fifth finals appearance in as many years under Coach, Scott Lee. The South Gawler Football Club’s A-Grade The team has lost a key member of their squad has taken big hits during the off- team in the versatile Heath Lawry, with the season, but is still on track to battle for its former Central Districts player joining the Happy Valley Football Club. Bradley Walkley (Torrens Valley) and Ryan Appleton (travelling) are other departures who have put a dent in South’s finals aspirations. The senior coach says these players will be sorely missed, but believes the team is amongst the congested battle for finals. “The goal for our club this season is to put ourselves in a position during the season to make the finals,” said Scott. “There are some good sides about - Nuri and Centrals will still be up and about. I think Tanunda have Goal kicking on-baller, Matthew Foldesdy will looked good as well.”

be an important cog for South Gawler.

Lighting quick midfielder, Jackson Dare, along with goal kicking on-baller, Matthew Foldesdy and midfielder/forward, Patrick White will be important cogs for the team - and are proving as such on the track, according to their coach. South Gawler have welcomed new players to the fold, with former Norwood reserves player, Geoffrey Penfold and talented journeyman, Timothy Hines from the Kowree Naracoorte Tatiara Football League and, more recently, the Dromana football club (Nepean Football Netball League). Many of the other recruits, such as Luke Childs and Jayden Brewin, are in the 1218 age bracket, boosting the junior talent —which is already promising. These handy additions may be the key to South Gawler to go one step further in this year’s finals, but consolidate their position in the top four for many years to come.

Willaston’s recruiting spree Prized recruit and former AFL player, Josh Glenn is one of the many new additions for Willaston Football Club’s upcoming season. The 21 year-old, who managed five games for the Gold Coast Suns, is joined at the club by ex-Port Adelaide rookie forward, Stuart Ferenci, along with former stateleague players, Shaun C h i l d s a n d Je r e m y Johncock, both returning to the club. New coach of the Willaston Football Club, Malcolm Greenwood, believes the injection of experience will be beneficial for the youthful group and the performance of the team. “ We ’ v e i d e n t i f i e d the players that we thought we needed to bring into the club and these types of players bring professionalism to the forefront. So we are happy with how recruiting went,” said Malcolm. “With the return of a couple of players as well, I think we are going to be a little bit stronger and the experience this year will blend in with the kids.” The former Tanunda

dual-premiership player, who replaces Steve O’Connor as coach, is looking to add consistency to the club’s performances after a year of some disappointing losses. “Obviously we are looking at improving as a football club and just getting to that point where we are competitive,” said Malcolm. “There were points last year where a lot of our losses were noncompetitive.” The players seem to have fallen in line with the coach’s visons for the season as well, with Malcolm indicating the numbers at training have been strong. “I’m pretty happy with the whole squad. Every single player has improved their fitness in what has been a really tough pre-season,” said the Willaston coach. “During the pre-season we’ve identified our weaknesses and we’re working on them.” The coach has also called on the team to help key recruit, Josh Glenn, deal with the extra attention he may receive from the opposition. “We will have to nurse him through because he is going to get a little bit of attention (coming out

of the AFL). So we’ll try and manage him as best we can,” said the head coach. Malcolm is not only expecting the new faces to improve the team, but the youthful ones who had a taste of A-Grade football last year. “There are a few kids coming through. Young Jayden Walsh is one you’ll probably have to look out for,” said Malcolm. “Throughout the course of last year the lack of depth gave those guys the experience, so

they’re going to be better for the run this year. “The first year coach says his team is “really looking forward to getting out there. “Come round one verses Nuriootpa we hope to implement what we have done over the pre-season and just see how we go, so it’s going to be a process for us,” said Malcolm. “It’s an evenly spread competition this year and any side on their day will be able to win games of footy.”

Steady South set sail to fifth straight final

HE’S BACK: Daniel Stanley in action during the 2014 season second Semi-Final against Willaston. The Gawler Central player was awarded the Schluter Medal that year and returns to the B., L. & G. Football Association this season after a stint at Geelong.

Gawler Central have formed formidable sides over the past two years, winning five premierships in the past two years—but premierships are not everything for this club. Gawler Central Football President, Rodney Knight says while the A-Grade strives for success, the club is more concerned on the improvement of their players across other grades. “Obviously each year we want to win the A-Grade premiership but generally we don’t really set out to win premierships in other grades,” said Rodney. “In other grades our focus is really on the development of our players and trying to develop them into either a higher level or eventually into our A-Grade.” The club may be saying goodbye to two respected clubmen in Aaron King and Shane Souter, whose retirements are pending, while Nathan Flynn and Brad Hunt have moved to Queensland and Sydney, respectively. These losses have been combated with the return of 2014 Schluter medallist, Daniel Stanley—returning from Geelong and Corey Solly—spent some time with West Adelaide during last season.

Charlie Molyneux may also have some stints with the club—depending on his availability as he continues with the Adelaide Crows reserves side. The recruitment of Kadina midfielder, Craig Taylor and former Central Districts’ key position player/ruckman, Cooper Stoll, who returns from a two year absence, will also boost the team’s depth. It is a star-studded line-up for the team this year, which already contains players in the calibre of last year’s Schluter medallist, Jason Blakemore; gun forwards, Brad Mercer and Thomas Dunn, and premier ruckman, Craig Jamar. With the rise of promising youngsters like Kyle Wurst and Dylan Bell as well, it seems the club’s senior teams are set to challenge for many years to come. Though, for Rodney Knight, the club cannot be complacent that results will fall for them as the league is quite competitive this season. “We think we are very well positioned, but we also understand other clubs have also been recruiting pretty well, so I think we are in for a nice, even season. “We are looking forward to the season.”

