The new season awaits PATRICK PATRICK REINCKE REINCKE
Barossa District are looking for a hatrick of premierships after taking out last years Grand Final. A number of losses within the team will make it a challenge to defend their title.
It’s going to be hard to top last year’s BL&GFA season. It was the season where Barossa District recorded back-to-back premierships, the season Gawler Central soared from the bottom of the ladder to the top, Angaston and Freeling displayed strong signs of development, South Gawler and Tanunda held strong in the top four, Kapunda emerged as title contenders but fell agonisingly short and Nuriootpa and Willaston hovered mid-table. Along with remarkable upsets, incomparable thrashings, edge-of-yourseat nailbiters and so
much more, last season will not be forgotten. But on the horizon, waits the new season. A new opportunity; for redemption, for glory, for immortality. Teams will take to the ground as warriors to battle, face to face, as the hunger and the determination pushes players to fight, to run, tackle, defend, attack and score. As the new season dawns, new stars will rise, new teams will captivate, new coaches will command, new challenges will emerge and new battles will be fought in the name of glory, in the name of honour, in the name of football. It’s the game we love, the game we watch and the game we live for. Get ready for every challenge, every Saturday, every minute, every second of every game as all teams strive for premiership admiration, premiership brilliance and premiership glory.
Last year was a double victory for the Barossa District Football Club as the Reserves also secured a win, after extra time, against Gawler Central. They also will be looking to match their efforts in the 2014 season.

Angaston’s prepared Panthers
The Angaston Panthers are looking likely to cause trouble this season with some versatile players joining the club, boosting the side’s chances of ascending the ladder. Brett Woodards and Matt Blenkiron return to the team for this season while Daniel Williamson and Tom Langford provide some new blood. Also joining the side is James Lawton, an effective forward who’ll bolster Angaston’s attack. Conversely, the Panthers have lost tall ruckman Michael Griffiths which will be a big out.
“If we can be consistent with our performance, we will be in finals contention,” Coach Matthew Herrmann explained. Angaston will need to maintain consistency on the scoreboard and in their contested football if they are going to hold a position up the top half of the ladder. In addition, winning more of the close games and getting off to a good start is vital for Angaston’s future success. Undoubtedly, last year’s wooden spooners will be a team to watch out for this season.

Tigers “roaring” to go
The Nuriootpa Tigers are looking like being real contenders this season with some good signings and a new head coach. Darren Reeves will commandeer the A-Grade squad and he couldn’t be happier to be coaching the side. “There’s a great abundance of talent and ability in the playing group,” Darren declared. The Tigers’ new signings include Chad Barmby, Tim Dimasi, Mark Rumbelow and former Essendon/ Port Adelaide/Nuriootpa junior star, Jay Nash.
Jarrod Tregenza will also return to the squad. It may take a while for the side to gel together, but when they do, Nuriootpa will be a tough opponent for any team. Nuriootpa’s new signings are not without their losses. Jack Juniper, Nathan Rayner, Sam Haniford and Jarrad O’Riley won’t be with the Tigers for the upcoming season. Nat Salter, Ryan Foulis and Alex Edwards will all be ones to watch for the Tigers with Salter and Foulis being effective up forward.

Tanunda to be troubling “We can be the same Tanunda force that has been around for years,” stated first year coach, Matthew Booth as the Tanunda Magpies amp up for the 2014 season. With new players, Matt Westhoff and Jason Baylis joining the already impressive team list, Tanunda will once again be in amongst it for the approaching season. The absence of Ben Schiller and Craig Bevan will be felt, but players like Tom Schiller, Leigh Westhoff, Ben Britton and Riley Harrison will certainly be ones to rise to the occasion. Tanunda has more incentive to strive for finals this season on account that they will host the Grand Final at their home ground.

The Redlegs are all set D & A P Haseldine
In his second year as Freeling coach, Richard Foster is looking to move the Freeling Redlegs up the ladder and claim a spot in the top four. The Redlegs struggled with their forward entry last season, with that final kick inside forward fifty consistency missing the mark. Freeling has focused on eradicating that and will now look to find goals more often as the season commences. The Redlegs have two new signings in Rian
Hornhardt and Joel Vaneveld. Vaneveld will play a potential full forward role while Hornhardt acts as a utility. “We’ve got a good mixture of guys in the squad,” Richard said. “The players we brought in, recruits, youngsters and current members gives us a good team capable of finals footy.” Young Adam Langford and Scott Williams will certainly be dangers for the Redlegs offensively.

match fitness and conditioning a close second. Coach Mackenzie will return to his role as unstoppable ruckman. The Bombers are seeing a big group of players returning to the side, all of which will boost the side’s performance. Jay Johnson, Brad Williams and Dan Ryan will play their roles in forward, midfield and defence to give the Bombers an advantage throughout the season.

