Football Our Cover Barossa District’s talented twin brothers, Paul and Matt Stelzer are seeking their fourth A-Grade Premiership flag this season with the Bulldogs. Willaston Division 1 netballer, Jess Wilson, shared the Association’s Best & Fairest title last season and is hoping for her third medal with the Donnybrook girls.
LEFT: Barossa District are looking for Back to Back Premierships in an effort to repeat their last double in 2006/07. Coach Roger James enters his fourth year at the helm with an experienced side. Last year, Barossa pulled the upset of the season, shattering Tanunda’s hopes of winning five consecutive flags.
2013 BL&GFA Season – GAME ON! By Patrick Reincke
With the 2013 BL&GFA football season
starting this week, all teams are pushing for their squads to be in flying form as they approach the crucial first round.
All nine teams have improved during this pre-season which will only make the battle for finals spots all the more thrilling. On paper it looks as if all teams are capable of contesting the finals. However, the true test of how far these teams have really come this pre-season will be when that ball is bounced at the start of round one.
All the hard work, all the time spent training will be showcased in coming weeks. The questions will be asked. Can Barossa go back-to-back? Will Tanunda still be a contender? Or will we see a new face in the finals come September? Undoubtedly, the 2013 BL&GFA season is set to be one of the most thrilling and exciting seasons yet. Game on!

President’s Message Welcome to all sponsors, volunteers, officials and players to the start of the 2013 Barossa Light and Gawler Football Assn. football season. This year promises to again be a fantastic season in our senior grade with my early prediction being a back to back year for the Barossa Bulldogs. It is extremely disappointing that clubs are needing to pay such enormous amounts to recruit players of limited ability and credentials in some cases and something needs to be done to stop this massive impost on clubs before we start seeing clubs go out of existence. I am not sure what the answer is to stop this problem but I believe it needs to be a concerted effort from the SANFL and Community Football to stop this madness and go back to players wanting to play for the jumper and not financial gain. The Board of Directors is pleased to announce that Carl Whitaker will again be the BLGFA Umpires’ Coach in 2013. Carl is in charge of the best country umpires panel in community football and we are indeed fortunate to have such a dedicated group of umpires that take the field each week. What a credit to our umpires’ panel that we are able to cover all grades from Under 9’s through to our A-Grade level each week by independent umpires all appointed by our senior and junior coaches. In charge of our junior umpires this year is Sarah Jameson and I am sure Sarah will do a great job as she passes on her great knowledge of umpiring to our up and coming men in white. I appeal to all players and supporters of football in the BL&G to respect the umpires as they go about their thankless task every Saturday. This year the BLGFA will compete in the SA Country Championship as part of the Eastern Zone at Port Pirie on July 6-7. The Eastern Zone’s performance at last year’s championships was disappointing and with the appointment of former CDFC under age, Angaston and Willaston coach, Mark “Ollie” Seelander as coach of the side in 2013 a far more positive outcome is expected at this year’s championships. I would encourage all players to make themselves available for selection in the team as it is an opportunity to play against the best players from across all country leagues and associations.
It is particularly pleasing to see so many BL&G players representing Central District in all grades at SANFL level in 2013 and it demonstrates that the BL&G’s junior programme is going from strength to strength. Congratulations to Jack Hannath (Angaston/Fremantle) and Sam Colquhoun (Angaston/Port Power) on being drafted into the AFL this year. Paul Healy has been appointed CoCoordinator Junior Development and brings with him a wealth of experience in football and I am sure his appointment will further progress the BLGFA commitment to developing our future champions. The issue of drugs in sport has been a headline in 2013 and while it would be unwise to say the BLGFA is not effected by players’ use of performance enhancing and recreational drugs, the Board of Directors is confident it would only effect a very small percentage of players in our Association. Any player found to be using any form of drugs will be dealt with swiftly and have severe penalties imposed on them. I extend the Board’s thanks to the countless volunteers that give many hours of their free time each year to ensure that their clubs continue to grow and prosper. Good luck to all football and netball teams for season 2013. Nobby Symes, President, BL&G Football Association