Nuriootpa ‘strive for higher’ Tanunda By Cohen Mortimer prepares for competitive year

President’s Message Welcome to the 2016 season. During the off season I have taken on the President’s role for season 2016 and must say while I am excited about the challenge ahead it is also a very nervous time. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Bridey Lewis for all her time and commitment she has put into the BL&GNA over the last few years. Judging from the discussions I have with the clubs over the last few months, the season is looking promising for all clubs. There has been lots of player movements within clubs, new players into our association, new coaches and new personnel into leadership roles at committees. Team nominations are looking strong for all, with strong numbers within all clubs. It looks that all clubs will fill a Senior 7 team which is believed to be the first time ever. Well done all. Once again we welcome all sponsors on board. Nominations are now closed for our Junior country carnival teams. We will be filling a 13 and Under, 15 and Under and also a 17 and Under team who are due to compete over the June long weekend. The selection process will be underway in just a couple weeks and we wish all the players, coaches and support staff all the best for the carnival. We are now looking for nominations for both our A-Grade and B-Grade team and as an association we are looking to be able to fill teams of very high standard to compete to show just how strong and competitive our association is. I thank all the board of directors, the director of umpires and junior development and the other executive committee who have put up their hand to attend our monthly board meetings to help make the best decisions for our association and to run a smooth 2016 season. I wish the best of luck to all the clubs for their quest for success in season 2016. I look forward to seeing some great improvement from within all juniors and most importantly I wish that all netball will be played in the spirit of the game. Sarah Johnson, President, BL&G Netball Association.

The Tanunda Netball Club are looking forward to a competitive year in all grades. They have easily filled all grades for the 2016 season, in the primary and netta grades they have an abundance of players with enough to fill three teams in each division. With the support of parents, the Club has discussed ways to give all players an opportunity to take court and develop their skills at trainings. The Club welcomes the return of some experienced senior players who will combine well with the existing players and those young players playing their first year in senior grades from intermediates last year. Amy Hart returns as coach of the senior 1’s with this season planned for a very different Tanunda side taking the court in the Division 1 competition. With only two players from last year returning to the Magpies this year, they have had the opportunity to promote some Division 2 players and also include promising young players from the Inter 1 outfit from last year. Players leaving the side this year include Hayley Spaans (Kapunda), Brooke Edson (Nuriootpa), Sam Lynch (Morphett Vale), Holly Cowland (Swan Reach), Sophie Alderslade who is taking some time away from netball this season to focus on studies, and Lauren Martin who will be leaving the state to pursue work opportunities in late June. This leaves Catherine Harper (Bishop) and Tamara Crouch as the only remaining Division 1 players from last season. The Club have promoted Toni Martin and Amy Mickan from Division 2 who both had solid seasons last year, and Holly Edson and Caitlin Scott from the Inter 1 side. Tanunda are also excited to welcome Kyla Newman from Lobethal this year. Amy Hart said, “We are welcoming this year the intermediate 1 players to all senior 1 and 2 trainings with the view to long term player development at the club. “Whilst it is hard to predict how our year will go, we are confident that the group we have will develop throughout the year and show tremendous growth. “We have a young, vibrant squad of players with enormous potential, and the attitude already displayed at trainings and trial matches fills me with confidence that we can make some great headway this year in developing the youth at Tanunda.”

An overhaul for Willaston By Cohen Mortimer

A restructure of the netball committee has produced an overhaul within the club, including a change in presidents, coaches and players. New Willaston President, Nat Hill, who replaces Katrina Frederick, is only one of the alterations which include a new vicepresident (Anne-Marie Coombs), new senior one coach (Sharon Batchelor) and the loss of senior one premiership players. Despite the loss of their 2015 senior one premiership coach, Roz Fraser—who is now coaching the Barossa Districts senior team, the new board have secured a highly qualified replacement in Sharon Batchelor. The president believes the former Oakdale Phoenix assistant coach’s experience has shone through during her short time at the helm. “She is working really hard with the girls and has done a fantastic job during the pre-

season - we are looking pretty good for this year,” said Nat. Many of the premiership players, such as Jess Wilson, Lisa Wilson, Haley Maher, Lee Barnett and Bronwyn Heap, have followed former coach, Fraser, out the door. Though, Nat views the situation as “an opportunity for other players to step up and play senior ones.” Premiership players, Renee Dale and Rebekah Parker are reportedly setting the example on the training track. While the team may struggle to reach the same heights it has in winning the last two premierships, president, Nat Hill has simplified the goals for the upcoming season. “Our goal is to develop our younger players and strengthen our senior teams,” said the president. The interest this year will be if the new coach will be able to get the new-look team to work in tandem on the courts and give them a chance to defend their premiership.

Nuriootpa Netball Club will ‘strive for higher’ this year after a season where the senior teams struggled to be competitive. President, Tania Materne says the new motto is an indication of their goals in “getting a lot more wins on the board.” “Our focus is rebuilding senior strengths and consolidating our junior success we have had over the last few years, while developing our juniors,” said Tania. The club has taken many strides during the off-season to achieve these targets. Departing is senior one coach, Heidi Gogoll, has been replaced with co-coaches Lynlee Mangelsdorf and Sally-Ann Vivian. The second year president is excited about the two sharing the senior one and two coaching duties. “Lynlee has been a long term Nuri player and coach for us and she has stepped up into that role, while also playing senior twos,” said Tania. “Sally-Anne Vivian is new to the club and she has come on board to help and mentor Lynlee.” The strength of the senior teams also

looks promising with all senior squads filled according to Tania. “We have a full complement of players for all seven teams, which we haven’t had for the last couple of years,” said the President. “Sixteen new seniors are coming in and that has really bolstered our talent list. So we have got a really good looking list this year.” In the senior one team, Nuriootpa have improved their attack, recruiting goal shooters, Brooke Edson and Tarnie Shinnick. Brooke Edson, from the Tanunda Netball Club, is coming to the club off some great form, while Tarnie Shinnick is an under 17’s 2015 National Championships state representative from Bordertown. These new additions will link up with centre Emily Cook in a seemingly damaging combination for opposition teams. The experience amongst the club will assist the transition of young guns, Tarnee Helbig and Maddie Perry, who will be entering their first years of senior ones and senior twos, respectively. Expect to see an overall improvement for the Nuriootpa Netball Club on the courts this year.

