Barossa Stage SANTOS TOUR DOWN UNDER 2014
Best of Barossa at Santos Tour Down Under
Locals and visitors can sample the best of the Barossa when Stage 1 of the 2014 Santos Tour Down Under rolls into town on Tuesday, January 21. From community parades to long lunches showcasing Barossa fare, the region will capitalise on both a race start and finish for 14th instalment of the world-famous cycling race. The event returns to Nuriootpa for the first time since its inception in 1999, with three laps of the Barossa and a gruelling Mengler’s Hill climb just 14 kilometres from the finish line in Angaston. The pre-race action begins on Monday as Cycling SA and Cycling Australia present a showcase of women’s cycling for the second stage of the Santos Women’s Cup. Starting and finishing in Angaston, Australia’s elite female cyclists will provide some action-packed competition as they ride laps two and three of the first stage. Nuriootpa will celebrate race day from 8.30 a.m. Tuesday with a community breakfast and ‘Meet the Riders’ parade ahead of the race start at 11 a.m. Other activities include competitions, art exhibition, skate park youth zone, scavenger hunt, children’s entertainment and music. Seppeltsfield Road will host a variety of cellar door brunches and long table lunches, while Greenock will recreate a French village atmosphere with an artisans market in the village square and Tanunda will install a pop-up art and tasting market. Angaston will host ‘A Day at the Races’ with a carnival atmosphere throughout the morning, a family friendly precinct in Memorial Park and great spectator viewing as riders loop Angaston three times. The thrill of the chase to the finish line will take place at 2.40 p.m. followed by podium presentations, live music and refreshments on the Village Green. The race action heads to southern Barossa on Thursday, January 23 with viewing points at Williamstown, Springton and Mount Pleasant for Stage 3 Norwood to Campbelltown. Barossa Mayor, Brian Hurn expects the multiplier effect of the local stage will again provide a great economic boost for the region. “The Barossa has proven it knows how to host both a stage start and finish in style, and we look forward to rolling out the red carpet for a field of first-class competitors and their supporters,” he said.
Bim Lange, Chairman of the Barossa Tour Down Under Working Party.

Nuriootpa’s ready for race start
Fifteen years since hosting the inaugural event, the Tour Down Under returns to Nuriootpa next Tuesday for the stage one start. Nuriootpa Futures Association administration officer, Kathy Schilling said they were excited to be given the opportunity to host the start of the first stage of the 2014 event. “We are pretty excited to have been given the opportunity again… we are going to bring Nuriootpa alive,” said Kathy. “It is the first start for the whole tour… there will be a community parade headed by the Mayor and the Nuriootpa Town Band. “We are trying to involve the community as much as possible.” Festivities in Nuriootpa kick off on Monday, the day before the race start, teaming up with Nuriootpa Library to decorate bikes and the street.
A pre race cocktail party with Annette Edmondson, Australian track cyclist who won silver medals in the Omnium and team pursuit events at the 2012 UCI Track Cycling World Championships has also been planned. And as riders and team officials converge on the town early Tuesday morning, a Barossa Brunch coupled with a “Bubbles, breakfast and bikes” will be held before the community street parade at 8.30 a.m. Those looking to spend the day in Nuriootpa have been encouraged to do so with an array of other events, as riders leave the town at 11 a.m. and come through the town again at 12.08 p.m. and 1.15 p.m. “There’s lots of spots within Nuriootpa for families to enjoy and to stay and watch the race,” said Kathy. “Come for breakfast… egg and bacon for sale for everybody
Getting ready for Nuriootpa to host the start of next week’s Tour Down Under are, back: Chris Ruwoldt, Cameron Ashmead and Kathy Schilling. Front: Lyndon Stoll and Michelle O’Rielly.
and coffee from the Uniting Church to Schaedel Haus and the Vine Inn, there’ll be a lot of food available.” Between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. there will be entertainment for all ages coupled with an art exhibition at Schaedel Haus. Nuriootpa businesses have rallied together for the Groovy Grape Scavenger Hunt, giving participants an opportunity to follow the trail in the town. Workshops for BMX bike, scooter and skateboard users will be held at the skate park, as part of a Youth Zone, where local band, Slick Arnold will perform. “There’s enough activities to keep people in town for the next round,” said Kathy. And while the race and town activities conclude by 1 p.m., the race finish can be viewed from the big screen at the Vine Inn.
There’ll be plenty of activities for the young ones in Nuriootpa with BMX, scooter and skateboard workshops planned. Looking forward to the event are, from left: Maegan Schiller, Hayden Schiller, Archer Currie, Amelia O’Rielly and Jordan O’Rielly.