Gawler Central to go one better Gawler Central came agonisingly close to premiership victory last season and are now focused on going that one step further. “After last year’s disappointment, it was hard to get over” Coach Damian Herzick stated. “But we’ve put that behind us and are focused on going one better.” This pre-season Gawler Central have focused on fitness and conditioning to a high degree. With a strong focus on running the ball out of defence and running teams off their feet, Herzick is very pleased with his squad’s efforts. “The boys are as fit as I’ve ever seen them.” There’s no doubt though that the significant losses of key ruckman, Luke Howard and vital players, Waylon Johncock and Damian Hillebrand
Proud Sponsors of the B.L. & G. Football Association, Nuriootpa Rover Football Club and the Nuriootpa Netball Club
will take their toll. However, Central have some handy new players in Charlie Molyneux, Tom Dunne, Casey Thomas and Craig Jamar to fill the void. Jamar will take the role of ruckman while Molyneux, Thomas and Dunne are capable of playing key positions around the ground. Of course opposition defences will have to keep a firm eye on damaging forward, Brad Mercer who will be looking for another century of goals this season. Youngster, Dylan Bell has shown impressive form in pre-season games and he’ll be raring to go. Matt Gibson was niggled by injury last season, but he’s fighting fit now and will certainly be one to watch.
Dog days gone by
We wish you all a great season and look forward to celebrating with you in the bar throughout the season.
Barossa District’s chances of a hatrick of premierships seem to be in doubt with the team incurring a large number of losses. Ross Christie, Heath Commane, Jock Cameron, Michael Taylor, Brad Coles, James Angus, Scott Jenkins and Darren Sharp make up a strong number of outs for the Bulldogs. Matt Stelzer also remains only a 50/50 chance to play this season. Remarkably, Barossa hasn’t signed any new
players to the squad and will look to the current list to provide the skill needed to match it with other sides. A top four spot would be ideal for the defending champions, but only time will tell. Dean Cutting and Adam Spencer will be up to their usual class while players like Giles O’Driscoll, Jack Charles and Ryan Watson will look to stamp their authority on the game during the season.

Donnybrooks are South Gawler ready to rumble are geared up With a bunch of returning and new players joining the squad, the Willaston Donnybrooks’ coach, Steve O’Connor is confident that his team can contest for a finals berth. “I’m very confident that we can improve on last season,” the Donnybrooks coach stated. “The comp’s going to even right up and we’ll need to be ready for anything.” Among the returning players for Willaston are Jarred Rozman, Kieran Stanley and Michael Hollis. Scott White and Michael Hawson join the side
from elsewhere. Hawson will be a handy utility player while White roves around the centre. With Travis Natt leaving the club, this remains Willaston’s only minus going into the upcoming season. Bradleigh Tosold and Jarrad McDonald have both had excellent pre-seasons and are likely to trouble opposing sides. O’Connor has kept his cards close to his chest in regards to a new game plan, but from what he’s seen during the pre-season matches, it’s looking very prosperous for the Donnybrooks this season.
Funding helps with club improvements “We have seen a lot of new players come through this season,” he said. “We had a tough season last year as the quality of our division is really high but we were still loving it and having a ball playing each week.” Alex said while they are a casual, friendly team; this season they are keen to “sharpen up” but still have as much fun in the process. There are a couple of players to watch out for this season including James Worrall, who returns from injury; James Ruwoldt in the midfield and Michael Cathcart, the all rounder on the field.
line-up. Kristian Economou and Ash Duncan have both left the club which led to South focusing on a strong defence structure to cover the losses. Players like Ben Kerr and Jackson Dare will be the ones to watch out for with Heath Lawry likely to be damaging also. The Lions are a strong favourite to make the finals, but a good start to the season is a must have for any side.

