25Years of Grant Burge Wines A few words from Grant Burge… How time flies, it seems like yesterday that Helen and I took a big step and established Grant Burge Wines in the heart of the Barossa Valley. I am a romantic at heart and have a real sense of my family history, of my father and grandfather and what they achieved. It was important for me to continue this tradition in the Barossa and I am pleased that the sixth generation has also come on board. Helen and I could not have achieved the success we have had over the years without the support of the many growers, suppliers, retailers, distributors, consumers and most importantly our employees within the Barossa, Australia and now overseas. We are truly proud of our achievements and thank every one of you who has contributed to helping us achieve 25 years of business.

Grant Burge: “This business is in my blood. I have a strong winemaking heritage and I want to hand down my knowledge. I believe in preserving and maintaining our Barossa legacy and tradition to make sure future winemakers understand how to make the very best wines from this unique region.”

Cheers! To the next 25 years and beyond.

25Years of Grant Burge Wines

Grant Burge – Australian Vigneron The Grant Burge Wines story started in March 1855, when English tailor John Burge immigrated to the Barossa in South Australia from Hillcot, near Pewsey in Wiltshire, England with his wife Eliza and their two sons, Meshach and Henry. The Barossa had been colonised by farmers from England in 1842 and Silesia (Prussia) and in its second decade of white settlement, its 20,000 acres of fertile soils and its Mediterranean climate of

Meshach Burge

warm, dry summers and cold, wet winters were proving to be perfect for horticulture and viticulture. John worked as a Winemaker at Hillside Vineyards and his love of viticulture was passed onto his son Meshach who continued the tradition, making his first wine in 1865 whilst at the same time becoming a prominent community leader. He married Emma Springbett in 1883 and they had eight children. The Burge winemaking journey started when Meshach and Emma’s first-born son, Percival established the family’s Wilsford Winery near Lyndoch in 1928. After the Second World War, the enterprise was expanded by Grant’s father Colin and in 1953 his Uncle Noel joined the business. Wilsford Winery quickly became known for its aged fortifieds. It was in the Wilsford winery that Grant learnt that as a fifth generation Burge, wine was flowing through his veins. “I grew up loving the fertility and green abundance of the family vineyards, the excitement of the annual vintage when the grapes were crushed and fermented by cellar workers who were carrying on century old traditions, and then the rich aromas of the fortified casks in the old Wilsford cellars,” Grant said. Undertaking his winemaking apprenticeship in other South Australian regions during the 1970s, Grant soon showed a natural ability to create red and white wines with great depth of flavour and longevity. So when the old Krondorf winery in the Barossa came on the market he couldn’t resist the challenge and purchased it with a colleague Ian Wilson and four Adelaide businessmen. It was to be the first of many entrepreneurial moves by this visionary Australian winemaker that paid off. The duo won their first Jimmy Watson Trophy – Australia’s most prestigious wine award – with a 1979 Cabernet Sauvignon. Krondorf rapidly became a respected premium wine brand name and in 1985, was acquired by Mildara in a hostile take-over.

Grant pruning his Krondorf vineyard in 1990. In 1988, with his wife Helen, Grant opened his eponymously named business, Grant Burge Wines, just down the road from Krondorf. “I am a romantic, and I have a real sense of my family history, of my father and grandfather and great-grandfather, and what they achieved,” Grant said. “So I felt the decision to start my own winery was my destiny to cement once and for all the connection between the Burge name and Australian winemaking that my great-grandfather Meshach had started.” Choosing the Barossa was also no accident. “My other passionate belief was that the Barossa deserved to be recognised as one of the greatest wine regions in the world and I wanted to be a significant part of its future,” he said. “There are few other regions in the world even in Europe, that have such treasure troves of old pre-phylloxera vines which produce wines with such amazing colour, flavour and intensity. “We also have an unbroken lineage of more than 170 years of viticulture, winemaking and intellectual property which can’t be replicated.”

