ABOVE: Kim Valois painted the outer cupboard of this chest of drawers a neutral shade, yet chose to wax the drawers to enhance the natural beauty of the timber. Together with a new set of handles, Kim has managed to bring this piece of furniture from brink of ruin to create a talking point for her home. “ “This piece gets a lot of admiring looks ... and it’s a colour that men like as well,” she said. RIGHT: Decoupage is coming back and Kim is finding people are finding fun and exciting ways to add colour and personality to pieces by using laser and ink jet printed images. Why not stencil a feature wall instead of wall papering it? Kim says there are many designs that can be used to enhance any room in the house.

Spring Home Ideas Don’t like it? Paint it...

“Everybody has an old piece of varnished timber furniture that can be made better or different,” says Angaston’s Kim Valois. The Brocante in the Barossa owner is all about giving old, well-loved pieces new life with “Chalk Paint”, a designer brand of paint that needs no surface preparation to achieve beautiful results. The look is described as French Provincial; Country Casual or Shabby Chic. It’s lightly distressed and the affect can be applied to anything from vintage wooden tables and entire kitchens to old suitcases and tea trolleys. “I think the trend is to paint something fresh and light and give it a light, neutral or pale look,” she said. For the more adventurous who love colour, she says old pieces like vintage chairs can be given a whole new personality. “Paint them all the same or you can paint each one a different colour that delights you every time you look at it - it’s good fun.” The craft of decoupage and stencilling is coming back and Kim says she loves using National Geographic maps for decoupage, saying it’s a great way to bring life to an old desk in a children’s room or office, for example. Kim shares five tips to get the most out of using paint to re-vitalise furniture in the home.

1. We all have something we can make over to fit into your home better. You don’t have to throw it out or get rid of it. If it’s really useful to you, make it look different. 2. If you are just starting, generate a bit of momentum and get a fast success under your belt. Just pick something small or low pressure - something you’ll be successful with. 3. If you are not sure what to do with something, just do one thing. Step back and take a look. Don’t bung every colour you can on there. One of the things that is hardest to do is knowing when to stop! It’s very easy to over work something and go too far. The good news with paint is if you don’t like it, you can just paint over and start again. 4. Consider the lines and what you are wanting to achieve. Get something that fits in.” 5. Colour selection is always a challenge, start the conversation and the ideas will flow. If it’s a big piece maybe go a light colour that is going to be a little less imposing. Another option is to go with something you just really love. Look at the things in your environment that you can’t change; maybe your floors, maybe the walls. Maybe you have a really large sofa that’s blue... look at the elements you can’t change to help you make your selection.

Spring Home Ideas Your solar questions answered... With sunlight hours increasing, Andrew Reimann, AMAR Group Electrical, says Spring is a good time to check that your solar system is operating correctly and that it is producing the power expected for its size. And with more than four years experience in installing power generation with his Nuriootpa based business, Andrew offers answers to some of the most frequently asked questions regarding solar. What should those looking to install solar panels be aware of? Check out some details first. The Clean Energy Council has some great consumer guides on what to expect from the designer and installers at their website www.cleanenergy.com.au Don’t be rushed into making a decision by a ‘sales-person’ who doesn’t get onto your roof to measure the tilt, orientation (ie north) and suitability of the roof. Ask about any additional costs such as the charge by SA Power Network for the solar import/export meter or meter panel upgrades. Ask who gets the STCs (Small Scale Technologies Certificates.) Find out about the warranties on the equipment, insurances

