In the lead up to the holidays, The Leader asked four Greenock Primary students what Christmas meant to them as they prepared to conclude a school year like no other. Thirteen year old Regan Marks said for her, Christmas is the celebration of Jesus’ birth, a day that “made things all better in the world.” “It means celebrating with family and celebrating the birth of Jesus,” she added. “We spend time with family and sometimes we go to a church service.” This year’s lead up to Christmas has been very different for Regan and her school friends. “We usually dress up for the pageant in Tanunda, but not this year which is a bit sad,” said Regan. Mary Johnson, aged 10, said her family didn’t celebrate the way others might. “We usually have a special lunch but we don’t have a Christmas tree and presents,” she said. “Christmas means like being with your family and making people happy.” Eight year old Jett Bunn knows exactly what the season is about his family. “We celebrate Christmas because Jesus was born and all that stuff. We put up a tree and get presents and eat chocolate!” And for six year old Darcy Boyle, it was a struggle to remember what happened last year, after all, he was only five. “Christmas means spending time with your family. I can’t really remember what we do, it’s been like a year since last time... Aunties, uncles and all my family come and visit and we have lunch together. “Usually it’s a barbecue and lots of bits and bobs!”

Christmas a feast of community, regeneration and light By Father Steven de Kleer, Barossa Anglican Church Hello: Christmas is a celebration for all the community. Let us hope that we are able to bring our communities together and celebrate by being generous and open handed, forgiving and loving not just to ourselves but to each other. Because “many have done it tough this year”, and need the familiar things of ritual, family and friends to support them, so that they can be carried into the new year and be hopeful. As Christians and as faith seekers and as people of good will we need to celebrate, decorate our homes and make a loud noise and say thank God because without Joy our hearts become heavy and our souls are depleted. Maintain Hope- find Joy. Christmas is about regeneration and renewal in between all of our celebrations
there is a chance for reflection - to let go of the hurts of the past, the struggles of the past – to hold ourselves gently for we are often our harshest critics. And in this gentleness and grace time we allow the new thing to come about and to birth itself in you. This is what God is doing in the Christ event, holding us gently and allowing the new to emerge challenging the old world view and proclaiming something new. This is incarnation. It was true years ago and it is still true and needed today. We need to be people of light that is, we need to recognise the Christ event as a birth of new consciousness that continues to come to us day by day. This new awareness if we let it- speaks to the very heart, soul, and mind of who and what we are as people and as community. Shalom- Merry Christmas. God Bless.

Entering Bev Crabb’s stylish two-storey home in Tanunda, you feel you could just as easily be walking into the set of a Christmas photo shoot for a popular magazine. Every corner is a feast of festive bedazzlement, tastefully curated by this former hairdresser with a sharp eye for style. “Anything that stands still, I’ll light up,” Bev laughs, her eyes twinkling as gleefully as the many tiny bulbs sprinkled throughout the room. Whether Bev is hosting Christmas for her three children and their families or not (incidentally this year Christmas will be at her son, Ben’s house in Adelaide), the house is nonetheless decked out from ceiling to floor, the table set and the tree draped in as many baubles as Bev can squeeze in. “Some years you can’t even see the tree is green!” she laughed. Bev’s love of decorating for Christmas has always been with her, from making things

You’ve got to be able to look at things and see what works.” Stringing baubles on fishing line is another clever trick that allows Bev to fill every available space on the tree, even when there may not be a branch left to hang from. And don’t think that everything she uses is expensive; she’s just as likely to pick up a trinket from Foodland or the post office as she is to shop in a fancy homewares store. “Some things that you buy can look cheap, but if you put it together well it can look like quality,” she said. It’s a quality that is certainly appreciated by everyone who visits her home, which often stays decorated well into January. “Everybody oohs and aahs because it is nice to see,” said Bev. “I just think, share the goodness.”

It’s all part of the fun of the season, which Bev wholeheartedly embraces, especially in 2020. “We’ve had enough negativity this year,” she said. “I always find something amusing to write about. I usually open it with, ‘this will probably be my last letter’, but then all my friends complain that I must keep doing it!” The talented decorator was happy to share some of her tips for creating an interior Christmas wonderland, which is sheer delight for her four grandchildren. “You can create little stories around the room,” she said.

