Incorporated in 1963, owned by the local community, for the local community. Whilst there are a number of aged care providers within the region, Barossa Village is the only aged care provider in the region providing a onestop shop ….. providing choice and catering for all aspects of people’s housing and care needs as they age. T h i s i n cl u d e s : I n d e p e n d e n t retirement living; Home Support and Community Care; Home meal services; Respite for whose family members providing care; Transitional Care Placement when people need help adjusting to go home following hospitalisation; Residential Aged Care; and Dementia Care and Palliative Care services across both Home Care and Residential Care. Many of the services are unique. Barossa Village employs some 230 staff and engages with over 100 volunteers to provide a streamlined and integrated approach to people’s changing care needs as they age. Barossa Village directly supports over 400 elderly people within the region, as well as their extended families. Annual turnover exceeds $10 million and net assets, after deducting liabilities, total approximately $20 million. Barossa Village currently provides retirement living options by way of 165 cottages in clusters throughout the three main towns of the region. Further expansion is planned as opportunities arise. The 73 funded Home Care Packages currently support elderly people living at home. Barossa Village plan to significantly grow these packages to meet increasing demand. Construction will commence in late 2014 to increase capacity in the Residential Aged Care Facility from 80 to 100 beds, including a 20-bed dementia specific unit.

We l c o m e t o o u r a n n u a l Contributing through the Ages Lift-out Feature which we have been running in conjunction with The Leader Newspaper for many years. As a community owned organisation, this feature provides one mechanism whereby we can communicate our vision and our services to the broader community in which we operate. Each year we try to put together a range of interesting stories which encapsulate the lives of our residents and care recipients and articulate some of the changes which are taking place in the services we provide – across the spectrum of independent retirement living, community and home care, and residential aged care. Barossa Village is the only provider in the region offering all of these services - providing choice and catering for all aspects of people’s housing and care needs
as they age. Our vision and the words you will often see included with our corporate logo are “To be actively engaged in ageing”. What does this mean? One example is several weeks ago I was invited to attend the 6th birthday celebrations for our Village Gym. The celebrations were held on a Sunday afternoon at the Zion Lutheran Church Hall in Angaston, including a concert of musical and vocal performances, Tai Chi demonstrations, and displays of a whole range of handcrafts and artwork. All performances and the displays were from people who are active Gym members. This was just one example of active people living life to the full. Our vision over six years ago when the Village Gym was conceived was not only to provide appropriately relevant and supervised fitness programmes
for people in the region aged over 55 years, but also to provide opportunities for and to encourage social networks and broader participation within communities and in a range of activities. Anne-Marie Bartholomaeus was appointed Gym Co-ordinator and was given pretty much a free hand to develop the gym programme. Over the six years the Gym has grown several times over and includes people aged in their 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. I think AnneMarie has certainly delivered against that original vision. And yes, a good physical workout at the Village Gym followed by coffee and cake with friends is actively engaging in ageing! I would also like to thank The Leader and all of our suppliers who have supported the feature over the years, and hope that you, the readers, find the enclosed stories both enlightening and entertaining. Internal TV keeps everyone involved of Eden by David Bell. “David has designed this DVD to instill a sense of people and wellbeing and is particularly suited to health services, aged care and places where a tranquil environment is important.” The channels are also used as a way to broadcast church services and community events to those who are unable to attend. “We have the capacity to show events that happen at the residency to residents who are unable to leave their rooms,” said Mr Kowald. “We have also used this resource to show church services and other community events to the residents. “We are also using it as a tool to show
residents what events are coming up and show pictures of activities that have happened here. “It is a unique product and something we are quite proud of,” he said. Mr John Mayger of Barossa Village thought of the idea and is continually trying to innovate. “It is great for the residents and keeps them informed about what’s going on in the organisation. “We are working on streaming events live from the venue to residents’ rooms,” he said. “There are plenty of new ideas in the pipeline.”

An innovative internal television network has been installed at the Barossa Village residential aged care facility to keep everyone involved with the organisation’s activities. There are currently four in-house channels on which DVDs, Internet programmes and the village’s own programmes are broadcast. Mr Matt Kowald, General Manager of Residential Services at Barossa Village thinks the channels are very important. “Currently we have a channel dedicated to images and music to assist in managing people with dementia,” he said. “It is also designed as a relaxation channel, using resources such as Mirror