Two separate grants to help improve amenities will boost the Barossa United Junior Soccer Club, according to president, Mr Grant Bell. A major grant for $55,000 will assist with the erection of three, 20 metre light towers which will illuminate the whole main pitch and junior pitch and allow for greater flexibility for their 10 teams to train. Further funding has allowed for club improvements to their current facilities at Nuriootpa and the purchase of shelters and sports equipment. A committee is specifically working on grant applications and negotiations with the park committee has allowed for further improvements. There are further plans on the board, subject to funding, and will help to build the social aspect within the club. “It would be nice to have an area that has heating and cooling where a family can come in on a cold day,” said Grant. “It is really important to have the social aspect to the sport as well.” This season, which started on Saturday, had 10 teams take to the field from Under 7s through to, for the first time, full under 14, under 15 and under 17/18 sides. Grant said a good club culture, which has been backed by being awarded the Dennis Moore trophy which recognises player, coach and supporter behaviour, has helped build the club over the past few years. “There is a good club culture at the moment… some good coaching staff and I think we just have a good flow going through the club at the moment,” said Grant. Barossa United Junior Soccer Club is part of the Elizabeth and District Junior Soccer Association with teams as far as Tea Tree Gully, Angle Vale and Virginia. Locally, the club catchment extends to Riverton and Tarlee, the southern Barossa area and as far as Gawler. Of the 4,000 children in the competition; 120 of those are registered with the Barossa side and includes both boys and girls. “Families come from far and wide and parents are committed to bringing their children to training and on match day as well,” said Grant. Grant said the club is also looking forward to connecting to the Barossa United Tigers, the senior soccer side, allowing their juniors to continue to play the sport at senior level. Alex Worrall, president of the Barossa United Tigers Soccer, said player numbers have been “fantastic” this season as they enter their fifth season as a club.
South Gawler’s pre-season has led to a much faster and stronger Lions squad. South coach, Scott Lee remains confident that his squad can continue their strong performances. “I’m feeling pretty positive, we’ve got good kids coming up and everyone has become better players,” the third year coach clarified. thus ensuring the ongoing viability of the BLGFA. Clubs from all Leagues and Associations are still discovering the cost of player payments escalating. It is a problem that needs to addressed now or some clubs will no longer exist and Country football will suffer a long and painful demise. How do we fix this problem? I am not sure but a solution needs to be found and quickly. The SACFL is currently undertaking a review of the Approved Player Point System and incorporated in that review is a Salary Cap System. Any changes will not come into force until season 2015 at the earliest. Once again in 2014 the BLGFA, as part of the Eastern Zone, will compete in the SA Country Championships which will be played at Kadina over the weekend of July 5 and 6. Last year we had two players from the BLGFA selected in the State Country team to play against Western Australia. Whilst we encourage all players to make themselves available for Zone selection, as was the case in 2013, it is the wish of all the clubs that player participation be restricted to a maximum of one Senior Player from each club with three additional under age players to be found. Clubs have been asked do they support the concept of Zone football and early indicators say no. A review of Zone Football is being undertaken by the Community Football League and it will be interesting to see what the recommendations of that committee will be. During 2013 the BLGFA had strong representation of local product at Central District playing in all grades of the SANFL competition. This will continue during season 2014 and proves that our junior programme continues to grow and supply quality footballers at the elite level. Cooper Stoll of the Willaston Football Club and Caleb Edmead of Gawler Central Football Club represented the State at under 20 level. Also Damien Nangle of Barossa District Football Club represented the State at under 16 level. In closing, on behalf of the board, I wish to thank all those volunteers that are prepared to freely give their time year in and year out to ensure their clubs continue to grow and prosper. Good luck to all the football and netball teams for season 2014.
Round 6
April 12 marks the start of the Barossa, Light and Gawler Football Association for season 2014. I wish to formerly acknowledge the hard work of the past president, Nobby Symes for 20 years of service to this association. A passionate supporter of the BLGFA and SA Football in general. A warm welcome to all players, coaches, officials, club volunteers and sponsors. No football club can exist without all these people giving generously of their time to continue to make their clubs and this association successful. Looking back on season 2013, we had a great finals series, especially the A-Grade and Reserves Grand Finals. The league must congratulate the Gawler Central Sporting Clubs for their excellent organisation in hosting the Grand Final. Some clubs have had a big turnover of players, however 2014 looks to be another fantastic season. Unlike my predecessor I am not going to nominate a winner for the senior flag. As part of season 2014 we are excited to announce that this year’s ANZAC match to be played between Gawler Central and Willaston Football clubs will be a night game. The Gawler Central Sporting Club was successful in obtaining a grant to help with the cost of erecting new lights at the oval. Night football has been an initiative that the association was always going to give its full support too. We hope that other clubs in the association will follow their lead to have lights in place that will support more night football matches going forward. Carl Whitaker will continue as Senior umpires’ coach as will Sarah Jane Jameson in the junior role. The umpires’ association president has advised that numbers are tracking the same as 2013 but they are still actively recruiting additional personnel to fill field and boundary positions. We are indeed very fortunate to have this dedicated group of people prepared to take the field on a weekly basis to make sure all junior and senior games can take place. To all players, officials and supporters please respect the umpires as they go about their on field duties. Our junior competition continues to grow and the role of president of the Junior Committee has been taken on this year by Anthony Westbrook. Westy will also continue on in his role as Junior Football officer. Paul Healy will continue on in his role as Junior Development Co-ordinator. Both these men in conjunction with Central District Football Club and directors from our Board plus Todd Thorn have been working on a paper titled “Junior Football Future Directions” within the BLGFA. A paper with their thoughts and initial recommendations has been submitted to the clubs early this year for their comments. Our role is to ensure that the final recommendations that are approved from the paper will be implemented fully to provide a successful blueprint for the operation of junior football going forward. It is our duty as a board and clubs to see the smooth and successful transition of junior footballers to the senior level,

the amount of points they will be worth will vary, an ex-AFL player is worth five points and an SANFL player is worth four points. Although club loyalty is still strong with a number of players competing in more than 300 games for their local team, money is slowly taking on more of a role when it comes to recruiting. “You have to pay money to be good,” said Rick It is now harder than ever to become a successful team without money. Clubs make a lot of their money from their spectators and with the added challenging task of paying players, they may not make enough profit to stay afloat. “If you haven’t got success, the spectator attendance will drop off and the club revenue suffers,” said Rick. This of course leads to the sad reality of passionate clubs becoming extinct, affecting the whole community’s morale. “When a footy club dies, the town slowly does too.”

BLGFA president, Rick Pearson is concerned the expenses country football clubs are facing will lead to the extinction of some much loved teams. As the league prepares for the new season to commence, clubs need to make sure their teams are full and ready to compete, but are continually challenged with the increasing number of players and coaches that seek money in order to play. The Community Football League are looking to introduce a salary cap in order to keep a level playing field, preventing teams from going broke and stopping wealthier clubs from poaching other team’s players. However, Rick says that although a solution needs to be found, it would be nearly impossible to police a salary cap. “What’s to stop two people from meeting behind a shed for payments after the game,” Rick questioned. Currently the only restriction that clubs face when it comes to obtaining players is the approved player points system. This is based on each club’s wins average over the previous two years. Depending on a player’s previous experience,