Barossa houses shine for Christmas By Mel Jaunay With parades cancelled, events diminished and holiday travel restricted, there’s no doubt that 2020 will be a Christmas like no other. But there is one tradition that is still going ahead with plenty of enthusiasm around homes across the Barossa: Christmas light displays. Viewed from your own vehicle, there’s no need for masks, social distancing is a breeze, and best of all, there’s probably plenty to see right in your own neighbourhood. With many people taking to online community forums in search of the best displays to visit, Nuriootpa’s Laura and Travis Sargeant, together with Nathan Eyers and Jessica Thompson saw a need to create an informal page where that information could be accessed, with a separate thread for each Barossa township. The ‘Barossa Christmas Lights 2020’ Facebook group was born, and if the amount of houses already added to the list is anything to go by, this year Christmas in the Barossa is set to be dazzling. “It creates an atmosphere,” said Laura. “I think everyone started putting up their
lights earlier this year because of COVID; people were looking forward to Christmas. “It’s funny how lights bring happiness.” Twenty-three year old Hudson Schilling of Nuriootpa has been busy preparing his family home’s light display. Complete with illuminated nativity, Santa’s sleigh, and towering Christmas trees, the Kranz Street home has been a draw card for many Christmas light pilgrims over the years, with parents, Steve and Debbie even ensuring a power point was purpose-installed under the roof eve when they built the house. “Christmas Eve was mental last year,” laughed Hudson. “We got back from church and our street was like a car park.” Hudson is pleased to have taken over the role of head Christmas lighting designer in his household, saying it’s a joyful tradition that seems to get many people in the street involved. “As you get older you can lose the passion for Christmas a bit, so this helps to keep it going,” he said. “When you see kids walking across the lawn looking and smiling, it makes it worthwhile.”

2020 has been a memorable, though sometimes challenging year. Along with millions of other Australians I spent much of the year working from home, though only a very short drive from my home in Lyndoch there were cellar doors closed for months with staff having a very different experience than me. These extended to different states within Australia, and finally to Australia’s experience compared to other countries. I felt very safe and privileged to be living in regional South Australia, possibly one of the best places in the world to live through 2020. I also felt privileged to be in a position to help others through this period. Christmas Picnic at Coulthard House, Nuriootpa By Emma Clark The lawns of Coulthard House provided the perfect setting on Friday night for Nuriootpa Futures Association’s Christmas Picnic. NFA chairman, Mr Lyndon Stoll said it was an absolutely fabulous evening which was topped off by a magnificent sunset. “Having the Nuriootpa Town Band and the Bobby Dazzler Show was fantastic,” said Lyndon. “Overall, we thought it was very successful for a short notice, community programme. The feedback from people that were there was very positive and we are looking to do it again in the very near future.”