New faces at South Gawler Angaston’s strength During the 2016 netball season South Gawler Netball Club welcome a few new faces to the club, from juniors through to senior grades. They are already seeing a lot of depth within junior grades. There is some great versatility and potential talent emerging with a lot of younger girls stepping up into higher age groups this season. Supported by Coach; Karina Cook - the tall-standing Inter 1 team is looking good to climb the ladder if their recent trial game against Tango was any indication. Success with the NetSetGo programme at the club has also generated a lot of excitement with younger players and the club congratulates all the girls who will be playing their very first game of netball here at South Gawler in Round 1.

As previously mentioned, South Gawler have some new faces at the den; specifically in the Senior 1 side. The club has given out two new pairs of socks to put in the draw, the newly welcomed are Katelyn Platten and Nicolle Saunders. Also in the team are the familiar faces of Sonja Davey and Nicole Dowden, stepping up from their positions in the Senior 2’s last season. Coming back to the team from pregnancy will be Stacey Holman. Also returning are Emma Dekort, Anna Dunn, Jessica Platten and Kayla Schultz. The senior 3 girls were seen in action in a trial against Two Wells at training where they worked hard as a unit to attack and convert the ball at every opportunity. Players, Maddie Bush, Lauren Haynes, Emma Brazell and Georgia Proctor are new to the Senior 2 Division. Team members, Erin Butcher, Paula O’Donoghue, Erin Shanks and Kimberley Thomson are returning. All performed well in their trial game against Two Wells also. While the club is very excited to see so many new players, it will not see Karina Cook, Carmen Gaskell, Brooke Giorgetti or Kayla Collins don the blue bodysuit this season. Now that the beginning of the season is in sight South are very excited to see some great netball being played at home against Tanunda in Round 1. Adding to the stirring atmosphere is the player auction event which is also being held at the club that night. With more than a few new players at the club, the stakes are set to be a little more of a gamble for this season than previous. Best wishes to all players and officials for a successful start to the season.

across the board By Cohen Mortimer

The aim for this year is simple for the Angaston Netball Club—consistency amongst all teams. Netball President, Melanie Gore is confident such outcome is capable with the teams on the court this year, thanks to the efforts of the committee. “Our committee has been working tirelessly throughout the off season to ensure we have an exciting and rewarding season for all at Angaston this year,” said Melanie. “We are very pleased that we have been able to easily fill all 11 junior sides, 7 senior sides and will again run our Net Set Go programme. “We want to create an environment for all netballers and coaches to take their netball to the next level whilst still enjoying the game they love.” The club will showcase many new faces across the teams this year and Melanie says the club has welcomed them with arms wide open. “Many of our players at the club this year are new and have been welcomed by our returning players,” said the president. “I am very excited to see the mix of new and regular players out on the courts this year.”

Barossa District welcome influx of new players By Cohen Mortimer An influx of players, both young and old, at the Barossa District Netball Club is helping to build the foundations for many years of success. The club has pulled off a recruiting coup, signing a central figure from Willaston’s 2015 senior one premiership team—coach Roz Fraser. Roz, who has previously coached in the state league and is South Australia’s state coach programme manager, has also brought a wealth

of former Willaston players. Former Willaston captain and wing attack, Jess Wilson; goal shooter, Lisa Wilson; centre, Haley Mayer (formerly Norris); circle defender, Lee Barnett and goal attack, Bronwyn Heap have all headed into the Barossa. Barossa District Netball President, Teresa Grovermann who was re-elected for season 2016, is hoping the changes will assist the improvement of senior teams and the first finals appearance for senior ones since 2007. “We would like our seniors to be more competitive this year because, besides our senior threes [who won the premiership last year], we have not been competitive in most grades for quite a while,” said Teresa. “For senior ones, the major focus is to get to finals. But the goal would be to win a premiership.” Rebecca Sims will make her senior one debut this year, but will be in familiar territory - having previous experience under Roz at the Garville Netball Club. The club has also maintained the loyal services of 2015 Captain, Taryn Wills; senior one best & fairest win-

ner, Lisa Bowman and the talented goal attack, Danni Russell. There are concerns over the participation of Bronwyn Heap this year, according to Teresa, due to a knee problem. However, while these girls will be instrumental to the progression of the senior teams, the president’s priorities are centred on the entire club. “We want our whole club to be successful, not just the top two senior teams, so that’s what we are aiming for,” she said. “We have started to improve in the past two or three years, mainly from our junior development, but we want to improve on that in the next couple.” The club has been given an opportunity to further their development of juniors, with Teresa welcoming a number of new juniors into the club. “This year we have actually had a huge amount of junior players come out,” said Teresa. “I don’t know if that will make us any more successful at the moment, but the most important thing is that they get to play netball.” The future is bright for the Barossa District Netball Club—and provided the new players can combine with the club’s statesman, their seniors will be the team to beat this year.

“Angaston will certainly be a club to be watching this year as we hope to be able to build on growth from last year and guide as many teams as possible into the finals this year.” The seniors are shaping up nicely as well, with two particular inclusions intriguing the president. “As most people will be aware by now we have been very fortunate to secure the very talented LeeAnne Cummins as our Senior One coach. She brings with her not only her vast experience of coaching State and local sides, also the ability and knowledge to be able to upskill our already strong team of coaches throughout the club. “A young rising star to watch is Emma Keys who has rightfully been promoted to our senior one and two squad from Inters. “Emma certainly shows a great amount of promise as a netballer and has a great ‘can do’ attitude whilst showing great sportsmanship out on the court.” With the club all set for the upcoming season, Melanie is proud of the family environment the club has set up and has no intentions of leaving anytime soon. “2016 is an extremely exciting year for us at Angaston Netball Club … and I personally wouldn’t want to be a part of any other club. “Let’s go Panthers.”