Netball President’s Message The Barossa, Light & Gawler Netball Association anticipates another competitive year of netball. Competition continues to grow strong with all clubs fielding most senior and junior divisions this year. Thank you to all the club committees for working hard to field most teams, particularly those managing to field a Senior 7 and Sub-Junior 3 team. We expect our Senior 1 competition to be interesting this year with some familiar faces returning to play. A couple of clubs have reported some players stepping down this year but this only gives the younger girls a chance to step up into our top division. Again, we expect to see strategy come into play with high calibre coaches returning and continuing with the Association. The finals again might come down to coaching strategy. Umpiring and junior development will continue to be a priority across the Association this year. A number of umpires will be tested for their B and C badges this year and as the season commences we start trialling our top junior players to represent our Association at the Country Championships in June. We are proud to announce Tom and Judy Zorich and the Zorich Group as Major Sponsor of the Barossa Light & Gawler Netball Association this year. Our partnership will greatly assist the promotion of netball within our region and we thank Tom and Judy Zorich and their team at Sportspower Gawler and their other stores for their commitment to our sport. To all the players, umpires and support crews in both the netball and football competitions we wish you good luck for the season. BRIDEY LEWIS, President, BLGNA
Nuriootpa netballers plan a united front 2014 brings a lot of positives for the Nuriootpa Netball Club (NNC). The netball club is strengthening its relationship with the Nuriootpa Rover Football Club to create a more united front. Club members will see one joint newsletter this season with development in other areas over the year. Nuriootpa Netball Club acknowledged sponsors who continue their support in 2014 and welcome new sponsors who have come on board this season.
NNC’s focus this year is on player and coach development with a strong emphasis towards plenty of hard work, significant skills and team building together with a strong, caring and welcoming Club spirit. The club is also concentrating on Junior Development. After all, these young players are the future. Club members look forward to seeing a rebuild for NNC’s Senior 1 and 2’s. Some players are back after years away. These players are sure to make substantial
Freeling netballers looking keen and fit Training at the Freeling Netball Club is well underway, and players are looking keen and netball fit. Their efforts during pre-season has been highly commendable, with serious court work and a variety of ingenious fitness activities thrown in for good measure. Numbers during our first Senior trail night was outstanding. The club was abuzz with activity as players, coaches and umpires scrambled to get players on the court in a quest to select the winning combinations to include the usual mix of youth and experience. The club is grateful to see many new faces to the club this year, dotted amongst Senior grades. They have made this sometimes nerve racking task of joining a new club seem effortless, and have without a doubt, found their place in the club already. The 2014 coaches have taken on their roles with gusto and enthusiasm as agonize over the player selection process, a task that is never easy, as they try and find a best fit for their players and the club. After a brief absence from Freeling due to work commitments, the club welcomed back to her home club Beck Eales as Senior 1 coach for the FNC this year. Freeling are always on the hunt for a coach who shares its philosophies and club passion. This home grown Freeling girl certainly ticked all the boxes. All look forward to watching with excitement and wonder as she coaches the girls to their winning form. Beck is supported by Joy Leske, Senior 2 coach, and the players that surround her, of which she knows so well. The club prides itself on junior development and succession planning. This year will be no different. Deb Meaney has been appointed as its Junior Development Officer, a role which has kept her extremely busy thus far as she handles her role with professional enthusiasm. Juniors require special attention if the club is to succeed long term and Deb’s role is pivotal if this is to be achieved. With the undeniable knowledge, experience and support of Lyn Carmichael and the FNC committee, futuristic decision making and introducing innovative ways to develop juniors is certainly a strong focus in Freeling Netball Club. As with seniors, the junior numbers are also healthy, giving plenty of opportunity for new and enthusiastic players to enjoy their sport and find their netball feet. The club is proud this year, to fill all junior and senior grades, an achievement that Toni Oliver, president is sure will put the club in good stead for a successful 2014.
impacts both on and off the court. There is a good mix of experienced and young emerging players which will give these teams good depth and flexibility all over the court. Nuriootpa players are excited about the year ahead and they have already proven they are willing to put in the hard yards to get wins on the board in 2014. Major fundraiser for this year is ‘A Night at the Races’ on June 21. It’s sure to be a lot of laughs so pop the date in your diary with more information soon.

Netball Anna Cameron guiding Angaston’s seniors
MAJOR
A few changes have taken place at Angaston this year, with the loss of some senior and experienced players due to pregnancies and retirements. Anna Cameron will be guiding the emerging talent squad of Senior 1 and 2, supported again by Chelsea Duval. With new players to the club joining the young and up coming talent, they’re combing well at training. Pre-season across all grades has been excellent with the Senior 3 and 4 squads settling nicely under the direction of Jo Chapman. Bianca Strong and Ali Kendal are returning to the Senior 5’s and 6’s and their object again is aiming at a finals finish The club warmly welcomes both past and new junior players to Angaston for the 2014 season and are delighted to be able to field all junior teams. An informative Meet’n’Greet was held early in March for coaches, players and parents. This year’s focus on development has already resulted in four junior coaches completing NetballSA coaching accreditation levels (Development - Mel Gore, Del Hearnden and Foundation - Michelle Skipper, Sue Schiller). Meanwhile there has been some fabulous mentoring from senior players, Jane Ryan and Michelle Skipper and as a club all are thrilled to welcome new junior coaches, Megan Podolski, Emily Hayes and Kate Heading. Kimberley Seelander is coaching at the Country Championships on the June long weekend and the club encourages all players eligible to try out for this. Junior player, Toni Eberhard is representing the Angaston Netball Club at the Regional Academy. Mel Gore, secretary said, “We look forward to and wish all players best wishes for a great season.”