President’s Message A NEW DIRECTION FOR BLGNA As we welcome the start of the 2013 netball season, we introduce a new era for the BLGNA in terms of its management, priorities
and partnerships. At the end of last year we passed a new constitution. Our new constitution reflects many hours of consultation with all clubs and we thank their committees for becoming engaged in this process. The constitution has laid the foundation for a new Board of Directors which enabled for the first time representation from all nine clubs. In addition, we introduced the new roles of Director of Umpiring, Director of Junior Development and an Umpiring Panel – roles that represent a significant departure from previous operations. We welcome Lee-Anne Cummins in the role of Director of Umpiring and together with Leanne Chenoweth, Anne-Marie Coombs and Tricia Helbig we have an Umpiring Panel represented by our top umpires. The Umpiring Panel will take on the responsibility of dealing with all issues relating to umpiring, including umpire development and mentoring, dispute resolution and selection of umpires for Country Championships and finals. An umpire’s uniform is being developed by the Umpiring Panel and with the support of sponsorship, we are hoping to roll out this new uniform in stages this year. A strategic review of our operations has also identified a need for us to provide a greater commitment to raising the profile of netball within our region and creating solid relationships with local businesses who share our
values of community, family and living active healthy lifestyles. In addition, a commitment to supporting our umpires and developing pathways for our members to reach their full sporting potential is needed. It is with great pleasure that we welcome Tom Zorich and the Zorich Group as major sponsors of the BLGNA this year. The Zorich Group Pre-Season Cup carnival was held last Sunday and it showcased our high standard of talent and we introduced our major sponsor to our members and supporters on the day. As to the season on our doorstep, we expect it to be a very competitive season. Most clubs have fielded a full complement of senior and junior teams. We are fortunate to have an increasing number of juniors wanting to play within our Association this year. This has presented a challenge with some clubs having an abundance of players and others struggling to fill some age groups. H o w e v e r, o u r J u n i o r D e v e l o p m e n t Committee will continue to review junior numbers and make recommendations to our Board to enable us to assist clubs with these challenges. We are again looking forward to fielding strong teams at the Country Championship carnival held on the June long weekend. With the assistance of our sponsor partners, our dedicated sub-committee is working hard to encourage our top senior and junior players, coaches and umpires to participate. This event is a great stage to showcase our talent and the strength of our Association and we always have the best umpires at the carnival.
To everyone involved in netball and football this season, good luck and enjoy the season. Bridey Lewis, President

2012 reigning premiers, Willaston have won the Barossa, Light and Gawler Netball Association’s preseason Zorich Group Cup held at Kapunda on Sunday. The side, under the guidance of new coach, Phil Hendy beat Gawler Central by five goals in the grand final. The day was a chance for teams to test their preseason preparation in readiness for round one this Saturday. According to association president, Bridey Lewis the day went well. “Kapunda Netball Club were great hosts and put a tremendous effort in over the off-season to get their new courts completed for the season,” said Bridey. “Many teams used a mixture of senior players and under 17s which highlighted the depth of talent we have in our association. “We hope a number of the players approached
on Sunday will stand up and play in our Country Championships sides this year.” With interesting results from the day, Bridey said Barossa put in a good effort to finish fourth overall. “Expect them to keep improving this year,” said Bridey.

Soccer GAME LEFT: Willaston’s Bronwyn Heap and Lisa Wilson embrace after winning last year’s Grand Final. The side has regrouped over the pre-season, Heap is out with a knee injury and the side has a new coach at the helm. Despite the changes, the pressure is on for the club to make it four premierships in a row.

Gearing up for soccer season Soccer players from across the region are pulling on their boots for the start of the season. T h e B a r o s s a U n i t e d Ju n i o r S o c c e r Club from the Elizabeth and Districts Ju n i o r S o c c e r A s s o c i a t i o n h av e b e e n going well, despite hot weather in the pre-season. Merchandise manager, Mrs Margaret King said a hot weather policy had prevented them from training in 32 degree-plus weather, but players were bonding well and looking forward to a big year. The club – ranging from Under 6 to U16 and Colts – had 120 players in 2012 and they are hoping to see improvement this season. Mrs King said last year was a mixed bag, with some teams hardly winning any games and others not scoring until half way through the season. The club has lost some players to federation soccer, which is common amongst the 10-13 year old age group. “As a club, we are thrilled that our players meet the very high Federation standard, but
at the same time we are disappointed to lose players of that calibre,” Mrs King said. The club’s first game was held on April 6, with volunteers out in full force. They rely on volunteers for the canteen, barbecue, team managers, ground marshals and first aid. The Barossa United Tigers are also gearing up for a big season and have been training for a couple of months. Club President, Alexander Worrall said vintage had stolen some of the players away, but they’re all training together now. “We currently have 16 platers, which is an excellent start for this season as we only have one team,” Alexander said. Greenock Town Soccer Club folded this year, which has meant players have come together in one club. The club has players as young as 17, up to team members in their 30s. “We are a casual team who play for fun and love playing soccer.”