By Alicia Lüdi-Schutz A Nuriootpa family are embracing the Aussie culture and celebrating Christmas with an Asian twist. Kevin Liu grew up in Taiwan, a small island with a large population largely influenced by Chinese culture; whilst his wife, Sherlyn Chuo was born in a small town in Malaysia, a Commonwealth country with more of a British influence. Now Kevin is the marketing manager of his family’s wine business, Ubertas Wines and together with Sherlyn, they are raising their two little Aussie born girls, Earlena, aged 3½ and Ethelyn, aged 16 months. They enjoy what they describe as a much more peaceful festive season in Australia compared to their mother countries. “At home in Taiwan we tend to go out for dinner on Christmas Eve and after dinner go to the night markets, there’s music and celebrations - it’s a big night out,” said Kevin. “You get the next day off and
there is no Boxing Day so people have to go back to work, it’s a really short break. “But after New Year, you get Chinese New Year which is a really big event. That’s a nine day holiday in Taiwan...In China it’s 14! Kevin sharing Christmas Eve was usually spent with colleagues after a day’s work in Taiwan and with his masters in Marketing from the University of South Australia, he thought it was interesting how Western culture had also influenced the choice of restaurants and meals in Asian countries. “I remember they tend to have steak on Christmas Eve, that is very American. American restaurants did really well with their marketing! They used to say you need to get a proper steak on Christmas Eve so we did!” he laughed. “ Ja p a n o r d e r K F C f o r Christmas and we have steak!” S h e r l y n ’s m e m o r i e s o f Christmas in Malaysia are similar to Australia. “In my hometown there are
more Christians so we have really fancy Christmas pageants, one or two weeks earlier,” she said. She also remembers the busyness in the towns and cities at Christmas compared to her new homeland. “It’s very quiet on the streets here in Australia,” said Sherlyn of Christmas Day. “In Asian countries the shops are open and the ambiance and environment is very different. It’s very hectic and there are lots of decorations and events. It’s more relaxing here.” Both remember opening their Christmas presents on Christmas Eve and they continue that tradition in Australia too, with Father Christmas also playing a role in delivering the gifts found under the tree. “When the kids go to school, they’ll have friends who will share in what they do at Christmas so I tend to follow what the local culture is,” Sherlyn said. However, COVID-19 will make 2020’s celebrations a little different.
Usually Kevin’s father travels across from Taiwan three times a year including Christmas, meaning the entire family along with Kevin’s Barossa based winemaking brother, Philip and his family can be together. Yet despite this year’s challenge, it won’t stop roast pork with Asian flavours featuring on the family dinner table this Christmas Eve. “We usually have roast duck and tofu too, we eat a lot of tofu because that’s what we like,” said Kevin. There’s also a traditional Asian dessert they always love to make which is a popular dish served as part of Chinese New Year celebrations. “It’s called Tang Yuan... glutinous rice balls served in a sugary sweet syrup,” Kevin explained. “It symbolises the winter solstice,” added Sherlyn. As members of the Goodwood Methodist Church, the family are looking forward to attending a service on Christmas Day followed by lunch with parishioners.

Allan captures Christmas cheer
For nearly 10 years, Allan Griffin, of Nuriootpa has captured the colour and charm of the state’s largest pageant and this year, despite it being held at the Adelaide Oval, the National Pharmacies’ Christmas Pageant was just as fun. Allan, who runs his own photography business and is also a freelance photographer for The Leader, says photography saved him during a time when he faced depression and a divorce. He joined a camera club and resurrected the club, with a few others, and it now proudly boasts a membership of more than 50 photographers. It was by chance that a member of the camera club was to retire and Allan became part of the team to cover the annual event.
He was fortunate to have a handover with the former chief of photography and Allan hasn’t looked back at attending the Christmas pageant since. “The pageant is a real passion of mine... it’s fun, exciting and colourful,” said Allan. “I love it. There’s a great team of people that organise it and work all year to make it happen... this year though was completely different. “Even for myself, going into it, none of it was the same.” Despite a national pandemic forcing a relocation of the popular event, Allan was still able to capture the pageant, including a lot of backstage footage and all the new floats including some of the “larrikins”. “Behind the scenes was just epic this year,”
said Allan. “People were still in character and displaying cheer and joy and they were having a great time. This year, for me, was more about capturing the behind the scenes.” Taking some time to go through and process the 6,000 photos from the November event, Allan said the 2020 event was historical as the pageant was first created during the Great Depression in 1933. “We are in a similar position to the Great Depression,” said Allan. “COVID-19 shut down the world and the pageant continues to bring delight to the children of South Australia and aboard. “It’s about capturing the moment in time through photography, which is what X Mark Photography is all about.”

Pastor Adrian Kitson, St Petri Lutheran Church A few locals have said to me that “If there was ever a year we needed Christmas, this is the year!” I get what they mean. I feel that same way. It has been a hard year. The roller coaster ride of worry and then relief, lockdown then release, bad news from the USA, bad news from China, economic struggle here at home and that faint veiled throbbing threat of sickness or worse, have added up to a need to find some new joy. Because we have known the suffering, we might be more ready to receive the joy? So, where is the joy to be found as COVID 2020 sets? I guess there will be some joy in the relatively unrestricted Christmas present shopping and giving, the Christmas lunch or dinner and a sweet reunion of family and
friends that might be possible across state borders after all. For me there is a deeper joy that is wider than even a nasty world-beating virus. It is a gift given to me when I can’t make it happen or pay for it. It is in that shed in that feeding trough with those workers, star gazers and sheep. That Baby Joy will know the suffering and the pain of all of us and will take it from us and give us a new joy beyond ourselves. That Baby Joy is Jesus of Nazareth; born, dead and raised to be pure joy for all the sinners and the saints, the winners and losers, the grievers and the gainers. He is joy at this year’s end. If there was ever a year that we need Christmas, this is the year. Yep. If there was ever a time to listen to “Baby Joy” and know his deep joy in you, this might be it. Merry Christmas!

