A new look Angaston Show was hailed a success with almost 2,000 people attending the one-day event. Isabel Emmett, Chloe Pollack, Jemma Linke, Olyvia Reimers and Casey Miles were all smiles.

Hungry Jack’s to open in Nuriootpa By Liam Dobbs
Sixty new jobs will be created upon the arrival of fast food chain Hungry Jack’s, which will be opening in Nuriootpa at the end of June. The new store will occupy the former Red Rooster site, adjacent to On The Run and will be operating as a 24 hour store. Ms Michaela Webster, General Manager of On The Run, announced the Hungry Jack’s would be opening in the Barossa Valley in a city newspaper, putting to rest all of the rumours surrounding the vacant Red Rooster site. Sixty new jobs ranging from management to junior staff members is a big deal for a country area such as Nuriootpa. Mrs Mel Millard, the General Manager of Food for On The Run is very excited about the project. “Sixty jobs is a big deal,” she said. “Being a South Australian owned, family company, the money will stay in South Australia.” She went on to say the introduction of Hungry Jack’s to the Barossa Valley would be a positive one, providing many jobs to the youth. The store will provide really good work experience opportunities for teenagers, preparing them for life after school.

Member for Schubert, Mr Stephan Knoll has put pressure on the State Government to address increasing stormwater drainage issues in Nuriootpa. In a letter to Transport and Infrastructure Minister, Mr Stephen Mullighan, Mr Knoll has expressed his urgency on the matter citing, drainage issues near the town’s roundabout is not only causing traffic disruptions but also raises concerns over the damage to property at Beckwith Park. “There really is a sense of urgency with this issue,” said Mr Knoll. “Winter is coming on already and we have had a wet few months. “What I am worried about is, is there going to be permanent damage to the lower levels of Beckwith Park?” Mr Knoll’s letter explains to the Minister the installation of the roundabout while assisting with significant traffic flow improvements, has diverted stormwater to drains which have proven to be insufficient. “Even a normal rainfall event leads to overflowing of the road drains, this water then flows into the Beckwith Park precinct,” said Mr Knoll’s letter. With a drainage investigation expected to be undertaken by the Department for Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI), Mr Knoll was keen to find out when the investigation would be complete and what action will be taken by the department to prevent future flooding. Also looking for answers is Beckwith Park’s Mr Ben Scott, who has welcomed the support from Mr Knoll. Mr Scott said that the Tolley Warehouse cannot be leased out to tenants because of the issue.

The Barossa will have an exciting “next generation” supermarket and retail shopping complex by 2016, if development plans announced by The Co-op this week, are approved by the State Government. In a strong show of confidence in the Barossa’s future, The Co-op Chairman, Mr Phillip Schmaal said more than $10 million will be invested in the first stage of the visionary shopping centre re-development in Nuriootpa. “Over the last three years the Board and management team have been undertaking customer market research, and from this we know that our 17,000 members are very happy with The Co-op but they want more shopping choice - particularly groceries and fresh food, but also in casual food and beverage dining as well as speciality shopping,” Mr Schmaal said. “We have also outgrown our current Foodland, which is now 16 years old, and our facilities such as refrigeration, preparation areas and fresh food displays are out of date and inefficient. “Most supermarkets are updated every five years and this is long overdue if we are to keep pace with retail trends around Australia.” “Really it is about creating a big shopping experience. We are already the third biggest independent supermarket in the country. “Our proposal is not about providing another country town facility but rather that the region can expect to have the same environment as the service provided in the metropolitan area yet with a country feel.” The Co-op Chief Executive, Mr Graeme Longmuir said Stage 1 would commence with the construction of a brand new Foodland supermarket adjacent to the current shopping centre.

Mr Brett Hoffmann, of Hoffmann Building Services, Nuriootpa won four major building industry awards at the Annual Housing Industry Association Awards Ceremony.
Barossa Local Service Area police officers are now able to personally carry Electronic Control Devices due to a change in policy last Wednesday. The change in policy means that all patrol crews will be issued with an ECD, the preferred, non-lethal operational option. Until now, strict guidelines were in place dictating that officers must keep the ECD in the boot of a patrol vehicle, only to be removed in the case of a high risk incident where a weapon is being used. The new policy provides greater protection and a better option to control a dangerous situation. Senior Sergeant Martin Kennedy believes ECDs are a very practical tool, which has saved lives in the Barossa local service area. “We have successfully used an ECD on an armed person, which meant we didn’t require the use of more legal force,” he explained. “This was an instance when the tool was used from the boot because it was a situation that escalated slowly. “In an instance when the situation is escalating rapidly, it’s another good option on hand. “I’m sure the community would prefer for their local police to have options at hand rather than in the boot or locked up in the police station.” A very deliberate approach has been taken during the staged rollout of ECDs.

Mrs Mary Frick, President of Roses in the Heartland and President of Barossa Rose & Flower Show extended her thanks to Mark and Mandy Creed for allowing the use of their barrel room for the rose display. “Barossa Designer’s Floral Club and Mr David Ruston put up a wonderful display themselves,” she added. Barossa Floral Club provided 38 exhibits and Mrs Rosie Sherwood worked with children to be involved in this year’s rose and flower show.

The 2015 Vintage Festival programme, showcasing 95 events, was officially launched. Festival Director, Mr Andrew Dundon described the five day festival as a sophisticated, community driven event with a focus on being accessible to all.

Faith Lutheran College topped the region with their dux, Philip Grace scoring an ATAR of 99.9. Nuriootpa High School followed closely behind with their dux, Kailin Sullivan scoring 99.6.
