Spring brings colour to local gardens The blossom is out and the wattles are in flower and that signifies one thing – spring is here. Tanunda’s Dianne Semmler says now is a great time to add colour to your garden. She has a number of plants in her garden, particularly Helleborous, which also flower in winter. In addition to colour, gardeners should also think about scent with Boronia and Viburnum great choices. When it comes to designing your garden, consider the position of the sun and surrounds ie driveways or homes. Hardy plants and those tolerant to the heat, should be planted together and the same tip goes for sensitive plants, which are likely to need more water and attention. Dianne said it is also good to have lawn in your yard, not just for the children or grandchildren to play on but it helps to keep the house cool. Most people are going with Kikuya due to the water requirements.

“It is also good to look at other gardens, you get ideas and see how things grow in your area,” said Dianne. Deciduous trees on the northern or western side of a home will also help to keep a house cool while adding beauty to your garden. Dianne said gardens are a great way to take time out from everything and encouraged local gardeners to incorporate bird baths or water areas which will bring birds and butterflies into the yard. And as trees and bushes grow you can change the landscape of your garden by incorporating new plants and Dianne encourages gardeners to change sections each season because it creates further interest. While the backyard at the Semmler property was created in the 90s, the front yard has undergone a transformation over the last couple of years due to house extensions.

2012 Spring

September, the best month for native plants Barossa Nursery has a massive range of gorgeous flowering Australian native plants and here is a small selection of really different, exciting varieties. Phebaliums have starry yellow flowers with long, fluffy stamens. They like well drained soils and tolerate dry periods and moderate frosts. Makes a great cut flower and lasts three weeks in a vase. Phebalium ‘Golden Glow’ grows 1.2 metres high and Phebalium white grows 1.5 metres high. Hibbertias or native buttercups are long flowering small shrubs, clothing themselves with a mass of flowers. A hardy plant for sunny or part shade, well drained position. They are tolerant of drought, frost and coastal conditions.

Hibbertia Sericca grows 75cm tall and Hibbertia microphylla grows 50cm tall and wide. Isopogons are dramatic, stunning plants with variable foliage and purple or yellow cone flowers. They like full sun and are drought and frost tolerant. Isopogon ‘Candy Cones’ grows 1-2 metres tall and Isogon ‘Pink Sparkler’ has foliage just like a sparkler and grows 75cm tall. Calytrix tetragona pink form is a small native shrub growing one metre high. Right now it is in heavy bud and will soon be covered with bright pink, star shaped flowers. It is native to the Barossa and surrounds. Tetrathecas are small, very free flowering plants growing

60cm high. Tetratheca ciliata has masses of white tubular flowers and Tetrathecathymifolia is smothered in pretty mauve flowers. Epacris ‘Pan Pipes’ gives a showy display of flowers over a long period. Growing one metre high, a profusion of dainty, tubular flowers of pink and white grow up the stem. Loves sun, is frost tolerant and bird attracting. The Australian Mint bushes, Prostanthera is bursting into flower now with a profusion of purple flowers. The foliage has a strong fresh minty smell. Some forms are native to the Barossa. Fast growing, Prostanthera denticulata, the rough Mint Bush grows 50-90cm high. The Blue Boronia, Boronia coerulescens is a dainty small shrub 50cm high with a profusion of soft lilac star flowers from autumn to spring. It tolerates sun and part shade, frost and drought. All the Boronias at Barossa Nursery are coming into flower now, with their sweet perfume spreading throughout the nursery. They come in colours of brown, yellow, white, pink, purple and blue. Barossa Nursery looks at its very best in springtime with a huge range of flowering natives and exotics. Lee-Anne has been very busy packing away gorgeous giftware and the shop looks quite magical. Looking forward to seeing you at the award winning Barossa Nursery in this beautiful spring season.

Let’s ask Erica...

CAST GRILLE DESIGNS

Have your gardening questions answered by Barossa Nursery, Barossa Valley Way, Nuriootpa. Dear Erica, I have just acquired a wine barrel, which I want to cut in half and thought to plant a couple of citrus, eg a dwarf orange and a dwarf lemon. Would they be suitable for this? Ryan S. Answer: Half wine barrels make good pots and are quite suitable for dwarf citrus. Make sure you drill a number of good sized holes in the bottom of the barrels for drainage. Only use potting soil, four bags of the premium ‘Get Growing’ potting soil per half wine barrel is what I would recommend. Position your barrels in full sun, as citrus like plenty of sun. The dwarf Washington Navel orange is the only dwarf orange, but with the dwarf lemons, there is a choice of three: Lisbon – the usual good quality sour lemon, Eureka – a thicker skinned sour lemon and Meyer – a more orange, not quite as sour lemon. Erica.