The teams Gawler Central have produced are usually competitive, regardless of the situation – and expect no different this year. This is the view of Gawler Central president, Leanne Songer, who says all teams are filled and raring to go for season 2016. With the success of the club’s junior development evident through the premierships the intermediate one and two teams achieved, expect a boost of youth within the senior divisions. The president credits their growth of future netballers to their dedication to the lower divisions. “We spend time with them and try to obviously encourage the younger ones to not only play when they are young, but to continue playing into seniors,” said Ms Songer. Senior one coach, Kelly Assender alerted to two particular players who have been promoted from the intermediates and earnt selection within the senior one and two squads. “Morgan Earl and Maddie Nicholls are both up and coming for the club and I think they are ready for it (senior action),” said Kelly Assender. “I would like to hope that they can improve their netball - being involved in the higher level.” The team has lost a couple of players in Jodie Rich and Claire O’Reilly, who have returned to their previous teams. But a handful of players have returned to the club, with centre, Jade Pfitzner and Michelle Kelsey both back from pregnancy. Kelly Assender sees Jade and Michelle once again joining the ranks of fellow leaders, Ali Gee and Renee Souter. “They have been around the club and are the heart and soul of it,” said the president.

“They are natural leaders on and off the court and are important to me in relation to making sure everyone feels welcome.” Krystal Butler will also be a handy return in mid-court after a few years away from the team. The coach has pulled a few stings and recruited a familiar face of her own in wing defender, Jessica Holz. “Jess comes from the Matrics (Netball Club), which we were involved in when I was coaching in the Premier League with the Matrics a few years back,” said Kelly. She believes Jessica will not only bring her skills to the table, but also the element of surprise. “I think bringing any new player into a team is going to take a few people by surprise and I think other clubs will be a bit similar because they are a bit unknown,” said Kelly. “When you play country, you are playing the same people every year, so people work out the strengths and weaknesses of teams. “So I think Jess coming into our club will be a good thing from a defensive point of view because she’s a little bit of an unknown out here.” She realises the talent amongst the group, but understands the chemistry required within a team—hence a strong focus on team unity during the pre-season. “I think we have a bunch of individually talented people, but it’s the cohesion on court which is essential, both on and off the court when playing country netball,” said the coach. “So getting the correct mix of players is really important, so we are all about making sure we take care of the unit and work together as a unit this year and enjoy our netball.” Kelly is of the hope her team will improve on last year and go one step further into the finals.

Netball & Hockey Kapunda Netball Club (KNC) have recorded an increase in their juniors and seniors team with lots of players signing up for the season. Already, the club added an extra team to the juniors side to accommodate all of the new children and a Senior 7 team was added to the seniors grade. KNC president, Valerie Menzel, said that the teams are looking competitive this

year and seem to be stronger than last season. Currently, the club is organising fundraising to go towards new netball equipment for the players to be able to utilise and are focusing on junior development. The KNC committee has had changes with Sarah Johnson stepping down to vice-president after becoming the president of the Barossa, Light and Gawler Netball Association.

Intensity lifts at Freeling Netball Club Freeling Netball Club is excited for the 2016 season with a new president, Nicole Muster. The former Club secretary has taken over the presidential reigns from Toni Oliver who stepped down after four years. “Toni is still involved on our committee and has a keen interest to integrate procedures and guidelines from the STAR club framework into our club, stepping down from President will allow this to happen,” said Nicole. Tam Erskine has been appointed secretary this year and together, the committee are pleased to be witnessing a new level of intensity within the Club. “Freeling’s focus is to create a positive playing atmosphere that encourages all teams to reach their highest ability - and to ultimately achieve success in finals,” said Nicole. “It’s great to see so many new and returning faces around the club this year both on and off the court.” From young netballers playing at 8.30 in the morning, right through to the last game of the day, Nicole said all players and volunteers, as well as their families, are important to the success of the Club. “Filling all grades with the exception

of a second junior team is a great achievement for the town. “We have fantastic numbers across the club this season, whilst this is very much positive, it has taken longer than anticipated to settle into teams to get the balance of players right, especially in our junior sides.” Nicole said Senior 1 coach, Susan O’Brien has put a lot of work into the pre-season regime which has filtered through all senior levels. “The hard work of our players and coaches that has been put in to the preseason is paying off. “The girls have been busy with trips to snakepit, Starplex, trial matches as well as many training sessions at Freeling. The intensity is a solid mix of wanting to be playing finals netball, with team mates who are putting in the hard work to make sure FNC achieve this - its a bonus that great friendships are being formed amongst this too as it helps tighten the club,” said Nicole.

looking strong on paper and new coach Danni Casey will be keen to get them firing on the field just as strongly. Both coaches hope to build on good performances last year. The B Women also have a new coach in Craig Wayling and will be looking to retain the form that saw them finish minor premiers in 2015. Tanunda will have two B Men’s teams again this year. The White team, led by playing coach Graeme Sexton, will want to make it two in a row. The Black team will again be led by playing coach Trev Hongell and will certainly look to be a serious contender for premiership glory. The now officially affiliated club Clare United is looking forward for the coming season, fielding senior teams in A Men and B Women grades. There are a number of players new to both their teams from last season. However, they will miss two of their top women’s players, Etzbez Donato and Sophie Haines, who have been released to play A grade with Gawler to enable their future growth and development as players. These two are ones to watch as they work towards their future goals of state representation.

