Chalk paint is an easy way of giving any room a makeover, without the fuss of following the routine of using normal paint.

Ms Cindy King from Stockwell discovered decorative Chalk Paint by Annie Sloan from Brocante in the Barossa, Angaston and has updated features in her home.

Her mantle and dresser have been transformed using the product, which she found extremely easy to use.

“You can use it on things that paint wouldn’t usually stick to and you don’t have to sand it down if you don’t want to,” Ms King said.

“Even if you have something with high gloss, it will stick to it.”

Ms King said one of the greatest things about the Chalk Paint is that it is non-toxic and doesn’t smell.

“It’s really easy to use and it goes a long way.”

Ms King’s next project is to paint some old chairs in bright, vibrant colours.

Natural gas, the energy efficient option A Tanunda woman who lobbied extensively to have natural gas in the town is thrilled work will commence on providing the service this month.

Mrs Loris Pullen launched her campaign, with assistance from The Leader, in June, 2007 as she took on the project to build a new home which she aimed to be as energy efficient as possible.

She had strong interest from a number of businesses and individuals but was told due to the economic climate it wouldn’t happen for some years.

Envestra Limited announced last month they would invest more than $9 million in natural gas infrastructure over the next four years in Tanunda with industrial and commercial customers likely to be connecting from May. “I was trying to use the green smart principles for building my house and having been involved in the building industry for a number of years I was aware of what it could do,” said Mrs Pullen.

“Natural gas is environmentally friendly and a much cheaper form of heating and it is great for cooking.”

With burning log gas fires and top up cylinders, Mrs Pullen hopes the she can tap into the gas line in coming years.

“Given my connection with the building industry over many years, I am particularly interested in environmentally friendly issues and this is one that’s easy for households to take up and I encourage people to take up, it makes a huge difference on their energy costs,” said Mrs Pullen.

“I am very thrilled about the news, even though my part in it was probably fairly small.

“It is great to know that there’s a result.”

Envestra expect to connect 2,000 domestic customers and 40 businesses over 20 years. They also plan to make natural gas available in the Tanunda East subdivision.

Spring – a profusion of flowers At last, after a long, wet, dreary winter, gardens become alive in Spring.

September is the best month for flowering Australian native plants and Barossa Nursery has stocked up and has a massive range of gorgeous native species.

Here is a list of some of the really exciting or unusual ones: ‘Lechenaultia biloba’ is a very small shrub with brilliant bright blue flowers. One of the bluest flowers on earth.

Conostylis ‘Lemon Lights’ is a small tufting grass with starry clusters of yellow flowers.

There is a huge range of Boronias in heavy bud and full flower in colours of white, yellow, pink, purple, brown and blue, all with an incredible fragrance.

Grevilleas are also in bud and flower and what an amazing diversity!

The nursery has Grevillea Fireworks, G. Goldrush, G. Red Hooks, G. bronwenae (rare), G. Strawberry blonde, G. Billy Bonkers, G. Deva, G. Cherry bliss, G. Bonnie Prince Charlie, G. Alpina, G. Ned Kelly, G. Cherry ripe, G. Mt Tamboritha, G. Mallee sensation, G. Ned Kelly, G. Honeyeater heaven, G. Warby range, G. Loopy Lou, G. Little sparkler, G. Winter delight, and the list goes on and on.

‘Astartia Winter Pink’ is smothered in dainty pink flowers. Correa pulchella red’ has lots of red tubular bell flowers and Philotheca ‘Star Struck’ has a spectacular display of white waxy star flowers.

‘Isopogon Candy Cones’ are full of large purple buds, and ‘Pomaderris lanigera dwarf’ has large clusters of custard yellow ball flowers.

Barossa Nursery have a good range of Ozothamnus, with pink or white flowers great in floral work, and lots of Kangaroo paws, short and tall, in colours of white, pink, yellow, orange, red, green and black.

In the climbing natives there is Hardenbergia ‘Candy Wrapper’ with hot pink pea flowers, as well as Hardenbergias with white or purple flowers.

Also there are Kennedia nigricans, a vigorous climber with black and yellow flowers and Kennedia beckxiana with red pea flowers, Pandorea ‘Tiffany’ with cream bell flowers and Pandorea ‘Golden showers’ with golden bells.

A new release shrub is the Adenanthos ‘Bronze Glow’, a wonderful bronze tipped form of the West Australian woollybush.

Some forms of Pimelea (or Rice flower) are native to the Barossa, and Barossa Nursery also has Pimelea ‘Snowclouds’, Pimeleas ‘Spectabilis’ and Pimelea ‘Deep Dream’.

Kunzea ‘Solomon’s Pink’ has large hot pink bottlebrush flowers.

Barossa Nursery has lots of tea-trees, Geraldton wax, eucalypts, eremophilas and much much more.