2012 Spring Dear Erica, I’ve been growing my own carrots, but why do they always get forked roots? How deep should I plant the seed? Jamie. Answer: Long rooted carrots need deep loose, freshly dug soil without lumps of manure or compost or stones in it. Compost and manure should have been applied about three months earlier so it breaks down and work through your soil to remove as many stones as you can, if stony. Run a line with your finger half an inch deep and thinly run seeds along the line (or use seed tape), rake the soil over and water in with Seasol. Erica.

Home Ideas

Dear Erica, One of my mates got some instructions on how to fill a raised garden bed, for vegetable planting. Can you print what it is please? Michael W. Answer: You can put a layer of peastraw down and add potting soil, or you can add your own compost. The method is as follow: put some old newspaper at the bottom. Then add suitable drainage material eg gravel, bricks, broken terracotta or roof tiles. On top of this, lay down a bed of peastraw. To the top of the straw add some topsoil and then add organic material to the pile eg cow/horse/ chicken manure, fruit and vegetable peels, leaf litter, etc. Then add another layer of newspaper, more straw, topsoil and more organic material. Once all the material has decomposed thoroughly, i.e. is cool in the middle and smells earthy, your bed is ready for planting. (This can take 3-6 months depending on the freshness of the materials used). Erica.

Barossa Homemaker Centre top five homeware products... Candles

Candles also play a big part in home decor. It creates an ambience and often a scent that can fill a home and make it very welcoming.

There are many items available that can make a home look more appealing... but the favourite at the moment is the ‘Industrial look”, says Wayne Hampel, Barossa Home Living Store Manager, Nuriootpa.

Cushions

Cushions are another way of changing the look of any room in the house. These can be quite dramatic and eye catching or simply a spot of colour to enhance a lounge or bedroom suite.

This is a concept that will suit many styles of home from the old and renovated to the brand new.

Signs

Signs have been a huge hit in home decorating. They can often be funny and are usually matching back to the industrial look.

Prints P r i n t s are always sought after. Particularly at the moment, it is a less expensive way of transforming a room without having to do a total makeover.

Home Ideas

Home with historical spirit The renovations on Kapunda’s Khiyam were a labour of love for its owners, Robert and Anne Hornsey. The home was originally a small cottage, built around 1850 and grew to a grand structure years later. Mr James White was the original owner and Mr David James, a community man and mayor, bought it in the 1890s. He was the first person to drive a car into Kapunda, down South Terrace, formerly David James Avenue. A hundred years later, another mayor moved in and the home has been in the former Light Regional Council mayor’s family for 50 years, with Mr Hornsey’s grandfather purchasing the property. Mr Hornsey’s mother lived in the home prior to them moving into Khiyam in 2005. While his mother lived in the home, and after Mr and Mrs Hornsey moved in, Mr Hornsey renovated the home extensively, almost all on his own. Before they moved in, the kitchen and bathroom were completely renovated.

The bath – with its concrete base – was removed, a new shower was installed and the black walls were lightened. The cosy cottage, which will be turned into an office, has a new roof and rafters, all done by Mr Hornsey. The only work not done by the couple was the installation of the shower screen, and they also had electrical supervisors. “It’s been an experiment, as they say, champagne tastes on a lemonade budget,” Mrs Hornsey said. “The ordinary person can do it, but obviously you’ve got to have skills.” Mr Hornsey took on the tall task of painting the spacious rooms and when he went to buy the paint, the hardware store clerk wouldn’t believe he needed so much paint for a house. When removing the wallpaper, the Hornseys found the words “Kavanagh 17 January 1907” painted on the wall, which means the walls had a facelift exactly 99 years prior. Most of the work was done in the heat of the summer, when Mr Hornsey had a break from farming.

