Tax Breaks for Small Business Take advantage now! In the recent budget, the government announced several benefits for small business including accelerated depreciation. In summary: • Who Benefits: business with an annual turnover of less than $2 million a year. • What does it apply to: The write off can be used for anything to help run a business; gym equipment, tools, machinery, kitchen equipment, computers, office furniture, coffee machines and the like. The write-off cannot be used to buy stock, office software or marketing materials.

Tax break supports BUSINESS, & FINANCE small TAX business Small businesses across the region are encouraged to take advantage of the Federal Government’s $20,000 tax break. Announced last month in the Federal budget, the temporary increase allows for an instant asset write off. The Co-op’s marketing manager, Ms Amber Rushton said they are already seeing businesses across the region make the most of the initiative. “For small or mum and dad businesses there is a huge amount of reductions,” said Amber. “Personal trainers at home, software for the office, coffee machines… things you may have put off buying.” Amber said it is a great opportunity for business owners to “go on a bit of a shopping spree” given the initiative is uncapped. “It covers anything that requires you to run a small business,” said Amber. “So for a car mechanic you could buy a small car, tools, a coffee machine for your customers to use, new desks and chairs… you could update the staff room.”

Amber said a lot of the stores within The Co-op are able to assist business owners in this deal, which runs until July 2017. “It gives businesses an opportunity to spread purchases out over a period of time,” said Amber. “With the rebate coming up soon you can reuse your rebate for buying things for the business.” Amber added staff are more than happy to help businesses take advantage of this scheme, which in turn helps business to prosper and keeps money within the region. “There is so much opportunity,” said Amber. “There has never been a better time to buy for business. There’s huge sales coming up… you can buy on sale and buy local and get the rebate.” And Amber said the best part is you can buy beyond June 30. “We have seen a lot of our products marked at tax time deals walking out the door,” said Amber. “People realise the end of financial year is coming up and they need to get their tax affairs in order.”

By John Stankevicius, Jonas and Associates Over the past few weeks I have been writing about the advantages of cloud accounting for businesses but it is also tremendously advantageous to the household. Householders are able to access their bank statements on line and process them to prepare the family’s “Profit and Loss Statement” and “Balance Sheet.” This is a great way to measure the worth of the family. When I ask clients if they have prepared a household budget the majority of them say “no” followed by “I am too scared to see how much we spend.” But it is never too late to start accounting for the family’s budget and a savings plan. This has become an increasingly major issue over the years with high real estate price, big loans and the cost of day to day living. I have had numerous clients come in after continually going to their mortgage broker and refinancing for an additional $20,000 or more. We sit them down and work out what money comes in and what it is spent on. One of the biggest reasons for financial duress seems to be the rental property. In one instance a high earning couple were netting $120,000 after tax while their loan repayments totalled close to $100,000. It is little wonder they were going to their mortgage broker to increase their loan just to live. A family budget compared to the family financial statement is an extremely powerful tool as the family is able to plan for future events and therefore take control of their financial future. Savings plans begin to form, investments are purchased and tax minimisation arrangements are put in to place to maximise the family’s wealth. The savings plans are affordable by the family and all sorts of ingenious ideas are forwarded to improve the family’s lifestyle. Further, the family is working from their actual figures and not from the banker’s average figures of 40% of salary or some other percentage measure. These averages seldom are met in reality and are one of the reasons why people have over extended financially. This is especially the case for real estate where the average percentages of what is affordable are low and do not take into account abnormal circumstances such as strata levies or land taxes. Cloud accounting if used diligently is a valuable tool for the family to plan for their financial survival and saving for retirement.

