the Restaurant & Catering Awards, will be preparing a selection of traditional curries at Kellermeister Wines on Friday evening. The Barossa Gourmet stalwarts including Gomersal, Whistler, Seppeltsfield and Creed Wines will be joined by newcomers Thorn Clarke and Arlequin Wines. Responsible consumption of alcohol and a strong commitment to the safety of event patrons has resulted in the continuation of the Designated Driver programme and the shuttle bus service over both days. Designated Drivers register at a participating winery, receive a pack and can then take advantage of free water, soft-drink, tea or coffee. The LinkSA shuttle bus stops at designated pick-up points throughout the Barossa and provides a cost effective means of transportation for those that can’t decide on a Designated Driver. Look out for the nab volunteers selling lottery tickets over the Gourmet Weekend. Full proceeds from the lottery will support the work of the Royal Society for the Blind. There are great prizes to be won including 12 dozen premium Barossa wines donated by the participating wineries.

Arlequin Wines at Barossa Chateau for Barossa Gourmet Arlequin is the French translation of ‘Arlecchino’, a character from the 16th century ‘Commedia dell Arte’ (Comedy of Art). Arlequin Wines present such qualities and colour to its customers and partners all around the world. The character of Arlequin in the 16th Century Italian ‘Commedie dell Arte’, was one of great colour and exuberance, often engaging with the audience and inviting them to be part of the festivities. His brightly coloured costume, detailed in striking triangles and his ability to improvise in any given scene, made him one of history’s fondest characters. Carnevale is the theme that Arlequin will recreate here at Barossa Chateau for Gourmet Weekend and helping them create that are the magnificent Cirkidz.
Cirkidz was founded in 1986 by Tony Hannan and Michael Lester as a workshop project to provide alternative opportunities for recreation for disadvantaged young people in Adelaide’s industrial inner-western suburbs. They believed that circus skills training is an invaluable way to support social, physical, and creative development in children and young people. Cirkidz has evolved over the years and broadened its range of activities. Today, it is the pre-eminent circus training centre in South Australia. The Circus School programme welcomes over 250 young people every week, ranging in age from 2½ right through to teenagers and adults. They run Circus Arts Workshop Programmes for schools, community groups and corporate clients all over South Australia, and the Performing Troupe is well-known in the Adelaide DH2231 arts community for its high-quality roving and staged performances at festivals, events and in-theatre seasons. They will be performing several 30 minute roving stints throughout the weekend encouraging children and

families to be involved in the festivities. 50 In The City will also be performing playing rock to jazz. The band consists of Will Raftery, 16, as lead guitar/ acoustic guitar/vocals; Louis Cann, 15, bass guitar/double bass/vocal; Sami Butler, 17, on drums. Will Raftery was asked to form a rock band for a charity gig in September 2011. He asked his longtime friends Sami Butler and Louis Cann to join him. Their talents melded instantly and 50 In The City was formed. They have since taken their band very seriously, rehearse and gig regularly and in just a few months have stunned crowds at various city festivals and functions. MusicSA recently invited them to perform on the main stage at the Clipsal 500 in The Bands on Track lunch time concert. The band started with covers and soon added original material to their rapidly growing set list. They now have a polished set that includes their own material, classic rock and obscure covers. Food will be supplied by Lyndoch Hill Restaurant including some fabulous Carnevale themed dishes that will inspire and excite all the senses.

Food by Semaphore Pantry Music by ‘Cousin Leonard’ and accompanied by Cloudy & Gian Barossa Police Senior Sergeant Martin Kennedy said officers will be out in force over the Gourmet Weekend. As venues and locals gear up for the upcoming Gourmet Weekend, so too are police. Patrols will be maximised over the weekend with local officers being joined by Adelaide and Barossa highway patrols. According to Senior Sergeant Martin Kennedy of Barossa Police, past events have shown officers deal with behavioural issues more than drink driving. “We will still be placing significant attention on detecting and deterring drink drivers,” said Snr. Sgt. Kennedy. “But that is not the only thing in the spotlight over the weekend. “The behaviour of patrons
at the various venues and ensuring the responsible service of alcohol will also be monitored over the two days.” While encouraging locals to have a good time, Snr. Sgt. Kennedy said it is important for people to take advantage of the designated driver programme and the shuttle bus service. Snr. Sgt. Kennedy indicated licensing enforcement branch members would again be visiting Gourmet Weekend venues to monitor compliance with all aspects of licensing conditions. “Licensees have to be vigilant,” he said. “We understand that people do move from place to place after consuming alcohol, but
every licensee needs to monitor who they allow into their venues and the level of sobriety of their patrons.” Snr. Sgt. Kennedy said Gourmet Weekend behaviour has improved over the past few years and it has become a quality weekend. “There’s nothing to stop the community enjoying the great food and wine in moderation and still having a great time,” said Snr. Sgt. Kennedy. Designated drivers this weekend can register at participating wineries and receive a free bottle of water, free tea, coffee and soft drinks. The shuttle bus service is available both days with multiple pick-up and drop off points throughout the Barossa.