The “spirit of history” is Mrs Hornsey’s favourite thing about the home, along with the ornate gates in front of the house. “When you talk to locals, they say I had a relative that worked here or a grandfather who knew someone that lived there,” Mrs Hornsey said. Mrs Hornsey researched the home extensively and her son, Daniel even did a project on it at school. Both Mr and Mrs Hornsey say the home is a work in progress and it’ll never be complete, but they’re not willing to get started on some tasks, insisting tasks like the garden will be for younger bones. “No matter how big a job it is, it consists of a multitude of little jobs, you just have to do the little jobs in the right order,” Mr Hornsey said. “There’s a great deal of satisfaction you can derive from achieving this.” The home is beautifully decorated with items the couple has found over the years and furniture made by Mr Hornsey and his father. The bookshelf in the library was made by Mr Hornsey.

A freshly built home on Angaston’s Radford Road is something you would expect to see adorning the pages of a New York city living magazine. The design was loosely based on international architecture, culminating the look of an industrial warehouse apartment with a New York loft. Entering the home, industrial checker-plate steel steps lead up to a high ceilinged room, complete with polished concrete floors and natural wood furnishings. The two bedroom, two bathroom home is a complete mirror image of itself, matching up symmetrically on either side of the centre line. While house owner, Rebekah Richardson admits her design was quite unusual for the Barossa, she said it reflects exactly what she had hoped for. “I have always been a fan of the old style, either New York lofts or industrial warehouse apartments,” Rebekah said. “I am on the road a lot with my work and I wanted to create a haven so when I come home, I feel comfortable.” The main room, which contains the kitchen, dining and lounge room, has a well lived-in feel combined with modern features.

Bright splashes of orange and deep red colour the kitchen cupboards, which are made out of a material sourced from Italy. Rebekah, who has spent much of her life travelling and living in different parts of the world, has sourced many pieces of her furniture internationally. Her dining room table, which she bought from California 20 years ago, sits alongside her chairs, which were sourced from Mexico on one of her many trips. “It is the new and old thing I like,” she said. “My table has travelled all over the world with me and has a whole history to it.” Many other accessories in her house have also been inspired by international design and recycled materials. Rebekah’s bedside cupboards are made from recycled train carriage racks, which were once used in the London tubes. “The beautiful thing about recycled material is it gives you a really unique piece of furniture.” As she had never built a home before, Rebekah said the best thing was meeting her budget and having a stress-free experience with Tanunda builders, Bartsch Homes.

From empty block to flourishing garden Less than ten years ago, this flourishing Eden Valley garden was little more than a block of land housing two dead trees. Property owners, Deb and Kev Davey purchased the land in 2003 with a vision to not only create a beautiful cottage garden, but one that would encourage native wildlife. While they transformed the country block into a spectacular array of colourful flowers and native plants, the dead trees remain and are now home to a family of bats. Adding to the garden’s attraction is a small native area at the end of the property, where a bench among the plants is their favourite place to enjoy the serene surroundings. “The wrens and other native birds love the native garden and it is lovely to sit on the bench amongst the plants and watch them,” Deb said. The property is scattered with many deciduous trees including Oaks grown from acorns, Ash, Birch, Elms, Eucalypts and flowering plants such as Poppies, Lavender and Rosemary.

Perhaps one of the most striking parts of the garden is a white stone path, guided by many flowers leading up to a large white gazebo. While the garden has finally formed into what they had always hoped for, it has not been without hard work. The pair spent every spare weekend planting trees and designing the garden before moving onto the property in 2005. While the upkeep includes mowing every week in the warmer months and large amounts of weeding at the end of winter, Deb said the positives far outweigh the negatives. “We have always loved gardening and trees and have grown up with our parents and grandparents’ love of gardening,” Deb said. “We grow our own vegetables and the peaceful environment and the attraction of native birds is a major benefit of having a garden.” Kev, a horticulturist, is continuing to develop the garden’s natural environment by planting more natives indigenous to the area.