Ryan enjoys a relaxed, Aussie Christmas By Ella Pryor
Tanunda’s Ryan Remillard may be Canadian, but he loves the relaxed lifestyle of an Australian Christmas. JS0547-V4
If you ask anyone what Christmas is like overseas the answer will generally always consist of one or more of the following: cold, snowing, sitting near the fire and a hot roast. And for Tanunda’s Ryan Remillard, who is originally from Vancouver, Canada, that’s exactly how he grew up. “The main difference between Australian and Canadian Christmas for me has always been the weather and the climate,” he said. “We all watch the Christmas movies with the snow, reindeers and evergreen trees... and that’s Christmas in Canada. “We had a simple roast turkey with corn, mashed potato, stuffing and carrots.” Ryan’s wife, Sara, who grew up in Greenock, moved to Canada with him in 2008. The pair moved back to Adelaide in 2014 and the Barossa in 2017. Yet Ryan still can’t wrap his head around a 40 degree Christmas Day with a barbecue by the pool or at the beach. “The first time I did a big family Christmas with Sara’s family the table was bowing in the middle! There was ham, turkey, prawns, bread.... it was insane,” laughed Ryan. “I’m all about the stuffing, that’s my jam.” But what he does really appreciate is what he describes as a ‘slower paced
lifestyle’ at this time of year, full of time with family and public holidays. “I feel like Christmas is more of an occasion here. The shut down period isn’t a thing that occurs in Canada,” said Ryan. “As an electrician back home we’d finish up on Christmas Eve and be back at work on December 27. You’d take the public holidays off and be back to working... but here people are like, oh we might take a month off.” As well as being a bit more relaxed, Ryan would also describe an Australian Christmas as more traditional, family orientated and religious. Whereas in Canada, Christmas has now become ‘more commercial’. Ryan believes that this year’s Christmas in Australia will be an opportunity to stop and catch their breath, have family time, as well as reassess and reflect on the past few months. But it doesn’t come without missing his family back home in Canada. “Hopefully 2021 allows us to visit our family in Canada. By the time I see my parents it’d be two or three years apart,” he said. “I’ve never felt far away from my family over in Canada. Even though they’re 12,000 kilometres away I could typically get on a plane and be back within a couple days... So feeling that distance between them this year has been really challenging.”

Nuriootpa Scouts help others Members of the First Nuriootpa Scout Group recently made a donation of toiletry items to go towards Lutheran Community Care’s Christmas hampers. The Cubs, with assistance from the Joeys, collected shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, toothbrushes, tissues, soap and more for the appeal. Mr Luke Matthews, Cub Scout Leader, said the group wanted to do something for those
less fortunate or disadvantaged. “It was their idea,” said Luke. “We put a call out to families for anything they had lying around or $10. We then had a game’s night where the group packed and sorted the items into bags themselves.” Cub, Amber Matthews added, “Everything always starts with one idea and turns into a big community.”

Nuriootpa Community Children’s Centre help with Christmas hampers Each year Nuriootpa Community Children’s Centre help with Chirstmas hampers and are involved in decorating boxes and bags for the Lutheran Community Care annual Christmas hampers. The children are very keen to be involved in this by painting and decorating - some did drawings and others did painting (brush painting and roller painting). When the children were involved in this experience the Centre held discussions about helping others in the community and helping families and other children if they need help. Ms Catherine Hill, Centre Acting Director said the Centre looks forward to being involved in this each year - as with other community groups. “It is a great opportunity to make positive connections within our community. “These experiences contribute to the children developing feelings of belonging
to our centre and groups within the wider community. “It gives children the opportunity to broaden their understanding of different ways of contributing through play and projects, build on their own social experiences and participate in reciprocal relationships.”