The Barossa Valley Hockey Association’s 2016 season is about to hit off. The season will look a little different with the introduction of a Joey’s grade for the youngest and newest players from five years of age. There are also changes as to which clubs are competing in which grades. A grade men’s competition has the loss of Trinity to the B grade, where they will replace Clare and Districts who are not fielding a team in that grade this year. B grade men’s competition will also be bolstered by the addition of a new Gawler Strikers team. The women’s grades remain unchanged. AM United is looking forward to a solid season on the seniors front, with an extremely strong A Men’s side accompanied by nearly enough blokes to field two B-Men’s teams. Long-time club stalwart, Daniel Wall, accompanied by the switched-on Katy Fechner, are making sure the AM United Men will be a serious threat again after being a serious contender for a vast majority of the 2015 season. Their senior Women, while at time of print are still in search of a coach, have been training hard with the men during the pre-season. As they have over the last 15 years, both the A Women and B Women will be around the mark and definitely in contention come September. In the junior grades AM United may struggle a little with the older grades (U15-U18), but the talent that is there is a real positive for the future of the club. Hookin2Hockey grades are looking very good with numbers, and having a slightly shorter season will help bring out their best. Gawler Strikers are fired up for the 2016 season with training well underway. A Men are back to finish what they started last year when they found themselves, unexpectedly perhaps, in the Grand Final. With the introduction of some new players to the mix and Matt Kingsmill staying at the helm as coach a repeat performance, with maybe an even better result, is on the cards. A Women are keen to make it three in a row with some new players adding more depth to an already talented team, as well as the appointment of a new coach in Jordan Rhind. Their B Women are looking to build on last season, with some fresh faces in the team this year and the experienced Sue Cruickshank leading the team once more. For the second year in a row the season brings a new team to Gawler with the introduction this year of a B men’s team under the guidance of Adam Cruickshank. With a senior team in each grade, Gawler is hopeful this will attract juniors to the club and make them stronger in the future. Tanunda Hockey Club will again be represented across all ages and genders and have entered at least one team in every grade. Experienced coaches have been appointed to all junior teams and, with quite a few of their juniors having taken part in the off season Developing Athlete Program, they are keen to get the season underway. Tanunda’s A Women this year will look a bit different due to player ins and outs and also a change at the helm as Nick Dry makes a return to coaching. The A Men are

New look for hockey this season Continued from Page 13 Clare United’s Under 18 team will be in their new tops of the traditional Springstown colours of navy and gold side stripes. This team has only lost three players from last year and is expected to gel well as a team right from the start. Joining them in the junior ranks, Clare United has formed a new Under 15 team to enter the competition and hope to have them hit the ground running hard. This team will have a mix of players form across the district from Balaklava, Clare and Burra and will wear the traditional Clare and Districts colours of gold and black. There is stability in the senior ranks at Nuriootpa Hockey Club with both Marty Gallasch (A Men) and Andy Milne (A Women) continuing as coaches in 2016. New faces and returning players have combined well

in a pre-season full of promise. The A Men are aiming for a third straight flag, and their 13th in the past 14 years, in what will be a highly competitive competition. The return of former junior, Michael Hannay along with the up-andcoming talent pool will add to the depth of the squad. Dedication on the track ensures this team can improve again and will be ready for the challenges that lie ahead. The evolution of their A Women will continue as they look to build on a Preliminary Final finish in 2015. New ideas have the team shaping up nicely and if the experienced players can combine with the emerging young talent, the sky is the limit for this group. Nuriootpa will once again field a team in the B Women, two sides in the B Men, as well as fielding teams in all junior grades and running Hookin2Hockey programs for their stars of the future.

Barossa United takes soccer to the next level The formation of the Barossa’s first women’s soccer team has created opportunities for those who would normally withdraw from the sport. Under the auspices of the Barossa United Soccer Club, the first women’s soccer team in 10 years has been formed for the upcoming season. Chris Smith, coach, said there were a lot of girls playing junior soccer, in mixed teams, up until the age of 17 before withdrawing from the sport altogether. “We always found as they get older we tend to lose the girls and keep the boys and there is more boys in the team,” said Chris. “There were a number of girls last year who expressed they wanted to play soccer so we looked into what the options were.” While the original plans fell through, Chris together with Paul Wilkins, were successful in securing a place in Football Federation SA league with the side featuring in division five with most matches being played throughout the northern suburbs. The interest has been strong with a number of former female soccer players returning to the sport, with the team’s age group spanning from 13 to women in their 40s. “We wanted to give past, present and new players an opportunity to play soccer that’s local and enhances their lifestyles while reinforcing their connection to the club,” said Chris. Practice matches have already shown the depth of interest shown from supporters and a strong relationship with the Barossa United Soccer Club has resulted in the grounds to be used by the women’s team and a smooth transition to be experienced. “If we get the numbers we will grow it,” said Paul. “It’s pleasing in the last month the people that have come out of the woodwork and a number of the girls who were in Under 15s last year and were talking about not playing, now have a side. “We have seen the improvement already (of these girls) and the camaraderie of the girls has gone up a notch.” For Nina Sims progressing from the mixed team into the women’s side has allowed her to pursue the sport. She said the boys in the side had “become a lot stronger” and she has welcomed the opportunity to use her skills more in the women’s side. Paul and Chris are looking forward to the season ahead, saying there is huge benefits to playing team sports as they work towards participation rather than competitiveness.

GAME ON! Barossa Rams Rugby Union Club - 2016 Rugby & Soccer

The Barossa Rams have been preparing for the new season by training Tuesday and Thursday nights since mid-January, with the aim to surpass their runner-up in the 2015 season. The Rams have retained most of their senior squad from last year, along with new players and the return of other players from injury or work commitments, the Rams are aiming to field two senior teams this season. With a 4th Grade and 3rd Grade side, Nigel Peters (head coach) and Vili Kamikamica (assistant coach) believe that the player competition for places into the higher grade will fan the enthusiasm of the players wanting to compete at a higher level. Despite strong performances over the last few seasons, the Rams’ application to move into the more competitive 2nd grade was disallowed by SARU, the state rugby governing body, due to complications with the draw. The Rams have taken the view that they will dominate 3rd grade and give the Rugby competition no choice but to include them into 2nd grade for the 2017 season. Junior development at the Rams is looking better than ever this season, as they continue to experience strong numbers in all grades which are supported by fantastic parent

coaches and support staff. Again this year, the Junior teams will be filled from Under 7’s to Under 12’s for boys and girls and Under 14’s and 16’s for boys. Last season and again the first few months of the New Year, many of the Barossa Rams Junior members represent the state of South Australia in a number of National Rugby events. In February the Under 15’s and Under 17’s Junior Falcons competed for the Junior Gold Cup which South Australia Under 15’s defeated Hunter from New South Wales 32-24 to win the Cup for the very first time ever. The game of rugby has playing positions for all body shapes and types – from those too short for netball or basketball but can duck and weave; to the stronger but less agile of those who can make up the driving forwards with strength and control. The Barossa Rams continue their emphasis on a family friendly, little “United Nations” environment and successful club atmosphere. The Rams will be away for round one on April 23. Contacts for the Barossa Rugby Club are Head Coach, Nigel Peters 0438 854 673 and Junior Co-ordinator, Mel Morrison 0456 062 468. Go Rams!