You must keep a dairy detailing the representative use of the office space for a four week period, each year, to substantiate the claim. From the recent federal budget for small business, the purchase of each and any business related asset costing less than $20,000 (net of GST if registered) after 7.30 p.m. on May 12, can be claimed as an immediate deduction once installed ready for use or is being used (i.e. must be physically in your presence to make the claim, not just ordered). From 1 July 1, 2015, the tax rate for small businesses that operate through a company will reduce from 30% to 28.5% and for other tax payers (i.e. sole traders, partnerships) will receive a a discount of 5% of the tax payable attributable to business income (to a maximum of $1,000. From 1 July 1, 2016, all primary production businesses can immediately deduct the full cost of fencing, construction of water facilities (dams, windmills, pumps, etc.) and depreciate over three years the cost of new fodder storage assets (i.e. silos, hay sheds). Where a primary production business qualifies as a small business they are able to choose to claim the full costs of fodder storage if the items are less than $20,000. Taxpayers should make sure that all income received is detailed, even if you have not physically received it in cash, you may still have taxable income (for example share dividend reinvestment plans, interest rolled over on term deposits). This information is now made available direct to the ATO from the institutions and they can come back in future years and give you a nasty surprise if omitted. To maximise deduction in this current year: • If you own a rental property maybe bring forward minor repair expenses beforeJune 30; • Prepay tax deductible expenses for the next 12 months, for example income protection insurance, investment property or margin loan interest. • Keep details of every one of your deductible expenses, no matter how big or small they are, they all add up. When making a work related motor vehicle claim using the kilometre rate, you can only claim 5,000 kms per car you own. The 5,000 kilometres is per car per owner so if you rotate cars with your spouse and you both use your car for work purposes you could claim up to 10,000 kms each. To be eligible to claim donations, make sure that the charity is a registered “deductible gift recipient” (including school building fund contributions). A charities status can be checked at www.abn.business. gov.au. Remember to claim the costs associated with preparing your tax return including travel to and from your accountant. If you perform all or part of your employee duties from home, in addition to claiming for the actual work expenses (ie. stationery, telephone, internet use, decline in value of equipment, except furniture) with doing those duties, a claim can be made for the running expenses of an associated home office (ie heating, cooling, electricity use and decline in value of furniture). The ATO has a set rate of 34 cents per hour for the use of a home office.

Cloud software is paid for in monthly subscriptions, and there is no need to install and run applications over a desktop computer. The cloud is one of the most secure ways to store information. If someone were to steal your storage device, no one would be able to access your data unless they have a login password to your personal account. In the event of a natural disaster, all information stored in the cloud will remain safely stored off site and can easily be retrieved. THE NBN IS HERE! FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE NBN WHAT IS THE NBN?

The National Broadband Network is one of the largest infrastructure projects in Australia’s history. They’re building a brand new network that is set to make high speed broadband available to 100% of Australian homes and businesses. The landline phone network in use today was built over many decades. In contrast, installing the NBN across Australia is expected to take about 10 years, so although it’s a long-term project, it’s also a very fast-paced rollout. they’re planning to pass more than 6,000 homes and businesses every day in the peak of the rollout. By the end of 2015, more than 3.5 million homes and businesses across Australia are planned to have construction commenced or completed.

DO I NEED NEW EQUIPMENT TO USE THE NBN?

In some NBN fibre areas, NBN Co will provide a free standard installation of a connection box on your outside wall while the network is being built in your street, and an Network Termination Device inside your house once you order a service. This is the basic equipment you need to use services over the NBN. Most equipment used to access the internet or to make phone calls today can be used on the NBN fibre but you should check with us to confirm this.

WHAT’S IN IT FOR ME?

Yes, as long as you have an active phone service over NBN fibre and your Network Termination Device is powered up. Phone services in Australia are required by law to connect calls to emergency services free of charge. A battery backup unit is also available for premises in NBN fibre areas. It provides around 4-5 hours of talk time on a standard corded phone connected the Network Termination Device’s “UNI-V” port in the case of a power outage. If you want a phone service with NBN’s battery backup, you will need to discuss this with us when ordering your internet and voice service.

With the NBN, you’ll be able to access the benefits of super-fast internet, including: • Making high quality video calls to stay connected with family and friends • Accessing health services and interactive educational content online • Working from home like you would at the office • Getting the whole family online at once • Downloading movies in minutes and streaming TV online. Plus you’ll be able to make phone calls over the NBN’s fibre optic technology.

DO I NEED TO SWITCH TO THE NBN?

It’s your choice whether you switch to the NBN and whatservices you take up. However, in the areas where NBN fibre is being installed, it will replace almost all phone lines, ADSL internet, Telstra/Optus cable internet, and some Telstra Velocity fibre services, providing a new fibre optic network for residents to use. So, when the switch-off of the above lines is announced in your area, you need to switch over to the NBN if you want to keep a landline phone or internet service, or make alternative arrangements for your phone and internet. There are some exceptions – if your phone or internet is already provided over a fibre optic cable, or through a network provided by your building owner, these services may continue to be available. To confirm, please check with your service provider. Most customers with NBN fixed wireless will not be impacted by the copper cut off.