Someone once gave me a special bottle of red wine, the best by reputation I’ve ever had in my collection. I liked having it. Choosing a bottle, I would see it and think “Is this the time to open it?” I’d hold off, sure an even better occasion was coming. That bottle was a gift that kept giving. I often saw it in my wine rack and felt grateful. Just owning the bottle was special and had a lot of meaning to me – reminding me how much the giver cared for me. Sadly, I didn’t open that bottle until too late – the wine was passed its best. Often Christians talk about “the real meaning of Christmas”. U n i n t e n t i o n a l l y, inferring there is something “not real” about the meaning that others experience. This isn’t the case. There is real meaning
in taking a break, real meaning in sharing time with family and friends, real meaning in giving generously, real meaning in celebrating, relaxing, connecting with people, disconnecting from work, pressing the reset button in our lives. These things are so meaningful that we should do them more. When I think about the “real” meaning of Christmas, I realise that if I opened that bottle of wine earlier, I would have fully experienced the joy that the giver intended for me. The full experience and joy of Christmas comes from knowing that the creator’s love for the creation (us) is so great that God came to live like us in the form of Jesus – motivated by a desire to do whatever it would take for us to fully experience peace, joy, hope and love – then and always. Our hope is that you too, can have your bottle and drink it, enjoying the trimmings of Christmas, and the full meaning of it. Merry Christmas!

Reflecting on Christmas
By Father Mark Sexton Last year, I had the privilege of visiting the Holy Land for a six week sabbatical. As part of that, I had the wonderful experience of celebrating Mass in the Grotto believed to be the site of Jesus’ birth. As you might imagine, as Christmas approaches, that is a treasured memory. It also leads me to reflect on when we might again be able to travel so freely. I have often seen or heard the word “unprecedented” used to describe what we have gone through in 2020. It is not really an accurate description. Yes, for us in Australia, the uncertainty about employment, finances, access to health care and other facilities , is unprecedented. Yet for most of the world and its population, such uncertainty is the norm. Donald Horne referred to Australia as “the lucky country”. He did not mean it as a compliment. I would rather say that Australia is a “blessed country”. In a way, all that has happened this year can be viewed as an opportunity. It gives us, if we choose to do so, the opportunity to reflect on the uncertainties that most of the world has to live with and through. We can reflect on why this is so and why it does not have to be so. It is human decisions which have condemned so many to such uncertainty. It can be human decisions which lead them out – if we choose to. Joseph and his family acted on a dream, a dream which many of us believe led to God breaking into the world. We can also, as a society, act on a dream, a dream which enables us to see all other people as fellow children of God deserving of respect and care, not objects to be exploited. Are we brave enough to take this opportunity to reflect? DH0759-V12

It is interesting to note that a big part of today’s Christmas giving traditions was also birthed out of an epidemic, not unlike current times. St Nicholas (the original Santa Claus), lost his parents to an epidemic and while others were struggling, he used his own inheritance to give to those in need. The story and life of St Nicholas became the basis for the jolly gift giver that we all know and love today. So this Christmas, let’s choose to be givers: following God’s example and that of jolly old Saint Nic, motivated by love and generosity, not holding back things that are precious to us, but joyfully sharing what we have. Gift giving! There’s just something exciting about opening a present, getting something fresh and new that’s been thoughtfully selected by the ones you love. There’s no doubt that we, as humans, love to receive gifts, especially good ones! This year has not quite been the gift that we’d hoped for, with much fear and uncertainty surrounding it. It’s been easy to look inward and go into survival mode, keeping things for ourselves and holding tight the precious resources that we have in order to make it through. Volunteers and associates of the Great Revival Shop in Tanunda were relieved to sneak their Christmas lunch in between everevolving COVID restrictions on November 27 at Tanunda Hotel. About twenty-six of the shop’s 34 volunteers attended lunch, capping off a year to remember for the secondhand shop, which has been operating for nearly three decades. A 10 week closure during S.A.’s first COVID-19 wave was followed by a boost in generous donations, and record-breaking takings in October. Funds raised are channelled back into local charitable causes. Shop manager, Pauline Lindner said it was wonderful to have so many of the volunteers catch up in one place. “We all get along so well,” she said. “And we’re always looking for new people to join our group.”

Aussie Christmas at Kapunda Bowling Club By Ella Pryor Flannelette shirts, festive earrings and gumnut leaves made for a great ‘Australian Christmas’ event at Kapunda Bowling Club last Monday. Thirty-six players from local clubs, as well as Renmark and Semaphore, came together for a few games of bowls and delicious lunch, followed by Christmas pudding of course. Kapunda Bowling Club’s Judy Earl said it was a ‘wonderful, fun loving day’. “It was fabulous, and an amazing sight to see everyone so dressed up,” she said.