Uncovering a local treasure Having a long association with the Kingsford Homestead only reiterated to Tanunda’s Stefan and Leanne Ahrens the importance of purchasing the historic site when it was no longer needed by Channel 9 for the television series, McLeod’s Daughters. But while the original intentions were for staff functions and allowing business guests to stay in the region and enjoy a Barossa weekend, this soon changed once Leanne, who has studied interior design, realised the potential for a luxury retreat. Talking to Stefan and Leanne about the project they embarked on four years ago and you can sense their enthusiasm and passion. Stefan, who grew up nearby, remembers the time spent on the property when it was owned by the Fotheringham family. “As kids we could come here and muck around and I grew to love the property and the river is fantastic,” said Stefan. It was in 1999 the property entered the market and the Ahrens family had plans for the site which would include the family home and Stefan’s father, Bob’s, collection of steam engines. But with Leanne about to give birth to son, Riley the opportunity wasn’t to be and the Ahrens family went on to renovate two homes and call Tanunda home. Together they admit the tourism sector wasn’t one they at first thought of, but now, two months after being opened they haven’t looked back.

“This is a passion... Leanne and my passion,” said Stefan. “We have never been in that industry... we started out looking at a company B and B rather than what it has become but we probably didn’t realise the potential, we were looking at a business plan far broader than what was thought of.” The homestead now offers luxury style accommodation with gum trees and tranquil views set on 225 acres. Before embarking on the homestead, Leanne took to the paddocks, revegetating the area with an array of native trees. “In the first year we did nothing with the building... the weekends were spent planting thousands of trees,” said Leanne. “That’s really paid off and now we are concentrating on the gullies.” First to receive some attention was Meg’s Cottage, which is now where managers, Pat and Sally Kent live. Old photos realised the treasure they were to uncover – old stone under rendered walls and plaster. Leanne admits previous owners had left the homestead in a bad condition. However, this has allowed the Ahrens family to make their own mark on the place while keeping to the heritage of the building. “One of the rooms, the John Angas suite, was covered in egg cartons and was the sound room,” said Leanne. “In many of the rooms there were steel bars for cameras on the ceilings.” The homestead is heritage listed and while working on the project, Leanne had to be mindful of this and sought advice accordingly.

“Architecturally it is very plain, there’s no rails or cornices or ceiling roses... quite simplistic inside for its age so it was quite easy to abide by,” said Leanne. “I would say the rooms are contemporary but still classic, so we still kept with heritage of the home.” Work on the homestead started with Leanne building five extra bathrooms and the themes were carried into the rooms. However, each room has its own distinctiveness while still keeping to simple colours to encourage a return trip. “Each suite has French provincial decor and in most of the rooms we have used Belgian linen,” said Leanne. “It has been really exciting for me and exciting to be able to think I could do seven different bathrooms with fittings and different bedrooms.” Also adding to the challenge was the kitchen - turning a homestyle kitchen into one with commercial standards. “We did have to meet commercial standards and it was a matter of getting your head around it. We had a lot of good advice from chef, Stuart Oldfield and that really helped,” said Leanne. “We still wanted the kitchen to look like a homestead kitchen and we did that with the cabinetry to look quite French provincial and using glass splash back rather than stainless steel and granite bench tops.” Leanne agrees the experience has been a big learning curve, particularly as the aim was to make the homestead look like a farm, not a ranch. “We wanted the driveway very Australian and natural... but when you get here it is almost Georgian style home which is quite unusual and you are not expecting that,” said Leanne. “When you are dealing with an old home, quite often to do one thing you need to do four things to do what you want to fix or restore.”

ZEN showing support in Barossa Valley

Hundreds of Barossa Valley homeowners have embraced solar energy in an effort to lower energy bills and reduce their impact on the environment. Barossa Valley resident, Mr Neville Kies installed a 20 panel ZEN Energy System on his farm in 2010. Quickly realising the benefits of solar energy, it didn’t take Neville long to add a further 10 panels to his system. “We were thinking of turning to solar energy when I heard about an information night The Barossa Council was holding,” Mr Kies said. “I went along, and ZEN representatives were there, and they knew exactly what they were talking about.” Local franchisees, Trish and Tony Poyner of ZEN Barossa are thrilled that many in the area have ordered solar energy systems in the past few years.

ZEN Barossa ensure they educate residents on solar energy, as well as participating in sponsorships to support local groups and activities within their local area. Currently ZEN Barossa are proud sponsors of the Barossa Bushgardens and the Kapunda High School Pedal Prix, and are again running four Community Information Sessions in the region during early October. Residents are invited to come along and meet with a ZEN representative to find out more about solar, and ask any questions they may have in person. “The response from Barossa Valley residents has been phenomenal,” Tony said. “We are always looking to give back to the local residents who have supported us, and information session and sponsorships of local groups is an effective way.”
