Celebrating 90 Years

Directors’ message
Robbie and Mark Johnson are excited about the future as they have been about the past for the J. T. Johnson company which was founded by their great-grandfather back in 1923. The fourth generation custodians look to the future: “Food security is and will be a major issue with countries around the world and also here in Australia. At Johnson’s we see our company very well positioned to handle the growth of what could potentially come from current countries and emerging countries. “Our products are now being exported worldwide and have a fantastic reputation for service, quality and delivery. Japan, Korea and Taiwan have been constant markets. “Now the growth is coming from emerging markets like the Middle East where water aquifers are becoming depleted and therefore importing of animal feeds is increasing. “China’s middle class are more dependant on milk and proteins for diets. This has seen great demand for Australian products. India, Vietnam, just to name a few other emerging markets have great potential for forages in years down the track. The Live Trade is a big part of the Pellet Mill. The last ban placed by the Australian government has hurt many in the Northern Territory, Queensland cattle farms and stations. But also everyone involved through the chain. “Of late we see a brighter light for the NT live trade to Indonesia and starting to see improvement already. Live heifer trade from Portland has been in good demand. Many of these heifers end up in China and finish eating oaten hay at some stage. Live sheep trade seems consistent for the foreseeable future as well. “With so many people to thank, we look forward to continuing our long relationships with all involved. “The farmers and freight companies we have been working together with over the years has been a highlight. We really enjoy working with farmers in South Australia and Victoria. There are so many great characters and these guys are so resilient. We have formed long lasting friendships and relationships with many and look up to them with a lot of respect. “The Kapunda community and outer communities have been a great supporter of J. T. Johnson’s in SA and Johnson Asahi in Victoria. We enjoying helping the community wherever we can as individuals or as a company.”

From small chaff plant to worldwide supplier The J. T. Johnson & Sons story began in 1923 when company founder, John Theodore Johnson established a small chaff mill plant in Stockport, South Australia. In 1957 he re-located the plant to nearby Kapunda in the heart of one of the finest hay growing areas in Australia. With the aid of sons Max and Clyde, the business grew rapidly over the next 20 years and in 1976 the company built and commissioned its first Pellet Production Mill. In 1962 an oat milling facility was built. Oats were rolled, hulled, clipped and graded and were produced for domestic and export horse markets. This factory ceased operations in 1990. The success of this operation led to the company making a major investment in 1985 by establishing a new and unique High Fibre Pellet Mill, which was regarded to be one of the best in the world. Investment upgrades in technology has allowed J. T. Johnson & Sons to formulate specific rations to suit customer demands which has a production capacity of 60,000 metric tonnes per year. In 1987 the company diversified slightly as it entered the Export Hay markets in Japan, South East Asia and the Middle East. Strict quality control guidelines and the ability to move with demands from the market has assisted continued growth over the past 20 years. In 1995 J. T. Johnson & Sons entered in to a joint venture agreement with Japanese company, Asahi Industries to form Johnson Asahi. The company has a hay processing plant in Horsham, Victoria, that produces oaten hay, alfalfa hay and straw.
Johnson’s went from a small business in Stockport, to a worldwide supplier of hay and straw. J. T. Johnson & Sons purchased a new hay production plant from Canadian company, Hunterwood Technologies in 2005. This plant produces half cut bales, 40kg bales, 450kg Mag bales and a Bedding Straw bale
designed specifically for Johnson’s. With the latest hay production technology in both South Australia and Victoria, production capacity is now around 200,000 metric tonnes of hay and straw per year
for the Asian and Middle Eastern fodder markets. The company is currently under fourth generation management and remains 100 per cent family owned.

In 1957 the business relocated to Kapunda where the chaff business continued and Johnson’s began processing oats for animal feed and human consumption.

Starting from scratch One of Mr Chris Johnson’s fondest memories of his grandfather, J. T. Johnson is learning to drive in his Holden as a learner. Not only did J.T. teach Chris to drive, he left the legacy of a burgeoning business for Chris and his family to take over. Chris started at the company 40 years ago, stacking sheets of hay, driving tractors, pitching hay to the chaff mill and bagging. As he puts it, “You name it, we had to do it.” Johnson’s bought a farming property at Allendale North in 1978, which Chris ran with wife, Julie and daughters, Kelly, Amy and Melissa until 2000. After the farm was sold, he moved to Kapunda to work in the Johnson’s office as the production manager. He was also a director of the company and managed Johnson Asahi for five years. Chris said he enjoyed all aspects of the business, including bagging and truck driving – before retiring in January this year. “That’s been the family tradition, starting from scratch and working your way through,” Chris said. “I’ve enjoyed every part of it, the important thing is getting to work closely with your family.”
Fond memories of Johnson’s Some of Mr Denis Johnson’s earliest memories are running around and jumping on haystacks – mostly when he shouldn’t have been. Years later, he became the manager of J. T. Johnson and Sons, after working his way up through the business. He started at the company on October 1, 1970, after working for his uncle in Adelaide. There were no special privileges being the son of the boss. He worked his way up from production, cutting chaff, pitching hay, bagging and truck driving. He stayed in

