sure he still gets to play with the band, as well as the burgeoning band at the residency.

Focusing on Healthy Ageing Lifeblood of the community Volunteers are the lifeblood of any community, and those at Barossa Village help with many everyday services. These volunteers include activity helpers, Independent Living Unit volunteers and drivers. Barossa Village are currently calling out for more drivers to help take residents to appointments, services and church on Sundays. Drivers for access cabs are also needed, to help those who otherwise may find it difficult to travel. Volunteer co-ordinator at Barossa Village, Mrs Vanessa Steinert said all training is provided for volunteers, so they can feel comfortable and safe about helping others. “Volunteering is very rewarding because you’re helping someone get access to different activities,” Mrs Steinert said. Mr Budgie Ward has been volunteering for Barossa Village for about three years and loves helping others. “My parents passed away and they were in aged care so I thought I’d like to help people like them,” Budgie said. Over the past few years, Budgie has driven an access cab, helping
residents get to appointments. “It’s pleasing to help someone in a wheelchair that may not otherwise be able to get around. “They would find it difficult so this makes life easier for them.” Budgie said it was nice the residents were always appreciative of his help and recommended volunteering for others. “It’s rewarding and if you’re thinking about it, just do it.”
Barossa Village volunteer, Budgie Ward enjoys driving residents to their appointments.
Bushfire ready In approaching this issue, family involvement and support has been crucial. “We are very much focused on looking after the people we care for,” said Carl. “And assisting clients to be bushfire ready and there’s options for them to create their own bushfire plan.” Each contractor and member of the Barossa Village team carry their own bushfire kits in vehicles and monitor the systems in place to ensure they are up to date on any bushfire incidents. “We can use that to pre-warn clients and contractors,” said Tom. “We want everyone to be aware that what we set up from last year and this year continues to evolve and it requires extra effort every year.” Ms Cherri Bindley, general manager care services, said while all of this is in place and ready, the team hope that it won’t need to be activated. “We are going into the season well briefed,” said Cherri. “I am quite proud of this… the guys have put a lot of work into it.”

NORDIC CHAIRS An affordable, stylish, space saving & comfortable option.
When Barossa Village’s Independent Living Unit residents need a handyman, maintenance worker, Tim Trudgen is always there to lend a hand. The former Telstra dealership owner took a turn in his career after working as a general builder. His experience in building gave Tim hands-on skills, as well as people skills, which he uses every day. “It’s a great opportunity to use lots of different skill, it’s not just about the hands-on work, it’s about the people,” Tim said. Tim works for 170 ILU residents, fixing anything from leaking taps and overflowing gutters to putting up picture hooks and replacing light bulbs. When he first started in his role, he was able to meet many of the residents while he was carrying out preventative maintenance – servicing air conditioners and checking batteries in fire alarms.
He enjoys being able to do something different each day and getting to know the residents. “The variety is great, I’m calling on different people every day. “It feels like I’m knocking on a friend’s door.” While Tim admits he can’t do everything, he said he’ll give anything a go and call for help when necessary. Tim said the whole maintenance team at Barossa Village were great and worked well together. Nuriootpa Independent Living
Unit resident, Mrs Rosemary Shearer said Tim was a blessing in disguise. “He can turn his hand to anything, he’s a real Mr Fix-it,” Mrs Shearer said. “He’s very tidy, quick and pleasant.” Mrs Shearer, president of the Residents’ Association said all members agree Tim is a “gem”. “My home was starting to flood one night and he came as quickly as he could, it was late at night, but he was still just as pleasant.”

As the weather warms up and the risk of bushfires increase, the team at Barossa Village is ready to implement their plans. A 12 month project in response to the Victorian bushfires in 2009 has resulted in Mr Tom Herring, case manager and Mr Carl Helbig, coordinator quality, risk and compliance to step up the awareness of bushfire dangers and put plans in place should the region experience bushfire warnings, or at worst, bushfires. While they launched the programme last year, with help from CFS, the organisation has this year been able to educate residents, their families and contractors in rural areas and townships. “The response has been very positive,” said Carl. “What we are trying to focus on is the day where there is extreme and catastrophic conditions. We still have to look after clients and people who service those clients as well. “If we need to modify services… there is planning in place that we will cater for the clients as much as we can.”