such as public liability and professional indemnity for the designer and installer. Does the designer and installer have Clean Energy Council Accreditation? There must be an accredited installer present at the start, middle and for commission of the installation. How often do solar panels need to be cleaned and what other type of maintenance/upkeep is required? Most panels, where installed with a tilt of more than 10 degrees, are ‘self cleaning’ meaning that locations such as the Barossa Valley and surrounding districts will have enough rainfall to prevent excessive yield loss. Minimal maintenance is required to keep your system safe and operating correctly and such information will be listed in the user manual provided with your solar system. Can you add to an existing system? Yes. If, for example, the inverter installed was a 5kW and there is only 3kW of panels installed you can expand your existing system. AC panels are more simple to add because the inverter is matched to each panel meaning as little as one panel can be added at a time. The system configuration isn’t limited by the DC inverter specifications. Are there any rebates available now? The (RET), National Renewable Energy Target is still going

but we don’t know for how long. This is important because the Small Scale Technologies Certificates (STC’s) are used to calculate the ‘rebate’ you will get for your grid-connect solar system. A 3kW system can have 62 STC’s available, this will save you approximately $2,250, approximately 20-25% of the installed system price. What size system do I need? With any accurate solar design to suit your own household, the size of the system and its cost depends on what you want as a home owner. This varies depending on what your energy usage during sunlight hours is; whether you just want to reduce your power bill, or whether you want to end up having a ‘zero’ power bill overall. What is the ideal position for solar panels? Facing directly North with a 30 degree tilt is ideal. The panels can be placed on an East or West facing roof but the yield will be slightly less depending on their tilt. The location should be free of shading trees, chimneys, evaporative air conditioner units and even satellite dishes that cast shadows onto the panels. Where there is shading issues, the AC panels would suit better as the whole system is less affected.

Andrew Reimann, AMAR Group Electrical, Nuriootpa, says a ‘Shading Analysis’ must be provided to all clients when they receive a detailed solar system proposal by an Accredited Designer as required by the Clean Energy Council.“This report shows what percentage of the proposed installation site will be affected by shading during every month of the year. It helps to provide the customer with an accurate estimate of the expected energy yield from the proposed solar system.”

a..a place to call h .

Colour is a feature of Coralie and Chris Rowe’s Gawler East home. The couple have spent two months renovating their first family home which they moved into with one year old son, Coby on the weekend.

It’s the classic real estate mantra of “location, location, location” that led one young family to their dream home. Newly weds, Coralie and Chris Rowe said they wanted “the worst house in the best street” as a project so they could create a warm, fun-filled family home to raise their one year old son, Coby. “Later down the track, if we decide to sell we know we will definitely get our money back,” said Chris. “Also, there is a playground directly across the road which appealed to us; Coby is growing up now, he can go and play.” Coralie and Chris laugh when describing their first impression of the three bedroom house situated on an 860 square metre block of land in Gawler East. “Wow, the house was a dump! It was very old and very run down...it possibly could have been a detonate rather than a renovate! But the structure itself was solid.” Coralie said. “It was a ‘wallpaper heaven’ pretty much, so old school! The bathroom wallpaper got us laughing straight away, it was previously an old lady’s home and the bathroom walls were covered with naked ladies!” The “lovely wallpaper” was the first to go and Chris and Coralie soon saw what they had got themselves into. “It’s really a huge job! We didn’t realise it would take so long just to do that!” What followed involved an epic effort from not only Coralie and Chris but Coralie’s parents who have “given up every weekend” to help out. Extended family and friends joined the action along with a couple of Chris’ ‘tradie’ buddies who helped with tiling, floor sanding, plumbing and electrical work after hours. They all rallied together to help this young family try to keep escalating bills from skyrocketing beyond control. The hard work has paid off with a huge amount being done since the property was purchased two months ago. “So far, we have ripped down lots of wallpaper, sanded every wall in preparation for painting, fixed all the cornicing because most of it was cracked and on its way to falling down. “Filled massive cracks in the walls, painted ceilings, walls, doors, door frames, window seals, skirting boards and in-built cupboards in the hall way. “Gutted the bathroom and re-tiled; re-tiled the toilet and laundry, put in new tap wear, ripped up all the rotten carpets and lino throughout the whole house. Re-carpeted the three bedrooms, sanded and polished all the floor boards that were underneath, pulled down the old curtains and put new ones up.