New players to the Barossa Rams, Shaun Barclay and James Nankivell have joined seasoned players, James Hillcoat and Tim Pelquest-Hunt for the 2016 rugby season.

Record numbers for junior soccer to provide a positive and encouraging environment for our players so that they can achieve to the best of their ability in supportive team environment. “We are an entry level soccer club open to children of all ability, boys and girls equally. We perform strongly in the competition for the Dennis Moore trophy with three wins in the last 10 years. “This is a trophy voted on by the referees association and is awarded to the club providing the best environment showcasing sporting values of fair play.” This year’s most exciting development is the creation of a women’s team linked to the club to provide a pathway for female players to continue playing soccer past the junior grades. This year and next will be one of consolidation as players adjust to the growth over the last two years with a desire to lift sponsorship levels and develop club facilities. Ultimately, it is fantastic to see soccer growing strongly with a club representing all of the Barossa, open to boys and girls of all ages and ability, that values sportsmanship and fair play.

President’s Message Welcome to all sponsors, volunteers, officials and players to the start of the 2016 Barossa, Light and Gawler Football Association football season. This year promises to again be a fantastic season in all grades. Welcome to the ru ning of the Association to our new Secretary, Louise Stone, while Zenon [ZOK] Okunieff will continue to handle football registrations and to all football day operations. We also have a new Junior Football Officer, Wayne Sheahan, while Simon Carpenter has moved to the role of Vice President. The RSL in our towns have joined

together to sponsor Junior Football. The Board of Directors is pleased to announce that Ian Dew will take over as Umpires’ Coach in 2016, with Sara Jameson continuing as Junior Coach. We wish them both well and are sure they will continue the work done over the last few years by Carl Whitaker. I appeal to all players, coaches and supporters of football in the BL&G to respect the umpires as they go about their thankless task every Friday night and Saturday. This year the BL&G will compete in the SA Country Championships as part of the Central Zone at Port Lincoln on July 9-10. It is particularly pleasing to see

so many BL&G players representing Central District in all grades of the SANFL and it demonstrates that the BL&G’s junior programme is going from strength to strength, especially with some players currently playing AFL. Our thanks to Kris Grant and the CDFC Board for their continued support. The drugs issue is always at our doorstep, so the BL&G has budgeted to investigate a way to do our own drug testing as the SANFL have not finished formulating a policy. I would like to congratulate Sara Johnson on becoming the new president of the BL&G Netball Association and look forward in working together for the good of both sports.

I would like to thank Bridey Lewis for her excellent work over the last few years and wish her well in the future. I extend the Board’s thanks to the countless volunteers that give many hours of their free time each year to ensure that their clubs continue to grow and prosper. Good luck to all football and netball teams for season 2016.

Mick Brien, President, BL&G Football Association.

Gareth Prothero has recently been appointed President of the Barossa Light and Gawler Umpire’s Association, starting with the 2016 season. Gareth became a committee member two years ago and through the knowledge and leadership of past President, Martin Kennedy and other committee members, gained great insights into the league. As a result of his experience and insight, Gareth was subsequently voted as Vice President in 2015 and President in 2016. When the position became vacant in 2016 due to Martin’s retirement from the committee, Gareth jumped at the opportunity and was successfully voted in. “This is my first time as president on any committee, I will embrace the position and endeavour to continually grow in the knowledge of it’s workings,” said Gareth. “I see the position more as a figure head in a democratic team.” “We are all equal and all striving for the same goals for the Barossa, Light and Gawler Umpire’s Association.” For the 2016 season, Gareth hopes to continue fostering a positive, open working relationship between umpires, clubs and the association. Gareth says the association has also welcomed the introduction of new senior panel coach, Ian Dew. At the end of the 2015 season long standing umpire and head coach, Carl Whittaker, stood down after many years of devoted service. After an extensive recruitment process, including applications and interviews, Ian was chosen as new head coach. “Ian brings a wealth of football knowledge and experience to the umpires,” said Gareth. Gareth believes Ian has hit the ground running by attending numerous seminars

and delegate meetings well before pre umpires to assist people of all different season. ages and abilities.” Pre season has been running for five “That’s the beauty of the Barossa, Light weeks now and Ian has already introduced and Gawler umpire’s. We are all there for new training drills that have challenged the same goal, we are a family and we the umpires, whilst incorporating fun help each other.” activities to improve fitness and team bonding. “Ian’s role as senior panel coach isn’t just about physical fitness and skills for match day, but also keeping umpires up to date with rules, procedures and practices,” said Gareth. “The umpire’s main goal for the season is to provide a consistent standard of umpiring, based on knowledge and fitness.” As president, Gareth believes that the Barossa, Light and Gawler Umpire’s Association are always looking for new umpires, past players, newcomers and umpires from other leagues. “Umpiring is for both males and females, but I’m proud to say our female numbers are increasing,” he said. The 2016 season has started showing some good numbers, however Gareth says they are always looking for that player who is undecided about playing one more season but still wants to be involved. Gareth, Ian and the rest of the committee believe umpiring is a great way to get fit, earn some cash and stay involved with the grass roots of football. “It’s the best seat in the house we say,” said Gareth. Ian Dew, the newly appointed senior panel “No experience is necessary head coach for Barossa, Light and Gawler as we have a dedicated group of Umpire’s Association.

