Jacob’s creek Visitor centre 10th anniVersary
Award-winning centre keeps getting better After 10 years, over a million visitors and multiple awards, the Jacob’s Creek Visitor Centre is still breaking new ground. Since the doors first opened in 2002, Orlando Wines has continued to improve and expand the centre precinct which now ranks as one of South Australia’s key tourist drawcards. The centre is built on the site where early European settlers, the Jacob family, had an estate which consisted of a dairy, mixed farm, vineyards and a winery. It was just upstream on the watercourse named after them that Orlando Wines company founder, Johann Gramp, planted the Barossa’s first commercial vineyard in 1847. “We’ve moved well beyond the traditional cellar door to provide a memorable experience that appeals on many different levels,” says Jacob’s Creek Brand Sites Manager, Elaine Ratcliffe. “Visitors can enjoy a relaxed lunch in the awardwinning Jacob’s Restaurant or take part in a wine tasting at the cellar door bar where the range of wines on offer include some exciting cellar door only alternative varietal wines such as Fiano, Negro Amaro and Tannat. We also offer wine education sessions as well as sensory workshops.” “The centre has an interpretative gallery for visitors to learn about our history and heritage and how wine is made, while outdoors people can discover more about grape-growing with a tour of the Jacob’s Creek demonstration vineyard. Alternatively visitors can also have a relaxing picnic alongside Jacob’s Creek or a walk along the nature trail developed within the 42-hectare site.” The Jacob’s Creek Visitor Centre is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day of the year, except Good Friday and Christmas Day. The Jacob’s Creek Visitor Centre was inducted into the South Australian Tourism Awards coveted Hall of Fame in 2010 and won the Australian Tourism Award for best tourism winery in 2011. The centre also has Climate Action Accreditation awarded by Eco Tourism Australia.
Celebrating the success of Jacob’s Creek Visitor Centre at the Australian Tourism Awards are Greg Stirling, Head of Brand Sites and Visitation; Elaine Ratcliffe, Jacob’s Creek Brand Sites Manager and Brett McKinnon, Managing Director, Orlando Wines.

It’s a Great Day for Solar at Jacob’s Creek.
The environment has played a central role in shaping the Jacob’s Creek Visitor Centre into one of Australia’s top wine tourist attractions. Great care has gone into transforming the 42-hectare precinct on the bank of the famous creek into a home for native flora and fauna. Since 1997 Orlando Wines has worked with the Natural Resources Management Board (NRMB) and other landowners to improve biodiversity in the Jacob’s Creek catchment. This has involved extensive work to remove exotics, such as ash and olive, which were introduced by early European settlers. The invasive species thrive in the waterways, but provide poor habitat and few food resources for native animals. Plantings of native Australian plants and the development of vegetation corridors have been an important part of realising the overall objective in the fragile creek system, which is a tributary of the North Para River. “Visitors can enjoy the efforts of this programme by using the walking trail which winds along Jacob’s Creek
and we’re currently completing a bridge which will be part of the new Barossa Bike Trail,” said Tim Scheiner, Jacob’s Creek Precinct Manager. While the centre itself has numerous features designed with sustainability in mind, the ongoing strong focus on sustainability is evident to visitors as soon as they arrive at the site and pass two impressive new solar trackers. Developed by ZEN Technology, the trackers follow the sun throughout the day to maximise the amount of energy the solar panels can produce, making them about 40 per cent more efficient. The clearing of regrowth of exotic species remains an ongoing project across the Jacob’s Creek site and further up the catchment, partly supported by a grant from the Natural Resources Management Board and the Federal Government Biodiversity Fund. On the morning of Sunday, September 30 volunteers are invited to help with this work by planting trees to celebrate World Rivers Day. For more details on how to become involved contact the Jacob’s Creek Visitor Centre on 8521 3000.
At ZEN Business Energy Systems, we understand what drives your business because we’re business people ourselves. With a proven track record in providing large scale solar solutions, ZEN can customise a system to suit your every need. In 2011, ZEN installed two Dual Axis Solar Trackers at the Jacob’s Creek Winery Visitors Centre. The trackers, which produce 40% more energy than fixed installations, are significantly offsetting the centre’s energy use, and have become tourist attractions in their own right for the centre’s 160,000 annual visitors.
ZEN would like to congratulate the Jacob’s Creek Visitors Centre on 10 years of hospitality in the Barossa and on their continuing commitment to renewable energy technology. it’s always a great day for solar at zen

Helping shape a global wine brand The career path of Bernard Hickin and the rise of global wine brand Jacob’s Creek have been inextricably linked since day one. As a newly qualified winemaker at Orlando Wines in 1976, Bernard was given a taste of the first Jacob’s Creek – a new, very approachable style of Shiraz Cabernet Malbec. Fast forward to 2012 and Bernard is now Chief Winemaker with responsibility for key
winemaking decisions and representing the brand internationally. It’s been an incredible journey with Bernard’s deep passion for style and quality helping to shape the evolution of Jacob’s Creek into one of the world’s leading wine brands. A defining period came in 1992 when he worked on a vintage in Bordeaux and also visited Burgundy and Champagne.
10 th Anniversary congratulations... We value our association with Jacob’s Creek Visitor Centre and are proud providers of quality business equipment.
Chief Winemaker, Bernard Hickin.

“It was a pivotal time in my career when I discovered the real significance of terroir and how superior vineyards are so critical to the production of quality wines,” said Bernard. The other revelation was the importance of the best, fine-grained French oak for creating the most prized wines. Bernard has applied these insights to the Jacob’s Creek Reserve range and the introduction of regional