Contributing Through The Ages 2014 Services to suit Ruby’s changing needs After a fall in 2012, Nuriootpa resident and Barossa Village client, Ms Ruby Bowden returned home from hospital with an increased need for support to continue to live independently. Originally 87-year-old Ruby became a client of Barossa Village in July of 2011 and received services including housekeeping duties, transport to appointments and shopping. Before her return home, Barossa Village were able to liaise with the hospital and an occupational therapist to assess the need for increased home care services, equipment and support during her recovery. Some new furniture was brought to Ruby’s home along with some handrails installed around her house with an aim to support her, keep her comfortable and prevent another accident from occurring. Ruby says that she enjoys the independence she can experience living in her own home with support services from Barossa Village and the way in which services have adapted to suit her changing needs. After her fall in 2012, Ruby trialed a residential care respite placement but decided that it wasn’t an option for her, choosing to remain in her own home with increased assistance. “I am a private person and am very happy with my own company,” she said. “I enjoy mixing with other people but residential care would have meant I would have been part of a group most of the time.” Ruby enjoys living at her home in Nuriootpa with her 14-year-old cat, Jess and says that she enjoys looking after her pet and keeping in touch with her family. At 87 years of age, Ruby enjoys eating out and Barossa Village sub-contracts Ruby’s carers to another service provider to give extra support for Ruby’s social activities. “My carers are just wonderful,” said Ruby. “I marvel at the fantastic job they do and how they get things done so quickly.” Ruby now receives daily visits of a short duration from carers to assist her with every day jobs and to maintain her independence. The 24 hour on call service provided by Barossa
Barossa Village has assisted 87 year old Ms Ruby Bowden to live independently following a fall in 2012. Village has also helped to give Ruby the peace of mind to know that help is just a phone call away. “The 24 hour on call service is wonderful,” said Ruby. “My case manager, Rosie is very approachable and I feel comfortable to speak to her if I am at all anxious about anything.” Ruby is happy to be able to remain in her home and says that she wouldn’t be able to do so if it weren’t for the services and staff of Barossa Village. “This is my family home, where I raised my children and where our family memories are,” said Ruby. “Its important for me to stay here and I hope to remain living in my home for as long as possible. “I couldn’t manage without assistance from Barossa Village and I really like living in such a nice community.”
Increased services for Norm’s lifestyle
Barossa Village client, Mr Norman (known as Norm) Shrubsole’s lifestyle took a change in mid 2013 when his beautiful wife, Vera passed away. At 90 years of age, Norm admits that Vera was very much the homemaker of the family, a wonderful cook and took care of him well. Vera and Norm both became clients of Barossa Village in September, 2010 and received services including housework duties, transport to appointments and a drive to Norm’s destination of choice once a month. When Vera fell ill, Barossa Village provided support to the couple and continued to support Norm with increased services after her passing. “I am very grateful for the services of Barossa Village,” said Norm. “Without the carers coming in to visit and help me out I think I would have been very lonely and I wouldn’t have known what to do.” As well as increased services to Norm’s Barossa Village package including weekly shopping, meal preparation and gardening services, Norm is able to visit the cemetery. Having always enjoyed the wonderful food cooked by Vera previously, Norm had to learn to use a microwave at age 89 to heat up his favourite meals prepared by a carer from Barossa Village. Norm prepares his own breakfast each morning and says that the system, which includes weekly shopping and meal preparation by a carer, works well for him. “Not having Vera to help out with
the meals meant that I had to learn to use the microwave in order to stay independent,” he said. Staff at Barossa Village also encouraged Norm to wear an emergency pendant and this pendant assisted him one night during a power failure. “I walked out to the kitchen to get a glass of water and the power went out,” said Norm. “I didn’t know how to find my way back to bed after trying several times. “I pressed the pendant and the ambulance service came and helped me back to bed.” Initially after Vera’s passing, Norm’s sons were concerned with the idea of independent living and thought it best that Norm move into residential care. Norm wanted to stay in his family home and staff at Barossa Village were able to sit down with his family and advocate his decision. Norm has now been living independently at home for a year and there has been no looking back for him. “I don’t know where I would be without the support of Barossa Village,” he said. ‘”Once I lost Vera I thought that was the finish, but now I am confidently doing things on my own. “My wonderful sons are very supportive and come and visit me on the weekends. “I still enjoy going out for drives to look at farmland and grapevines and keeping my house up to standard.”