“Re-done the kitchen cupboards to look new again, changed the kitchen around, had lots of electrical work done including a whole new switchboard, put in a split system and also changed a few lights,” said Coralie with a sigh of exhaustion. Like a scene out of the television series, “The Block”, Coralie and Chris were also faced with some stressful situations. “We had a massive crack in our bathroom wall that you could almost fit your hand in sideways that was caused by the front of the house dropping from soil movement over 40 years.” said Chris. “We thought it would be easy enough to fill the crack and tile over, but it turned out we had to get the house underpinned which blew our budget completely out! “It was an expense we didn’t see coming ... but it had to be done and be done properly.” Despite the set back, Chris and Coralie soldiered on working as well as looking after Coby. “To try and do a whole house renovation with a baby is a challenge!” admits Coralie. She is particularly thankful to her mother and Chris’ cousin who helped baby-sit. “On the weekends there was a lot of shift work between Mum and I, we had a morning shift and an arvo shift where we would take it in turns looking after Coby whilst the other one went to the house to work.” The balancing act has proven successful and the Rowe family are “super excited” to be moving into their newly renovated house very soon. Having learned a lot from the experience, Chris and Coralie offer a tip for those about to embark on the same renovation journey. “Do your research! Make sure you get lots of quotes done, not just one,” said Chris. “We didn’t do a whole lot of research before jumping into it so we didn’t really have any idea how much anything would cost us. So, when we started getting quotes done we figured out the only way this was going to work was to do most of the work ourselves.” Coralie revealed, “We still have a few finishing touches to do like shelving etc. and we are out of budget - ooops!” Both agree that creating their home, which they describe as “kind of country, modern, different,” has been a memorable experience. “It’s so much more rewarding looking back on the finished product knowing that you did it yourself,” said Coralie. “We have just made the house bright and fun and quirky! It’s the little touches that make it different to any other home. “We just wanted it to be unique like us!”

It has a raised garden base, then a tall “tent” cover with plastic and shadecloth drops. While nights are still cold, you can let down the plastic drops for a tomato hothouse and when the weather is 40°C, you can drop the shadecloth to protect your tomato from the heat. Great idea! Two new staff members, Karen Jarrett and Mandy Tessari have joined Barossa Nursery bringing a wealth of garden knowledge and are happy to help you. A new self-serving coffee machine has been installed, something to enjoy while you browse around the beautiful Barossa Nursery. You can build a raised garden bed out of timber or bricks but the easiest way is to buy one in kit form from Barossa Nursery. Galvanised steel garden bed kits are simple to assemble and require a sunny spot in your garden. Cover the ground with newspaper wads and you can fill with peastraw, old compost or manure, garden soil, Plants Plus Groganic Soil improver and Plants Plus fertiliser. Vegies that can be planted now include lettuce, beetroot, silverbeet, spinach, beans, carrots, onions, garlic, leeks, chives and broccoli. Vegies to plant in a week or two are tomatoes, eggplant, capsicuum, chilli, sweetcorn, cucumber, zucchini, pumpkin, rockmelon and watermelon. You can plant these now, but you will need to cover up overnight. Herbs that can be planted now are parsley, thyme, rosemary, sage, coriander, marjoram, oregano, savory, dill, fennel and rocket. Basil, lemon grass and lemon verbena will need protection from the cold. Barossa Nursery always stocks an enormous range of summer vegetables including a huge range of tomatoes. Choose from cherry tomatoes in red, yellow or black, Roma tomatoes in baby, red and yellow, good eating tomatoes like Grosse Lisse, Mighty Red and Apollo and sauce tomatoes like Oxheart and Bragger. Dear Erica, The leaves on my lemon tree have gone pale yellow and some of the tip leaves are stuck together and some have squiggly lines through them. Does the tree need fertilising now and should I cut the tips off? JANINE R.