Netball Kapunda netballers Two senior welcome back “Stacka” coaches for Barossa District Barossa District Netball Club senior coaches for 2014 are Leanne Nelson and Joanne Medson. They are coaching both the senior one and senior two sides this year. The squad was announced in early January after trials and trained together as a unit until March when the teams were announced. Coaching both teams together, the club is looking to form a close bond between both teams to encourage unity and support amongst all players and ensuring movement of players between the teams without disruption to either side. There are a few new faces to the line-up in the 1-2 squad. They feature: Prue Hicks, previously from Kadina Netball Club; Courtney Ryan from Harlequin Netball Club; Laura Collins from Freeling Netball Club and Rylie Thompson from Inter 1 last year. The club hosts a number of talented youngsters that will move up into the senior ranks in 2014. In addition to current players, it is believed Barossa District Netball Club line-up will be strengthened and everyone looks forward to a successful season ahead. The club now has seven senior teams again this year and all look forward to a great season for all teams. In 2013 the Senior 7 side made the grand final and look forward to seeing the red, white and blue participating in many games during the final rounds in 2014. Players are also focussing on junior development. Club coaching clinics will be held within the junior ranks to improve skills, encourage teamwork, good sportsmanship and most importantly that everyone plays netball because they enjoy it. Hopefully with this in mind the club may retain many junior players that move away from sport due to loss of enthusiasm and “it’s no longer fun !”. “We at Barossa are proud of our club and our players. We cannot wait for the 2014 season. The girls have worked hard during the pre-season and will be great to see them hit the court,” said Teresa Grovermann, president.
Kapunda Netball Club Senior 1 coach for 2014 season is Stacey “Stacka” Burgess. This is Stacka’s 10th Year at KNC and her second as Senior 1 coach. She strives to once again play finals netball and to develop a winning culture, not only within the Senior 1 side, but in the club as a whole. A number of players are returning to the club this year, with Lana Bagshaw, Tab Mackenzie and Kim Creber all pulling on a Bombers suit again this season, as well as a number of players returning to netball after a number of years off. The club is also extremely excited for the prospects of junior netballers, with the largest
contingent of players being selected in the U13 and U15 2014 Lower North Academy Development squad this year. All look forward to this carrying through into senior netball also in the coming years. In conjunction with Kapunda Tennis Club and Dutton Park Committee, Kapunda Netball Club have made some wonderful improvements to their facilities over the past year, with new court surfaces and fencing, paving around the clubrooms and upgrades to bathroom facilities. There are a number of other projects also on the go and everyone looks forward to this continuous improvement to their club facilities.

Pre-season trials (back in January/ February) were well attended with new and returning players. Unfortunately for the club there were too many players and quite a few were turned away. The club is looking to field 17 teams in season 2014 and hosted the preseason Zorich Cup on Sunday. Hosting Anzac Day games versus Willaston on the Friday, not Saturday is something new! Football is being played too with A-Grade under lights at 6.15 p.m.
With an array of new faces joining the club this season, Tanunda Netball Club are hoping to build on their success from 2013. Whilst Tanunda are feeling the loss of Kate Jolly from their senior 1 side, they have Nicole Crouch returning and have also picked up recruits new to the Barossa to take part in the senior 1 squad – Catherine Bishop and Hayley Spaans. The senior teams are gelling very well – Maria Fraser and Jeanette Hooper are hoping to build on the fifth position finish for both the senior 1 and senior 2 teams from last season. Experienced coaches throughout the junior grades means that improvements in skills should be quite noticeable and the club is keen to see this result in wins on the board throughout the season. Tanunda Netball Club is also undertaking a makeover of their courts, commencing early in the season and the first stage to be finished in time to host the grand final in September.
The 2013 season for the Barossa, Light & Gawler Netball Association produced an abundance of talent after finishing with a five-way tie for the top spot at the presentation dinner. The players were Megan Heinrich, Freeling; Lisa Wilson, Willaston; Karina Cook, South Gawler; Penny Chappell, Kapunda and Stacey Burgess, Kapunda. The girls will be hoping to back up their efforts in the 2014 season.
Scott Waddington is Gawler Central head coach Scott Waddington has been appointed new Club Head Coach at Gawler Central Netball Club, taking Senior 1 and 2 as a squad and helping to develop Inters also. Other grades in the club have some continuing coaches and some new coaches. Scott also ran a coaching course recently for all club coaches so that coaches for all grades will be accredited. Club president, Leanne Songer said this will strengthen skills for all players.