As fate or luck or good planning had it, the next 10 years were to be the golden era for Australian wine internationally. The fruit driven styles of Shiraz, Grenache and Cabernet from the Barossa provided a contrast with Old World French and Italian reds, and Grant Burge Wines was one of the leaders. “Suddenly Helen and I were spending as much time in London, Paris and Rome as we were in the winery in the Barossa,” Grant said. “We found that Europeans warmed to the relaxed way Australians do business and of course they had never tasted wines like ours.” Grant could also see that with the seemingly insatiable world demand for Barossa wine, supply would become the biggest challenge. So during the mid to late 1980s he strategically purchased many of the older, well-established Barossa vineyards that retiring growers were selling. “I had grown up with many of these growers and so it was an honour to purchase and sustain their vineyards – many of them over 100 years old. Some of our wines are now named after these families,” he said. Continued on page 5

25Years of Grant Burge Wines

Showcasing their award-winning Semillon in 1990.

The Burge winemaking journey “I strongly believe fine wines are born in the vineyard, the cradle of wine quality. With this in mind, I developed one of the most extensive networks of premium vineyards in Australia, strategically positioned throughout the Barossa region. I have carefully selected my vineyards for their suitability to the varieties we grow here.” Grant also developed his winemaking resources, purchasing the historic Illaparra

winery in Tanunda, which he turned into one of Australia’s finest red wine cellars as well as buying back his beloved Krondorf winery, which he used for white winemaking, particularly his famous Rieslings and Chardonnays. The final step towards the creation of a fully vertically integrated wine business was the establishment of his Australian and international sales division, working with some of the finest international distributors including Hatch Mansfield (UK), Bataillard AG (Switzerland), Schlumberger Vertriebsgesellschaft mbH & Co KG (Germany), Australian Fine Wines (Belgium), Trialto (Canada) and Enoteca (Japan). Despite his visionary business approach, throughout his two and half decades of

Grant and Helen in their Illaparra Maturation Centre in the late 1990s. growth, Grant said making fine wine has always come first. Grant believes if the right varieties are grown in the right soils and vines are managed to produce low to moderate yields, they will produce the premium quality fruit to make exceptional wines. “With the combination of the best terroirs, the best climate and the best winemaking techniques, the natural result is superior wine,” he says. “This business is in my blood. I have a strong winemaking heritage and I want to hand down my knowledge. I believe in preserving and maintaining our Barossa legacy and tradition to make sure future winemakers understand how to make the very best wines from this unique region.”

From his flagship Meshach Barossa Shiraz, named proudly after his great grandfather, and one of the most awarded wines in Australia, to his new cool climate range of Bordeaux-style varietals from his high altitude Corryton Park vineyard to his number one selling Australian sparkling Pinot Noir Chardonnay, Grant is obsessed with quality and consistency. It is not just Grant Burge table wine, which wins over wine judges from across the globe. His 150 year family fortified heritage still shines brightly and to prove it, a rare collection of tawny and muscat vintages have been recognised four times in the last decade at the Decanter World Wine Awards as International Fortified of The Year.

Meet the Winemakers David Horne, Sparkling and Fortified Winemaker

Craig Stansborough, Senior Winemaker

Senior Winemaker, Mr Craig Stansborough.

Craig Stansborough joined Grant Burge Wines in 1993 as Cellar Manager and was soon promoted to Assistant Winemaker in 1994, Winemaker in 1995 and Senior Winemaker in 1997. His meteoric rise within the company is due to his enormous talents, leadership, inquisitive mind, and his unrelenting passion for winemaking. Craig has been acknowledged for his contribution to some of Australia’s most respected wines – Meshach, Shadrach and the highly regarded Filsell and The Holy Trinity. He is justifiably proud of their development and with his close working relationship with Grant Burge, has crafted a solid reputation for excellence and conveying the true values of the Barossa. Craig is a passionate ambassador for the Barossa and travels internationally for the company promoting the values and messages, which have made the region famous.

Matthew Pellew, Senior Red Winemaker

Senior Red Winemaker, Mr Matthew Pellew.

David Horne commenced with Grant Burge Wines in 1999, following a vintage in the Hunter Valley. He worked closely with Craig and Grant at the Illaparra site for the rest of that year before moving to the Krondorf winery not long after Grant and Helen purchased it. David was fortunate enough to inherit a pretty empty winery so as site manager and winemaker he set to work making the white wines, with the 2002 Summers Chardonnay being awarded the best Chardonnay in show at Canberra in 2003. In addition to making the white wines, David was put in charge of maintaining Grant’s vast reserves of Fortified wines. There was a lot to learn, but David was happy to take up the challenge.