It is the start of a new era for the Barossa Valley Hockey Association with major upgrades commencing this season. Stockwell Recreation Park will have a new kitchen, change room and bathroom facilities by June, adding to the hype of the new artificial pitch, which will be ready for next season. The pitch will bring the association in-line with national standards and BVHA are working hard with juniors to ensure future interest in the sport. All clubs are running Hookin2Hockey programmes at local schools and have solid junior numbers this season. Reigning champions, Nuriootpa Men’s A Grade will be chasing an 11th straight premiership, however Tanunda will be seeking redemption after last year’s grand final loss. With six A Grade men’s teams this season, BVHA publicity officer, Marty Gallasch has flagged Angaston Moculta United (AMU) and Playford Wells as dark horses. Playford Wells has indicated they are looking to recruit younger players through their B Grade and will be expecting a tough season. “You can be assured there will be a new gun recruit donning the red and white this year as Wells search for the right blend of youth and experience to propel this never to be underestimated side back into finals contention,” Marty said. Nuriootpa have strengthened their side with two new recruits, Naracoorte’s Tom Carr and Berri’s Adam Pietsch, however have lost premiership player, Graham Walker. Tanunda are welcoming back Tim Dolan to mid-field after a year of travel, while AMU have remained tight-lipped about their season’s preparation. It is understood AMU have several key players competing in Adelaide this season, but equally as many possible recruits. It is undecided whether Trinity and Gawler A Grade will combine this season, however Trinity are expected to be in good stead, with several players recruited last year. In A Grade Women, Marty said powerhouses AMU are clear favourites, but coaching changes at Nuriootpa and improvement at Tanunda, Playford Wells and Trinity may challenge them this season. “New coach, Bek Moroney declared all positions vacant at the first practise, so the make up of the Nuriootpa side will be a mystery until the first round,” Marty said. Tanunda A Grade Women have lost champion mid-fielder, Laura Germain, however the return of striker, Ali Murch will add power in front of goals. grand finalists, Marty is expecting last year’s Gawler to be strong again and Trinity to have improved on last season’s solid performance. on May 4, with The season will get underway early rounds played at Gawler, Trinity College and Moculta Park, while Stockwell upgrades are completed. The annual Wal Lehmann Cup between BVHA and the Riverland teams will be played at Berri on April 21.

The Barossa Rams will enter a new era in season 2013 with the Club entering the Premier League for the first time in their short history. Moving into the highest grade in the state will be a challenge for the senior players, coaching staff and volunteers of the Club, but a challenge eagerly taken on. With a Senior team entered in both Division 1 and Division 1 Reserve and the Junior ranks grown to include mixed boy’s and girl’s Under 8’s through to Under 12’s and a boys Under 14’s, the Club is going from strength to strength. With the Barossa Rams now playing in the Premier Divisions, the club will have a full programme of games throughout the day, commencing from 9a.m. when playing home games at Lyndoch Oval. This year is also the first time in Australian Rugby history an Under 18’s girl’s team will be entered into a new competition to allow girls to continue with their rugby. The Barossa ‘Ewes’ is comprised of high school aged girls from the district, and with Women’s Rugby 7’s to be in the next Olympic games, these girls in a few years to come, will be the perfect age and skill level to push for future Olympic selection. Rugby has positions for all body shapes and types – from those too short for netball or basketball but can duck and weave; to the stronger but less agile of those who can make up the driving forwards with strength and control. The girl’s first game will be on Sunday, April 21 at Burnside Rugby Club from 11a.m. – 1p.m. Pre-season training began mid-January in preparation for the coming season, and despite the loss of a few senior players, the Rams have gained a large number of new players; young and old, experienced and new to the game. The Barossa Rams are now looking more like the “United Nations of Rugby” with players from many different countries including: Australia, Japan, Spain and the usual Scotland, England, Fiji, New Zealand and many more rugby nations. The Rams are always looking to pick up more players of any skill level and abilities during the season to help swell the ranks. Once again the Barossa Rams will be looking for a solid performance from Simon Chapple, Charlie O’Grady, Matt Muchamore and Pete Muchamore during the season. With the Rams moving up two Divisions this year they expect the games to be more challenging, but with some new skilled players and the skilled