By Alicia Lüdi-Schutz From making giant toys for primary school students, to restoring garden benches for the elderly, volunteers at the Kapunda Shed have been keeping busy in the lead up to the festive season. The group were cutting out and sanding a wooden nativity scene for Kapunda Uniting Church last month, ready to be painted in time for Christmas. They had also just installed a freshly painted park bench in the gardens of the Kapunda Homes next door to the hospital and were starting work on another one. Shed co-ordinator, Mr Paul Ferry said they were giving the benches a “tidy up”. “We completely strip it, put the timber through the planer, get it nice and then give it a proper undercoat and a proper top coat and paint all the iron....that’s what we’ve got to do,” Paul said. Giant dominoes and dice and even a monster sized Connect Four are just some of the many interesting projects the group has finished during the past few months. President, Andrew Argent said the team of more than 40 members happily contributed to a range of different community projects as it not only kept things interesting, but also made a difference in people’s lives, both inside and beyond the shed. “It’s community spirit, that’s what the Kapunda Shed is all about,” Andrew said.

Christmas Greetings from St. Jakobi Lutheran School There has been no restriction on Christmas spirit at St Jakobi Lutheran School, Lyndoch. Almost 40 students from Years 2 to 6 have formed the Candy Cane Choir. The Candy Cane Choir usually tours to local nursing homes to spread the joy of the season. However, this year they are making videos of their singing to send to the elderly residents. Their repertoire includes ‘Go, Tell It On The Mountain’, ‘The Magi’, ‘Unto Us’ and ‘Deck The Sheds With Bits of Wattle’. And yes, St Jakobi’s Candy Cane Choir sound just as delightful as they look! St. Jakobi’s Foundation students have also been doing Christmas crafts.

A petit Barossa Noël
By Mel Jaunay Some of Éva d’Alboy’s favourite memories of Christmas during her childhood in France are decorating the tree with her mother, and setting the table for the sumptuous Christmas Eve, or Le Reveillon de Noël, meal. “We had to wear our most beautiful clothes and shoes and be impeccably presented, even as children,” said Éva, who grew up with her siblings, Laetitia, Jerémie and Vincent and parents, Heléne and Élie in the village of Savigny-le-Temple, about 40 kilometres south east of Paris. The vivacious 36 year old relief teacher from Gomersal has lived in Australia for 13 years, but is still getting used to the fact she is able to fire up a barbecue and don a summery dress at Christmas. “I actually enjoy being able to be outdoors over Christmas. In France it is dreary at this time of the year,” she said.
Other than the distinct difference in weather, Éva says Christmas in France is not too different from Australia, with both cultures gathering together for family celebration and engaging in gift giving. Children in France are encouraged to write a letter to ‘Père Noël’ or Father Christmas, telling him how well behaved they have been during year. “If they have been naughty, they need to convince Père Noël that they will be improving their behaviour the following year,” laughed Éva. “We generally open our presents on the morning of Christmas Day. “Each family member puts one of their favourite shoes under the Christmas tree so Père Noël knows where to put the gifts. “This tradition is very important, and we have to make sure the shoes are clean and shiny!”
As one of the gastronomic capitals of the world, Christmas fare is naturally very important in France, with the meal on Christmas Eve being the most significant of the season. “Generally French people open some carefully cellared wines that they have been keeping for the occasion. We also like to drink mulled wine and mulled cider,” explained Éva, who is well familiar with a good drop, being part of the Production Team at Hentley Farm in addition to her teaching hours. “We love to start the meal with smoked salmon and Caviar. Foie Gras, or fatty liver, is also very traditional but presents some controversy as it can be classified as animal cruelty because the geese are force-fed.” Just as in Australia, seafood is quite popular, with stuffed turkey usually served as main course. But it is the traditional dessert Bûche
de Noël, a log made of ice cream or rolled sponge cake filled with cream, that is the real showstopper. “Some can be very intricate and beautifully decorated. Generally it aims to impress your guests!” said Éva. In a year where COVID-19 has interrupted international travel and prevented Éva from visiting her homeland, the importance of connecting with family is of particular significance this Christmas. “This year has been awful for a lot of people and we more than ever need to have a great Christmas,” she said. “It has been difficult to deal with the restrictions and knowing that if something happens to my family, the travel restrictions will make it very complicated to manage. “I am just happy they are safe. Hopefully, I will be able to visit soon.” This year, a Skype call to her family on Le Reveillon de Noël followed by some of Éva’s favourite Aussie traditions will help to kindle her Christmas spirit. “I love the warm weather, the long days, the bon-bons (as I had never seen them before), the festivities, and people’s enthusiasm!”