He returned to Illaparra as a red winemaker in 2004 and 2005. David enjoyed experimenting with different wine styles under the careful guidance of Grant and Craig, with the culmination of one of the most outstanding vintages in 2005. In 2006 David returned to Krondorf as the white winemaker and site supervisor. This role was evolving rapidly as the sparkling and tawny production expanded. In late 2010 David was asked to focus on all facets of the Sparkling and Fortified wine production, a role he continues to excel in today. David said, “Industry recognition and trophies are nice, but it is the pursuit to become the best in your field of winemaking and producing the best Australian wines that drives me”.

After completing 10 vintages making red and white wines, Matthew Pellew joined the winemaking team at Grant Burge Wines in 2001. Over the years, he has developed an enviable repertoire of regional winemaking styles and is considered one of the industry’s shining stars. At Grant Burge Wines, Matthew has the task of producing a wide range of red wines ranging in style from rosé to full bodied, covering each of the varied ranges available in the portfolio. With exposure to different Shiraz and Cabernet styles from both the Barossa and Eden Valley, as well as the essential skill of blending the Barossa’s oldest varieties Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvèdre, Matthew has continued to develop and refine his winemaking craft. His undeniable passion for winemaking clearly shows. He willingly shares his knowledge and love for the Grant Burge products with winery visitors and fellow colleagues.

Sparkling and Fortified Winemaker, Mr David Horne.

25Years of Grant Burge Wines

Maxine’s belief in the brand Cellar Door Manager, Ms Maxine Chellew has been with the business from the day it began. It is easy to be captivated by the Grant Burge story when it is told by Cellar Door Manager, Maxine Chellew. Maxine has been with the business from the day it began and has a strong belief in Grant Burge’s winemaking style. The passionate Burge girl is only too happy to sit down with customers and share stories about how each wine received its name, label and packaging. “I believe in every wine Grant makes – he has got the best vineyards and that is where it all begins,” Maxine said. “I grew to be very passionate about his

wines and sharing the stories of how they came to be.” Maxine was one of two cellar door staff when the doors opened in 1988 with just three white wines on the market. A trusted friend of Grant and Helen, Maxine undertook a wine appreciation course and threw her support behind building the business. It was a complete change for the former city girl, who had been working as a beautician before taking on the role. “I was really nervous when I first started. I knew how to make people look

beautiful but I didn’t know anything about wine.” Maxine and the small team were soon rewarded for their efforts, taking out SA’s Small Business of the Year award followed by Small Business of the Year Award for under 30 staff in 1993. “That was one of my biggest highlights. To win such an accolade like that really pushed our brand forward and gave it a big lift.” As the wine list grew with the introduction of Shiraz, Cabernet and more white wines, so did Maxine’s knowledge.

Managing all three cellar doors at Jacob’s Creek, Illaparra and Krondorf, Maxine has been involved in many different events and even seen a few famous faces. Among some of her best memories are fashion parades and lunches, visits from famous cricketers and other celebrities and once an acapella performance from the Liedertafel German choir. “I have had some incredible times. It has been an absolute privilege to have worked and been trusted by Grant and Helen to do this amazing job.”

One of Grant Burge’s greatest pleasures is overseeing the evolution of his business, particularly as it moves into its sixth generation of family winemaking. Eldest son, Toby, the company’s Vineyard Manager, upholds the core belief in the importance of premium quality fruit. Daughter, Amelia joined the Marketing Department in an assistant role early in 2007, and is currently working outside of the business to bring experience back to the company later on in her career. Trent, the youngest, has worked six vintages with the hardworking cellar team at the Illaparra Winery and two vintages in the vineyard. He has recently taken on a new role involving production and promotion, contributing to the winery with project development and travelling with Grant, Helen and the winemaking team to promote the brand. Toby, Amelia and Trent also have a seat on the board of management. In addition to the family business evolvement, Grant Burge Wines continues to grow through the implementation of a domestic sales team and export sales to more than 30 countries. Grant and Helen continue to develop their infrastructure with the current renovations of the Meshach Cellar and the Grant Burge Wines Cellar Door at Krondorf. “All three of our children share our vision to continue this long family tradition of bringing exceptional wines to market,” Grant said. “I will be happy if Grant Burge Wines is synonymous with quality and integrity throughout the world.”