Contributing Through The Ages 2014 Linda keeping active and independent at 97 “This reassured me that everything would be ok and I was able to get my purse back. “I slept really well after talking with Michelle that night.” Barossa Village carers also assist Linda by taking her to appointments. “This is very handy because it means that I don’t have to organise a taxi or other service and I am being driven by a carer that I already know well,” said Linda. Linda is pleased that the services provided to by Barossa Village have allowed her to maintain a sense of independence and have provided peace of mind for her family. “I really couldn’t live independently without the support of Barossa Village carers,” said Linda. “It has enabled me to live the life that I want to live at home and be happy. “It’s a wonderful life and I quite enjoy my own company.”
Living your best life is Fay’s priority Personal experience has allowed Ms Fay Millington to see the value of maintaining independence in people’s lives. The General Manager, Community Care Services returned to Barossa Village in November 2013 after previously working in the same position back in 2011/2012 on a nine month contract. With more than 20 years’ experience across the private, public and not-for-profit sectors, including eight years at Domiciliary Care SA, Fay also brings expertise management. But it’s caring for her elderly parents that has taught her the most valuable lessons. “I have learnt a lot about how older people feel about retaining their independence from my parents. My Dad, who passed away at the grand age of 95 always made it clear that he wanted to keep on doing things for himself. He also ensured he remained mentally alert by being a volunteer Secretary and Treasurer for an organisation into his 90s, doing mathematical calculations and being a voracious reader. ‘You use it or lose it,’ he used to say while tapping the side of his head,” she said. Fay’s mother still lives independently, even after a serious fall involving multiple injuries. “Mum remained positive and followed the rehab programme to restore her mobility back to her previous level.” The Barossa Village Community Care Services division provides a wide range of community services to help keep older people living at home. “Barossa Village is the only service provider in the region to offer the full range of home care services to assist older people remain independent at home,” said Fay. “We currently have over 70 Home Care Packages for both low and high care needs.” Home Care Packages are subsidised by the Australian Government and require an assessment by the Aged Care Assessment Team. Barossa Village has applied for more packages for the local region. “We have a waiting list for people with high care needs and we are keen to expand our services so that more of our older people in the community can receive the Government subsidised packages. “Our ‘Barossa Home Care’ service is for people who wish to pay for services to help them remain active in the community and live at home. This is also a way for people on a home care package to top up with extra services beyond the funding level of their package,” said Fay.

Barossa Village run lifestyle activity programmes, their funded programme at the Joy Rice Centre on Mondays and Thursdays offer older people, including those with dementia, the chance to socialise and do activities such as craft work. “At the moment, some ladies attending the programme are knitting squares for us to donate blankets to the Hutt Street Centre and slippers with soles for the residents at The Residency in Atze Parade. Fay said there are some places available for Thursday’s programme. Other lifestyle activities include the Friday café lunch at the Joy Rice Centre and day trips on Tuesdays. Barossa Village also work with the Lions’ Club to offer the Tinker Shed on Wednesday mornings for older people who want to do craft work in a functional workshop. Basic services provided by Barossa Village for people over the age of 65 include home maintenance, domestic assistance (housework) and social support. “The social support service is about helping people to be socially active in the community or to receive social contact while at home. Social isolation can negatively impact on a person’s wellbeing so it is important that people remain connected with their community. “The Australian Government has introduced a new ‘Consumer Directed Care’ approach to Home Care Packages which will enable clients to have greater choice and control about the services they receive,” Fay said. More transparency around the finances for each client’s package is another feature of the new approach. “Consumer Directed Care will offer our clients even greater flexibility to receive services that meet their care needs and goals for living independently at home. “Introducing the Consumer Directed Care approach, along with expanding services for older people in the Barossa Region are my priorities for the next year,” said Fay. Barossa Village visits Linda and helps by completing jobs in her garden that she finds hard to do herself. “I love my garden and still enjoy getting out and about and doing odd little jobs,” she said. Although Linda receives assistance in many areas from carers at Barossa Village, she admits that she enjoys doing her own house keeping where she can and won’t go to bed with an untidy house. “I keep my house neat and I tidy up every night before bed because I like to start fresh each day,” she said. Barossa Village also provide a 24-hour on call service to clients and Linda has found this to be a very beneficial system at times. Last month Linda was able to use this service when she became anxious after misplacing her purse. “I became concerned when I realised that I had left my purse inside of a walker I had been trying out,” said Linda. “I used the on call service and spoke to my case manager, Michelle.

At age 97, Tanunda resident, Ms Linda Wallent has no plans to slow down and still enjoys gardening and cooking on a daily basis. Linda enjoys doing some of her own grocery shopping and can often be seen walking down Murray Street, Tanunda with her walker, visiting the bank and catching up with friends and family for coffee. Linda became a client of Barossa Village in April of 2009 and says that she is happy to still have the independence of living in her own home with some assistance. “Carers from Barossa Village come in each evening to make sure that everything is ok and help me out with some small chores that I need a hand with,” said Linda. “Every second Tuesday a carer will come in and wash my sheets, vacuum and clean my house. “I also write out a shopping list for bigger items and a carer will do that shopping for me.” Once a month a gardener from