Angaston Football Club has welcomed new coaches to the helm across all Saturday teams, including A-Grade coach, Paul Sherwood. Paul made a name for himself in the SANFL, becoming an integral part of Glenelg’s defence in his 190 games at full back – though his coaching credentials are arguably as impressive. He has excelled in coaching since his retirement from SANFL – including back-to-back premierships coaching the Westminster Football Club A-Grade team and coaching within the under 18’s state representative ranks. Angaston Football President, Keith Jamieson can vision the elusive goal of playing finals finally being realised after an absence of five years. “We have been round the mark the last couple of years, so we would like to go that one step further,” said Keith. “Playing finals is the goal for this season and then we’d like to obviously go further. But the first instance for us is to make finals in seniors.” The club will have to achieve this without A-Grade regulars forward, Thomas Flight and ruckman, Matthew Blenkiron, who have had clearances approved to enter the SANFL system. Midfielder, Daniel Williamson leaves for Hope Valley, while defender, Tyson Gordon is off to South Mildura and Steve Rusca to Min/Man in the North Eastern Football League.

The president is also sad to announce the indefinite loss of last year’s captain, Greg Bain due to health concerns. “Greg Bain is not playing this year because of concussion issues. So he will take this year off, if not more, until he feels more confident,” said Keith. The club may have managed to fill these holes with recruits, including SANFL Glenelg reserves player, Tylah Saunders; forward, Alexander Brackstone (Kilburn Football Club) and Derek Clarke (Southern Eagles). Keith has been impressed with the new coach, who wasted no time in preparing the team for the upcoming season. With training beginning in November, the president is pleased with the attendance and says the players seem to be benefitting as they look fitter and stronger. He also singled out Blake Homes and Jack Miles as players setting the example on the training track and believes Jack, along with fellow local, Jack Ryan, have the capacity to have a big influence on the competition. Much of the team’s success will rely on the continuation of form from key players—forward Andrew Pech, and backman James Parker. If Coach Sherwood is able to get this team to click out on the field, a strong tilt at finals will be imminent.

When asked what the goal for his team was this year, Freeling Football Club senior coach Beau Jarman uttered only one word - “Finals”. After finishing one spot outside the finals in 2015 (fifth) to miss finals for an eighth straight season, Beau has realised something has to change. So this year Beau, in his second full year as A-Grade coach, is warning the public to expect a new game style from the Freeling Football Club’s A-grade. “The way we are running the footy is obviously going to be different to what people have been used to seeing Freeling footy be like in the past,” said the A-grade coach. “We are just looking to be a little bit more attacking, play a quicker brand of footy. “Something that is going to be exciting and will help us or give us more chances at scoring.” Injuries cruelled the team’s season last year and the coach is taking the precautions necessary to avoid a repeat in 2016. “We are just trying to look after the boys this year, especially our senior boys. We will just monitor those and go about it a little bit differently,” said the senior coach. While the club traditionally does not like to indulge information regarding the changes in personnel, Beau has indicated the squad he has is capable of making finals. “We have taken a few hits, but we have also picked up some pretty good talent as well,” said Beau. “We have a pretty strong belief with who we have and what we can do. We believe we can achieve some sort of success this year”. Based on clearances currently lodged, the losses for the club include Hayden Robinson, Joshua Robinson, Tyson Barnes, Dan Horsnell, Matthew Camplin, Ben Darwin, Adam Langford and Todd Stanton. Though, the clearances also have a few new additions, most of whom have played division one in the Adelaide Football League – John Boxer, Garth

Van Ristell (pending clearance) and Brady Scott (pending clearance). The coach will be relying on many of the local boys “to take their games to another level” and believes they have showed signs on the training track already. “I would say there is going to be a lot of improvement from our local senior boys, who have really stepped up,” said Beau. “Jacob Wright, one of our locals – he has been around forever and will be carrying a different role this year. “But he and Lachie (Lachlan) Heinrich have been training hard and going well.” The loss of players has opened up positions for some of the exciting prospects, such as Connor Reid and Corey Coleman, to get an opportunity. Jarman is comfortable with the supportive environment captain Travis Muster and co. has created amongst the group. “He (Muster) is a great leader, along with guys like Lachie (Lachlan Heinrich), Jacob Wright, Peter Dempsey, Ryan Jarman, Joel Vaneveld – we are just looking at spreading the load,” said Beau. “These senior boys will help Travy (Travis) and myself out, and really take on that role and help develop the young lads around them too.”

Captain, Travis Muster is part of a strong Freeling leadership team.

Captain Schiller to lead Tanunda’s local products to finals By Cohen Mortimer

New recruits, Ben Gordon and Angus Kurtze with Under 17’s player, Ben Biagi, who is looking for more games in A-Grade this season and Sam Brooks who has returned to Tanunda after a stint with Central District.

Newly appointed captain, Ben Schiller will lead a new look Tanunda outfit in their quest for September action in 2016. Tanunda’s senior coach, Craig Griffiths believes Ben, a thirdgeneration Magpies footballer, has the qualities, passion and support to achieve success for many years. “His attitude is excellent, he displays good leadership qualities, he relates well with the playing group and he is very enthusiastic about the club as a whole,” said Craig. “Nick Smith, who has been captain for the last few years, and the more experienced group are there to support Ben. “We are really excited for the future of the club for the next couple of years with Ben growing in that role.” The Tanunda Football Club has lost important members from their 2015 squad, including Dale Payne, Troy Cowland, Scott Wendelborn and Ethan Moore. However, the team has also welcomed back a handful of former players such as Mathew Westhoff, Dion Dutschke, Matt Grocke, AJ Prior and the Snowden brothers, Luke and Jake. The move from the committee to retrieve local players is one of the many steps the club is taking towards regenerating their successful 4-peat in 2008-11. The Tanunda Football Club President, Dan Eggleton, says the club is “keen on developing our local junior talent pool” in hope of “bringing up a club where we get back to winning the flags with nearly all local boys.