September is the best time to select natives

In the shade plants, camellias and azaleas are in flower, and Barossa Nursery has a

fantastic range of helleborus, including exquisite doubles in colours of white, pink, burgundy and black.

Dear Erica, I have worked heaps of organic matter into my soil, compost, cow manure, horse manure, lawn clippings and peastraw, and now my soil seems ‘unwettable’.

I have applied liquid and granular forms of soil wetter to no avail. After all the rain, water penetration is only a couple centimetres.

The ground is quite spongy when walked on, do you have any suggestions for improving water penetration?

Shane W. Answer: I had virtually the same question in the nursery, when Sophie Thompson was visiting us and her answer was to add ‘Gogo juice’, a molasses based, microrganism boosted product, to the soil.

The organic matter you have added to your soil may not have broken down in entirety, and got too hot for microorganism (bacteria, yeasts and fungi) activity, and there are probably no worms either, and in such a state, the soil can become quite hydrophobic (won’t take up moisture).

Adding microrganisms is quite a common practice in Europe, and the soil soon “hums” with activity, breaking down the organic matter, providing rich humus, and ideal conditions for water penetration and plant growth.

Gogo juice acts as a probiotic for the soil.

Always use only really old composts and manure in your soil.

Dear Erica, What is the best fertilizer for roses?

Anne Y. Answer: You should have applied Seamungus and Blood and Bone a month or two ago, and now, September is the month to apply the best flower producing fertilizer for roses, ‘Strike Back for Roses’.

Dear Erica, There is a grey furry growth at the base of our apple tree, and we can’t seem to get rid of it. What is it, and what do you do to remove it?

Kylie F. Answer: You would have ‘woolly aphid’, which often attacks apples, and is notoriously difficult to remove.

Physically wipe off as much as you can with a brush or rag and soapy water, then spray liberally with a white oil or pest oil Repeat the white oil/pest oil spray as required.

A home to enjoy retirement

When Graham and Sirpa Harms decided to retire, they knew living in the Barossa was the way to go.

The Nuriootpa couple, who moved from Brisbane, engaged a number of local tradespeople to carry out the work on their home, most of which was done before they moved in.

With guidance from an architect, the couple removed a major wall in their home, renovated their en-suite, gave the kitchen a complete makeover and started work on an outside entertaining area.

With the inside work done, which included painting and new window furnishings, the couple plan to make the most of the spring weather and undertake the paving and landscaping before working on the next home project.

“We have used all locals to do the work and it has been an ongoing activity,” said Sirpa.

“The house was six to seven years old and we were looking to

do some things.

“The en-suite was quite small and it was suggested taking space out of the walk-in robe.

“Porcelain tiles on the floor and up the wall create a sense of openness. Removing the wall has opened it all up… it was two rooms but this way it creates open and clean lines.”

Having the majority of the work done before they moved in allowed the Harms to replace the floors.

But that wasn’t their initial plan.

“We had the original thought that we would do things a little bit here and there, but then we got it all done,” said Sirpa.

“The main bathroom is the next project and we hope to remodel the front yard.

“It was a bigger project than just moving into the house and unpacking.”

The couple pays tribute to the growing list of tradespeople who have assisted in their home project, including C.O. Juncken Builders.

Sirpa’s biggest advice to anyone wanting to tackle a home renovation is to employ an architect.

“I had studied design and scoured magazines, books etcetera to get ideas but found it useful to employ the services of an architect,” said Sirpa.

“Jamie Gladigau from JBG Architects made helpful suggestions I wouldn’t have even thought of.

“The removal of the wall was one of the cheaper things.

“And he arranged council approval and engineers,” adds Graham.

And as they look back on how their home has transformed, Graham and Sirpa are happy.

“It makes for a very comfortable lifestyle,” said Sirpa.

“And we are very happy with the quality of the workmanship.”

Spring Home Ideas Andrew and Vickie’s dream shed Andrew and Vickie Prettejohn weren’t exactly sure what they wanted for their new shed, but they were happy to keep trying until they found it.

The Keyneton couple contacted Dahlitz Construction/Shed Boss and worked with Mark Dahlitz through the whole process to come up with a unique space they are happy with.

The fully insulated shed that Andrew and Vickie had been planning for a couple of years was completed over Christmas.

Not your average shed, Andrew and Vickie’s new area is the perfect mixture of practical and fun.

The lower level is spacious – a necessity with three cars and three roller doors – and holds Andrew’s tools.

Walking up the stairs to the mezzanine, you’re greeted with an oasis away from the hard work going on downstairs.

Andrew’s “man cave” is the perfect place for him to relax and unwind, with his comfy couches and peaceful isolation.

The shape of the shed’s exterior echoes their cottage, with its high roof and strong slopes.

The only requirements Andrew and Vickie had were for the shed to be strong and well built, fit three cars and have a mezzanine level.