GAME ON! Rugby Barossa Rams look forward to another season in premier grade The Barossa Rams began a new era in season 2013 with the Club entering the Premier League for the first time in their short history, and, this season the Rams look forward to a more competitive winning season. With a Senior team entered into both Division 1 and Division 2 along with the Junior ranks grown to include mixed boy’s and girl’s Under 8’s through to Under 12’s and a boy’s Under 14’s and 16’s, the club is going from strength to strength. This can be seen by the number of ‘yougsters’ willing to attend training Tuesday and Thursday nights, with the Rams being able to field Junior teams in all Junior grades. With the Barossa Rams now playing in the Premier Division, the club will have a full programme of games throughout the home game day, commencing from 8 a.m. at Lyndoch Oval. Last year an Under 16’s High School girls’ team was introduced for the first time in Australian Rugby history which allows girls to continue playing rugby after Under 12’s.
This year a great turnout of young ladies have come forward wanting to compete in this physical sport. The Barossa High School girls’ team is made up of high school aged girls from all around the district with training nights for the girl’s to be held in Gawler. Rugby has positions for all body shapes and types – from those too short for netball or basketball but can duck and weave; to the stronger but less agile of those who can make up the driving forwards with strength and control. Premier Grade Coach, Nigel Peters started his pre-season training mid-January and the Rams have gained a large number of new players; young and old, experienced and new to the game. The Barossa Rams are again looking like the “United Nations of Rugby” with players from many different countries including Australia and the usual England, Fiji, New Zealand and many more rugby nations. With the return of a few seasoned players like ‘Big Bad’ Brad Mackay and Blake Gontar, the Rams are always looking
to pick up more players of any skill level and ability during the season to help swell the ranks. This season a large number of new players have come into the fold including a Queensland hooker, Mason Canning and a previous junior player, Daniel Mackay who is now eligible to play in the senior ranks. Once again the Barossa Rams will be looking for continued improvement of up-coming young players like Joe Crouch and Michael Moloney during the season, but with some new skilled players and the skilled coaching abilities of Head Coach Nigel Peters; the Rams expect to be even more competitive this year. The Rams first home game at Lyndoch Oval is in round 2 on May 3 against Brighton. With a full schedule of home games at Lyndoch Oval, a few of the junior games will be played at Lyndoch Primary School. Contacts for the Barossa Rams Rugby Club are Head Coach, Nigel Peters 0438 854 673 and Junior Co-ordinator, Brenton Baker 0417 813 141.
Barossa Rams Rugby Club juniors: U7’s Connor Wylie, U8’s Dylan Hewson, U10’s Alkira Prior, U12’s Rylie Moore, U12’s Kiara Morrison, U16’s Girl’s team, Aine Rutley; U14’s Connor Moore and U16’s Tyler Sands.

Hockey standards set to soar Hockey in the region will soar to a new level this season when teams in the Barossa Valley Hockey Association play on their new artificial turf pitch under lights at Stockwell Recreation Park. The $1.2 million facility was officially opened on April 6 and is expected to significantly change local hockey. Mrs Sue Stephen, President of the Barossa Valley Hockey Association is excited about the future of hockey in the region. “Player skill set, style of play and speed of the game are all different on artificial surfaces compared to grass,” she said. “Even the umpires will have to make adjustments with the pace of the game being generally faster. The surface will particularly be appreciated on those wet days where the grass fields often ended up very soggy and sometimes muddy underfoot. Games will be able to be programmed as often as needed without having to wait for the surface to recover,” said Sue. And in a completely new concept for players, the facility offers sufficient lighting to enable night matches to be played. “Two senior games will be held most Friday nights, along with games being played into the evening on Saturdays. At this early stage, it appears this will be very popular with players and supporters. “The atmosphere at night games is expected to be very different compared to day time games. By being able to spread the games out, rather than previously having to play three or four games at the same time, it will enable coaches to watch other games and more umpires will be available,” said Sue. All national and international hockey has been played on artificial surfaces for a number of years and players in the Barossa Valley Hockey Association who aspire to those levels will now be able to hone their skills without the need to travel elsewhere. “We will still be programming matches on the grass at Karbeethan Reserve in Gawler. It is important to the BVHA that hockey continue to have a presence in the Gawler district,” said Sue.
Tristan Pfeiffer, Tanunda; Mitchell Waechter, AMU; Brayden Warner, Nuriootpa and Bailee Kerin, Gawler Strikers love the new synthetic turf at Stockwell Recreation Park.

Hockey 2014 BVHA season overview The withdrawal of Playford Wells Hockey Club from the Barossa Valley Hockey Association has meant a decrease in the overall number of teams playing this season. However, the change will not impact the viability of the competitions said Mrs Sue Stephens, President of the BVHA. “We will again run A grade and B grade senior competitions for men and women,” she said.
A GRADE MEN
The A grade men competition will consist of four teams: AM United, Nuriootpa, Tanunda and Trinity. These teams finished in the top four positions in 2013, so they should produce a strong competition.” And Tanunda will be keen to back up last year’s Premiership which ended Nuriootpa’s much documented decade of dominance. It will be a case of seeing which of the four teams can adapt better to playing on the new surface.
A GRADE WOMEN
Henry Laycock, Tanunda; Mitchell Waechter, AMU; Oriel Gallasch, Nuriootpa and Ben Johnson, Gawler Strikers with Mrs Courtney Ribbons who was the driving force behind the development of the new synthetic turf at Stockwell, and Mrs Sue Stephen, President of the Barossa Valley Hockey Association.Courtney was awarded Life Membership of the BVHA at the official opening of the turf on April 6 in recognition of her tireless efforts with the project.