Answer: Citrus leaves often go pale this time of the year, especially after the frosts we have experienced. In cold weather, citrus cannot take up nutrients and that is why the leaves go pale. Yes, it is time to fertilise all citrus now with a fertiliser specifically formulated for citrus. We find Dynamic Lifter for fruit and citrus, a slow release fertiliser, is excellent. You have a leaf miner, a small caterpillar which burrows or “mines” through the leaf. Spray your leaf tips with Pest oil or Success Ultra which are both quite safe sprays to use. If the tips look too unsightly, you can trim them off. ERICA.

Answer: There was a lot of frost damage in the Barossa. To see if your plants are still alive, just nick a tiny amount of bark away from the stem. If it is bright green, yes it is still alive, if brown it is dead. Check further down the stem or trunk to see if your plant is totally dead. We can still get frosts, so do not be in too much of a hurry to trim them back, as newly exposed tips will burn back even further. Around mid September the ground usually starts warming up and maybe then prune your plants back. ERICA.

Lamps are a great way to brighten up any room. There is a strong feel of light timbers coming through this spring.

Side tables are a strong influence in light timbers representing a “Nordic Retro” feel… this can suit any room.

You could describe Bruce Donaldson as pretty down to earth. The Kuchel Contracting retail manager, husband and father doesn’t profess to be an expert on gardening, but his role in the landscape supply business has proved to be a fertile learning environment. He says now is the time to get into the backyard and finish your pruning to ensure beautiful blooms and an abundance of fruit for the future. “This is the time of year where you need to be cutting back fruit trees, flowering shrubs and roses,” he said. All that excess wood and green material removed during your Spring clean up can be brought into the Siegersdorf Road depot where it will eventually make its way back into garden soils as a nutrient rich compost. “The green waste can all be recycled... they can bring that all here. Lawn clippings, rose prunings.... Basically, all that stuff is then recycled and turned into Jeffries products. All of their mulch is derived from re-constituted green waste - so you are doing your bit for the environment.” The warmer weather also brings those dreaded weeds and Bruce says the battle begins now. “Spot spray all your weeds now or pull them out if you still do it that way.... Because once the sun hits, they tend to go berserk.” For those looking to establish garden beds, Bruce suggests bringing in a load of organic soil as “a ready-to-go medium” for new plantings or to improve nutrient deficient soils. “So you’ve cleaned up, and now you are onto breaking up your soil and establishing new garden beds if you are going to be planting vegetables or seasonal flowers. It’s the perfect time to plant out all the seeds.”

Bruce says feeding garden beds with products like Dynamic Lifter or Kuchel’s organic soil will give everything a real kick start for Spring. “It puts all the nutrients back. Adding that into your existing soil will certainly give things a boost from the beginning.” Avid gardeners will also be planning ahead for Summer. It’s a good time to start thinking about the approaching warm to hot weather and mulching is definitely on the to-do list this season. “The weeds are going to start going crazy, if they haven’t done already. Applying a good mulch helps to suppress the weeds so that slows them down so they don’t appear as quick or as plentiful. It also helps to retain moisture and save on watering. “Mulching will lower your water bills for when summer comes and the hot weather hits. It helps stop the plants from burning basically,” says Bruce. A lot of lawns tend to go dormant over winter, browning off as a result of frosty winter mornings. A good feed with Dynamic Lifter will set lawns on track to a bright green future and provide the ultimate playground for children and pets to run around on in Summer. Bruce explains, “ You can even sprinkle the organic soil over the top of lawns and get them top dressed and fed with nutrients to bring them back to life.” And as a father of an 18 month old son, Bruce encourages people to get the children involved in the garden too. “Involve the kids. I like to involve Tex as much as I can... Kids just pick up on what you do so it’s good to teach them about how gardens grow and where food comes from. “A small vegetable or herb garden is the perfect way because that way they get the spoils of their work! Everything ripens up and they can see all their hard work on the dinner plate.”