The fully bolted Shed Boss Morinda bracket systems combated any future corrosion problems and saved them from ugly welded joins.

“We’re very happy with how it turned out, it’s really practical,” Vickie said.

Vickie knows when she can’t hear Andrew playing his saxophone in the house, he’s enjoying his space in the shed.

Andrew couldn’t be happier with the way the shed turned out.

“We weren’t exactly sure what we wanted to start with, but we worked with Mark and now we’ve got exactly what we want.”

Tackling a project at home is a great way to challenge your ability, but safety is also an important element to consider.

Cutting cords to electrical appliances and not wearing the appropriate safety clothing are common faults when it comes to do it yourself projects.

Barossa Valley Hire, plant controller, Mr Travis Burton, said it is always important for people to check the site out before commencing work and to take their time when tackling a project and to not over do it.

“When people hire equipment from here, we give them a run down of the machine and supply them with safety procedures and show them how to set it up,” said Travis.

“It only takes a couple of minutes… but we tell them if they are still not sure then to give us a call.

“If they are still not sure and comfortable with the job then get someone else to do it.”

Travis said one of the important aspects for people to consider when tackling projects at home, is to “dial before you dig” to avoid damage to cables, sewerage, water and gas lines.

“Also, when using a chainsaw you have got to make sure the site is properly cleared and to consider the slope and weather conditions to ensure the limbs don’t damage fencing,” said Travis.

“Cords are also important, check they are not damaged and that the wires aren’t showing and when you plug it in, make sure the cord is over your shoulder.”

Travis added eye protection, hard hats, ear muffs, gloves, protective clothing and enclosed footwear are also important when it comes to do it yourself projects.

Barossa Valley Hire plant controller, Travis Burton said it is important to wear appropriate safety equipment when working on a project around the home.

Modern upgrade for Warner family

Brett and Mandy Warner’s kitchen renovation has given their Tanunda home a modern feel.

The contemporary design has opened up the room, giving the illusion of extra space in the dining and living area.

The couple overhauled their ’80s style wooden kitchen earlier this year, removing the breakfast bar, lino flooring and cupboard clutter.

Working with the team at Precise Kitchens and Cabinets, Tanunda, Brett and Mandy chose a timeless design to suit any style of furniture for future renovations.

“We really had no idea what we wanted and Dave and Fiona (Precise Kitchens and Cabinets) really helped us out,” Brett said.

“The design is perfect; the first thing I noticed is how big it makes the house look.”

They chose satin white kitchen cupboards with ebony marble laminate bench tops and brushed aluminium kickboards.

To minimise clutter, overhead cupboards were installed, and even the smallest spaces transformed into usable alcoves for recipes and cookbooks.

“We love that all of the spaces are used and the kitchen looks clean and uncluttered,” he said.

The kitchen has become a focal point in the Warner home, with the addition of bar stools allowing for chatter when meals are being cooked.

The old breakfast bar created a barrier between the kitchen and living area, and once removed, made the kitchen more inviting.

“When we are cooking in the kitchen, our friends can take a seat on the stools and feel involved, it’s great.”

An antique beauty

You would expect to see Chris and Annie Hatcher’s Tanunda home adorning the pages of an old English magazine.

That is exactly where they drew inspiration; with every detail of the house carefully planned to fit in with the theme.

Antique standing clocks, claw foot bathtubs, stained glass doors and stuffed pheasants all add a touch of character to the historical home.

Chris and Annie bought the house in 1976, with a vision it could lend to major renovations.

With Chris’ creative eye and Annie’s love for interior decorating, the pair started renovations in 1980, designing a new kitchen, family room and laundry.

After months of careful planning – flicking through hundreds of magazines and visiting display homes in Adelaide – they started on the front-room extension, built in keeping with the original design of the 1930s sandstone home.

The extension included a large living area and one of Annie’s favourite rooms, a traditional English kitchen.

The extension offered plenty of space for their antique furniture, which they had started collecting

as teenagers at auctions.

“We love antique things, it has always been in our blood,” Annie said.

“We have been to London many times and the heritage and history is what we really fell in love with.”

The home has undergone substantial changes in the past 30 years, with two extra bathrooms and another bedroom added.

The main bathroom has had two major transformations, starting as a kitchen, then a bedroom, before being transformed into a bathroom.

While just the two of them live there, the four bedroom, three bathroom home is a popular place for their children and grandchildren to stay.

“With children and grandchildren, I thought why downsize? I love looking after the house, it is a joy to wake up to everyday,” Annie said.

Both keen entertainers, the couple have a large undercover outdoor entertaining area overlooking a swimming pool.

In keeping with the theme of the home, the garden has an old English feel, with box hedges a prominent feature.

Annie Hatcher loves cooking in her spacious kitchen.