Pink Lady apple, brie, jamon and witlof wraps INGREDIENTS:

(Serves 4 as a snack) 1 witlof or baby Cos lettuce heart 1 Pink Lady™ apple, quartered, cored and sliced 200 g Brie, sliced 100 g Jamón or Prosciutto, thinly sliced 1 tsp lemon thyme leaves freshly cracked black pepper
METHOD: My favourite go-to snack with drinks or on a picnic are these Pink Lady apple, Lay a piece of Brie and 2 slices of Pink brie and jamon wraps. There’s nothing more to do than to simply slice, stack Lady on top of a witlof leaf. and serve. Sophie’s top tips for the festive season “Christmas is the busiest time of the year and with that comes the stressfulness of trying to fit food preparation in. For me, the less is more and plan ahead approach makes the task much easier,” said Sophie. She recommends to stock up on a few good quality products to use in different ways. • Plan ahead. By writing up a meal plan, shopping and freezing ahead of Christmas and the days after will reduce the cost, stress and waste of last-minute preparation.
• Almonds or other nuts fried in a little olive oil and tossed with salt flakes, cumin seed and chilli flakes make a great snack. • Condiments. Stock up on a range of mustards, chutneys, flavoured oils/salts and dressings which can cheer up even the saddest looking turkey breast or piece of ham. • Cheeses are one of the most versatile proteins for morning, noon or night. • Adding any smoked food on the table adds to the festive mood.

Sophie offers inspiration in the kitchen By Ella Pryor This year you might have noticed a new addition to The Leader - a weekly recipe by chef and food writer, Sophie Zalokar. But who is the woman behind the delicious creations? At the start of the year Sophie, who actually grew up in Nuriootpa in the 70’s and 80’s, set out on a ‘sabbatical year of travel’ around Australia on her BMW 1200 GS motorcycle. She had left her home in Western Australia to adventure across the Nullabor through to South Australia and then on to Sydney when the serious rumbles of COVID-19 began back in March. When she arrived at Wilson’s Promontory National Park, Victoria at the end of March, the border closure announcements began. Friends in the Barossa had rung, offering their B&B as somewhere to safely land while considering the situation. But with such unknown circumstances, Sophie decided to lease a cottage in Angaston and make the Barossa her base - thus reducing her travels to within the state. Being familiar with her local newspaper, The Leader, and having already had recipes published before, Sophie thought submitting recipes could offer a creative distraction during a difficult time. “The recipes came about as a way of offering some inspiration in the kitchen for locals. It’s the place everyone returned to during isolation,” said Sophie. “We’re all creatures of habit to a certain extent but we get three opportunities a day to be a bit more creative with our meals. “It helps to make this happen if you don’t have to look too far for inspiration. The local paper seemed the best way to share some favourite recipes that had previously proven popular.” Sophie’s approach when creating a new recipe is thinking practically for those that are time poor, using basic equipment, prefer healthier food or have allergies and dietary restrictions. Along with this she tries to include interesting flavours or textures that have a freshness and align with the seasons and local fresh produce. “It’s all a big creative jigsaw puzzle of sorts, which I very much enjoy,” she said. Sophie is definitely well-equipped in the chef/food writer field. When she was younger she completed a cooking apprenticeship with Maggie Beer at the Pheasant Farm Restaurant. Aside from an extraordinary education in understanding flavour and food provenance, Maggie provided her a window to the world beyond the Barossa. Sophie left the Barossa region in 1989 to work overseas for 18 months, before settling in Perth. Here she continued to work as a chef and started food writing for a WA magazine and The West Australian; submitting a recipe every week that lasted for 13 years.