Earlier this year, Barossa Village installed Leecare, a comprehensive planning system, which is of benefit to both staff and residents. Leecare is a programme that allows Barossa Village staff to clearly document residents’ care needs. Mr Matt Kowald, General Manager of Residential Services at Barossa Village is happy to have the new technology on site. “Leecare allows us to document residents’ care needs more clearly and easily than ever before,” he said. In August, the village underwent a Wi-Fi upgrade to complement the Leecare system. “Leecare works really well on wireless devices and is designed to be used at the bedside,” he said. “The installation of this network has enabled us to be able to reliably use and access systems of point of care. The upgraded Wi-Fi system will also benefit the residents’ Internet use. “Residents can have ticketed access to the Wi-Fi network and they can use their devices in their rooms,” he said. “We have residents who regularly use Skype to communicate with family and friends throughout Australia and the world. “Previously they had used 3G dongles to access the Internet and use these systems, which is both costly and not always reliable. “We now have the ability to have ticketed guest access to Wi-Fi. This is not a standard in aged care facilities and it is an example of how we are offering consumers additional choices.” Mr Josh Helbig of Kodo Technology is also impressed with the new wireless system. “This technology offers the fastest possible speed for the latest smartphones, tablets and laptops on the market he said. Residents are now able to access the Internet on their own devices and use services such as email and Skype to talk to relatives anywhere in the world.” The use of Skype is also useful for the medical staff. “Doctors can access residents via Skype as well,” said Mr Kowald. “Since the introduction of the Wi-Fi network we have had doctors consult with clients via Skype. This gives the doctors the opportunity to see and hear residents and has aided their practice. “Medical practices have had this process supported by Medicare Local and the silver connections project. Mr Kowald explained how the upgrade is part of a re-development, which will include 20 new beds and create a dementia specific area to assist in managing people with higher needs.

Not even 12 months into calling the Barossa home, Bob and Anne Robins feel like they have been here for sometime. Bob and Anne took a vine change, moving from the Clare Valley to the Barossa in January this year after securing an Independent Living Unit (ILU) with Barossa Village. Anne said it feels as if they have been in the Barossa for sometime, after ill health and a large garden assisted in their decision to downsize. “People said we would miss Auburn but I am not one to look back and I make the most of the moment,” said Anne. “We are not far from Adelaide or the Clare Valley and our friends like to come to the Barossa.” Maintenance and gardening of their three bedroom home is taken care of by Barossa Village’s team, easing the stress levels for many including Bob and Anne. “I just find it very stress free living,” said Anne. “If anything goes wrong, they will come and fix it up. What Bob could do once, it’s now easy to make a call. “We also like the way they have built the cottages in clusters so that we are independent but have a sense of support from our
neighbours.” The Barossa Village maintenance and gardening department attend to periodic maintenance in a timely, efficient and effective manner – including seasonal gardening and preventative maintenance. The workforce includes a qualified carpenter, cabinet maker, painter/decorator and horticulturalist. It is with this expertise that Anne was able to add her own touches to their garden. “I worked with the gardeners and had a few things changed,” said Anne. “It is the first time someone has dug a hole for me in my life.” ILU maintenance co-ordinator, Mr Tim Trudgen said “our continued focus is on improving customer service, co-ordination of works and the delivery of various services.” Enjoying the opportunity to remain independent but have a list of services and support nearby, Anne has also welcomed the guidance of planning for the future. “Even though we manage very well at the moment, we are about to make plans so that if anything happens to me, Bob will be looked after,” said Anne.

An opportunity to downsize yet still keep their caravan was a win, win for Nuriootpa’s Bob and Sue Waples. Bob and Sue, aged in their 60s, have been residents of the Barossa Village Independent Living Unit (ILU) community for the last two years. It was time travelling in their caravan after living in Greenock that assisted in the decision to move to the Barossa Village initiative. “Our house at Greenock was five bedrooms, an acre of land and we could see down the track we would have issues that may not make it convenient,” said Bob, a contract accountant. It was while travelling, the pair considered whether to downsize and buy a smaller property in the Barossa that could be resold at a later date or investigate the independent living option. “We didn’t rush into it,” said Bob. “We had a couple of years where we travelled and a period back in the Barossa where we made the decision.” Bob said experiences with his parents and Sue’s mother also helped in working towards making a decision, rather

than leaving it until further challenges or issues may arise. “We thought, maybe we should be proactive and eliminate some of the issues that could arise down the track,” said Bob. “It is vital for people to at least consider the options… go and have a look, don’t make the call without looking.” Bob said their Nuriootpa home is still “lovely and big” and he and Sue are living in more of a house now than they were in Greenock. While their home isn’t in a cluster like other independent living unit initiatives Barossa Village has, Bob said it suits them and they are still able to access the complete services from maintenance and gardening and other support services. ILU maintenance co-ordinator, Mr Tim Trudgen said there are always new faces joining Barossa Village community. “We seem very good at extending a friendly smile and handshake,” said Tim.