“We believe we have some exceptional kids that are coming through right down into our non-competition grades,” said Dan. “Developing a platform that will assist them comfortably in the ability to grow amongst our football community in Tanunda and be proud to be associated with us is our goal.” The return of young guns, Dion Dutschke and Sam Brookes, who have been through the Central District system, add to the youthful brigade of Parker Neldner, Gareth Gann, Ben Schiller and Lachlan Kemp. Craig Griffiths has cited last year’s best and fairest winner, midfielder Leigh Westhoff; and goal kicker Ben Britton as players impressing, leading into the season opener against South Gawler. But much of the talk surrounds four of their recruits in Luke Snowden, Ben Gordon, Nathan Petersen-Gray and Angus Kurtze and for good reason. Returning utility, Luke Snowden is a versatile player, with the ability to play forward or back—and has been terrific on the training track from all reports. Ben Gordon and Nathan PetersenGray, who have been playing their footy in the Riverland for Loxton, will add firepower up forward and midfield grit respectively. Perhaps their biggest recruit, both physically and beneficially, is former Sturt Ruckman, Angus Kurtze – who will add strength to the team around the ground and at stoppages. With these “points players” added to the squad, both President and Coach hope this team can not only improve on last year, but make an impact come finals.

The Nuriootpa Rover Football Club (NRFC) has had big changes over the pre-season, but the boys are ready to step up to the field and give their best. Chris Linke, NRFC president, said that the coaches and players have done really well handling the pre-season after a turmoil offseason with coach changes and player losses. “As far as the coaches are concerned, they have been fantastic… really stepped up. We couldn’t ask anymore of them, but it has been challenging,” said Chris. “I am looking forward to seeing where we are at, a lot of clubs have done some big recruiting. I think we will be okay, I am looking forward to a few of the younger ones stepping up.” The A-grade side were shocked when Darren Reeves, their premiership coach, decided to leave the club for the Central Districts Under 18 side. The NRFC were understanding of Darren’s aspirations to go further in football and replaced him was Henry Slattery, previous Essendon footballer and NRFC premiership A-grade player. The club, however, could not see the possible outcome of the Essendon drug doping scandal that would leave Henry unable to play or coach until his suspension finished later this year. With two coaches gone, the club had a review of who would be best for the position. The club stands by Henry, who wishes to pick up the top coaching position when his suspension finishes, so the NRFC appointed Allan Norton as the interim coach. Allan is a member of the club committee and has coached junior football. He said taking up A-grade coaching was something he hadn’t planned to do for another few years. “Even though I played a fair bit of footy, it was something I may have done one day but it was a little bit earlier than expected. I took the job on proviso that Henry would take over at the end of the year,” said Allan. “It’s still new to me, so it will take a while to get used to. Just as the players are taking a while to

adjust to me… It’s been messy, but we just have to make the best of a bad situation. “The premiership last year was fantastic, they thoroughly deserved it and worked really hard for it. It’s another ball game this year. The boys are looking good.” The A-grade side has lost their premiership best and fairest player, Jack Juniper, along with Mark Rumbelow, who has moved onto Central Districts, and Henry Slattery with his suspension. Daniel Burgess has moved onto play at the Eudunda/ Robertstown Football Club and Tim Demasi is still unsure whether he will play this season at NRFC. Chris Linke, NRFC president, said that the A grade side will be relying on their younger legs of the team to step up this year. B grade players, Jackson Jaensch, Jordan Robertson, Sam Schmaal, Charles Edwards and Arlon Hall, will be more likely to have a bigger role to play in the A-grade side. Other new team additions include Chris Gregory, Dillon Michael and Dillon Campbell. Allan said, “There will be a few new faces and we won’t be as big and strong up forward as we were last year, but hopefully with a few of these younger, quicker blokes, we will be able to fill the void to somewhat. “It is not going to be the same and it never is year to year. We will be a slightly different looking side, so we will see what happens.” Allan also believes the reserves are looking reasonably strong and both the Under 17’s and Under 16’s are quite competitive sides. The club are confident in a strong position this season in all four grades. When asked about the NRFC A-grade side aiming for a back to back premiership, Chris said, “If you don’t aim for it, then you are in the wrong business. If it happens, it happens. We have had good preparation and the players are all fit.”

Pre-season started early for Bulldogs After kicking off back in early November, 2015 the Barossa District Football Club players are really showing the positive effects of a solid and early start to the 2016 season. Todd Miles and Alan Obst are both leading by example and their knowledge and physical presence will be a massive boost for the young pups this year. Todd has shown great leadership with the style of play the club wants implemented and Alan has been gruelling on the boys in the physical department - a great combination which the players have responded to well. Club members wish them both luck as they take up the challenge of senior coaching. This season the club welcomes some new faces and some old ones back to the kennel also.

Four time club champion and four time premiership player, Matt Stelzer has come home. Matt will play a vital role this season and his experience will be great for the young lads stepping into senior footy for the first time. Another premiership player who has trained the track down since the first night is Glenn Chamberlain. The big man will be a handy inclusion and from close up he still has that glint in his eye which will have other teams a little nervous at times. Also in the big man department, returning form sightseeing around the world who will be vital cog in the team this year is Giles O’Driscoll. A premiership player who can play either

end of the ground and who is very skilful look out other teams. Nathan Eames returns this year from injury and has looked impressive on the track so far-great clubman and premiership player whose big game record speaks for itself. And finally a talented local who has been at Central District for the last five years will finally don the Barossa jumper at senior level welcome home Ben Cummings. All are excited to see the man who has muscles like Conan the barbarian roam the Williamstown Oval this year. Some recruits to the club that have impressed so far include Michael Bratton and Darren Shillabeer. Both arrive at the kennel with plenty of football experience and the club is looking

forward to watching ‘Brats’ roam around the midfield and big ‘Shilla’ strut his stuff up forward. The Barossa District Bulldogs had trial games against Moonta at Moonta and then Balaklava at Williamstown Oval last weekend. The club is looking for volunteers to help fill some positions around the club: Trainers, bar manager and treasurer (currently filled in the interim). Without the help of the club’s volunteers, there would not be the club there is. Please let officials know if you can help in some way.