In 2005 Sophie moved with her family to a property with holiday cottages in Pemberton, a small town in the South West of WA. Over the course of 14 years, they created a unique culinary tourism business, Foragers. Sophie’s second book, Food of the Southern Forests was then published in 2014. And despite being extremely well-travelled and having a large, successful career, Sophie has been happy to be back to her roots and contributing to The Leader this year. “It’s been really lovely to be included in what’s still the go-to weekly roundup of local news. So much has changed in the Barossa since I left but the elements of a very tightknit community have remained,” she said. “Despite being significantly curtailed and feeling a bit like a foreigner in a familiar place, I’ve enjoyed my time here. Much smaller adventures than I’d planned but nonetheless I have made this year full of new experiences I’d not have had without COVID.” In the new year, COVID permitting, Sophie hopes to leave the Barossa to resume her wider motorcycle travels in April. She describes the future as ‘an open book’ at the moment. “If anything, I think COVID has been a brake-pedal to allow for a kind of necessary pause to work out what’s really important individually, as a community and the value of our diminishing precious natural environment,” said Sophie. “It’s not been without sacrifice and it’s been particularly tough on small businesses and the loss of those special family gathering moments. “I hope though this means we’ll be better able to adapt to whatever comes our way in the future.”

Vanesa, Juliette, Kirk and Sebastian Lambert with Pam and Jim Lambert. “We moved to Australia because we fell in love with the country and this amazing place and we just want to teach our children some of our traditions. “Traditions are so important and if we were to forget where we came from, you are almost left with nothing.” Vanesa admits she doesn’t know too many of the Australian traditions and adds, “But we try to adapt and be part of the place we live and call home. “Hopefully as the kids get older they can teach us some of the Australian traditions they learn.” Vanesa said this year is just as important as ever to be able to celebrate with family. “We try and include other people who don’t have family, Christmas orphans, and there’s only so much turkey that the six of us can eat,” said Vanesa with a laugh. And with Sebastian and Juliette having a greater understanding of the festive season, Vanesa said it makes it even more special. “With the kids it makes it much more exciting,” said Vanesa. “I love the joy in their eyes when they see the decorations - the tree and Santa.”

Christmas combines two cultures for the Lambert family in Angaston. Winemakers, Kirk and Vanesa Lambert bring American and Peruvian to their family home and do their best to continue the childhood traditions in their home with children, Sebastian, aged four and Juliette, aged two. Family is important to them and with Kirk’s parents, Jim and Pam living close by, the Christmas holidays have become a chance for Vanesa to host her family in the Barossa or for overseas travel. However, a national pandemic has sidelined any plans that had started around the 2020 festivities but that won’t deter Kirk and Vanesa from continuing their culture at home. “We try to all be together,” said Vanesa. “Last year we were all on a cruise for Christmas and we had my parents and sister with us and we stayed on for a bit longer in the US and saw all of Kirk’s family. “Lucky we did that because of what has happened since.” Growing up as a child, Vanesa would celebrate Christmas on December 24 with a very European wintery meal as close to midnight as possible. During the meal, Santa would have visited, allowing the children to open their gifts under the tree, before going to bed. Vanesa likens the night to New Year’s Eve and said there are usually fireworks in the towns. With a small family, Vanesa enjoys the chance to be able to spend December 24 with immediate family over three generations and enjoy the turkey, ham or pork, salads and rice. “It is a very European meal despite it still being summer,” said Vanesa. Vanesa’s face lights up as she recollects the panettone they enjoy for dessert, coupled with hot chocolate. “My mother makes the ultimate, best hot chocolate in the whole wide world,” said Vanesa. “It is the only time of year when we eat panettone.” For Vanesa, who has been in Australia now for 12 years, these are all traditions she continues in her Angaston home. “As the children get older we will try and get as close to midnight as possible but we have incorporated the American side and open our Christmas gifts on the 25th,” said Vanesa. “We go to Jim and Pam’s house and have brekky, or come in a bit later... for us in Peru the 25th is a day for recovery after the big late meal. “We try, for the kids particularly, to include as many of the holidays as we can, even if it’s not our own. We celebrate Thanksgiving which brings everyone together.” The Lamberts’ Thanksgiving has its own twist to it, where they combine the North and the South and offer a Mexican fiesta. “I am thankful to be able to be together and for everyone to say what they are thankful for,” said Vanesa.