Stockwell Recreation Park’s new artificial turf pitch has been a long time in the planning. Interest in building such a facility was first mooted back in 1990 and several attempts were made to fulfil the grand plan during that decade. A long term planning committee was established, but by the end of 1999 a sub-committee reported to the Barossa Valley Hockey Association AGM that momentum for the project had come to a halt. An artificial turf seemed to be scrapped from future plans for the Association, despite concerns raised that the Association “might get left behind in developing the skills of our players”. Enter Mrs Courtney Ribbons, a passionate hockey player and member of the Nuriootpa Hockey Club. She re-established the long term planning committee in mid 2004, which this time looked keen to move forward. It seemed the next generation of hockey players wanted more. “We wanted a plan for financial stability and growth; We wanted to develop a mission and core values and have all clubs agree to the direction of the Association,” she said. Courtney was a driving force, yet despite acknowledgement that BVHA was the largest country association without an artificial turf, she saw initial enthusiasm from member clubs fall. Courtney kept the committee going and following more discussions, all clubs listed the development of an artificial playing surface as a priority. The possibility of setting up an artificial turf fund began, a levy was introduced for clubs and the process of fund raising began. The BVHA received a $500,000 SA Government grant and The Barossa Council contributed $100,000 with an ongoing commitment of up to $15,000 per year. The Barossa Council is also guaranteeing a $515,000 20 year loan to the BVHA through the Local Government Authority. The remaining cost was met by donations, sponsorship and funds from the BVHA and member clubs. Years of planning and several changes in the proposed location, eventually resulted in pitch construction beginning at Stockwell Recreation Park in November 2013. Courtney’s mother and President of the BVHA, Mrs Sue Stephens told “The Leader” that researching the history of the turf had been an interesting process. “Reading past minutes is so enlightening, even if it just shows how many of the same issues just kept arising and never got solved! It has also reinforced the enormity of what Courtney has done, almost single-handedly, in securing this facility. So many years of planning, grant writing, council meetings, sponsor chasing – all by herself,” she said. The turf was officially opened on April 6. Australian Hockeyroo’s Gold Medallist, Katie Allen OAM joined the party of young “Come N Try Hookin2Hockey” players; led a junior coaching clinic and witnessed the ribbon cutting ceremony before Men and Women’s matches of Barossa Valley versus Riverland “christened” the newly opened surface.
Five teams will contest this competition: AM United, Gawler, Nuriootpa, Tanunda and Trinity. The ladies will appreciate the bye given that this season will be longer than usual. AM United will be hoping to continue their recent domination in both women’s competitions but there is plenty of experience in the other teams keen to stop them.
B GRADE MEN
Both Nuriootpa and Tanunda have added an extra team to this competition resulting in 5 teams: AM United plus two teams each from Nuriootpa and Tanunda. This has been a Tanunda stronghold for a number of years so it will be interesting to see the outcome with an extra team.
B GRADE WOMEN
This will be a four team competition: AM United, Gawler, Nuriootpa and Tanunda. It is always a hard grade to predict results with teams made up of a mixture of experience and youth. Some players who retired at the end of last season might reconsider in order to have a run on the new pitch.
JUNIORS
The BVHA junior grades for season 2014 will be U14 and U17. Nuriootpa and Tanunda, as the bigger clubs, are traditionally the stronger teams in the older grade, but the U14 competition is never predictable. Teams will play about half their games on the new pitch and will need to be adaptable to both the new surface and grass. The junior season begins on May 3 with breaks on the June long weekend and school holidays.
HOOK IN2 HOCKEY
This is a fun and exciting way to get involved in playing hockey and is targeted at children aged from 5-11. All clubs offer mid week programmes with an optional Saturday modified rules game against the participants from other clubs (in U9 and U11 age groupings). This is the breeding ground for the players of the future and much fun is had by all, regardless of the early start or the weather. Having a run on the new pitch should be a highlight for these youngsters, where the ball will run smoother and faster.
Trinity puts Barossa teams on notice Trinity Hockey Club is approaching the 2014 season with youthful vigour. Following a stint in the B grade in 2012, their men’s team made an A grade finals appearance in 2013. The boys are looking to put the Barossa based teams on notice and play their way to a Premiership. Their women’s team is also looking competitive this season, with a high influx of new players. The girls are building upon their excellent work last season, where they continually improved game by game, and are striving to become one of the leading teams in the women’s competition. As always Trinity Hockey Club warmly welcomes any new players, whether seasoned veterans or brand new recruits. The Club is excited to be playing on the new turf, and is looking forward to playing games under lights, while keeping the traditional grass fixtures at Gawler will help ease them into this exciting new era. Hopefully 2014 will break the Premiership drought For the Trinity Old Scholar’s Club.
GAME ON!
Hockey
Tanunda looking for back to back Tanunda Hockey Club President, Nick Dry said “There are many things to be excited about this season at Tanunda Hockey Club; brand new turf, a number of major player milestones to celebrate and a funfilled social calendar.” There are high expectations for both the men’s and women’s squads this year. The A men, coached again by Graeme Sexton, are looking strong this season, and with no major losses to the squad, and one handy inclusion, will be looking to achieve back to back flags. With two teams entered into the B-men competition the ‘turtles’ may find it difficult to secure their sixth flag in a row, however considering that their main rival, Nuriootpa will also be fielding two teams in that competition, there is every chance of achieving this memorable milestone. Danni Casey has taken over