production for nearly 10 years, before moving into administration and then learning about the export market. Denis then became involved in the marketing side for the chaff, oats and pellet trade for live export. In 1983, Denis took over managing the business after his father Max had a stroke. Denis took on the role of managing director, overseeing expansion with the export hay business into Asia and the Middle East. He officially retired in May 2011 and
handed over the business to his sons, Robbie and Mark. “There’s been a lot of highs and lows,” Denis said. “On the high side, it’s been terrific to watch where the company’s gone over the past 30 years when we were basically chaff and oat milling to where we’ve become a major player in the world market for forage. “I’ve travelled the world many times and it’s been hard work but I’ve enjoyed doing it and I’ve made some really

good friends locally and overseas.” Denis said he always wanted to be involved in the family business and his father encouraged him. “We were brought up into the business, it was always talked about at home. My mother used to help out in the early days with the book keeping.” Denis said they had always been a close family unit and now he has retired, he’s happy to see the business blossoming and moving forward with the next generation.
“Ezy-Fit Hydraulics as a supplier of Hydraulic Cylinders to J.T. Johnson for the past 20 years would like to congratulate them on their 90th year in business and thank them for their ongoing support to local manufacturing.”

May, 1924 – J. T. Johnson paid out Beno and took over the Stockport business on his own. He kept that going through to the second world war and after that, they became the fuel distributors for Caltex.
Early 1970s – Johnson’s sold their Caltex business.
1985 – Built second pellet mill (new pellet mill). At the time, a state of the art facility specifically to supply pellet feed for the live export trade was built, which is still in operation today.
1992 – Closed down oat mill. 1995 – Set up a joint venture with Japanese company, Asahi Industries. Set up factories in Horsham and Boort, Victoria (they sold the Boort factory 10 years ago). The Horsham factory is still in operation.
1987-88 – Johnson’s entered the export oaten hay business. In their first year, they manufactured 1,000 tonnes of hay for the Japanese market. Twenty five years later, they manufacture 170,000 tonnes.
Early 2000s – Closed old pellet mill for upgrade. Closed first mill and upgraded the new pellet mill and increased the capacity. Closed production on Adelaide Road.
1989 – Max Johnson passed away.
2005 – Installed a new Hunterwood press from Canada at Kapunda factory. It is a much bigger, efficient press.
1990 – Closed the chaff mill down to concentrate on export hay business.
2007 – Put the same press in Horsham to double capacity. May 26, 2008 – Opened their office on Perry Road, Kapunda. Looking forward – In May this year, Johnson’s built a new facility in Nhill, Victoria to supply forage to domestic and international markets. By the end of this year they will have a brand new container park. They are now share farming land in Victoria and South Australia.

them in their day to day life,” The Kapunda local was introduced to the Future Leaders’ programme and he saw it as an opportunity to network with people in the Barossa. Ryan “ We have similar issues like export and costs so it’s good to be able to talk about these things together.” Corey works in the sales, marketing and quality control areas for the Japanese hay market and even lived in Japan in 2010. Johnson & Sons are the first hay exporters in the world to x-ray big bales before processing, ensuring any foreign material is detected to eliminate health concerns. They were also the first in the world to address the issue of product contamination. This innovative technology and eco-safe quality control ensures customers receive the best quality product and service. They undertake field inspections four times a year and all products are tagged and barcoded.
Johnson’s Director, Mr Mark Johnson said their system gives Johnson’s full traceability of what gets produced on the farms. “Through our traceability and scanning, we can follow a bale all the way through to a dairy farmer in Japan, a beef farmer in Korea or camel famer in the United Arab Emarates, or wherever it may go,” Mark said. “That person just needs to give us the job number and we can get the full record of the hay.”
Congratulations to the Johnson Family and Staff on reaching 90 years in business • Also stockists of Quality Mobil Lubricants • We pick up your waste oil
In 2007 Johnson’s became the first hay exporter in the world to x-ray all large field bales to reduce contamination levels in the finished product. They remain a market leader in quality assurance and hay production technology.

Mutual respect between Johnson’s and farmers The farmers who supply to J.T. Johnson and Sons have a lot of respect for the company and its employees. E.L. Schuster & Son at Freeling have been dealing with Johnson’s since the early ‘80s and four generations of the Schuster family have come to know the Johnson family. Gavin Schuster said they had been terrific to deal with because they were so agriculturally minded. “They really know about good quality hay and we get on well with them,” Gavin said.
The Schuster and Johnsons owned a square bailer together and formed a great relationship through that. “Chris and I bailed hay together for a few years. “They had their own farm so they know the pitfalls of hay making and understand the seasonal constraints.” Gavin said Johnson’s had been great for the local hay industry. “Johnson’s buy a lot of product, which has allowed farmers to diversify.”
Gavin’s highlight of supplying to Johnson’s was a trip to Japan, where he was able to see exactly what happened when his hay went overseas. “It’s a real credit to the older guys that have taught the younger guys and put faith in them. “The younger guys can go to Japan and deal with the overseas customers and they’re really switched on. “We’ve got a lot of respect for Johnson’s and they’ve got a lot of respect for their suppliers.”
Johnson’s have about 120 regular growers for their export business, who grow about 12,000 hectares a year. Their growers come from Crystal Brook, Roseworthy, Mallala, Eudunda and anywhere in between. Johnson’s Purchasing Manager, Mr Robert Diekman has been in his role for 10 years, but with the company nearly 30 years. “A lot of the growers have been with us for a long time so they’ve been consistently doing similar acres for us each year, they’re very loyal,” Robert said.