“Barossa’s Little Scotland is going a little Paris,” is how organisers are describing Greenock’s Tour Down Under celebrations next Tuesday. The town’s village square will be transformed into a French inspired market, with baguettes, paté and French fries the order of the day. And to add a little extra “ooh-la-la” to the festivities, the Greenock Village Community Association have arranged for “The Baker Suite” to perform modern French folk music, typically heard in provincial cafés. The day starts at 10 a.m. and Association representative, Mrs Virgina Armstrong said there will be an abundance of activities for all ages to enjoy up until 2.30 p.m. “Bring a chair, hat and sunscreen and sit under the pepper trees and umbrellas... cheer on the cyclists while you relax with the locals,” she said. “Its free and its family. It’s all about getting people to come out and support the Tour Down Under.” Children are encouraged to bring their bikes and ride them in a closed off shady section of the Kapunda Road, where witches hats and ‘quirky’ street signs will keep them occupied. That, along with chalk drawing, a street artist Tea Cup rides and a display of vintage cars will keep the young and the young at heart entertained. Locals and visitors alike will enjoy the relaxed atmosphere as they wait for the action to pass through Greenock three times, each time turning left from Murray Street onto Adelaide Road. Cyclists are expected to fly through at approximately 11.10 am, 12.19 p.m. and 1.28 p.m.

Barossa Stage SANTOS TOUR DOWN UNDER 2014
“A Day at the Races” in Angaston Over the past four months a small group of dedicated Angaston locals have also been quietly working on the Stage 1 Finish of the Tour Down Under that will be hosted in Angaston on January 21. It is expected that between 5,000 and 7,000 visitors will descend on Angaston with activities geared towards providing families a relaxed “Day at the Races” from 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. This year’s race will loop not once, not twice, but three times through Angaston, providing optimum viewing opportunities for race goers. Angaston Management Group chairman, Mr Steve Falland said the region is ready to embrace the start and finish of the Tour Down Under, in an event first. “The town and the Barossa in general is keen to capitalise
on that exposure for the world wide event,” said Steve. “It will bring a lot of visitor dollars into the town and we are hoping to turn it into a full day event with after race music and plenty of activities and fundraising for local organisations, charities and sporting clubs.” Memorial Reserve will be a designated family friendly space with a jumping castle by Barossa Valley Bouncy Castles, Happy Faces face painting, Barossa Valley Ice Creams, cold drinks by Angaston/Moculta United Hockey Club, scones, tea, coffee and slushies by the Good Shepherd Lutheran School’s P&F, “Slack Taxi” acrobatic bouncers performing at 12.40 p.m., and “Bop Til You Drop” children’s entertainment at 10.15 a.m. and 1.15 p.m. The Village Green will feature a central information point,
live music by Cloudy between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., and sales of cold drinks by the Make A Wish Foundation. In Murray Street, Smart Health Training and Services will provide a cycling assessment service from their marquee throughout the day. Thorn Clark Wines is offering wine tastings at the Brauhaus from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Steinys also has tastings and sales throughout the day. To wind down after the excitement of the race finish at 2.24 p.m. and winners’ presentations at 2.40 p.m. A live band, “The Valley Cats” will perform under the veranda of the Brauhaus between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. In addition to Tuesday’s race, a women’s road race will be held on Monday January 20, starting at 12 p.m. in Angaston and then finishing in Angaston at 3 p.m.

Williamstown aims for trifecta Williamstown’s Community Council president, Mrs Sue Poole has been working hard in co-ordinating the decorating of the town as they aim to take a trifecta in the Best Dressed Town category for the Tour Down Under. Wi l l i a m s t o w n wa s named best dressed town in stage four last year and was a bronze winner overall. Adding to the excitement, Linfield Road Wines were stage four winner for the commercial property section and won the honour overall. Sue said when you find out you have taken the title; it is a little overwhelming. “To me it’s a tremendous feeling, particularly last year when we were against Norwood,” said Sue.
“It is great to be able to have the opportunity to go through Williamstown again, we are pretty lucky.” Sue has been working on a patchwork quilt which will be displayed on Mount Crawford Road, near the sprint as part of the stage three event on Thursday. The quilt features aspects of Williamstown and the bike race. Three categories form the Best Dressed competition – town, private residence and commercial property. Judging criteria includes community involvement, innovation, appearance and environmental initiatives. For more information or to register as a participant visit www.tourdownunder. com.au