coaching the A women from club legend, Dave Smith. Dave has left the squad in a very good position and with a couple of new inclusions to bolster the mid-field and forward line, Danni is confident of getting the team to the Grand Final and hopefully ultimate glory. The B women are also looking strong this year and, bolstered by added depth in the squad, they too are hoping to go one better this season. Tanunda is very excited about watching their juniors this season and are particularly interested in helping them develop new skills to thrive on the new turf surface. What better way to start the season than last Friday night’s block-buster against traditional rivals, Nuriootpa. Tanunda are looking forward to bumper crowds to support their teams during the season, particularly for those games on the new turf pitch.
Nuriootpa eager to reclaim glory The Nuriootpa Hockey Club senior men have been working hard on the track for several months now in preparation for the 2014 season. Finishing runner up in both A and B grades last year, the squad is highly motivated and looking to reclaim the title this year. Coach, Marty Gallasch and Assistant Coach, Ross Beckwith are both continuing their roles this year and have been assisted by Craig and Greg Schulz and Cameron Mullins over the preseason period. Player numbers are good and as a result the club will be entering two B Grade Men’s sides for the first time since 2003. The expectation is that many of the young players from last year will take on more responsibility within the side this year as the team is shaped, players like Steven Oag and Dexter Falkenberg should make an impact. The return of Ben Parbs (North East HC), Sam Griffith (study) and Cameron Mullins (injury) will also add to the depth of the squad this year. Obviously the dawning of the turf era in the BVHA will impact on the style of game played but most players have a measure of experience on the surface. While there will be some adjusting to do, playing Friday and Saturday nights under lights is an exciting prospect for most. One thing seems certain and that is that the competition will be very even this year. 2014 will be a challenging year for all clubs in the Barossa competition with the change in playing surface.
However, with the work that the Nuriootpa women’s squad have put in last season and pre-season this year’s coach, Bek Moroney is confident that they can improve on last year’s preliminary finals exits for both the A and B grade teams. “We have lost a couple of key players in Donna Vander Biezen and Tracey Fischer from the regular starting line-up and emerging talents in Jess Griffith and Laura Hermann are, for personal reasons, unable to join us on the playing field this year. However with juniors such as Kloe Schiller, Michaela Mile stepping up and showing that they are all but ready for the challenge of A grade women as well as the return Kim Blatchford I am more than confident that we are in for a successful year,” said Bek. The girls travelled to the Port Adelaide District Hockey Club for four training sessions this pre-season prior to the new pitch at Stockwell Park being handed over. “I am really pleased with the way they are adapting to the new surface and the change in the style of hockey that I want them to play. We are adapting this across the entire senior squad and there are many B grade women pushing their possible selection into the A grade. “I am very much looking forward to the season ahead and believe that we have a strong foundation to build on that will breed success for the club in season 2014,” said Bek.
A new look and challenge for Gawler Hockey Club A new look Gawler Hockey Club will take to the pitch this year after winning a grant for new club uniforms this season. The club will have strong representation in the A and B Women’s competitions but are unable to field any senior men’s teams. This year Gawler will be very much in re-building mode. The club is focusing on increasing junior player numbers, in particular working to target key areas to help attract and retain girls in the local competition,” she said. The Gawler Hockey Club committee has been busy during the off season developing the club’s
new look and direction whilst working towards becoming a recognised Star Club. Focussing on junior player recruitment and development, the Gawler Hockey Club will again be running “Come N Try” sessions in conjunction with their Hook in2 Hockey programme. The introduction of the new artificial turf pitch at Stockwell Recreation Park is seen by the club as a great opportunity for hockey in the Barossa Valley and Gawler districts yet they understand the need to ensure that hockey continues a playing presence within Gawler.
New tricks and strategies for AM United It’s an exciting time for the Barossa Valley Hockey Association and AM United are looking forward to the challenge. AMU will field a side in each senior grade again this season which is a great effort for one of the smaller clubs. The aim of the club is to promote hockey in a friendly atmosphere and competitive nature. Both women’s sides will again be strong on the field. Samantha Schmidtke has the proven formula to win the A grade so these girls will not be taking a backward step. The younger members are getting much needed game time and growing in confidence and skills. There will be a few faces missing from last year but the girls will be up there again at the pointy end of the season. B grade women have had a change of coach with Janice Guerra retiring. Alyssa Stephens will step into the coaching role and brings with her a wealth of experience and the respect of the players. The team is keen to get out and start the season the way they finished last year - winning. Men’s sides are training hard on both the turf and on the grass. A couple of old players have returned to strengthen the B Grade so there is no way they will be the whipping boys of the competition. A grade will be competitive as always and looking for that elusive next step. New strategy and disciplines are looking good on the training track so far. Darryl
Barnden is being assisted by a senior group of players to give both the sides as much information and structure as they can manage. In his thirtieth year as a player, Darryl has a few tricks up his sleeve to try and surprise the opposition. The turf pitch has been long awaited by many members and the club will be embracing the challenge of the different surface and the predictability of the ball movement. The junior teams will be strong this year. The U14 side, almost unchanged from last year, will only gain from an extra year experience and playing together. Greg Koch again takes the reign as coach and brings a real focus on basics. U17 is also basically the same side as last year so will be stronger as a group and, with the return of a couple of players that were ineligible last year, they may be a dark horse this year. Playing in the grand final last year gave them much needed experience. The affable Michael Graetz continues as coach and brings enthusiasm and his own unique style to the side. Friday night games will allow the club members to support the other teams within the club without having to rush off to get ready to play or playing at the same time. It also gives them the chance to head back to one of the sponsors for some responsible team/club bonding.
